This lavish holiday set has been called the greatest rock & roll Christmas album of all time. That's an opinion that's tough to argue with when you find yourself immersed in the massive sounds painstakingly crafted by legendary producer Phil Spector. His "wall-of-sound" technique is perfectly suited to the music of the season, as he proves with layer upon layer of piano, sleigh bells, buoyant percussion, and, of course, those legendary Spectorsound harmonies. The Crystals turn their sassy interplay into sheer magic on "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town," The Ronettes stroll sweetly through numbers like "Sleigh Ride," while Darlene Love delivers a real knockout punch with her yearning version of "Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)." Sure to become the soundtrack for your holidays. --David Sprague
Customer Reviews:
A 60's Christmas.......2007-03-29
A great CD for bringing back the Rock and Roll Christmas songs you remember from the sixties. I never heard these on the record player at home, but definitly remember them from the AM radio and now and then in the department stores at Christmas. What a throw back to make you remember those great days surrounding the holiday season.
CHRISTMAS CD'S.......2007-03-14
THE CD WAS GREAT. PLAYED GOOD. THE MUSIC WAS WHAT I EXPECTED. SO HAPPY WITH THE EXPEDIANT DELIVERY AND THE QUALITY OF THE PURCHASE. THANKS TO ALL.
Simply the best Christmas rock album EVER.......2007-03-09
Whatever you think of Phil Spector now, there is no dobut of his production genius in 1962. This contains nary a single misstep on it; each track is a classic and is a must addition to any serious Christmas music collection.
The version of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" by the Crystals is pure rock and roll heaven. "Sleigh Ride" is the best version ever recorded. And "Christmas, Baby Please Come Home," should be enshrined in the Rock adn Roll Hall of Fame.
You want old school? This is IT!
What a *KILLER* cd!!!!.......2007-03-04
KILLER!!! A CHRISTMAS CD NAMED AFTER AN IDIOT!!! THAT'S WHAT WE NEED FOR CHRISTMAS!!!! YOU'LL BE SPENDING THIS CHRISTMAS IN PRISON!!!!
Wall of Sound Christmas Music.......2007-02-19
Phil Spector is famous for his wall-of-sound studio mix that is easily identified in 1960s pop music such as that of the Ronettes and the Crystals. This music is amazingly fresh after all these years. Last year Saturday Night Live brought Darlene Love in to do a wonderful spoof of Christmas music, much in the vein of the music on this recording, on "Christmastime for the Jews." Love is still in great vocal shape, and the song is a scream. Going in to the commercial break Love does her beautiful version of "White Christmas" and I think Lorne Michaels and company did us a disservice in not allowing her to sing the whole song on the show; this CD is worth the price just for this wonderful version of the song.

Good mix of films!
I'm a big fan of this soundtrack music and will be looking for more CD's like this.
A mixed collection of movie music.......2006-02-23
For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.

Jim Brickman's 1997 holiday package is all satin bows and glowing hearth embers, precisely the approach his romantically inclined legions would have wished him to take. Those with less sentimental ears might argue that at times the pianist's approach is a touch too sweet. "Joy to the World" would be more affecting as a solo work, for instance, and we could have done without the strings and music-box embellishments heard in "Angels." Yet Brickman compensates by delicately tracing a path to our heart-of-hearts in the album's two superb, nonholiday originals, "Fireside" and "Winter Peace." Three vocal tracks surface here: a breathy Kenny Loggins sings on the album's obligatory lullaby ("Starbright"), the female gospel group Point of Grace takes a bow ("Hope is Born Again"), and country vocalist Collin Raye performs a heart-clutching duet with Susan Ashton on the title track. It's not Brickman's finest record, but it's a very pretty one. --Terry Wood

