Amazon.com essential recording

The term "middle of the road" was virtually invented for Kenny Loggins, whose brand of plain and pleasant pop/rock has always managed to find a place on the charts. This 15-song set has most of the hits you'll need, including the soundtrack singles ("I'm Alright," "Danger Zone," "Footloose") and the duets with Stevie Nicks and Steve Perry. One thing is for sure: the man certainly knows a good hook when he hears it. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars If you love Kenny, you'll love this.......2007-07-17

I have been a fan of Kenny for years!! I attended my first Loggins & Messina concert way back in 1975. This is a collection of some of his more familiar hits. I bought this to replace the copie that I have literaly worn out. I keep it in my car to play when transporting my five grandchildren to and from their many activities. This one and also "Back to Pooh Corner" are their favorites. It is music that they enjoy and doesn't drive me crazy like some of the other things they listen to at home. They are both timeless music for all generations.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure For Loggin's Fans.......2007-07-13

This collection is a must for any Loggin's fan. Whether it's power ballads such as "Conviction Of The Heart" and "The Real Thing" or the edgy "I'm Alright" and "Don't Fight It" with Steve Perry, his unique voice and cool tones will surely please.

5 out of 5 stars Loggins bloggins.......2007-06-09

I was surprised by the tunes on this CD. I am very glad to add it to my collection. Loggins is a very talented musician.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-04-10

This is a wonderful CD! It contains all of Kenny Loggin's greatest hits so it's fun to listen to on the road. Well worth the money!

4 out of 5 stars It could've been better.......2007-03-25

I really like this CD, but I am really disappointed that the original song "House At Pooh Corner" isn't on it. That's the only reason I don't rate this a 5. This was a bad decision by whomever compiled this CD.

For nostalgia's sake, I wanted to hear 'Satin Doll'--and I felt that it wasn't enough. One of the last of the great song stylists, Nancy Wilson deserves to be played over, and over and over to get the full effect. A great voice.

5 out of 5 stars A great album that emphasizes Wilson's versatility........2006-01-09

Nancy Wilson can do it all--and does on this CD from 1963. A singer who sings some jazz, some pop, some blues, some soul, and some standards from the Great American Songbook, she manages to do everything well and appeal to everyone, a statement proven by the fact that during the sixties, she was second only to the Beatles in total sales at Capitol Records.

With her light, high voice and great feel for tempo and phrasing, she ranges here from an Eartha Kitt-like sound in "Bewitched" to the gorgeous ballad "Never Let me Go" and one of her best songs, the energetic "My Sweet Thing," with its syncopated pop rock sound. Throughout the album, Gerald Wilson, arranger and band leader, shows off her young voice (she is only 26 here) to its best advantage. Though he is leading a big band with unlimited potential for a big sound, he uses the orchestra almost as a quartet--the string section operates almost as a solo instrument, and the woodwind section sounds like a single sax or clarinet--despite its size. The result is that the huge orchestra never competes with Nancy Wilson, and despite its size, it sounds appropriate to a solo voice.

Some of the best tracks here are blues songs. "Sufferin' with the Blues" offers Wilson an opportunity to wail, while the five songs on the bonus tracks (the "Today's Blues" section), featuring Wild Bill Davis on organ as backup, are among the best on the CD. "West Coast Blues," a fast, off-tempo song, is a star turn for Wilson, with unusual phrasing, as she carries words across beats and measures, and fully lets go emotionally. "Tell Me The Truth," a song in which Wilson whispers that she wants the truth about her relationship, became one of her biggest hits. "My Sweet Thing," with its syncopated pop/rock beat, the most unusual song on the album, is one in which Wilson carries the tune and rhythm into pop dimensions.

If you are looking for a CD of great jazz, look at Sarah Vaughan's "Crazy and Mixed Up." If you are looking for a CD of soul, check out Aretha Franklin's many great albums. But if you are looking for a terrific album which offers a little of many genres--an album in which the vocalist can do it all--then play the samples of Nancy Wilson's "Yesterday's Love Songs" and buy this CD. This is a terrific album by one of the great, versatile singers from the last third of the 20th century. n Mary Whipple

5 out of 5 stars Nancy Blows Ella and Sarah away!.......2003-12-31

This album is again proof of why Nancy is simply the best. She may not be able to scat like Ella or sing 4 octaves like Sarah but her phrasing is second to none.

5 out of 5 stars Wilson times two!!!.......2003-11-23

What makes this an amazing recording are the arrangements of Gerald Wilson! Listen to the samples to see what I mean. Every jazz fan should own this disc.

