5 out of 5 stars I was there.......2007-07-15

I saw The Paul Butterfield Blues Band a number of times, as well as The Electric Flag, not to mention The Byrds, and so many others, all at the venerable old Golden Bear, back in the days when Huntington Beach was a sleepy little surf town in the old California tradition. Right on Pacific Coast Highway, this haven of great music was an oasis in the County, Orange. We'd wait hours outside to get front row seats (the place held a hundred at most - there were no bad seats), the wind howling off the Pacific Ocean (it was always winter when the best bands were around, for some reason - at least in my memory). The Electric Flag, by the way, was named after a flag that was on stage when they played, with a chrome pipe sticking up out of this aparatus, and flag hung from the pipe. When the gizmo was turned on, it blew the flag sideways by means of some hidden fan - an American Flag, by the way. Saw CTA at the Whiskey (then the Whiskey A Go-Go) on Sunset Strip, right before the first album came out -Terry Kath was their first and only real guitarist, and the horns were incredible. All this music set the standard for so much music to come. Anyway, re: this album - buy it. It's not only historically significant as others have made clear, it's just incredible music. When Buddy would play - and he was a huge man - he'd sweat from song One - then be drenched for the rest of the set. Great blues voice, as well as a great drummer. He wore an American Flag shirt when saw I him play. Think he had double bass drums. And how he would sing and play incredible rhythms simultaneously was a thing to behold. I miss that music. I"ve heard lots of blues and rock since, but nothing like that. THOSE were musicians who didn't need a producer, engineer and whoever or whatever to make great msuic. From Paul B to Buddy and Michael and Elvin, the blues are colorblind. Thank God. Play on. Play on.

5 out of 5 stars BLOOMFIELD AT HIS BEST - 5000 STARS!!!.......2007-02-14

If you know about Mike Bloomfield, you have probably heard this. However, if you haven't.....be prepared for a gift...a gift from a master. During the 1960s, before Clapton hit these shores, there were two white blues guitar players: either you were a Danny Kalb or a Mike Bloomfield fan. I personally liked both of them, but Bloomfield definitely had the edge. In addition to being a blues scholar, there has never been anyone this side of Hendrix to play with so much passion. His microtonal bends and screaming leads sold more telecasters and les Pauls than a dozen magazine adds. This album was recorded shortly after he left the Butterfield band, trading his telecaster and gold top Les Paul for a beautiful sunburst. Like all the great players, Bloomfield achieved his sound with his fingers sans effects, in his case, through a pair of Fender twins pumped to full volume. His style is part Albert King, part B.B. King and part schizophrenic energy. This album, with the possible exception of the "If you love these blues"...guitar player recording, captures "bloomers" at his best. Just listen to Killing floor!! The rest of the band is also magnificent, however, for me, the highlight has always been Mike Bloomfield!! Today is Feb. 13th, two days away from the 26th anniversary of his tragic death. I will remember him by playing cut number 10 on this album. At all of 30 seconds long, "Easy Rider" captures, more than any other recording, the passion and blues knowledge of this man who was far more musically mature than his twenty something years when he recorded it. Rest in peace, Mike.

4 out of 5 stars Electric Flag - 'A Long Time Coming' (Sony) 4 1/2 stars.......2007-01-24

Originally released in 1968,this was Electric Flag's second effort.Basically, this is superb blues rock,as SO few bands can play it.Tunes I was most impressed with were the awesome "Killing Floor","Over-Lovin' You" (my theme song,at one time), "Sitting In Circles" and "Easy Rider". Plus, the four added bonus cuts here are good, too. Check out this album's personnel: Michael Bloomfield (R. I. P.) - guitar&vocals, Richie Havens-sitar&percussion, Buddy Miles-drums, Herbie Rich-guitar,keyboards&sax, Harvey Brooks-bass and Marcus Doubleday-trumpet. An absolute must-have.

3 out of 5 stars What's up with adding bonus tracks?.......2006-09-06

My only complaint... 4 bonus tracks have been tacked on at the end the CD that were not on the original vinyl. It's killing me. They should have just left well enough alone. I'm sittin' here gazing at the back cover of my Columbia Stereo CS 9597 album and there are just 10 tracks. The producers of the CD don't realize that the set was complete, as is. I bought the CD anyway...

