During the early seventies, WAR irrupted with vigorous freshness in the musical sand, to fill a demanded space, a required balance between the jazz, the Latin favor best known as fusion. You may argue the true pioneers in this field were Carl Tjader an Tito Puente in the sixties and fifties respectively and eve before with Poncho Sanchez in the late forties.

But even so, the most relevant aspect to remark is this music contained in its inner structure the seminal roots of the reggae and this public was immediately engaged with this rhythmical melodies conquering of this way the applause of a neglected audience. If not so, the names of Jimmy Cliff, Bobby Bloom and his Montego
Bay, Shango, Mungo Jerry and the legend of Bob Marley would have been ignored or underrated. In this sense Spill the wine (watch the flute solo as musical curtain and essential support) may be considered the jewel of the crown and likewise the funny theme Cisco Kid

So this album constitutes y itself a decisive breakthrough as well as a vigorous ipulse to the new tendencies that would become inspiration' s source to many ensembles and great audiences all around the world.

The Best of War and More.......2005-09-06

Love that Latin group from Long Beach! All Day Music is my favorite song on this wonderful CD. That cut is so relaxing. Low Rider and Summer were big hits from my high school senior year. I like having this CD in my library for a reminder of my happy high school years. Hey, Spill the Wine, which is cut 9, has to be one of the most unusual songs in pop music history. That song, of course, was done when Eric was with the group. Two totally different kinds of songs are Spill and All Day Music, a good example of War's diversity. I still cannot believe I got this at such a low price (-:

How can you have a compilation of WAR and NOT have "The World Is A Ghetto" and "Don't Let No One Get You Down" on it? This isn't a bad com,pilation, but alof the songs are short versions of the originals and is quite lacking all the way around. Get the "WAR The Very Best Of War. You'll find ALL of the biggest hits and more.

As with most music that I purchase sound quality is usually most important. This release does not disappoint! In fact, this is simply the best remastering I've heard on a Bunnymen release! With mastering by Giovanni Scatola, these songs sound even better than the 2003/2004 Rhino remasters. The music is crisper, louder, and more punchy. ("Lips Like Sugar" sounds awesome with it's roaring intro!) That's not to say that those recent remasters weren't good, but I personally think that the music sounds brighter on this compilation.

Next up we have the excellent packaging and tracklisting. Some fans may complain about the release being presented in digipak format, but I quite like it. Plus, we have the classic cover photo by Anton Corbijn. For a 1-CD collection, the release highlights 20 Echo & The Bunnymen classics from 1980 to 2005! We could argue what should and what should have not been included, but for the casual fan this sums up their history quite well.

My major complaint with this release is the 8-track DVD. Considering the list price, I think the DVD should have featured much more than 8 tracks. Surely these guys have more than 8 videos! How about including all their music videos?!?! Considering how most record labels work, this will probably be our only chance to get their videos on DVD for several years to come. It's only a random sample of their career! I guess fans will be left "You-Tube"-ing the rest!

Note that the package states "all promo videos are stereo except track 2 in mono". What is track 2? "The Killing Moon"! Unfortunately, Rhino let me down here. Why include all videos in stereo except this one? Not that it really mattered, considering the original audio tracks seem to have been used on all the videos instead of overdubbing newly remastered audio. That's why "The Killing Moon" video sounds poor and flat, besides it being in mono!

The recent videos sound fine, but they are mastered at too low of volume. Sounds like laziness! Do an A/B comparison between "The Cutter" as heard on the DVD video and "The Cutter" as heard on the CD. It goes to show how well the music has been restored for the CD and how carelessly flat it was left for the DVD. As for the picture, it is surprisingly excellent, considering the age of some of the earlier promos. Too bad the same care couldn't have been given to the underlying audio track. I expect better work from the Rhino team!

As a casual fan myself, I must admit that I still really enjoy this best of, including the DVD (despite the faults). It's the first time I've seen many of these videos. Add in the excellent CD audio, and it's a worthy package to add to any Echo collection.

long overdue.......2007-02-01

Finally we get an official video collection on DVD with this remaster of the 1985 release!