4 out of 5 stars Igloo Magazine's REVIEW.......2005-12-01

Review by: R_Garcia, Igloo Magazine (www.igloomag.com)
(10.09.05) I will begin this review with a paraphrase from the included one-sheet: "This album was recorded very shortly after me and Gunni met Kristin and Gyda and became a four people band... It was originally released on an Icelandic label called Thule but early on a number of disputes came up which ended up dragging on for many years... We have the rights for the record back now and are really happy to be re-releasing it on our friends label where it seems to fit in like home."

If not for that disclaimer, one might take this re-release as new compositions from Múm (which I accidentally did when I tossed the CD in my car's player without reading a word.) If this indeed was to be a new release for Múm, it would most certainly be a step back. The sound quality is not exactly on par with what a Múm fan might be used to, and the major-scale over clicky-click beats thing has been beaten to death by a zillion aspiring laptop rockers in countless indie and net-releases for the last five years.

But... this release was recorded in 1999, which if memory serves, was around the time that the clicky movement was first being born (that would place Múm at the vanguard, where they belong.) This disc also provides a candid look into the Múm toolbox; the clean, patient sounds, ethereal keyboards, live instrumentation and pulsing rhythms are all there in infancy, offering up a missing link in the evolutionary story of Múm.

Highlights are "Asleep on a train" which features a hypnotic drum loop, melodica, and bells weaving in and out of a sinewave bass and water-drop melody; "The Ballad of a Broken Birdie Records" which highlights a wispy female vocal over lethargically crunchy clicks and synths; and "Sunday Night Just Keeps on Rolling" which forces the user to wait in anxiety for six of eight minutes before delivering an ejaculatory, up-tempo, bit-degraded drum rush.

All in all, this disc will find its way into my car collection and will most definitely get spins alongside other Mum discs like Summer make good and Finally we are no one. It will also serve as a stopgap until the next collection of new Múm tunes is born.

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly beautitul, haunting, stirring music........2007-04-01

It's hard to write reviews for the Lennon Sisters, as it's just too hard to put what they can do down on paper. Stunningly beautiful, haunting music from yesterday, that will never be equalled. They sound like angels, and they take you away to another place. This album is totally wonderful. Great songs, but in the hands of the Lennon Sisters they are just otherworldly. My personal favorites on here are Anniversary Song (I had never known this one, it was before my time, but it is gorgeous), their Scarlet Ribbons is simple and beautiful, Greensleeves is one of my favorites of all times, another haunting, gorgeous arrangement by them, and their Scarborough Fair is very different and takes a little getting used to, but once you do, you never want to hear it any other way. Their version of Autumn Leaves brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. I just can't say enough good about these beautiful girls, and the absolutely stunningly beautiful music that they make together. However glowing my recommendation of this CD, it doesn't come close to doing it justice.

5 out of 5 stars LENNON SISTERS' HARMONY AND MUSIC CHOICE ARE EXQUISITE.......2003-02-28

The finished product of the lennons' cd YESTERDAY AND TODAY delivers to those with a fine-tuned ear an extremely pleasing musical performance. The carefully chosen songs lend themselves to the beautifully blended voices of this well-trained quartet of sisters. The finest musical harmony is achieved with an easy precision that draws immediate attention and admiration. To this beloved group of top musicians, I say THANK YOU and keep producing my favorite music!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful harmonies, superb covers.......2003-02-06

These four sisters achieved their greatest fame on American television. Their recordings seem to consist exclusively of cover versions, but that's fine by me because they are so brilliantly performed.

These songs are from widely different sources, including traditional folk (Scarborough fair, Greensleeves) and French songs translated into English (Fascination, Autumn leaves). Among the other covers here are Sentimental journey, Scarlet ribbons, When I fall in love, There I've said it again (an American number one for Vaughn Monroe in 1945 and for Bobby Vinton in 1964), Now is the hour, This is my song and You'll never walk alone.

You don't have to remember their TV appearances to enjoy their music - being British, I never knew about them until a couple of years ago - but if you do remember them, this collection may well give you even greater pleasure than it brings me.

5 out of 5 stars The Lennon Sisters - Winners!.......2000-02-15

Life ain't fair, how can so much talent go to people from the same family!

Since I first came across this all-girl group through the haunting English air 'Greensleeves' 30 years ago, I've been a fan. Now with their Yesterday And Today album, I'll go to the end of the world for them!

What a terrific group of singers these Lennon sisters are (and they are gorgeous too!). They are wonderful to listen to especially when they do those old 1950 and 1960 standards. When they beckon me to take a trip to my old hometown (Sentimental Journey), how can I resist and say no? When they tell me that simple miracles really do happen (Scarlet Ribbons), I can't see a reason not to believe.