Jim Brickman Christmas CD.......2007-02-07
We love this CD. It is beautiful music. We bought more to give as gifts.
Good Christmas music but not the vocals.......2006-12-31
I'm not fond of the vocals on any of Jim Brickman's work and this is no exception. His playing is lovely as always but I wish he'd stick to instrumentals and not have vocalists on his albums. They always seem to ruin the mood.
Jim Brickman CD "The Gift".......2006-02-23
A friend loaned me her CD and I absolutely loved it......but I could not purchase it ANYWHERE.....my daughter suggested I contact you.....results, results!!!! Thank you! A most outstanding seasonal soft listening CD.
Christmas Music at its best! .......2004-12-20
Jim Brickman makes the piano sound like bells and how appropriate for Christmas music! This CD is a must have in your holiday music collection!
Lovely religious Christmas piano music.......2003-11-29
I purchased this cd because I had heard "Joy to the World" on a compilation CD of various artists. I was otherwise unfamiliar with Jim Brickman. I liked his piano style on this song with some light jazzy overtones. "The Gift" is a mostly instrumental CD. I would have liked a bit more variety in his piano playing from song to song. I enjoyed the largely traditional treatment of my favorite Christmas carols. I recommend this CD to anyone looking for religious Christmas piano music. The music is both spiritual and soothing.

a wonderful gift.......2007-07-07
I did not know who Hayley Westenra was until I saw her performing on PBS. She has a really beautiful voice. This cd is a Christmas cd that she has recorded. Some songs are traditional Christmas songs and others are inspirational tunes. I recommend it.
I loved her other cd's but not this one........2007-03-05
I was disappointed when i recieved this cd. Not worth the price.
soothing music.......2007-02-11
Hayley Westenra is the best. I thought this would be Valentines Day music or the like, but it is more like simulated Christmas / religious. The title does say "gift", but when I read the description before buying I did not think Christmas music.
Haley Westerna My Gift to You CD.......2007-01-05
Great CD. She has a remarkable voice.
Celtic Woman and Haley Westenra.......2006-12-14
Celtic Woman is probably the best kept secret in the music world. I caught their show on our KCPT public television station and thought it was the best show they have ever aired. I have told my friend about Celtic Woman and they rave about them also. My favorite of all of the girls is Haley Westenra, but all of them are super and can stand alone on their individual talent. I can't say enough about the violin playing girl on the dvd, she is remarkable and mezmorizing to say the least. If you appreciate good quality entertainment, you can't miss with a purchase of Celtic Woman.

Awesome Holiday Instrumental Music.......2006-10-21
A Gift of Song, an awesome Christmas Holiday CD. Soothing & Ralaxing, the man of Classical Gas fame can do no wrong. Enjoy!, & Merry Christmas!
Great CD.......2005-12-02
This CD is great. I have owned it for many years and enjoy playing it even when it is not Christmas. For the most part, it is not your standard everyday Christmas music which I am sure everyone has. Very soothing and relaxing. When I first listened to it, I thought that I had wasted my money because it was different from all my other Christmas music. But after playing it several times, I realized what a gem it was.
A Gift of Song is not THE Gift of Song.......2005-07-30
The album is great. I was excited to finally find Mason Williams' "A Gift of Song", the composition, on this album. A beautiful Warner Bros recording originally: Mason Williams, Chorus, Orchestra, everything but the kitchen sink. One of my all time favorites. But I was disappointed to find that here the song is a newly recorded instrumental version: nice but plain by comparison. On the original LP, the piece was the last on a side and, typical inner grooves, tended to distort... dissappointing for such a spectacular recording. I am still hoping for a CD issue of the original recording by this very versatile artist/composer. I'll keep looking!
I love this cd.Its just pure beautiful music.Excellent........2003-12-22
This cd is so beautiful it almost makes me cry. I really havent listened to much music this good. Its just hard to compete with this. Also you should be pleased to know that unlike practically other Christmas cd this one is so good you will listen to it no matter what month it is.Even June July and August. When you listen to this youll realize that some Christmas music is listenable in the summertime. This is a great cd.Awesome.A 10.
A Gift of Song; a beautiful instrumental Christmas CD.......2001-07-14
Unlike many of the crass commercial Christmas offerings, this CD offers the listener beautiful instrumental cuts that help you relax during a busy season of the year. The Virgin Mary cut is the best(acoustic guitar, and a mid-east flavor) ,