The original 1985 release of "Songs To Learn and Sing" was a must have for every college kid I knew back then. For some US fans this was the first album to expose them to the Bunnymen.

This expanded and remastered version picks up where the old one left off and then picks up again when they reformed with the UK Top 10 album "Evergreen" and continues to the 2006 release "Siberia".

My only complaint is that this is not in 5.1 surround sound.

I'm sorry to vent on the Stylistics, certainly others are guilty of this, but $33 to get all the Stylistics hits is WAY too expensive. Sorry, love the Stylistics, and the Spinners too (whose double CD anthology is around $30 too). Why is something like Lionel Richie and the Commodores 2CD Gold $13.99? Oh well... I'll wait.

was hoping for..................2005-11-25

A little disapointed that songs from a good album back then.Lets put it all together had more than one song too pick from too be one this compilation.And also the (heavy)album had some too.But anything is better than nothing since there is virtually nothing on later reissues from this label on this artist.Which I still too this day don't understand.Their is people out here all over the world who would buy once they know they are available.The albums I mentioned and(you are beautiful).Three that would bring good money too this label.But it does have some not on previous hits albums.So pick it up you will be happy you did.And its good background music when company is over,or at work or in the car.Everyone of all ages and cultures know this music.Its music that will be around forever.Generation too generation.A Legacy,something unfortunately todays music cannot say.

Canadian poet Leonard Cohen sings with great weight and authority and his lyrics are among the most elegant and scripted of the rock era. This collection is culled from his past three albums (1988's I'm Your Man, 1992's The Future, and 1994's Cohen Live) and shows a man whose voice has deepened to the point of grim, foreboding death with lyrics sharpened to masterful precision. The arrangements are deliberately clunky--the cheese- whiz female back-ups lend unusual tension bordering on parody--but the sentiments are for real. Two previously unreleased cuts, "Never Any Good" and the non-event, "The Great Event" suggest his well is currently dry. But the unrelenting bleakness of "The Future" and uneasy celebration of "Democracy" are among the past decade's most challenging pop works. --Rob O'Connor

Deep........2005-07-06

Personally, I couldn't deal with this little amount of Leonard Cohen myself, and would get his 2-disc "Essential" collection first. However, if you're looking for a single disc of hits, here you go. I actually like "More Best Of" even more than his previous "Best Of", because I'm a fan of his "deeper voice" years, and this is what you get here. Obviously the songs are tops as well. Most of his late 80's and early 90's stuff is included. "Everybody Knows", "I'm Your Man", "Tower Of Song", and "The Future". Of course at just 13 tracks this misses alot, but mostly I miss "Waiting For The Miracle" (get Essential Cohen). Anyway, this is a great starting point for the casual fan, and is wonderful music for early mornings, right on thru to "Closing Time".

Leonard Cohen in his particular mood , lets you mesmerized . The best song in my opinion in this well selected collection is Dance me to the end of love , with great lyrics and greek echoes . There another winner songs like Everybody knows and Suzanne ; Democracy is powerful too .
Cohen 's style is unique . His voice in a ultralow frequency works out as another instrument ; very expressive and warmth .
Since I got this issue in 1999 I heard it at least once every month .
High creative level , expressiveness , musicality and originality .

Time to hang it up.......2002-11-26

After being stunned by the genious in Cohens first greatest hits, I had to pick this one up to see what other greats he had out there. Big mistake. This music has no structure and no raw emotion like his older works. Even the lyrics are pretty tame compared to earlier work. Obviously musicians change over the years but this sounds like something you would hear down at an Atlantic City lounge, but with a terribly weak singer. Having a band is a waste of time, most of this music sounds like it could have been generated by a cheesy synth.
I will continue to hunt down the old greats but this is just Elvis later years wish wash with nothing thought provoking except what happened over the years.

For too long I didn't listen. Works used in movies as varied as "Pump Up the Volume" and "Shrek", ya gotta luv it. I just keep playing it and liking it more and more, so will you.

