On her remarkable debut, Without Condition, Ginny Owens stands out from the crowd with some of the most pleasing originals in new Christian music. She manages this with a stable of tunes that are not only solid pop and rock arrangements of great little melodies, but by continuously taking the least predictable route to get there with minor chord change-ups, surprising harmonic turns, and twisty and courageous vocals. "Symbol of a Lost Cause" blends sultry lead vocals with a shattered drum beat, strings, piano, and electric-guitar fuzz. The title track, addressing the question of God's presence, is daring and organic, spiritually uplifting, and musically challenging. Alternately freshly sweet and profoundly deep, Owens sings with conviction, not mincing words or devolving into the genre's most familiar tricks. Rather, one hears shades of Tori Amos and Fiona Apple broadcast through an entirely new channel. --Paige La Grone

Ginny Owens' is remarkable artist with inspiring lyrics and great vocals. Her songs hit close to home and you can't help but to listen to them over and over again. I had the privilage to see her in concert and she was just as good, if not better. She is a down to earth girl with a sweet voice and cool personality.

I actually picked up this CD for free when she performed at the Sundance Film Festival a while ago. It's a really good CD. A breath of fresh air in sound and in word.

...but don't take my word for it...

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2005-09-05

I had only heard two of Ginny's songs until recently - 'Free' and 'If You Want Me To.' I don't know why I hadn't ever bought one of her albums previously as those songs are very meaningful and sound great.

Recently I had the opportunity to hear her perform live when she warmed up for Jeremy Camp. To say I was impressed with her music would be an understatement.

I hadn't known that she is blind and has been since a very young age. Hearing her sing 'Be Thou My Vision' live while seeing that she is blind really impressed me with the way she deals with and views her disability. She certainly has the big picture in mind. Also, her fantastic song 'If you Want Me To' took on a whole new meaning.

Some of the lyrics from that song are: 'I don't know the reason why you brought me here, but just because you love me the way that you do, I'm gonna walk through the valley if you want me to.'

She goes on to sing: 'It may not be the way I would have chosen when you lead me through a world that's not my home, but you never said it would be easy, you only said I'll never go alone.'

After hearing her in concert, I picked up this CD and was hooked. Her other songs have equally touching and relevant lyrics. Her sound is incredible.

You can be assured that I will be buying some of her other CDs. I would definitely recommend this one. I don't think anyone would be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Lucky find.......2005-06-23

I searched my library for different interpretations of one of my favorite hymns, "Be Thou My Vision." I had never heard of Ginny Owens, and maybe I never would have without this search, since I hate Christian Contemporary Music (CCM), which generally seems very shallow to me. Am I glad I ran across this album! Ginny's lyrics are all religious (why are so many Christian singers afraid to bring their whole selves to their albums, as if we had a "worthy / religious" box in life and everything else -- romantic love, parenting, laughter, etc. -- belonged in a "bad / secular" box?), but they are also deep and very real. In the title track, she sings about the all-too-common evangelical problem (I count myself among evangelicals) of chanting out what we "believe" and sheltering ourselves from those who disagree with us and raise questions. In "Symbol of the Lost Cause," she avoids the American-style "my God can beat you up" triumphalism of songs like "Awesome God" to embrace a God who triumphs brokenness.

She's interesting musically as well. Her songs are not bland, nor -- despite the comparisons between her and Sarah McLachlan -- do you feel like she is a Christian imitation of a secular artist. Ginny is a true artist in her own right.

I have to admit that the song that got me to check this album out is the only one that I didn't really like. Ginny sings only two verses of "Be Thou My Vision" over what sounds like a sort of throbbing noise (though maybe that is a flaw in my library's recording). The thing I could most closely describe it to is what a baby might hear in the womb -- the blood rushing through mom's veins and the beating of her heart. It just didn't do anything for me.

That aside, I'm now adding this album to my wishlist, and I'll be checking out more of Ginny's work.

I never really liked christian music other than jaci velasquez in spanish, but ginny owens is such a great song writer and singer. This is one of the best if not the best CD I have ever purchased.
