"You sound like you're having a good old time," a purist Dylan fan is spotted telling the artist in the documentary Don't Look Back just after the release of this, his first (half-)electric album. He certainly does. Updating Chicago blues forms with hilarious, tough lyrics--in fact, all but stealing the meter of Chuck Berry's "Too Much Monkey Business" for "Subterranean Homesick Blues"--on one side, dropping some of his most devastating solo acoustic science ("It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," "Mr. Tambourine Man") on the other, the first of Dylan's two 1965 long-players broke it right down with style, substance, and elegance. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars THE most influential album of the sixties.......2007-07-16

This is IT.
This is where, in retrospect, it all started. I didn't realize it at the time but I do now. There were two sixties, the Beach Boys, Frankie Avalon early Beatle "I Want to Hold you Hand", crew-cut, A-line dress, weejun sixties, and the other sixties, the Revolver, Sgt Pepper, Jimi Hendrix, Steppenwolf, The Doors, Led Zepplin, Cream, United States of America, sixties that everyone today thinks was the sixties. and it started here!

Bob Dylan, the antiwar, civil-rights, Woody Guthrie-imitating darling of the folksingers, the Voice and Conscience of his Generation, after penning "Blowin in the Wind", and "The Masters of War", stunned his purist followers with "Bringing it All Back Home". Electric instruments and a turn from trying to change the world by preaching at it to a bemused surreal satire. This, and "Revolver" are the two most influential albums of the sixties, maybe of music history. I remember.

The Beatles were wildly popular with younger listeners, but generally dismissed by music critics of the time as being a wildly sucessful but totally Pop phenominon. Dylan said they were "Bubblegum". Dylan's friend Al Aronowitz (sp?), said that the Beatles weren't that bad. Dylan and friend were introduced to the Beatles at a certain party in Manhattan AUG 64, wherein there was some smoking. Dylan and Lennon talked and found they had a lot in common. Dylan suggested Lennon should put more of his feelings into his songs. Following this party the Beatles became much more introspective, and a few months later "Rubber Soul"and the "Revolver'!. See DVD "No Direction Home" directed by Martin Scorsese for details...

"Johnnies in the basement
mixing up the medicine,
I'm on the pavement
Thinkin' about the government...

...Maggie comes, fleet feet,
Face full of black soot
Talkin the the Heat put
Plants in the bed, but
The phones tapped, anyway,
orders from the D.A.,
say they must bust in early May...

"...Keep a clean nose,
Watch for Plainclothes,
You don't need a Weatherman
To know which way the wind blows!...

...Please her, please him,
Twenty years of schoolin'
and they put you on the day shift"...

How that for starting off with a (paranoid) bang?

(and where are those Weathermen, now ...?)

or how about the heartfelt:
"...She's got everything she needs
she's an artist
She don't look back..."

or the workaday world of:
"...He hands you a nickel
He hands you a dime
He askes you with a grin if you're having a good time?
And he fines you every time you slam the door.
I aint gonna work on Maggie Farm no more..."
(had bosses like that?)

or the surreal:
"I was riding on the Mayflower when I thought I spotted land
I yelled for captain Arab, I'll have you understand,
Who came running to the deck, said 'boys, forget the whale
we're goin over yonder, cut the engines change the sail' ...

...I think I'll call it 'America' I said as we hit land.
I took a deep breath, I fell down, I could not stand...

...A telephone was ringing, it just about blew my mind,
When I picked it up and said 'Hello', this foot came through the line...

...I repeated that my friends were all in jail with a sigh,
He gave me his card, he said 'call me if they die'..."

Pure poetry, funny, insightful. The sheer volume of Dylan's genius is so overwhelming you can only get it in small amounts - I didn't understand all at first. I still hear new ideas in these songs after all these years. Notes from the Underground.

And the backup band isn't "The Band", as I always thought, it's blues guitar great Michael Bloomfield with Al Kooper trying to learn organ.

After this brilliant album, Dylan met and influenced the Beatles. The Byrds did an electric version of his Pied Piper song "Mr Tambourine Man" ("...take me disappearing through the smoke rings of my mind...". Then came Donovan's "Sunshine Superman", Vanilla Fudge's "You Keep me Hangin On". After that, there was a sea change in culture and in popular music. There was an explosion.

It started here.
This album cannot be recommended too highly

5 out of 5 stars bringing it all back to where it belongs.......2007-05-27

I used to fluctuate between this and Blonde On Blonde - or the rougher, leaner sound of Highway 61 Revisited, but neither really captured the Dylan i could and do identify with the most. This is not to say that there are not *plenty* of other songs (some less popular, like "up to me" ) that i don't just love, the way i love the riff to East Laredo Blues, but on the whole, i have to say that it is this album that does what the title promises... it delivers... it brings it all back home and wow, what a wallop it packs.

