Walter Trout is not about tastefulness and subtlety--he is about ferocious intensity, exhilarating speed, and raw energy. This double-disc set (at single-disc price) presents Trout's complete, unedited performance from the March 2000 Tampa Bay Blues Fest (where they say he upstaged headliner Susan Tedeschi), and it is truly a thrilling ride. Running on adrenaline after a sleepless day and night traveling, Trout rolls through heavy blues rockers, slow 12-bars, soulful groovers, and even a Dylan cover. To be sure, this is pure blow-your-mind, "guitar god" kind of stuff that many blues purists may not enjoy. There are definitely times that Trout's incessant over-the-top style becomes slightly tedious, and there's not much in the way of originality, unless you count the fact that few others are even capable of such supersonic licks and unearthly tones. Still, despite the lack of a truly distinctive sound, Trout's ability to consistently fan the flames is amazing, and his voice, while not on a par with his guitar, is passionate and powerful. If you are a fan of pedal-to-the-metal electric blues-rock, few can match Trout in terms of sheer dexterity and drive. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars PHENOMENAL.......2006-11-22

Walter Trout is an amazing, amazing guitar player and very soulful singer, and this two-cd set captures that perfectly. Trout's guitar technique blows everyone away-- with the possible exception of Gary Moore. (Have those two ever gone toe to toe onstage? A frightening prospect.) Over-the-top blues rock and gutsy vocals. The liner notes are an inspiring testament to Walter's Christian faith and dedication to his fans.

5 out of 5 stars Walter Trout Melted My Stereo.......2006-10-10

This CD is a blues/rock guitar-driven 4th degree assault on your ears. If you are looking for something to brush the cobwebs out of your skull, this is it. Someone told me this was God's favorite CD.

5 out of 5 stars new discovery.......2006-08-15

I knew very little of Walter Trout before I bought this disc. The man is an amazing guitarist that reminded me of a cross between Roy Buchanon and Frank Marino. Gary Moore, Stevie Ray and Snowy White move over and make room for Walter Trout to stand proudly amoung you.

3 out of 5 stars Slow down dude.......2005-04-24

I finally picked up a W.Trout cd after years of reading about him. He is no doubt a talented guitarist. My problem is, (and I know most will say WHAT), I think he continually plays too fast. After awhile its like the solos all just blend together into one long blur. I really don't care for his vocals either. I think the best song on the album is Walking in the Rain. Great riffs and tone. To me there is only one heir to the throne of SR Vaughn and he is............Jimmy Thackery. Pick up Sinner Steet or Drive to Survive. Both are awesome....

5 out of 5 stars Jump at chance to be at Walter Trout & the Radicals gig.......2004-07-26

If you are looking for a man and a band who can give you everything they've got; look no further. If you are searching for music that will sear into your soul; look no further. Walter Trout can play his guitar up there with the best of them. He can also DO things with a guitar that will leave you speechless. In his hands, the instrument can wail, talk, cry, moan, whisper or do anything he asks of it. His singing voice is powerful and comes from the depths of his heart. He truly presents his all to you in this live performance CD. His energy will be transferred to you and be engraved into your memory and you will be grateful you found your way to the performance venue of this remarkable musician and his band. The next best thing to being there is this 2 CD album.

If you like Disney's 'Jungle Book', in particular Louis Prima singing "I wanna be like you" and King Louis talking to Mowgli, then listen to Big Maceo talking to Tampa Red in "She wants to sell my monkey" and make the connection. Remember, this was recorded in 1942! Other than that it's an excellent CD by one of the warmest, most gentle blues artists the world has ever known.

Hudson Whittaker polished up the bottleneck-guitar style of the Delta, bringing it with him to Chicago's burgeoning 1930s blues scene. He coaxed wonderfully smooth and melodic sounds from his National steel guitar, favoring emotive phrases over raw power. These 17 tracks stretch from 1928 to 1934 and include a mix of lively hokum and sober blues. The buoyant melodies, humorous narratives, and sing-along choruses of hokum are illustrated by the tawdry "It's Tight Like That," "Dead Cats on the Line," and "You Can't Get That Stuff No More," all with Georgia Tom Dorsey on piano. Rough-edged blues include "Black Angel Blues," which became B.B. King's "Sweet Black Angel," and "Things 'Bout Comin' My Way," featured here as both a vocal with Georgia Tom and as a stunning solo instrumental. --Marc Greilsamer

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Truly joyful music.......2007-01-30

It says something about Tampa Red that I had a terrible headache last night before listening to this CD, and by the time I finished my headache was gone.

Tampa Red and his partner pianist "Georgia Tom" Dorsey (later a gospel singer /composer of "Precious Lord" fame) specialized in funny, downhome, double-entendre blues songs about whiskey, prostitution, dancing, gambling, and just having a good time. "No Matter How She Does It" is a particular hoot, as our heroes sing about a girl who "shakes it so well that the judge sent the cops to jail." Knee-slapping fun, without a word of actual profanity.