The Lennon Sisters can make a simple goodbye (Vaya Con Dios) sound so poignant, turn the celebration of love into such aching tenderness (When I Fall In Love, Melody Of Love, This Is My Song, Fascination, Can't Help Falling In Love) and separation into a heart-breaking experience (Autumn Leaves).

Another thing that makes this album so great is its laid-back and simple instrumental background which allows full spotlight to focus on the perfect harmony and beautiful blending of voices of the Lennon Sisters.

Dianne, Kathy, Peggy and Janet, thank you for sharing your gift of music.

This an excellent collection for people who enjoy good ,happy, sing along songs. It just baffles my mind that bands like The Monkees, Grand Funk, and others get ridiculed so badly."More Today Than Yesterday" is just an awesome song. How can anyone not smile when they hear it?It's like being unamerican or something of that nature.Pat Upton is a great singer and the band is no slouch either. All the songs are great(Listen to "Get Ready" and you should be convinced)and "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" is just so appealing. If you don't believe me just take a moment and listen. You won't be disappointed.Highly reccomended!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-05-12

This was a great CD and I love all of the songs on it. It came to me quickly and in great condition!

5 out of 5 stars Some People Think God Can't Be Glorified By Music Like This; Others Know Better.......2007-03-29

Let me state at the forefront that I prefer hymns at the worship service to choruses. I also find simpler accompaniment (piano/organ, acoustic guitar) less distracting and thus more worshipful than a fuller accomapniment (lively choir, praise band, or orchestra). That being said, I was built up by this project. Because I see my preference as a choice but not a dogma.

Can God be glorified by contemporary Christian music, even rock? Is anything too hard for God? Isn't the more important thing is a person who loves God with all their heart, etc. and loves his neighbor than being traditional?

My favorite songs on this project are "Yesterday, Today, & Forever", "Search Me", "Nothing Is Impossible", "Captivated", and "Extravagant Worship".

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!.......2007-01-13

Vicky Beeching is one of my favorite worship leaders, and having gone to one of her concerts, I have to say she is one of the most annointed as well. Wonderful CD of love for the Father and asking for His heart.

5 out of 5 stars Worship Music , kicked up a notch!.......2006-06-18

I first heard Vicky's "Turn Your Eyes" on the radio and was immediately hooked by her crystal pure vocals and the clever twist of an old classic hymn interwoven with other lyrics and given a first-person twist that took me out of the realm of spectator and drew me into the worship experience firsthand. I had to get her CD. Well, when I saw the cover of it, I have to admit that I was a little leery that I might be getting an album of hard rock. I'm almost 57 years old and, while I like most types of music, I find some of the heavier rock groups, Christian bands included, are more noise than music and just darn hard to pick out the words. But boy, was I pleasantly surprised. This CD is great! Each song has lyrics that just cut right to the core of our thirst to connect with an Almighty and Awesome God. And each song has a really great beat, too. Did I mention that? After all, I AM a child of the '60's and I don't like things TOO quiet and introspective. So, if you like your worship music intelligent, infectious, joyful, and rockin'....you'll want to add this CD to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Yesterday today and forever.......2006-05-19

I love this cd!!!!!!!! We sing lots of these songs (including yesterday todday and forever-my fav.) at my church youth group.
I first saw Vicky Beeching at the alive festival last summer, which, aside from a trip to the first aid tent (long story) was a blast!
Vicky rocks!

5 out of 5 stars This needs a more articulate review..........2005-12-10

To tell the truth, the only reason I even listened to this disc in the store is because I spotted the cover, and wondered what the hell a guy who looked like that could sound like. I had a gushing smile on my face as I realized there was real talent and expression behind Moondog's odd facade. The first album on this disc (there are two herein) is made up of more "orchestral" material like none you've ever heard before (one of these tracks "stamping Grounds" is in "The Big Lebowski". The second album is made up of a series of short "rounds"; cyclical songs with naturally repetitive compositions (think row row row your boat, or three blind mice). Due to the familiar nature of such song forms, and the unique compositions employed by Moondog, the second album is quite buoyant and joyful. This is an all around great and very familiar listening experience, and quite a timeless set of albums. Get it while you still can!

5 out of 5 stars Dave Meniketti was the stuff.......2007-03-08

I've had several Y&T albums in my day. After meeting Dave Meniketti back in 1976 at Leo's Music in Berkely where he was wailing on a flying V, I asked the name of his band and immediately bought the Cd when I returned to Fresno. I have been a fan ever since.
"Dreams of Egypt" is my all time favorite Y& T tuen and I can't wait to get this in the mail. The album wa slost years ago.
"Road" is also cool because it features Cherie Currie from The Runaways on vocals as well.
There is a lot of use of phasing which was a big trick back then. I hjad a Dirty Tricks album where they did the same thign. It does date it a little but this is my favorite Y&T album.