The set-list you can easily find here so i won't go through it all, but to miss this album would be to miss some of the classic Dylan and that would be to deny yourself just the chance to see whether or not you like this minstel or not. You may decide not - but don't make that decision until you've at least heard this one.

Dylan albums, like Dylan songs, are difficult to choose a "favorite." I'd be hard-pressed to pick a favorite Dylan song, but if i have to pick an album, and i admit this is tough, then this would be it.

Cheers,
s.r.p.

5 out of 5 stars BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME IS BOB DYLAN AT HIS VERY BEST !.......2007-04-26

Bob Dylan's 1965 album Bringing It All Back Home is arguably his best work. It includes three of his very best songs, the magical Mr. Tambourine Man, the darkly disparaging It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), and his tale of absolute reality, The Gates of Eden. These three are performed folk style with just an acoustic guitar and harmonica. On the album's first song, Subteranean Homesick Blues, Dylan rap-sings forboding lyrics over an electric guitar blues. He then rocks Maggie's Farm, becomes a surreal storyteller in Bob Dylan's 115th Dream, folk-sings his obligatory hate-song, It's All Over Now, Baby Blue, and even rolls out a love song (sort of) with Love Minus Zero/ No Limit, were he sings words of praise about the woman he loves.

My love she speaks like silence,
Without ideals or violence,
She doesn't have to say she's faithful,
Yet she's true, like ice, like fire.

Pure Dylan. Bringing It All Back Home has everything for the Bob Dylan fan. Folk songs, rock songs, and classic Dylan lyrics. It's a great album from a great artist at his very best.

5 out of 5 stars A good place to start.......2007-03-12

Bringing It All Back Home, released in 1965, is Bob Dylan's first flirtation with electric rock/ blues. Since the album is half electric and half acoustic, it is a perfect place for new fans of Dylan to start because they get a sample of both his electric rockstar side and his folk singer side.

The album has quite a diverse selection of songs; fast, bluesy songs ("Subterranean Homesick Blues", "Maggie's Farm", "Outlaw Blues"), slower, melodic love ballads ("She Belongs To Me", "Love Minus Zero/ No Limit"), poetic folk songs ("Mr. Tambourine Man", "Gates Of Eden") and comedy ("Bob Dylan's 115th Dream"). One of the best songs on the album is the surreal "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue". This song always fills me with inspiration everytime I listen to it.

This is a great album and a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Folk Rock's Definitive Masterpiece.......2007-02-10

Bob Dylan, the great alchemist of folk-rock music, was booed at the Newport Folk Festival, and Scorsese's 'No Direction Home' documents the hecklers yelling out "Traitor!" at many concerts. Perhaps like any genius this is the inscrutable, but predictable development for anyone who truly innovates the wheel. 'Bringing It All Back Home' is the culprit that showcases the trajectory of when Bob, the Bard, went electric. Arguably, this album is one of the three best of his entire career. It is perhaps his most innovative, but his achievements have a scope that render the past two assertions needing a huge dose of salt.

Heralding the album, "Subterranean Homesick Blues," while not as dramatic as "Like a Rolling Stone" is easily as brilliant. Complete with cutting, social commentary and plenty of images to debunk the nine-to-five existence, Dylan spills out his surreal period full throttle. Anthems rain with the raunchy "Outlaw Blues" and the folky "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)". Hypnotic, every song pulls a punch--or doesn't pull any punches! The most famous mesmerizing development is "Mr. Tambourine Man," making Dylan a troubadour for altered consciousness*. Despite the crossover, Dylan continued to be a great storyteller. The first person "Maggie's Farm" showcases his familiar wit with the details of menial labor from hell. Then, "On the Road Again" captures the same idea, but with more of a vagabond flair. "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream" meets every element at the crossroads by telling a surreal story with pointed observations. However, some of the most delightful moments reflect upon love. "She Belongs to Me" and "Love Minus Zero/No Limit" both exalt and debunk the romantic tradition he helped overthrow. "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" ends the album with a brilliant story about a misfit who trashes every sensibility of romantic notions.

An unqualified achievement, 'Bringing It All Back Home' synthesizes the outlaw with the dreamer where both folk and rock, tradition and iconoclasm meet head on and make music and culture new.

(*Dylan has moved on, and hopefully so can we.)