I can't believe that "FIRST WE TAKE MANHATTAN" is not on a "BEST OF COHEN". I would also rather hear the studio versions over the live. My advice instead is to buy "I'M YOUR MAN" and if you like that get "THE FUTURE". His newest cd is very good too. Mr. Cohen releases albums so rarely that 3 CDs in 13 years is not that much of an investment. If you want a good live tape I would seek out his PBS Austin City Limits video.

Six discs, great price, but... a few obvious choices missing........2007-07-16

EMI's spate of Callas re-issues and compilations in the past few years is more distressing than commendable. First, what does it say about the state of the classical music market today, when a label's marquee artist is a soprano who passed away thirty years ago, and whose recordings are a half-century old? Second, just how many ways can you re-package Callas?

Those quandaries aside, this is highly recommended to those with a passing interest in either Callas, or opera in general. With six discs tucked inside a standard double jewel case, offered at a bargain price, it's a no-brainer. So what if linear and biographical notes are missing? So much has been written about Callas, it's doubtful that anyone could come up with original essay about her life and artistic legacy.

Again, if you have no Callas or (gasp!) no opera in your CD collection, BUY THIS COMPILATION. However, those of us who already have both will find some glaring omissions.

In my mind, there are two pitfalls where a six-disc Callas retrospective is concerned. First, the need to achieve a balance in Maria's studio output produces something of a constraint. For example, there could have easily been two Verdi discs. As previously noted, Sempre Libera is missing. But there are other examples, such as Ernani, Involami, Tu Che Le Vanita(!), and arias from Nabucco.

Second, creating a balanced list of 100 Maria Callas excerpts inevitably includes some that expose her improper technique. Now, as rival diva Leyla Gencer once stated, Callas had the "sacred fire," which compensated for her imperfect techique (I'm paraphrasing here). That fire roars with life when it comes to dramatic verismo arias, such as La Mamma Morta, Voi Lo Sapete, and Suicidio. It doesn't crackle when it comes a Mozart aria like Or Sai Chi L'Onore, where her utter lack of Mozartean technique is laid bare. Callas just couldn't work her magic over it, like she did with Mi Tradi Quell'alma Ingrata.

These are minor quibbles, though, in the final analysis. You get double the content of the Callas La Divina collector's box set, for less than half the cost!

The greatest opera singer of the 20th century........2007-05-20

Here in one incredibly inexpensive package (I paid $15) are the "juicy bits" of Maria Callas's studio recordings. These six disks which run for 7 and 3/4 hours contain 99 arias, duets and concerted numbers from her studio work plus "Ah, fors'e lui" from the live recording of the Lisbon "Traviata" for the total of "100 Best". (NB: "Sempre libera" is not included.) This is probably EMI's last ditch effort to extract some value out of their Callas catalog as the European copyrights are starting to expire. Well, this is to our advantage. Whether you are a long time Callas fan and completist or a newcomer, this is well worth the money to have all these highlights ready at your finger tips.

The only complaint I have about this set is the complete lack of texts and notes. Usually these days this material is put on the web for bargain releases, but I was unable to locate any for this set. As Callas's art was in the shading of the texts, newcomers especially need to be able to follow along.

Grab this now while it is still available.

This is realy Maria Callas 100 best classics collection, surprisingly with very good sound ,without any noise or distortion .Six CDs, each of them 70 -79 min very enjoyable..Thank you EMI for this grate production...

Unbelievable Deal.......2007-04-27

I was hestant about purchasing this recording due to the low price. But this is really a great buy: A six disc compillation of Maria Callas' highlights grouped by genre/composer. If you are new to opera, this is an excellent introduction to what made Callas so unique as an artist: her passion, her ability to change her timbre, the weight of her voice, her vocal colors, to suit each role. Each disc feautres a different composer or repetoire so the listener gets to hear Callas in a differnt context. Since there are about a million "best of" complillations for Callas it's a bit overwhelming and difficult to know where to start. This is definately the most complete, and the best value for your money.