Trisha Yearwood's resonant voice is sweet, sultry, vulnerable, and ideally suited for the reverential standards, pop faves, and honky-tonkers that adorn this holiday collection. The Sweetest Gift's moderate arrangements complement Yearwood's covers of "There's a New Kid in Town," Leiber and Stoller's "Santa Claus Is Back in Town," Hank Snow's "Reindeer Boogie," and "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" The CD demonstrates why Yearwood is one of Nashville's superior talents. --Martin Keller

The Sweetest Gift by Trisha Yearwood.......2007-01-16
I was very satisfied with the CD I ordered. I had this CD before and lost it and I liked it so much, I had to have another one. I would recommend this to anyone, especially someone who enjoys her music. I think the CD is an older CD, but it is really good.
Great Voice-Great Material.......2006-11-23
This is a very good Christmas Album. I like every song on the album. Reindeer Boogie is my favorite. It's a very upbeat song. My second favorite is The Sweetest Gift. I had never heard this song before. Thank you Trisha for putting it on this album. It is a wonderful song which was first recorded way back in 1942.
Santa Claus is back in town.......2006-11-05
I got the CD for The Greatest Gift, which is very good, and was pleasantly surprised by Santa Claus is Back in Town.
Great Voice Needs Better Material.......2005-12-14
The best cuts on this album--Let it Snow!, Away in a Manger, and The Christmas Song--aren't nearly enough to reccommend it. The so-called "pop" tunes marginalize the spirit of the holiday, and they're kind of stupid to boot. "Reindeer Boogie" is an embarrassment. Trisha has a great voice and is one of the great interpretive vocalists in any format. This album came out several years before Martina McBride's evergreen collection and could have been moved by the same spirit that informed that holiday classic.
a yearwood christmas.......2005-02-23
i usually don't buy christmas music(i forget to take them out...) but as a Yearwood fan i had to have this one. and i'm glad i bought it. casue this is a good cd. i really love her voice in and of it self, and it suits these songs really well. My fave song is track 5 it wasn't his child, gives me chills everytime!

Calm, perhaps a bit understated, and graceful music.......2006-12-20
If you can manage nothing more than giving yourself a peaceful hour listening to "The Gift: Acoustic Offerings for the Holiday Season" by Eric Tingstad and Nancy Rumbel, then by all means do so.
Here is the balm to counteract the bustle and rush that take over our lives during the Christmas season. The music is calm, perhaps a bit understated, and graceful.
Simply Beautiful.......2006-12-18
I see Amazon doesn't carry this anymore and the used copies are rather pricey. Well if you can find this album somewhere for a decent price, I would urge you to get it.
This is the perfect CD to light the fire to, serve hot mulled cider and entertain guests with. It's not annoying and boisterous and it's not "cliche." It simply provides a warm, mellow atmosphere as the backdrop for any holiday gathering.
Eric Tingstad and Nancy Rumbel recorded it in 1989, but the sound is timeless. Warm acoustic fingerpicking, piano, and flute. Nothing plugged in, no vocals. This album will sound just as good 10 years from now.
Songs can range from upbeat with a playful flute to slower and more brooding, but they always seem to find a hopeful point. Some of the songs they cover are not well known, but that is part of the charm.
I grew up in a house that played this CD every winter for the holidays. I'm 23 now and I still love it! The music is so good, you will be tempted to listen to this CD when it isn't Christmas time!
Not Just For Christmas.......2001-12-02
Friends and family don't want to listen to Christmas carols in July? Do they scream Bah Humbug and tell you to wait till December or tell you you have Christmas on the brain? Well, they won't say anything, and might not even think these are Christmas songs if this is the recording you play. Why? Because none of these well known Christmas songs sound like the canned holiday stuff that the stores play to get you to spend, and radio stations think is all that defines the holidays. Instead, Tingstad and Rumble, premiere Northwest musicians, weave amazing counter melodies that take you to other places. Good King Wenceslas is a wonderful example of that, starting out with the familar melody must people know, and then taking off into a delightful counter melody. Deck the Halls, is done in an upbeat way that can chase any stress away and leave you smiling. If, I was told, I could only have one holiday CD in my collection, this would be the one. I give this to friends, and they are never disappointed. So, if you like familar songs, done in unusual ways with unusual instruments, that are guaranteed to warm your heart and soothe your soul, give this CD a try. I bet you will play it the year round.
The best there is.......2001-11-12
This is the best collection of acoustic Christmas music I have ever heard. Of all the Christmas cds I own, this is the only one that really seems inseparable from the season. The recording is top quality, and the music is immaculately executed with meaning and grace, completely devoid of the cheese and over-dramatization that often taints holiday music. To listen to each one of these well-known carols can make you feel that you never quite heard it before--not the way it was meant to be heard. Every single track is excellent. Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring, Ave Maria, Auld Lang Syne, and the Coventry Carol are definitely the best I've ever heard them. This cd is worth its price and more. It's priceless.
the gift eric tinstad, nancy rumbel.......2000-12-22
I bought this cassette at least five years ago but somehow lost it in my latest move. I found that I listened to it all year since it transends Christmas time. I was thrilled to find that it was out in CD and have just ordered a new one. It gives me a very peaceful feeling which makes it the best Christmas CD I have yet to encounter. I highly recommend it at Christmas and all year.