3 out of 5 stars Messin' with Success.......2007-07-03

First off, I absolutely love the Flower Kings and anxiously await their next release. This one though.....
OK, let me get this off my chest first - why, oh why would you play with the perfection that is the original "Church of Your Heart"? When I saw this on the CD's pre-release playlist on the TFK website, I was counting the days until it arrived just to hear a remastering of this song. (I think all TFK fans can agree that while "Stardust We Are" is one of the best albums of all time, it is also one compressed sonic mess). But instead of a nice clean remastering, we get a complete remix, and, gasp - an entire section of the song - a critical section in my eyes - is totally gone! Disappointed hardly covers it.
And therein lies the problem, for me. Most of these songs weren't just remastered, they were remixed as well. Instruments are added or taken away, changing the complexion of the songs in someways good but mostly not. For the most part, the new productions just don't stand up to the old. Several tunes, like "World Without a Heart" sound lifeless, are missing key instrumental parts (where is the lovely piano part in WWAH?) or have had the sometimes rough edges dulled down until they don't have the same impact the originals did.
Roine evidently has disdained the use of reverb for the new mixes, and for me, this new "dry" sound doesn't serve this type of music well.
Overall, it WAS a somewhat fun first listen, and of course the songs are pretty much wonderful anyway, but while there are great moments, I can't imagine listening to this one again anytime soon.
Having said that, thanks Roine for the effort - the liner notes are indeed exceptional, and maybe there is hope that you'll find time to go back and remaster (but NOT remix) the classic TFK albums like Stardust We Are, Flower Power and Rainmaker. Wouldja, please????

3 out of 5 stars Nothing Exciting.......2007-07-02

The Flower Kings (Roine Stolt) take some of their shorter progressive rock tracks and re-mix and remaster them. The chosen list is pretty good and covers their entire career up to this point. The extra, never released track "Little Deceiver" from the Rainmaker sessions is nothing special.

The remixing doesn't seems to improve the songs much and actually seems to make them 'softer.' I word I could use is 'pillowy'....almost giving some of the slower parts of songs a new-age feel to them (not a good thing in my opinion). The punch of the original songs is missing, replaced by a broadening effect to fully take up the sonic range. Another point of dissapontment......should you really mess with "Church of Your Heart?" The classic Flower Kings song has been truncated and the dramatic key change at the last part of the original version is gone. That was the part of the song that got me hooked on the song in the the first place. Also "I am the Sun part II" seems to be truncated as well, and again, the best part of the song, in my opinion, is missing.

Songs picked from newer releases (Adam + Eve and Paradox Hotel) are less affected by the mixing and come off much like the originals.

All-in-all, this is a good collection of Flower King songs, but the remixing doesn't seem that great of an improvement of the originals.

5 out of 5 stars I agree with Murat.......2007-06-28

Thank you Murat, for the fine review. I agree with everything you mentioned. I give the album 5 stars; it's that good.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent chronicle of The Flower Kings sound.......2007-06-26

The Road Back Home is a two-disc compilation album put together by Flower Kings leader Roine Stolt. Not only does it feature the band's relatively more compact and "easy listening" cuts, the songs have also been treated to a new mixing job by Stolt. Add to that several newly recorded guitar solos as well as some backing vocals by Roine Stolt and Hasse Froberg. Some of the numbers have just been remixed whilst some others also feature previously unheard passages, instrumentation, and vocal parts.

The song long-time fans will want to hear the most will probably be "Little Deceiver", a leftover from the band's Rainmaker sessions. It is an interesting experiment where the tune wanders off more into Dire Straits-goes-country territory, bringing forth a true solo statement from Stolt and Froberg who are responsible for everything this song has to offer: unusual harmony vocals, cool loops and sound effects, and steady, straightforward drumming.

Also new on the CD is the band's Genesis tribute "Cinema Show", originally recorded in 1998. Being one of the greatest Genesis songs ever, Stolt says the band was rather nervous while recording it, but the result is nothing short of mindblowing. The acoustic guitar tone, the layered melodies, the awesome vocal parts, and last but not the least, Tomas Bodin's mindblowingly beautiful key solo that not only honours Tony Banks' original work but also adds its own touch to it -- everything is phenomenal about this piece. As noted in the liner notes, that solo is testimony that "great keys can be played with emotion without a trace of blues or jazz".

It would be impossible and meaningless to describe each song on this compilation. After all, they all represent a different era of the band; and they are meant to be enjoyed best in their original context. However, the little nuances brought out in the mixing stage do warrant a mention. "Cosmic Lover", for instance, features new vocal and some clarinet addition as well as a heavier focus on rhythm. This brings out the funky aesthetic and underscores the brilliant Beatles-like vocal harmony. "Stupid Girl" has a brand new guitar solo; and truth be told, I can't choose which one I like better cause the new one is truly sublime. Also, the guitar solo of "A Kings Prayer", one of the greatest Flower Kings songs ever, is different. I love how the deep message is conveyed on this one amidst glimmering acoustic guitar notes and McCartney-like vocal arrangements.

The last few minutes of "Church of Your Heart" have been cut off, and rightly so. The result is a more direct and powerful tune driven by tons of organ work by Bodin and soaring harmonies by Hasse Froberg. The African tribal rhythms merge seamlessly with a gorgeous soprano sax arrangement on "Grand Old World" whilst "Monkey Business" proves once again why everything on Unfold the Future is gold. Jonas Reingold's fretless bass, Hasse Bruniusson's percussion rhythms, and Stolt's unmistakable guitars form the musical aspect of the otherwise tragic lyrical theme. Stolt's vocal part in the intro of "The Road Back Home" has been replaced by Hasse's more fitting singing -- perhaps the best Retropolis song with its melodic hook and blazing Hammond elements.

