This is an excellent compilation of CCR's tunes from the late 60s, early 70s. There's a reason why Credence tunes kept popping up in movies and commercials. It's great music and evocative of the era from which it comes. No need for me to review the individual tunes; anybody with a radio has head most of them. A must-have for any music fan.

Substitute grits for glitz, soul for sheen, and wry humor for mythic self-regard, and the Amazing Rhythm Aces could have been the Eagles. Though they didn't fly as high commercially, the Aces' blend of rock, country, down-home rhythm & blues, and even gospel continues to satisfy on this combo reissue of the band's first two mid-'70s albums. "Third Rate Romance" remains the Memphis band's signature song and major pop hit, while "The End Is Not in Sight (The Cowboy Tune)" anticipated the changes in commercial country a couple of decades down the road. Rhythm aside, the key to the band's appeal is frontman Russell Smith, whose songs and singing transcend musical boundaries with amazing grace. --Don McLeese

How often have you heard someone say how much they hate country, except for Johnny Cash or "O Brother Where Art Thou?"

Here's a compilation that person should enjoy.

Featuring old tracks from Cash, Elvis, Hank Williams, Ricky Skaggs, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, and more, this cd breathes of the authenticity of yesterday.

As a compilation, not every track is outstanding, however I enjoyed most of them, skipping only a few. The standout track is "Farther Along" by Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, and Dolly Parton.

Mainstream, popular Country music is what you get on this double CD album. From the dawn of the 1950s, when commercial recording interests took a firm hold on this particular strand of America's musical tradition, to the end of the 1980s, when other styles started to squeeze Country out of the charts.

In the late 60s and early 70s, it was widely acknowledged that the two gods of Country were Johnny Cash and Jim Reeves (selling better than ever after his untimely death). So it is strange that Reeves's star has waned so quickly, and he is excluded from a compilation like this. That would have been unthinkable thirty years ago; now it is unremarkable.

On the other hand, Jerry Lee Lewis definitely does not belong here. When Tennessee Ernie Ford says "If you see me coming, better stand aside. A lot of men didn't, a lot of men died", you don't really take him seriously. When Lewis introduces himself as "The Killer", you get the uneasy feeling he really means it. His music is on the fringes of country and his attitude is on the edge of sanity.

Still, this is a good, representative collection and is available at bargain prices, so has to be recommended. I always take it when I drive through the Mojave or the Sierras. For me, this is music for the open road.

5 out of 5 stars Four decades of country number ones.......2005-07-29

Only one of the thirty-six tracks here didn't make it to number one in the American country singles charts, that being God bless the USA, which the compilers understandably selected to represent Lee Greenwood here in preference to any of his country number one hits. In its way, that selection shows that number one is not the only thing that matters in the music business - some of the most famous songs in popular music never made it to number one in any chart. Nevertheless, the number one position does indicate a certain measure of popularity and this collection contains many great country classics.

This compilation, being by Hip-O, has easy access to the vaults of the record labels that are now part of the Universal group, so those labels dominate - however, Hip-O have licensed some tracks from the Sony / BMG group, so Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Charley Pride and Eddy Arnold are included. The real surprise is that Reba McEntire and George Strait, two artists who each had several number one hits for Universal labels in the eighties, are omitted. You'd think it was easier for Hip-O to include them than to worry about Dolly and the others.

The tracks are in chronological sequence, beginning with Hank Williams in 1951 and ending with Patty Loveless in 1989. 1989 is an interesting and appropriate end-point, as that was the year when a new generation of singers changed everything in country music, or so it seemed. Of course, the new generation has recorded a lot of great music (though how much of it can truly be described as country is a matter for debate) but I know that many country fans regard 1989 as the beginning of the end of their kind of country music.

The compiler clearly likes the seventies best as there are fifteen tracks from that decade with seven tracks each from the fifties, sixties and eighties. I can well understand the compiler's preference, as it was a very good decade for country music, both at home in America and internationally.

With a compilation like this, it is always possible to argue about track selection - whether the song selected for the chosen artist is the best, whether some omitted artists should have been included and so on - but when you look at it overall, this is a brilliant compilation that provides a great introduction to four decades of country music - and it comes with liner notes by Rich Kienzle.

This 36-track collection chronologically covers nearly four decades of country music beginning with Hank Williams 1951 hit "Hey, Good Lookin'" and ending with Patty Loveless's 1989 hit "Timber, I'm Falling in Love." For any 2-CD set to adequately cover four decades is a nearly impossible task--especially when both discs run under sixty minutes.

This collection could easily have been expanded by an additional dozen or more tracks, allowing the compilers to focus more attention on country's golden era, namely the fifties and the sixties. There are only five tracks from the fifties and eight from the sixties, while the seventies--an era marked by crossover artists like Glen Campbell and Kenny Rogers--is represented by fifteen tracks (nearly half of the total).