3 out of 5 stars Great Sounds. . .but.......2006-08-31

I am glad that I purchased this CD. I am a fan of the blues, and especially 60's bands that experimented with horns like The Paul Butterfield Blues Band and B S & T. I first listened to Mike Bloomfield with the release of The Supersession album with Al Kooper and Stephen Stills. I enjoy this first Electric Flag CD very much; however, it was a disappointment in a way. I expected the same Mike Bloomfield who played on Supersession and the first few Paul Butterfield albums, especially since some things I had read cited this collection of songs as the "real" blues as opposed to the Paul Butterfield sound or even B S & T's post Al Kooper albums. I am sorry but I don't agree there. I wouldn't buy this unless you are serious about blues music and the way it changed during the 60's rock era. But I am the type of fan who listens to B S & T's first album and does not believe that everything artistically ended there. Implying that is just stupid. The second album with David Clayton Thomas is a classic too, and I enjoy it every bit as much. Personally, I like different styles. This is why this album is great for me, although I felt disappointment when I first listened to it, because it isn't Mike Bloomfield at his best. For me, it didn't live up to the hype I read. Would I buy it again? Yes, for the same reason that I listen to B S & T with or without Al Kooper and for the same reason that I savor Chicago's early albums and still enjoy their new things too.

1 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware.......2005-09-14

This being one of my favorite cd's I was excited when I saw this available as a remastered import from Sony. However, when I put it on it sounded terrible. The highs were so screechy that the cd was unlistenable and lets not talk about the non-existent bass. I do have the original Columbia issue and compared to this "remastered version" the original sounds like an audiophile cd. Not really but this is how bad this thing sounds. In looking at the credits it appears that the same person did the remastering on both. I am guessing that the import is nothing more than a digital dub from way back when. Do yourself a favor and just get the Columbia/Legacy remastered compilation. It has 99 9/10 of the origial album and it sounds great. Happy listening

2 out of 5 stars "Remastered".......2005-04-01

I ordered the import version of this CD (Sony Holland, English language label) because it was listed as "remastered" and I assumed it would have better fidelity than the domestic release. I have never heard the domestic version but it cannot be any worse than the import. Very tinny highs, not much bass. The original vinyl probably sounds better.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Compilation Album.......2003-06-16

This incredible singer/songwriter delivers his beautiful "Moonlight Kiss" straight from his heart and soul. He's no idea, but he absconded with my heart when I first heard him sing this enchanting song in the film "Serendipity," and this compilation album would have been incomplete without that captivating song.

Bap's songs are extremely well written and his accompanying musicians are continually outstanding, although these are selections from his three solo albums (Domestic Blues, Hillbilly Shakespeare and Lonely Street) and varying band persona. His cover of Steve Earle's "Angel is the Devil" will make you smile and tap your foot, as will Bap's playful "Vampire," and "Mostly Water." Bap's warm baritone voice is outstanding, especially on "Lonely Street," "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning," on a cover of Hank Williams Snr's "Lost Highway," and "[Let's lay down to rest all the] Ghosts of Belfast," the latter being a hauntingly beautiful folk-ballad Bap wrote about his Northern Ireland birthplace.

This is an extremely enjoyable album that will lift your spirits, and if you like it, do yourself a favor and purchase his other three solo albums as well, and --if you can find them-- the albums he made with his former Celtic rock/blues band: Energy Orchard - outstanding!

These are superb tunes from a very talented and gifted musician and the album is very highly recommended, but fair warning accompanies this review: This songwriter and his music are extremely addictive.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Mix.......2003-05-15

If you don't have previous Bap Kennedy cd's, this is an excellent introduction. The songs reflect some of his best work. Kennedy is an excellent example of the best of folk artists.