The songs with Pain of Salvation's Daniel Gildenlow providing backing harmonies have mostly been left untouched, such as "Starlight Man" and "Cosmic Circus", but you can still tell a remix was done on them. The somewhat cluttered soundscape layering of the former piece seems totally gone on the reworked version of "Different People" off of Stardust We Are. Unlike the original version, the piece has a stronger psychedelic centre here thanks to Stolt's meticulous remixing, and the melodious flow is more evocative. The backing voices have enhanced this cut greatly as well.

It doesn't matter whether you're a long-time fan or a new listener. Any Flower Kings fan should pick this up in a heart beat and hear these songs in their new format. If you have never heard any of Flower Kings' studio albums, on the other hand, then, depending on the songs you like the best here, you should go and pick it up impromptu. Once you're hooked, you'll want to have their entire discography anyway.

Kudos to Roine Stolt for not only compiling and remixing all these songs, but also for the detailed song-by-song analysis he offers in the liner notes. He even designed the booklet and cover art himself and added some photos as well. The packaging is superb -- it couldn't be any better.

I wish all compilation albums were this amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Back Home Again - John Denver.......2007-03-29

I remember having this LP Album in the 70's and was very happy to have it on CD with some of my very favorite John Denver songs - especially the song "Matthew", which I haven't been able to find on other John Denver CD's. This music brings back lots of good memories.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-03-09

I'd be still happy with my vinyl copy still if it weren't so scratchy in places. The remastering sounds fresh as the day it was recorded so I'm happy with the cd. It captures a wonderful period in John's career. If you're in any doubt about this one allay your fears as it's John at his country mode best. Although having said that you can't beat John's live work. That's where he really shined! You're still the greatest John!

5 out of 5 stars Great Memories!.......2007-02-25

My mom had this album on vinyl. She later bought it on cassette and she played it in the car all the time. Later I bought my own copy on tape. I wore that out during college and later bought the CD.

Every song on this album is a classic and if you are looking for an album to play while driving along on a rainy day you can stop looking right now.

You can feel the emotion poured into ever lyric. Every song is as sincere as you can get.

I love this album and I'll never be without a copy!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-01-31

I love this album. My mom and I used to listen to it on 8-track in the late 70's and it's exactly like I remembered it. The best thing...the lyrics! I've been trying to figure out what was in Grandma's Feather Bed for 20 years.

5 out of 5 stars Truly the best of John Denver.......2007-01-12

If you like the early John Denver, while he was still wearing his glasses and true to his folk origins, you'll love this cd. His voice is pure, as are his lyrics. "Matthew's Song" is a joy to hear and is based on the life of John's uncle. "Grandma's Feather Bed" will have your toes tapping along. This cd is both joyful and sweet. A must-have if you love John Denver.

Back Home is Eric Clapton in a good mood, filled with upbeat toe-tappers about hearth and home (a young child even puts in a cameo on "So Tired"). Blues-rock ("Lost and Found"), reggae ("Revolution"), and R&B (the Spinners' "Love Don't Love Nobody") mingle comfortably with laid-back pop (George Harrison's "Love Comes to Everyone"). Recorded around the same time as Me and Mr. Johnson, his bestselling collection of Robert Johnson songs, Clapton's first recording of (mostly) original material since 2001's Reptile is a combination of solo compositions, covers, and collaborations with writing partner Simon Climie. Backing musicians include John Mayer (guitar), Blind Faith mate Steve Winwood (synthesizer), and longtime associate Billy Preston (keyboards), whose expertise with the Hammond B3 shines brightest on the Vince Gill cowritten "One Day". There are no real surprises on Back Home, just Clapton doing what he does best--with an extra spring in his step. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Album Description

Back Home, Eric Clapton's first album of original material in several years, follows this summer's historic and heralded Cream reunion and 2004's gold, Top 10 Me and Mr. Johnson covers disc (and it's audio/video companion, Sessions for Robert J). With Back Home, three-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and 16-time Grammy winner Clapton finds his way home with another modern classic.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars I liked it.......2007-05-08

The sound of this album is very relaxed and joyful.
Eric looses his shoulder round into a comfortable slope.
It is nicely laid back yet has some vitality.

4 out of 5 stars Has God found a new religion?.......2007-05-01

After reading the reviews (both positive and negative) on this album, I felt compelled to add my 2 cents. This is a great album.... WAIT!!!! Before you start sharpening your pitchforks let me finish my thoughts. This is a great album as long as you aren't expecting a classic Clapton album, ala the Clapton of Cream or Derek and the Dominos.

The tracks are more upbeat and hearty than the Clapton tracks that reeled us in, but what do you expect? Art is a reflection of heart, and that has never been more evident than in this album. At long last Eric is happy, after a life of angst that included losing his son (inspiring the song "Tears in Heaven"), and beating a heroin addiction, the man lovingly known as Slowhand is happy, is that such a bad thing?