A six CD set at this price is unbelievable! If you are a beginner, start here and if you are a long time fan and have every recording under the sun like I do, it's still nice to have the CD's grouped by composer. Highly recommended!

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Sensuality Personified!.......2005-04-27

This is one of the best collections of Regine Crespin. Of course, her Berlioz/Ravel set with Ansermet is definitive, but the beauty and soft womanliness of her voice can be heard in all the selections on this disc. The engineers went for her vocal best and they created a fine collection aptly titled "The Best of..." One would be unduly captious to find Crespin "brittle" of tone here.

It is by now, very difficult to imagine anyone singing "Il est doux" with more apt expression of the line than La Crespin. Wagner's Wesendonk lieder is simply sublime from start to finish and the Faure takes on new meaning. That she is comical, melancholy, fun and happy by turns singles her out. This collection captures all her awesome talent. Underneath it all seems to be a very, if I may, sexual energy.

Crespin must be heard to be believed and the miracle lies in that even her softest tones are really enveloping, never thin. All tones are open and this is why there are enough colors in Regine Crespin's delicious voice to paint the world a thousand times, but it may also be why she infamous for being short and edgy on top but I remind, never here is she such. She is a relaxed singer in superb voice, comfortable in her own olive skin and makes the most out of every word those poets wrote.

The whole collection is unique in pace, style, and voice. It is Regine Crespin...in a nutshell fabulous!

Two More Years of Dirt.......2005-07-12

This is the follow up compilation to the 20 Years of Dirt album. It features the bands "country" hits that were released in 1987 and 1988, two older hits that were left off the first compilation and two non-hits. It fills in some of the holes, but not all of them, by any means.

Good Stuff.......2005-02-27

I've always enjoyed the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. They play some great music with nice harmonies and mandolins...yes, mandolins. I'm a sucker for that instrument. This particular greatest hits offering includes some of their biggest hits from the 80's. Just about everybody knows "Fishin' In The Dark," which, in my opinion, is one of the best country songs every placed on vinyl, or a cassette, or a disc. "I've Been Lookin'" and "Baby's Got A Hold On Me" are also here. Those three songs alone are worth the price of this disc.

Other highlights include "Face On The Cutting Room Floor," "Oh What A Love," and "Down That Road Tonight."

In summary, if you're interested in groups like Shenandoah, Restless Heart, and the Eagles, you'll probably enjoy these guys. They are more country than Restless Heart and the Eagles, but they don't have that forced "twang" that lingers on some of Shenandoah's songs.

A definite buy.

Humble Name, Real Roots Rock Legends.......2003-06-06

The follow-up to the original "best of" NGDB collection, More Great Dirt, consists of more of the 80's country hits during their long career. The NGDB was once a folk and country-rock band, but the majority of the songs on More Great Dirt come from their mainstream country days, which were the most overlooked of their albums. They really had no one big radio hit during this time (except for "Fishin' In the Dark), which hurts this record, as does the fact that it is very overshadowed by the "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" albums that were huge hits. The highlights of the album include the summertime hit "Fishin' in the Dark," Bruce Springsteen's "Cadillac Ranch," and the rocking "Down That Road Tonight." It is too bad that there are only ten tracks here. In my opinion, this isn't up to par with the classic NGDB, but it is still good, quality country and folk. A good purchase if you want an overview of their latter days.

Another great NGDB "best of" collection.......2003-01-08

More Great Dirt is the follow-up to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's previous "best of" collection, Twenty Years Of Dirt. This record, like Twenty Years Of Dirt, consists mainly of hit songs from the '80s, the period when NGDB made a transition from being a progressive country-rock band to a mainstream country act. Like Twenty Years Of Dirt, More Great Dirt is a solid collection of the Dirt Band's hit songs. Indeed, in my opinion, this record tops Twenty Years Of Dirt despite its lack of a "classic" NGDB hit song(for instance, "Mr. Bojangles" and "Long Hard Road"). Even if hardly anybody listens to these songs a long time from now, I think the songs the Dirt Band chose to put on More Great Dirt are among their best. This record may have gotten overlooked by some listeners because NGDB released it in '89, the same year they came out with their platinum-selling Will The Circle Be Unbroken, Volume 2. After listening to More Great Dirt, however, I don't think you should pass it up. By itself, it's a great record.

