Holy Spirit, We Call On You!.......2004-01-06

I have been looking for this lp for 20 years. I recorded the song "Holy Spirit" from an AM gospel radio station many years ago and I never found out who recorded the song. I finally found it tonight in my basement in a batch of gospel lps I purchased from ebay. This is an awesome cd, truly a classic.

The best school choir I have ever heard.......2005-01-19

I'm apart of my High School's choir and we took a spring trip to Minnesota where St.Olaf is based. We went to see one of there rehersals. We saw Dr. Anton Armstrong and they were amazing. My best friend's sister is a S.R at St. Olaf. I bought this alubm at the giftshop. I was blown away. This is the best school choir I have ever heard in my life.

Great CD!!.......2003-08-07

This is a must for all trombonists and music historians!! The sound of these groups is just amazing! Nowhere else can you get a sound like you do with the instruments that these trombonists use. Where else can you hear a contrabass, bass, tenor, alto, soprano, and sopranino trombones all together? A great CD for a historical reference on the trombone also...tromobone chiors are one of the oldest forms of music, and THE oldest perfoming groups in the USA are the Moravian trombone choirs. This CD gives us a rare look into the past of how trombones were commonly used in centuries past, and how the tradition continues today.

Favorite Moravian chorales from childhood........1999-11-20

Trombone choirs! I love them. Everytime I hear this recording, I see again the church of my childhood and the trombone choir standing out in the snow near the front steps playing Christmas chorales during the hour before the Christmas Eve service. Why were they out there a full hour before the service? If you wanted a seat, you had to arrive an hour early, because late comers sat in folding chairs in the cloakrooms, or stood in the back. That church was filled to brimming only on Christmas Eve, because music lovers came from miles away to hear traditional Moravian Christmas music, and where else could one possibly hear it? Some of it is on this recording. The words sung to track 8 are "All my heart this night rejoices...", and that sense of anticipation and pleasure is exactly what Moravians feel as they enjoy a night of great music, sung mostly by the people in the pews, not just the choirs. It's all here. The great songs from Advent, Lent, songs of repentance, forgiveness, joy, for baptising babies and burying old people. When you hear track 19, Hosanna, think of a room full of singers on Palm Sunday, echoing back and forth to each other, the little girls and women singing back to the boys and men. My only criticism is that there are perhaps too many songs in minor keys grouped together. They evoke too much sadness and start to sound like endless dirges. The musical interpretation and masterful rendering of the chorales is absolutely delightful, not only for us who hold all the words in our heads and are singing along, but also for those who will assign their own meaning to the music.

Heavenly Music.......2002-06-24

This exceptional CD produced by the Memphis Boy Choir and Chamber Choir is one of their best ever. The selection of music is unique yet not unheard of. I have been satisfied with every Memphis Boy Choir and Chamber Choir CD I have purchased and this one is no exception. This CD makes the perfect Christmas gift for the learned listener. “During the Middle Ages, under the influence of the Kabbalah, Jewish bards began to compose zemirot, sacred songs for the Sabbath table. The lyrics were written down, but the tunes were not. So, while the poetry of these songs has survived, more or less intact, over the centuries, the music has changed as Jews in each land and in each generation have given new voice to the time-honored words.

This album presents a sampling of zemirot from various traditions and in various styles. Some of these zemirot are presented as they were originally conceived, simple folksongs intended for families to sing as they sat around the Sabbath table. In other case we have presented the traditional melodies in artistic choral arrangements. Some selections are newly composed works, reflecting contemporary responses to the ancient texts. One of Zamir's Best .......2006-03-19

As of this writing, the Zamir Chorale of Boston has released thirteen CDs. They are all fine collections of music, usually linked by a theme, but this one is my favorite, because it can be enjoyed as a continuous unitary work rather than an assortment of separate goodies. Sit back and take a "music bath" in it from start to finish. Aside from one absolutely awful edit in 'Azamer Bishvachin', there's nothing to disturb the Sabbath Peace.