That being said, this isn't your typical easy-listening album either. Tracks like "one track mind", "piece of my heart" and George Harrison's "Love Come to Everyone" really let Clapton's musical genius shine.

I gave the album 4/5 stars because although it is a solid album, with catchy beats, stirring lyrics and the brilliance that is Sir Eric Clapton, it lacks the character that has made SlowHand the guitar God that we all revere.

4 out of 5 stars Good Evolution.......2007-03-19

Clapton has evolved and is writing good songs that reflect maturity both musically and personally. I have seen Clapton live and it is this newer material in which he shines and plays the most passionately. This album is mostly soul/blues songs mixed with a few acoustic numbers. All are well written and Clapton's guitar comes through distinctly and soulfully. The best songs with classic Clapton guitar solos are One DAy and Run Home to Me.For me I like to hear lyrically soulful songs reflecting something real like longing and family and then have Clapton apply his guitar expertise bringing these songs to an emotional head. For those longing for the old Clapton--it was and is great material--but the man has evolved--

4 out of 5 stars No Shakespear, but good listening .......2007-03-05

Clapton took a beating for this CD. It was given mediocre status, at best, by critics and fans alike. Why do we want our artists to be sin eaters? Clapton happy is.... Clapton happy. Aren't we happy for him?

Okay, fair is fair, the opening track is a little self absorbed and weak. The musicianship rocks, but the lyrics are trite. The second one isn't much better. After this, though, the CD really picks up. The songs are well crafted, the lyrics don't swerve back into limbo territory. "Piece of My Heart" is better than any "sway" love song I've heard in a while, although we are not living in romantic times. " Back Home" , the finishing set, does confirm that Clapton has been on quite a journey, but he's ready to put aside the weary journeyman in favor of the settled, stable soul. What's wrong with that?

This CD is not Eric's best, but it is also not a throw-away. Open your mind and let Clapton open his heart!

1 out of 5 stars "God" is Dead.......2006-11-09

If you are looking for boring, lifeless adult contemporary music, then this CD is for you. If you are looking for a great guitar CD, this isn't it. I had such high hopes for this CD after the Robert Johnson CDs and the Cream reunion, but all winning streaks must come to an end, and Clapton's comes to a screeching halt with this. Of all the Eric Clapton CDs that I like, this isn't one of them. I'm glad Clapton is now in a happy place (and deservedly so), but this CD just doesn't do it for me.

Released during the era of leisure suits and pet rocks, the film Superman: The Movie has aged about as well. But the often-clumsy charms of Richard Donner's cartoonish, hit-and-miss take on the Man of Steel was blessed with at least one superlative artistic effort: John Williams's epic score. The composer's Oscar-nominated music (coming on the heels of Star Wars and Close Encounters) was a wall-to-wall heroic symphony, rife with memorable melodies and ominous arrangements. Almost every original cut on this soundtrack appears in an expanded version, supplemented by nearly a dozen previously unreleased cues and alternate takes. Featuring a deluxe slipcase and extensive, new liner notes, this is the definitive release of one of Maestro Williams's greatest scores. --Jerry McCulley

1 out of 5 stars Original 1978 Recording?.......2007-04-04

FIVE STAR FOR MUSIC. 1 STAR FOR AUDIO. Ok I've wanted this recording for almost 4 years. Now I got it. I am a discerning listener. This soundtrack is not the best quality. Tape hiss is very pronounced. You can tell it's taken directly from a cassette recording. I have other digital recordings of this music. They are miles ahead of this cd. Soundtrack is on the Rhino label. What? Rhino is not known for high fidelity. So it is very deceiving for one to buy a cd thinking it's John Williams conducting on a new recording in 1998 or whenever. It's the actual 1978 recording. Now let me unleash my rage. This thing sounds as if it's recorded with a single microphone in a bathroom, at a truck stop. Yes the music is phenomenal. My favorite track is #2 Krypton. I was hoping to discover some new hidden melodies that I've never heard in previous recording (original 1978). Nope. This IS the 1978 recording. So I will be getting the Debney recording just so I can hear what I'm missing. Love the music. Just can't hear it. ALL OF IT! But cool booklet. I can't listen to a booklet. But I got it. Whoopee.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME! John Williams shows again why he's the master of movie scores.......2006-08-31

After over a year of trying to find a seller of this fine soundtrack, I finally found it! It is high time that the full score was released on CD.
The original soundtrack release from 1978, while still an excellent collection, was sadly lacking in several of the best cues from the film. Most important of these was Track 12 (Disc 1) in which the helicopter crashes on the Daily Planet's roof and dangles precariously above the street. Williams builds on it, introducing Superman's theme into it as Clark Kent runs across the street, then rips open his shirt to reveal the 'S' - the symbol of the House of El - then enters the revolving door & exits as Superman. At the end of this is one of my favorite cues; the Superman theme is played as the Man of Steel appears above Metropolis, flying over the city on the hunt for criminals. 'Crime of the Century' (Track 6, Disc 2) was one of my favorite cues; this one portrayed the missile convoy as it made its way along the freeway, where Luthor staged the accident to get his cronies close enough to sabotage the missiles. There are too many new tracks to list here that should have been included the first time around, just a lack of space precluded this from happening.