      2 out of 5 stars Bap Kennedy-Long Time a Comin'Story So Far.......2003-01-06

After much anticipation to Bap Kennedy's new album I was extremely disappointed with Long Time a Comin'. The album is nothing new!!! It's a compilation of the EXACT SAME recordings of some of the songs from his two previous albums - Lonely Street and Domestic Blues. The new album has two new songs, nothing special about either one, and obviously not worthy of a brand new album.
Please don't take me wrong, Bap Kennedy is an extremely talented singer-song writer who posseses a very unique style (his performance in Lonely Street and Domestic Blues are proof of his immense talent); however, if he is going to release a new CD which includes the same songs, the least that he can do is re-record each title, and maybe even add a new twist to each, to show that in fact he does possess exceptional talent.
My recommendation, don't waste your money on this CD, wait for Bap to come up with some new material. Believe me, I'm sure he will. He just needs to find new inspiration, and once he does -WATCH OUT! His two previous albums will be left in the dust.

        Product Description

The talk box is a device that is used in conjunction with other instruments to produce a unique vocal sound. Peter Frampton and Joe Walsh used this device with guitars. Roger Troutman of the Zapp Band, used the device with a keyboard to create such hits as "So Ruff So Tuff", "More Bounce", "Computer Love", "I Want To Be Your Man", etc. The talk box is a device that JIM has mastered and uses extensively, along with his vocal and instrumental performances on his new CD release titled "Long Time Comin". JIM's musical style can be described as a blend of R&B and Hip Hop. A mixture of old, new, and innovative. His rich vocals are reminiscent of Gerald Levert, Jeffrey Osborne, and sometimes have a character that you will come to recognize only as JIM. He mixes his vocal performances with talk box performances that are comparable to the one and only Roger Troutman. JIM has been in the music industry for the past 20 years in the Tampa Bay, Florida area as a bass player, songwrtiter, producer, lead and background vocalist, talk boxer, and as a keyboard and drum machine programer. JIM single handedly wrote, performed, arranged, produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered his CD in his studio for his new record label, "Rescue Records". The CD is appropriately titled, because as JIM says, "This is something I should have done a long time ago, but I just didn't have the means". JIM also states: "When I first heard the song "More Bounce" by Roger Troutman being played on the radio, I stopped what I was doing and listened to the whole song. I was so blown away, that from that moment, I made myself a promise that I would learn to emulate that sound. After Roger Troutman passed away, I made myself another promise that I would continue with the sound he established, and try to continue to please his fan base.." 1 Slipping Away 2 I Wanna Be 3 How Do U Like It 4 Uneedsomame 5 Are U Ready 6 Big Time Baller 7 Missumom 8 10' Tall

        5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......2003-06-21

This is, in my opinion, the best record Chris Lizotte has ever made! These songs have tons of soul and drive. Maria McKee sings guest vocal on one blistering track. This is one CD that is forever staying in my permanent music collection.

1 out of 5 stars "Slow Time Movin".......2003-02-24

Although Chris is one of a few gospel artisits that dosent soup up alot of preachy content and just tells it to you strait. This album just falls short of really being "good". The music is driven on most of the tracks, but it leaves you longing for better vocal melody to the music. He takes good music and puts slow moving vocal qaulity. The good side to the album are the songs "Hold Me Up" and "Peace Be With You". Besides those select tracks, the album is good for background music.

5 out of 5 stars H-Wood is off the hook!.......2003-08-01

This album has been in my cd player from the first day i met him at the cow palace in frisco. Some of the tracks on the album(10-15) are not that great tracks 1-9 will blow you away will tight beats and mad rhyming. If you want a tight cd to put bump in your trunk buy this immediately!

          5 out of 5 stars H-Wood - It's Been A Long Time Comin.......2001-04-28

H-Wood is one of the artist in the rap game you should not over look at anytime. This album "It's Been A Long Time Coming" is one of the hottest albums to ever be released on the west coast. I see artist release albums with no points just wanna be coo and say they have a album. Well H-Wood has alot of stuff to say and it's all real it ain't rap'n about kill'n and all the fake [stuff] rappers won't do. They can say it but you ... well they ain't goin do it. On Some Of The Songs H-Wood calls out some names, but you gotta buy that album to hear it, not big names though, just people that have double crossed him.

This album is produced all by the MIGHTY PRODUCER "H-Wood". H-Wood I have to say is probably the tightest west coast producer besides Phonk Beta who works for Siccmade Muzic. Ever song on this album is a hit and not one weak song on it. This is H-Wood's first release and if you don't have this album you need to pick it up. This album is definitely a WEST COAST CLASSIC ALBUM.