Like other Dirt Band records I have, this one has a lot of highlights. It starts out with NGDB's version of "Cadillac Ranch", the classic Bruce Springsteen song, with lead vocals by Jeff Hanna and Jimmy Ibbotson. There are also Ibbotson's joyful ballad "Oh What A Love"; the upbeat summer song "Fishin' In The Dark", which topped the country charts in '87; Hanna and Ibbotson's toe-tapping song "I've Been Lookin'"; "Workin' Man(Nowhere To Go)", charter NGDB member Jimmie Fadden's song about the tribulations of the displaced farmer; and the rocking songs "Baby's Got A Hold On Me" and "Down That Road Tonight". Finally, the Dirt Band, as they did on Twenty Years Of Dirt, included their best songs from the early '80s. Besides "Cadillac Ranch", NGDB's early '80s hits which are on here include "Home Again In My Heart", "I Love Only You", and "Face On The Cutting Room Floor". There are no Bob Carpenter lead vocals here(unlike "Stand A Little Rain" on Twenty Years Of Dirt), but Carpenter's solid piano and accordion work are obvious on most of the songs.

On More Great Dirt, NGDB not only matched Twenty Years Of Dirt, but they did even better. My only criticism of this record--and my gripe is a minor one--is that, like a previous reviewer, I don't think it's long enough. Ten songs don't completely capture NGDB's musical ability, and I think some of my fellow Dirt Band fans will complain that even after a couple of "best of" collections, there are still some NGDB hit songs that haven't made it onto a "best of" album. Still, I don't see how anybody wouldn't like this record. There are no obvious attempts by the Dirt Band to appeal to their "pop" fans(which is what I think "Fire In The Sky" was on Twenty Years Of Dirt). Instead, what you'll get when you listen to More Great Dirt is a great collection of hit country songs by a group who makes high-quality music even if their songs don't always end up on the charts. Don't miss this one--I think you'll be impressed.

Terrific Eighties Dirt Band Collection (But Skimpy).......2000-04-03

For Most of the Eighties (and the Nineties, too, for that matter), the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band decided they were not a jug band/roots rock/bluegrass/country-rock band. Instead, they were a country band. And by and large, country music was all the better for it. Granted, the NGDB's albums beginning with American Dream in 1979 would be of mixed quality (even though I dutifully bought them all).

So what you get here on Vol. II are the highlights of those albums. Gems like Bruce Springsteen's "Cadillac Ranch," the joyous "Fishin' in the Dark," the rousing "Baby's Got a Hold on Me" and the melancholy "Face on the Cutting Room Floor." Other highlights are original songs like Jimmy Ibbotson and Jeff Hanna's "I've Been Lookin'," Ibbotson's "Oh What a Love" and Jimmie Fadden's "Workin' Man (Nowhere to Go)." The songs feature impeccable playing, tight harmonies and just enough mandolin, steel guitar and banjo to lend an authenticity lacking in much of Nashville's cookie-cutter approach to country music.

If there's any criticism of this disc, it's that it's too short. It's like eating a bag of chips. Each one is so good, you're disappointed when you get to the end. In the CD Age there's no excuse for a 10-track, 34-minute CD, especially when you're talking about a disc that purports to be "The Best of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band." RECOMMENDED

Great album!!.......2007-03-15

Normally, Greatest Hits albums come up short. I can say this album does not!! I just recently got into Faith No More, and have found them to be nothing short of incredible!!! I bought the album on March 12th, it arrived today on the 15th!!

This album has pretty much all their big hits, and is great for the fairly new and/or casual fans. Stand-out tracks include: "We Care A Lot" "Epic" "Falling to Peices" "Cowboy Song" and "Midlife Crisis". The band also did an awesome job covering the Sabbath classic "War Pigs"!

Overall, a great album and highly recommended!