5 out of 5 stars Is John Williams Superman???.......2006-08-20

After listening to the CD, John Williams must be Superman. By far, the greatest movie score ever written.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-08-10

Other than the over kill of "Can you read my mind", an excellent collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hector, about the liner notes..........2006-07-14

I have the previous edition, and the notes that came with it were nestled next to the CD in a thick booklet (with a cover of Reeve in front of an American flag) that was large enough for the slipcase cover, but too big to fit into the CD case front. Otherwise, the one-sheet cover that came with your soundtrack is identical to the slipcase version.

5 out of 5 stars Great music.......2007-04-05

The pipes, like a few other things, are something you either love or hate. If you are not a Scot, they may sound like someone is scalding cats. If you are Scot, or even partly so, they will make your blood boil. This album certanily does that. It has a mix of traditional and more upbeat music. The traditional "Amazing Grace" is fantastic and the last selection is an upbeat Caribbean rendition that is great.

3 out of 5 stars Not just pipes.......2007-02-12

I purchased this CD looking for bagpipe tracks to listen to. The recording of Amazing Grace is flawless, and inspiring. However - much of this CD is the entire band playing more modern music (of course this album was recorded in the 70's). The pipe playing is excellent, but this is not really a bagpipe CD.

5 out of 5 stars Finally Found It!!.......2005-08-03

I have been searching for a CD of this recording for ages! In 1971, when it was originally released, I was 10 years old and couldn't appreciate the album that my brother played endlessly. As I got older I started to miss it. I found a cassette copy several years ago, but am afraid to use it anymore for fear of it breaking. My brother told me he had found a copy of the CD at his local Borders, and since I don't have one in my neighborhood I checked good old Amazon!! I have just ordered and I am looking forward to receiving it. I'm not a music critic, but after hearing many pipe and drum recordings, this has got to be the best I've ever heard.

4 out of 5 stars A thousand horse cavalry charge!.......2005-06-11

I judge bagpipes by Scotland the Brave. This is magnificant; like a thousand horse cavalry charge. The only problem is that, at 45 seconds, it is too short.

It would have been far better if it had been played once on pipes alone and then again with the brass dropped in behind the pipes. A thousand highlanders screaming across the battlefield, followed by the thousand horse cavalry charge. Just thinking about it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand and my blood pressure go through the roof.

This album is magnificent, but it could have been awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Updated Amazing Grace.......2003-05-09

Having reviewed the original "Amazing Grace" recording by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards from 1971 it seems that Amazon.com now offers a series of recordings that the bands released in the late 70 and 1980s under the same title. The first half of this CD contains tracks from a 1976 release of the bands entitled "The Lengendary Amazing Grace" In addition to a fine updated version of the now famous tune four years after its original world wide hit, this part of the CD contains some interesting selections for band and pipes. "Una Palma Blanca" is a true example of how the RSDG bands went to great lengths to explore the full combined sound. The regimental band supports the pipes with a variety of modern sounds including an electronic bass guitar which many military bands in fact use for concert purposes today providing as it does a useful Continuo bass line for a military band. "Theme in Glory" and "Turn on the Sun" are additional examples of just how good the RSDG bands had mastered the concept of combing their resources. These are truly exciting pieces to listen too. The regimental band shows its stuff with "Rockout" an arrangement of classic old rock music themes. The pipes and drums provide three medleys and are simply surperb. One can hear that a distinctive change had taken place in the ensemble sound of the pipe band since 1971. The RSDG drummers have incorporated the use of their tenor drums to creat an amazing drummers' accompaniment to the pipes. This innovation would become standard in the piping world, but it owes its origins largely to the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards pipes and drums. Listen to how magificent the pipe band sounds when they first enter to the 6/8 medley starting with "Macneils of Ugdale". You won't find a better sound even today. The Retreat medley starting with "Lochanside" is also amazing. Its worth getting the CD just for those tracks as well as the others. Perhaps the most haunting combined tune is an arrangment of Handel's "Largo" with the solo pipes doubling for the voice parts. Truly beautiful and moving.