Tampa Red comes off here as a sort of country blues cousin to the type of Jazz comedy and storytelling that Louis Jordan specialized in ten years later. Every existing photo of him shows him with a pleasant smile, and this infectious cheerfulness is reflected in his music, so much so that is is hard to be sad even when he sings about such ordinarily morose subjects as prison, death, and losing a loved one.

There is one drawback to this collection. Having enjoyed my father's collection of scrachy 78s as a child, I usually don't have a problem with surface noise on CDs, but some of the old recordings on this CD are in such poor condition that a few songs are almost unlistenable.

That aside, enjoy "It's Tight Like That" and other stuff that made grandma and grandpa get on the juke joint floor and "cut a rug."

5 out of 5 stars Truly a guitar wizard!.......2003-01-24

As a blues musician, I often have to research the source of the songs I perform, particularly if I want to record them. I was surprised to see the name "Whitaker" show up again and again. I was vaguely familiar with "Tampa Red" (and have 78's by him) but
unaware that he had written many of the songs that have become blues standards. This CD offers a selection of many of his songs as he performed them for the first time, and also showcases his amazing slide guitar talent, proving that he invented not only standard blues songs but also standard slide riffs and licks.
I'd recommend this to blues lovers...and especially to blues musicians! All four dewclaws up, in my book...

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2001-12-13

This is a suberb collection from one of the most underrated early bluesman and would be a great primer for the uninitiated.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Sources Of It All!.......2001-06-16

This is a superb collection of Tampa Red. I don't have all his sides, and as a rule nearly every blues compilation is missing a track or two that someone considers essential, but this is an excellent sampling. You can hear some songs that were hits in the day and you can also hear the man's incredible guitar playing. He was a slide master! And if you're human you'll only want more after listening to this compilation...

5 out of 5 stars Awsome!!!!!.......2006-11-30

This is the first of many great shows to come frm Dick, may he rest in peace. Dick knew what he was doing on all his picks except a few where he blundered slightly. Here comes Sunshine is a killer opening song. This is a good CD that delivers.

5 out of 5 stars Great Show and a great place to start.......2006-02-23

This was the first of the DP series I bought and I have a special place in my heart for it. As just about everyone else has noted 'Here Comes Sunshine' is incredible. If you buy the set just for that one song you'll be very happy. And while I agree with the reviewer who thought the version of 'He's Gone' was nothing special on this night I still give it 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Jammin' Jerry.......2005-07-11

If you're into extended Jerry jams-----this CD is a winner.
On CD 1, two songs: Here Comes Sunshine and Playing In the Band,
both have a little bit of vocals with long & strong Jerry jams.
If you're looking for just Jerry jamming, don't worry about the
bit o' vocals on these tracks. The jams are so fine that the vocals don't distract at all...in fact they're quite enjoyable.
On CD 2 there are 2 outright jams with no vocals. The first one
is vintage Jerry guitar and great; the second one is a psychedelic spacy weird thing...also great.

5 out of 5 stars There's a reason this was the first pick..........2005-06-14

To my ears this was an exceptional night out for the band. It really captures a mellow and exploratory side of the group that flows for the whole two discs. Because of the this and the great song selection it has become one of my personal favorites of the series. One of the other qualities of this show is that rather than saving up the jamming for a 30 min Dark Star they consistently and creatively jam throughout the entire discs. I have found it a good thing that this release was created for 2 discs rather than the more recent larger Dick's editions because as a listener you are able to build a familiarity with these particular tracks rather than getting lost in a sprawling collection. Finally, it is my impression that Vol 1 is mature deep Dead and may not be what you're looking for. But if so...get ready to enjoy a real gem of a show!

5 out of 5 stars aquired taste.......2005-05-29

To appreciate the dead, you need to sit back, close your eyes and listen. This cd is incredible but if listened to only in passing it can go unnoticed. There is no hit song, just a flow that needs patience to appreciate.

Wow. I am the first to review this? Unbelievable cuz it is really cool. A beautiful cross between Javanese gamelan music and electrambienewage. Actually is cool as background music for getting some important work done, like planning the new millenium. Most of it is gamelam with synth kind of setting the scene.

This just does not sound like it came from Baltimore. But apparently Macht spent some time far from Bawlmer, sipping some java with the Javanese.

4 out of 5 stars Great Early Art.......2003-07-12

"The Art Pepper Quartet," originally recorded for the Tampa label and reissued on CD by OJC, is one of the alto-saxophonist's best early albums. The session was recorded on November 25, 1956 and features Russ Freeman on piano, Ben Tucker on bass, and Gary Frommer on drums. "The Tampa Quartet," as it is affectionately referred to by collectors, along with the three volumes of the Complete Aladdin Recordings on Blue Note (two of which are currently out-of-print), are without a doubt his best work from the early to mid-1950s, and should be preferred hands down to titles like "Surf Ride" (see my review). With that being said, this disc gets four stars for two reasons. Even with five alternate takes the CD logs in at less than 45 minutes, and there are just so many other classic Pepper CDs available from OJC, including "Smack Up," "Intensity," "Meets the Rhythm Section" and "Gettin' Together" (see my review of the latter) that interested parties should start elsewhere and work their way to "Tampa."