When I heard this album at my friends house a few years back I was just in awe. I immediately went straight to the store and bought myself a copy. Before I heard it the only sond I'd known from them was epic .This album is a "buffet"(i know that sounds corny) of what they have to offer. You get everything from punk, funk, rock, and even some electronicish music. I especially liked the song evidence. What a smooth song that is. How many kids were a result of that one? Anyways, If you're familiar with faith no more or not, get this album. I myself am now a huge fan of any Mike Patton project.

Serious Potential.......2006-07-15

First off the only reason I gave this album only 4 stars 4 one reason and one reason only. it's a greatest hit collection. if I were to give a greatest hits collection 5 stars them meaning of 5 stars from me would be lessened.

This is the only FNM album I have and I got it about 2 weeks ago. B4 this album I had downloaded Epic and Midlife Crisis. I thought they were pretty tyte so I got this album only because it was the only FNM album the store had. I was looking for Angel Dust but oh well.

When I got it I listened instantly and at first I was a little dissapointed. The only tracks I had herd on the radio were Epic, and Last Cup of Sorrow. I picked it up the next day gave it another try and I guess like overnight I had become an FNM fan. I have listened to this album everyday since I got it, as as a matter of fact im listening to The Perfect Crime right now.

I read through the cd booklet and I was quite shocked at what I read. I realized what this band would do to not become sell outs. They had the chance to follow up The Real Thing with probibly a multi platinum master piece. And a master piece it was but not multi platinum. Only because of the Album name. "Angel Dust", A beautiful name but a terrible drug. They could have named it anything else no matter how stupid like Doorknob, or Throat Lump, or just something and retarted and it would have sold millions. but with a name like Angel Dust, many parents would refuse for thier children to have such a record. Brilliant and Retarted at the same time. They achieved thier goal of not being sell outs but didn't even recieve enough money to be able to feul a marijuana habit. Personally I have always thought if you are givin the chance to make tons of money, and be even more famous as a band and remembered longer, to accept that oppurtunity.

But what surprised me is how huge of a band they were and probibly haven't even sold 10 million albums yet. I have herd about them long ago adn expexted them to have you know, like have 2 number 1 albums. sold 15 million in U.S. alone. all that stuff. I believe they were like #52 on VH1's best rock artists or something like that. next to the Sex Pistols they are probibly the best non sell out band ever. I always thought they were huge until i got this album.

Now about the album, fabulous. We Care A Lot, is a fuuny, clever, catchy song, that gets stuck in your head the first time u here it. Epic, is one of the best songs from the eighties, and one of the best music videos ever. Falling to Pieces is my personal favorite, great vocal preformance form Patton. War Pigs, is just as good as the Sabbath original. The Cowboy Song, is tight. Midlife Crisis is a classic, An amazing song. A Small Victory is different than any other FNM song cool. Be Aggresive is awesome and up there with NIN's Closer for perverted rock songs. Evidence, yyou know I take it back This is the oddball of the FNM collection. Last Cup of Sorrow, CRAZY!, The Perfect Crime, great bass, great song, kinda sounds more like the talking heads instead of FNM.

I want to get Angel Dust next, but this is good 4 getting into FNM.

This Is It: The Best of Faith No More (2003.) A compliation from Faith No More.

Faith No More. When you think of that band name, you think of funk rock/metal. And while also being experimental when lunatic (in a good way of course) multi band frontman Mike Patton came on board after underrated previous singer Chuck Mosley left, that's what they were. Faith No More have released many awesome songs and a few albums in the late 80s-early 90s, and a few compliations have been made consisting of the band's singles and more, as well as backlashing on MTV. Does This Is It do the band any justice? Find out of course.

OVERVIEW:

WE CARE A LOT (1985)
TRACKS PRESENT: Arabian Disco, We Care a Lot, As the Worm Turns (Live)
COMMENTS: It's nice to see they gave a nice emphasis on the vastly underrated Mosley era, so the choices on this album couldn't have been any better. I know the live version of As the Worm Turns is with Patton, but since I have no place else to put it since it was a Mosley original, here it is.