The second part of the CD contains recordings of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards from the later 1970s. The listener will note that there is a subtle, but different recorded sound to the bands. They don't come across quite as clear as in the first 12 tracks on the CD. Again, there is the same rich selection of music with imaginative arrangements and unusual sounds. The regimental band gets highlighted more in these remaining tracks and the same versatility is still there. The "Slave Chorus" from Verdi's "Nabucco Opera" gets an interesting modern treatment. "Moonliner Rock March" is another great arrangement of rock tunes that gets the special Royal Scots Dragoon Guards touch. The pipes and drums are back with several combined medley's as well as two solo displays. The drummers show their stuff in "Drummer's Salute" displaying their modern percussion techniques that are still inspiring today for the pipe band world. All in all a worthy continuation of the "Amazing Grace" tradition that was started in 1971 and carred on since then. It's good to see that some of the many recordings the bands made through the years are now on CD. Enjoy the unique sound of the bands of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards who did a lot to popularize Scottish and military band music in general around the world. Truly a legend of "Amazing Grace"

You won't find a warmer, more powerful and moving tribute to the City of New Orleans and its people and culture than this five-star, 13-track album that features some of the city's most revered artists. Young and old, the New Orleans Social Club members capture many facets of the Katrina tragedy while also celebrating in distinctive 'Nawlins styles the music that helped make American popular culture famous the world over. Nearly everything on this sumptuous collection of angry, compassionate, patriotic and hopeful sentiments are cover songs. But they are covers like you've never heard before in the hands of Cyrill and Ivan Neville, Marcia Ball in duet with Irma Thomas. Dr. John, Henry Butler, the subdudes and others. While Ivan Neville reworks Credence Clearwater's "Fortunate Son" into an even more sympathetic victim of an alienating bureaucratic system that underscores this democracy's appetite for war and domestic neglect, the Mighty Chariots of Fire let go a joyful gospel challenge to the nation in "991/2 Won't Do." But the political hue and cry that hangs over many of these tracks, including Dr. John's impromptu and melancholy reading of Fats Domino's "Walking to New Orleans," there are also some classic New Orleans music moments where engaging style, spirit and rhythm and nutthin' else rules the day. Just check Trombone Shorty's tasty "Hey Troy, Your Mama's Calling You," or The Sixth Ward All-Star Brass Band Revue whipping up a familiar medley of tunes as if it were a big pot of gumbo, and you know right then that the spirit of the city can never die, come hell or high water. Highly recommended. -- Martin Keller

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-06-27

This is an outstanding choice for those who are looking to be exposed to a full range of musical genres native to the Crescent City. One of the better CDs I've purchased in recent memory. Imminently listenable! Cyril Neville's reworking of an old Credence Clearwater standard is an instant classic!

5 out of 5 stars Sing Me Back Home.......2007-06-09

Created just 6 weeks after Katrina, this album reflects the emotions of the artists in an amazing way. The musicians of some of New Orleans' best.

5 out of 5 stars #1 on my most played list 2006.......2007-01-22

I am a musician and I play alot of instruments and genres. I like alot of different kinds of music..."Sing Me Back Home" is by far the best album I've procurred in quite a long time. The New Orleans Social Club is the dream "house band" for any front man or woman. The emotional breath of the album is really deep and full; the grooves are funky and clean.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Compilation.......2007-01-04

Being a former resident near New Orleans for 40 years, I always loved the music of that city. Since retiring to the Philippines, it is even more appreciated now. The message of "Sing Me Back Home" can act as a rallying cry to those that left after Katrina. Both the artists and the songs were selected to portray the vast culture of New Orleans. The CD is truly a musical gumbo of styles, and there is something in the pot for everybody.

5 out of 5 stars Feed Your Soul.......2006-07-02

"We made a big ol' batch of gumbo and invited some of our favorite piano ticklers, street paraders, rhythm-and-blues singers, Mardi Gras Indians, troubadours and funkateers to celebrate the indomitable spirit of New Orleans. So grab a plate, fill it up and FEED YOUR SOUL"- The New Orleans Social Club inviting their fans to this new CD to raise money for New Orleans.

"Sing Me back Home", from the New Orleans Social Club, has a cast that came together after the Katrina disaster. The super group, featuring Neville Brother Ivan and Meter Leo Nocentelli--lay down piano-heavy Rock and Blues with such musicians as Irma Thomas, Dr. John, Cyril Neville, and the Subdudes, among others, bring the sorrow, anger, hope, and soul of the city's people. These musicians know precisely what it means to miss New Orleans, and they're singing, as the title suggests, to ensure that their city's spirit comes home. Grammy producers and friends to music, Leo Sacks and Ray Bardani gathered a dream team of their Delta-born musicians for a collection of songs that sing with and to the soul. This CD was recorded in just a week.

Cyril Neville's "This is My Country" and you feel the urgency and love for his city.

Ivan Neville sings the John Forgery's "Fortunate Son," The flavor of New Orleans comes alive with this rendtion.

"Look Up" is a stirring spiritual rendition by Irma Thomas and Marcia Ball.

Dr John sings "Walking To New Orleans", sorting the pace to the return.

Trombone Shorty's spirited "Hey Troy, Your Mama's Calling You{ begs for foot tappin and hand clappin'.

"Loving You Is On My Mind" by the entire group is an emotionally laden song.

"Somewhere" by Henry Butler is a particularly affecting song.

