Customer Reviews:
Late Day New Jack Swing.......2006-07-02
Lamarr K. Swing had a life of struggle for 19 years before recording this effort. At the age of 4, he began singing in church. At 13, he instantly won a talent contest. And at 16, Andre Couch, a gospel singer extraordinaire, heard him sing and became interested in working with him. He then found stardom at Denny's restaurant in Palm Springs, CA. I'm unsure of how well his album actually did, however.
Despite the release date of 1994, there is a strong presence of pure New Jack Swing here. Unlike many uptempo albums, two ballads open up the album. The first is a fantastic vintage soul ballad with a nice hook and sax, while the second is okay, although it is autobiographical and concerns Lammar K. Swing's problems. From here, though, the remaining tracks are solid midtempos and uptempos for the most part. The faster uptempos include "Say You Will", "Swang Wit Me", "Sooo Good", "Right Back To You" and "Get It Started". The first, third, and fifth of these stand out, while the second sounds rather juvenile with a beepy/Middle East sound. If you've heard Bobby Brown's "Two Can Play That Game," then the fourth will be very identical. Midtempos include "Tell Me", "Low Key", "Stay Together", "Slow It Down", and "Low Key (Remix)", which are all solid and laid-back. The first of these is symblematic of the desire for a meaningful relationship, while the third deals with crossing racial lines.
Vocally, Lamarr K. Swing sounds like a less polished Tevin Campbell.
This is a pretty good album that should find a place in any New Jack Swinger's collection. However, a majority of tunes don't provide instant gratification since they're more low-key and cruisey, but they are growers...