This has been a favorite Christmas CD of mine for many years. Lost my copy and ordered a new one.

This is a wonderful CD to have and listen to at Christmas and every day of the year. The songs by Kenny Rogers have so much meaning and are just beautiful! This is a great "GIFT" to give and receive! The reason I purchased this CD was to have the song "Mary did you know?" The CD is worth having just for this one song alone! Buy it! You will love it!

It's refreshing to hear a version of "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" that doesn't reference the arrangement Phil Spector came up with on A Christmas Gift for You four decades ago. Barry Manilow's rendition was inspired by Bing Crosby's 1945 collaboration with the Andrews Sisters. And that pretty much explains where the artist is coming from on the majority of this holiday offering. This is a big orchestrated (and voiced) Christmas album, most of it well suited for delivery on a Broadway stage. Accordingly, the singer picks holiday-themed tunes from the likes of Rodgers & Hammerstein, Sammy Cahn & Jule Styne, Irving Berlin, and Frank Loesser. Then, just to confuse things a bit (this is, after all, someone who had a huge hit with Ian Hunter's "Ships"), Manilow throws in a superb cover of "River," Joni Mitchell's ode to Christmas depression. Everything else is warm and festive, though, including the Manilow-penned title track. The singer's longtime fans will adore this collection. --Bill Holdship
Customer Reviews:
Very Veeegaas!.......2007-01-12
We enjoyed this CD and Mr. Manilow's voice, but were a tiny bit put off by the smattering of smarmy glitz present. Though we've never been to Las Vegas, nor do we want to visit, the influence of that cursory destination is highly evident in Barry's arrangements.
Love that Christmas Love!.......2006-08-03
Well, it was 103 degrees last night in Baltimore, but I had the car windows open, air off, singing Dixieland-style "Santa Clause is Coming to Town" with Barry. OK, I'm nuts, but whaddoicare! There are only 11 songs here, but they are super, high-power big band arrangements. I love Christmas songs anyway, so much peace and love. Why only at Christmas?
These are lively arrangements of the old favorites, that make you think of the family around the tree. But, oh my, "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm" really rocks! I LOVE that arrangement! I blast that bad boy on the car radio at 60 mph and sing, LOUD! Revs me up for work for hours. There are also 2 absolutely beautiful songs I never heard before, "River" and "A Gift of Love," the latter written by Barry.
Other pretty tracks are: Winter Wonderland, Happy Holiday/White Christmas,Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, (There's No Place Like) Home For The Holidays, I'll Be Home For Christmas, My Favorite Things, The Christmas Waltz, and What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?
A beautiful collection of songs from 2002 and a treat for any Manilownian. So hey, get outside the box and listen to it all year long. By the way, it's great to hear somebody still say, and sing, the word "Christmas".
a good Christmas album.......2004-02-14
the thing that one has to remember is that Barry Manilow is NOT "pop" anymore. since the late '80s he's dabbled in jazz, swing, and big-band to a point where by the mid '90s he was being played on big-band radio stations! no joke! i heard Barry on a pop standards station a few months ago. Dean Martin was singing "Volarè" and then Barry came on with "Ships", followed by a song by Patti Page! Manilow has certainly grouped himself with perfect company...accidentally or on purpose...and his music has ALWAYS had more class and feel to it than his contemporaries and maybe that's why there was a resistance from