INTRODUCE YOURSELF (1987)
TRACKS PRESENT: We Care a Lot, Anne's Song, Introduce Yourself
COMMENTS: Well maybe I didn't have to put We Care a Lot, but it was also on this album since it was rerecorded. Their major label debut couldn't have a better emphasis either since the Mosley era was so underrated.

THE REAL THING (1989)
TRACKS PRESENT: Epic, From Out of Nowhere, Falling to Pieces, War Pigs
COMMENTS: Here it is. The album that started it all with Patton and becoming legends. This has a good emphasis too since it has the 3 big hits and their excellent cover of Black Sabbath's War Pigs (equally as good as the original). It would've also been nice to see Zombie Eaters, Surprise! You're Dead!, and the title track too, but I barely have any complaints.

LIVE AT BRIXTON ACADEMY (1990)
TRACK PRESENT: The Cowboy Song
COMMENTS: Some of the live versions of songs from The Real Thing that weren't on here could've gone here but that's cool. The Cowboy Song is a studio track, I know, but this is the only album it's on.

ANGEL DUST (1992)
TRACKS PRESENT: Be Aggressive, Midlife Crisis, A Small Victory
COMMENTS: Arguably Faith No More's most popular album. The song choices here couldn't be any better since it contains the 2 big hits and the not as popular but still is cheerleader like anthem Be Aggressive. Caffeine and RV would've also been good additions, but these selections are just fine.

SONGS TO MAKE LOVE TO (1993)
TRACK PRESENT: Easy
COMMENTS: Now this is technically the only song on this remix of it EP/single. It was normal to put Easy here, since it was their only Billboard 100 hit besides Epic and Falling to Pieces, and it's a great cover of the Commadores classic. It was also a bonus track on the Angel Dust rerelease.

KING FOR A DAY, FOOL FOR A LIFETIME (1995)
TRACKS PRESENT: Evidence, Digging the Grave
COMMENTS: This is my favorite Faith No More album, and I was disappointed that it didn't get at least a bit more emphasis. Granted, these are 2 of the best songs and big hits from the album, but why didn't they also include other masterpieces like Ricochet, Take This Bottle, The Last to Know or Just a Man as well? The album is every bit as great as its 2 preceeders, and why it didn't get at least 3 songs is beyond me. Oh well, there is one more song to be found on their other compliation Who Cares a Lot?, The Gentle Art of Making Enemies.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR (1997)
TRACKS PRESENT: Last Cup of Sorrow, Ashes to Ashes
COMMENTS: AotY was the band's most underrated album, and sadly their last. And it sure was the album of the year. It didn't get the best emphasis either, but the 2 big hits are here, so that's a good thing. Stripsearch (also on Who Cares a Lot?) and Collision would've made good additions too.

NEW/UNRELEASED/BONUS SONG - The Perfect Crime
COMMENTS: This song was an outtake from The Real Thing, and I must say it's great and I'm glad it has a place to be on a CD.

OVERALL: This was overall a very good compliation from one of the best late 80s-90s bands that nearly fills up the 80 minute time limit. A few more songs could've worked, but I'm not complaning now, am I? Another great thing about it is that the songs are in approximate order! (Well, The Perfect Crime could've been after The Cowboy Song, but since it wasn't released til this nah.) If you're a casual fan looking for the big hits and some underrated greatness, start here. Or if you want to start with an album, go with The Real Thing or Angel Dust, then get everything else after.

EDITION NOTES:

This compliation was released 2 1/2 years ago and is still readily avalible in local retailer stores. So you'll have no trouble finding it.

Just Wow.......2006-04-10

Well, the mosley stuff sucks but its good to see FNM roots. While Who Cares Alot is probably a better buy for a wider range of FNM greatness, this whole album is worth The Cowboy song, wat it has to do with cowboys, who knows who cares, all i know is that the lyrics are A-Grade Patton (without the humour and wierdness) and the Martin Guitar solo, my god is just wicked, the best FNM song in my books and such a dissapointment that the wider community have been denied The Cowboy song for so long.