3 out of 5 stars Finding Their Feet.......2005-08-25

These were early days for Y&T. Although there are a few good songs on this album, most are forgettable. If anything, this album is not as strong as the debut. However, the seeds were being sown for the glorious albums to follow, and these signs are there on this record. Dave Meniketti's voice and guitar playing are in place, as is Leonard Haze's solid drumming. That is why it is such a pleasure to own this CD - to have a chance to hear a great band in development. So - this CD is for hardcore Y&T fans only - but if you are one, this is an essential purchase.

    5 out of 5 stars A Early Metal Masterpeice.......2005-06-27

Dave Meniketti, and Company unleashed more of their groundbreaking style of early heavy metal with Struck Down. This 2nd album still has the blistering guitar pyrotechnics as does the first album. Unfortunately, after this album Y&T decided to head down the bubblegum rock abyss. There is still the raw energy left on this album. Highly recommended for those who love early guitar heros!

5 out of 5 stars Better than a lot of later releases from y and t.......2005-05-30

This didn't blaze up the charts at the time but it doesn't keep it from being one of their best cd's. It is a must have if you like y and t. Definitely the best songs on here are On the Road, Dreams of Egypt and Nasty Sadie but all of the tracks are worthy on ths cd. It does rival their better cd's earthshaker, black tiger and in rock we trust. Several songs on this cd could have been on the best of cd easily.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Hard Rock With Blazing Lead Guitar.......2002-09-26

This is a fantastic hard rock CD. Everyone plays their instruments extremely well. The drumming is great! And Dave in my opinion never got his due as a lead guitarist - there is blazing lead guitar on this, as good as most any in the 70's. If you like 70's (or any) guitar driven hard rock, you cannot go wrong with this - it rocks HARD. And Dave sings great also, he's as good a guitar player/singer as Mark Farner or Frank Marino were. This is a closet classic hard rock offering, I promise.

5 out of 5 stars Y&T are the most underrated band in history.......2005-09-24

Dave Meniketti has been leading Y&T for 30 years, togeather with Phil Kennimore, Joey Alves, Leonard Hayes, later with Steph Burns and Jimmy DeGrasso Y&T has been melting faces over 4 decades. Dave and Phil have always paired up to write some of the best lyrics and rythems when you combine this with Daves lead the sound is amazing I have seen this band live almost 100 times and never grow tired of the music. Y&T is a great band and this album is a must for any fan of real metal if it's to loud your too OLD!

5 out of 5 stars FAREWELL TO THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD.......2005-06-02

RECORDED DURING THEIR FAREWELL TOUR FOR THEIR FINAL GREAT ALBUM "TEN".THIS PARTICULAR LINEUP HAD A LOT OF ENERGY AND MADE THIS ONE OF THE BEST LIVE ALBUMS EVER.IF Y&T WAS GREAT IN THE STUDIO,THEY WERE JUST AS GREAT LIVE.THEY PICKED A GREAT SELECTION OF THEIR BEST SONGS.NOT A BAD CHOICE IF YOU ARE JUST GETTING INTO Y&T.STEF BURNS REALLY GAVE THIS BAND A SHOT OF ADRENALINE,I LIKE THE FACT THAT HE SHARED LEAD GUITAR WITH DAVE MENIKETTI.ALL THE GREATNESS OF THIS BAND IS ALL OUT ON THIS RELEASE.AS USSUAL ANOTHER GREAT ALBUM FOR Y&T.

    5 out of 5 stars Too Good.......2004-03-04

Y & T is one of those bands whose real power and majesty comes through live moreso than in the studio. Daves vocals seem to have improved over the years and they are now nearly equal to his fretwork. There is NO ONE that can play like Dave. He has an amazing repertoire and skill that is second to none. I wish I could sing or play half as well. If you love dynamic, diverse power guitar this is the disc to buy

5 out of 5 stars Desde la bahía de San Lorenzo, no de San Francisco , :-).......2001-05-22

Gran disco, gran banda de R'n'R, gran directo, gran ... !

4 out of 5 stars Forever a Bay Area Favorite!.......2001-04-28

I heard my first Y&T song when I was 13. It was "Dirty Girl" off Earthshaker, and I was blown away instantly. I saw my first concert at 14, and have been a die hard fan since. I've seen them over 10 times in 4 different states. Being from the Bay Area, I'm partial to Bay area bands. This album captures fully the essence and energy of a Y&T concert. Menikette's riffs are razor sharp on "forever" and "mean Streak", and beautifully melodic on "Winds of Change" and "I believe in You". This is a must have for any Y&T collector.