the rock generation to embrace Manilow the way the AC market did. This Christmas album, his first since 1990, is done in the style he's now famous for: big band. i don't mind the short running time. i don't want to hear an hour or more worth of songs by anyone in one sitting...especially holiday songs. But this holiday album serves it's purpose. It doesn't drag on and on like a classical song might do...we're treated to holiday songs in a jazzy environment. An A&E special was aired to help promote the album...it didn't have to happen because the CD would've hit GOLD with or without massive promotion because we're ALL in those checkout lines or on-line whenever we get word that Manilow is out with something new...out of the 11 songs on here, only a few are genuine classics. the others are holiday-themed songs like "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve", "River", "The Christmas Waltz", "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm", or "A Gift of Love". Manilow also brings us the Bing Crosby style "Santa Claus IS Coming To Town". The only song that comes across as a novelty {and i LOVE comedy/novelty songs} is "My Favorite Things" which i've always described as a Christmas version of the Phil Harris classic "That's What I Like About the South". The only drawback, since Manilow is now sub-merged in jazz and swing music, is it lacks a "modern" pop feel and that might scare off teenyboppers and younger adults who don't like the sounds of their grandparents style of music because it's seen as un-cool and "safe", whatever that means. it's a great holiday CD...not too long and not too short
terrible.......2004-02-09
I am a manilow fan, but this album really is terrible, played once and i had a blue christmas
I Feel Cheated.......2003-11-10
First of all, I AM a Barry Manilow fan. When I heard that a new Christmas album was coming out in 2002, I was excited. After his first Christmas album, Because It's Christmas, which was an excellent album, I couldn't wait to buy this one and hear it. What a disappointment. Only 11 songs, most of them shorter than 3 minutes, some not even 2 minutes long. There's not a standout song on the entire album. Better luck next time, Barry.

A Wonderful project!.......2000-11-17
I have been a fan of Andrae Crouch for years. The gift that God has given this man is extrordinary. This cd will bless the music lover. It is the essence' of Andrae. It is versatile! I love the big band selections. The song "It came upon a midnight clear" is wonderfully done. Sounds just like angels are really singing! The string intstrumemts will lull you into the presence of God.
Nothing mediocre here! Andrae has taken on the responsibility of making sure this GREAT BIG world hears his GREAT BIG praises to a GREAT BIG GOD!!
God bless you Andrae! What God has done for you, and what God is doing through you! Give it all back to Him!
best of the century.......2000-01-08
This is the best christmas album ever to have over christmas season,in my country South Africa this is the only album with all the songs featured on radio,Andrae is the best and I call him God's blue eye boy ,he always gives us something different from other artist
One Of The Best Christmas CDs I own.......1999-11-30
Great Christmas album! I could listen to songs like 'Bethlehem', and Chaka Khan's solo songs all day long! 'Away In The Manger' and 'Silent Night' are worthy renditions. However, I thought that some of the songs such as 'O Come All Ye. . ' and the Angels Medley were a bit too jazzy and big band for me. I prefer true cool souflful music rather than those versions. The Christmas Medley is excellent in spite of the catroonish sound of 'Jingle Bells'. All in all, in spite of some of the fast tunes which don't do much for it, get this CD!