"99 1/2 Won't Do" by The Mighty Chariots of Fire has a feel of excitement and this world re-owned gospel choir sings it with gusto.

The Subdues sing "Make A better World" this group of Delta City musicians came together to sing for their city.

"First Taste Of Hurt" by Willie Tee, who is a Louisiana swamp singer, with a fine voice, sing sof the pain they all feel.

"Where Y'At? (Medley: Jesus On The Main Line\ I'm Walking\ The Saints" The Sixth Ward All-Star Brass Band Revue featuring Brother Charles Neville is a rousing and fitting review of songs from NOLA.

"Chase" sung by Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, a harmonic tribal Unity that dates from the 1800's. This song sings about "no where to go, why chase me away".

"Why" sung by John Boutte sums up the mindset of the damaged Delta through Annie Lennox's song. John Boutte who was in Brazil when the hurricane hit but returned right away, says, "I've been here listening to everybody sling arrows at each other and no one is doing anything. Why do I see empty trucks passing by? The wind didn't do it, the rain didn't do it, the levee did it. We'll always have a will to make it. It's human nature. Hope lies in the people of New Orleans."

There is some feeling of loss and negativity by the participants in their minds but not in this CD. This is a passionate meeting of souls who have come together to sing for their city. There is sorrow, loss and wounded pride mixed with the love of their city. It all shows in "Sing Me back Home".
Highly Recommended. prisrob 7-01-06

"You sound like you're having a good old time," a purist Dylan fan is spotted telling the artist in the documentary Don't Look Back just after the release of this, his first (half-) electric album.

5 out of 5 stars You Tell Me Santa Claus.......2007-07-05

I have tried to place HIGHWAY 61 and BLONDE ON BLONDE ahead of this one (just as all those entrenched and over-hyped rock critics uniformly do), but can't. This remains his best (along with BLOOD ON THE TRACKS). "Mr. Tambourine Man" is like an eternal morning.

4 out of 5 stars Folk Rock's Definitive Masterpiece.......2007-05-09

(Oooops! I meant 5-stars!) Bob Dylan, the great alchemist of folk-rock music, was booed at the Newport Folk Festival, and Scorsese's 'No Direction Home' documents the hecklers yelling out "Traitor!" at many concerts.

5 out of 5 stars Never Heard a Better Album Than This One.......2007-03-10

This is a truly great album from cover to cover. The mix of folk, rock, blues, acoustic and electric is dazzling. Dylan is in a class all his own when it comes to writing and delivering a song. It's All Right Ma and Subterranean Homesick Blues are Dylan at his wordsmithing best. To my mind, Dylan's 4 great albums are this one, Freewheelin', Highway 61 and Blood on the Tracks. I've never understood the acclaim that Blonde on Blonde gets. To me, it sounds like he's drunk on about half the songs and his vocals are way off key in many places. If I could take one album to a desert island, it would certainly be a Dylan and this would probably be the one.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and important transitional album.......2007-01-18

Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" is a CD filled with strange and dramatic and poetic images. This is a transitional album before he bacame less acoustic and more electric in his music. In that sense, it presages the wonderful and powerful "Highway 61 Revisited," which marks his final break from the folk/protest period of his career. But this is clearly a transitional album.

There is a softer side to the work, including songs such as "She Belongs to Me" and "Love Minus Zero/No Limits" and "It's All over Now, Baby Blue."

On the other hand, there is the wild and crazy ride of the album's title song. Lines burst forth with telling images; electric guitar is in the foreground. Some lines that stand out:

"You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind's blowing"
"20 years of schooling and they put you on the day shift"
"Don't follow leaders, watch the parking meters"

On "Maggie's Farm," the listener gets a dozen reasons why the singer doesn't want to work on Maggie's Farm anymore.

"Bob Dylans's 115th Dream" is one of my favorites, as one gets a series of strange and weird images, as Captain Arab and his crew visit America. The song starts with Dylan beginning the song and bursting into laughter--and then starting over again. The images of this song are well worth attending to. One line sticks out. As the singer tries to find someone to help him get Captain Arab out of jail (a long story there), he says to someone "They refused Jesus." To which the person responded "Well, you're not him."

"Mr. Tambourine Man" is a well known classic that does not diminish with time. "Outlaw Blues" has one stumbling into a lagoon, at 3 below zero at 3 in the afternoon. "On the Road Again" features, again, evocative images. "Gates of Eden": "It's all right ma, I can make it." This song features images that stick with the listener as well.

This is a strong album, and well worth listening to.

1 out of 5 stars Defective CD for Bringing it all Back Home.......2007-01-05

The original CD was defective, so I returned it, and a replacement was promptly provided, efficiently and conveniently. But, the replacement was defective too!! I threw the damned thing away. I don't have the time to keep requesting replacement CDs. All the other CDs I have ordered through Amazon work fine; just Bringing it all Back Home; two consecutive defective CDs.

Go figure. I am very disatisfied with this transaction.

2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.