In fact, the compilers of this anthology placed a lot of emphasis on crossover hits. Twenty of these No. 1 country hits also hit the top 40 on the pop charts, with "Sixteen Tons," "All I Have To Do Is Dream," "Before the Next Teardrop Falls" and "Rhinestone Cowboy" placing No. 1 on both charts.

There's only one serious misstep in the song selection. While it DID reach the top of the country charts in 1972, Jerry Lee Lewis's versions of the Big Bopper's "Chantilly Lace" simply is out of place. And personally, I could have done without Lee Greenwood's maudlin "God Bless the U.S.A." [Besides, it's the only song that didn't reach No. 1.] The only other flaw in this collection is that even though it runs through 1989, there are no artists from country's new traditionalism movement. Where's George Strait or Randy Travis?

With that said, this is an overall satisfying--albeit brief--look at four decades of country music. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Originally known as a folk music label, Folkways, founded by Moses Asch in 1948 and now owned by the Smithsonian Institution, also released a number of fine bluegrass records over the years as folk revivalists became hip to the mountain style. This anthology digs deep into the Smithsonian-Folkways catalog of bluegrass albums (1956-1992), with virtually each track representing a different group/performer. The Stanley Brothers, Bill Monroe, The Country Gentlemen, Doc Watson, Snuffy Jenkins, and Red Allen are all included, and they are just the best-known artists here. Highlights for me include OUR LAST GOODBYE by the Johnson Mountain Boys, THE LITTLE GIRL AND THE DREADFUL SNAKE by The New Lost City Ramblers, TRAIN 45 by Smiley Hobbs, and HELLO CITY LIMITS by Hugh Moore, not to mention sides by the list of performers mentioned earlier. What's truly amazing is the realization that this CD anthology is only the tip of the iceberg of S-F holdings, which I believe are all still available in their original form - scores of albums. Hardcore bluegrass fans know all about those albums; CDs such as this do a great service for those just learning about the music or the S-F catalog, or for those just wanting to dip their toes into the music. It's a solid CD filled with terrific bluegrass offerings, with a 30-page, fact-filled booklet included, all for a great price. Definitely worth acquiring.

The plethora of worthy collections riding on the coattails of O Brother, Where Art Thou? continues with Classic Bluegrass From Smithsonian Folkways, 25 tracks of serious bluegrass untarnished by rock, pop or other outside influences. Recorded between 1956 and 1992, it includes three numbers from what's purportedly the first bluegrass LP ever, Folkways' American Banjo: Three-Finger And Scruggs Style. Dashing mandolin runs by Earl Taylor (and his Stoney Mountain Boys) and bluegrass's patriarch Bill Monroe (with Peter Rowan) open and close this crisp disc while Ralph Stanley, singing with older brother Carter, offers clawhammer banjo picking.

Many of the performers - Red Allen, Doc Watson and Hazel Dickens, for example - grew up with the music. The Harley Allen-Mike Lilly Band (Harley being Red's son) shows how the genre's trademark tight harmonies can turn smooth (in an Osborne Brothers style) rather than sharp, without sacrificing the essence of true bluegrass. The New Lost City Ramblers' "The Little Girl And The Dreadful Snake" as well as The Lilly Brothers And Don Stover's "'Neath That Cold Grey Tomb Of Stone" evoke mountain music's darkness, but then a wildfire fiddle breakdown such as David and Billy Ray Johnson's "Grey Eagle" comes along to show its fun side. It's a sumptuous buffett of bluegrass.

With 25 tracks from the FOLKWAYS archives this is the most generous helping of bluegrass music that one might
hope for. An incredible roller-coaster ride through the most diverse styles. If you aren't a fan of bluegrass music, just pick track 21, 'Billy in the Lowground' (an instrumental that clocks in at exactly o n e minute) and you'll see the light.
The sleeve notes, packaging and sound quality are superb, as you might expect from a record from the prestigious FOLKWAYS label. As a German, I must admit that in European folk music nothing that I know comes close to the sheer exuberant energy of bluegrass. It's the perfect antidote to the whole MTV catalogue with its 100 %predictability. Doc Watson's two tracks on this CD, 'The world is waiting for the sunrise' (track 11, together with the excellent Roger Sprung) and 'The train that carried my girl from town'(track 15) fill me with awe about the incredible wealth of material that this pivotal figure of American folk music has produced. Quite definitely one of my records of 2002.

This is an excellent collection of country hits, especially for those of us who grew up during this time-period. This collection may not be suitable for serious country music fans, but it does provide and excellent selection of music by lead performers from the 1950s through the 1970s for those of us who appreciate Country-Western music. I was very pleased to find several songs I remember from my youth, including: "The Battle of New Orleans," "El Paso," "Six Days on the Road," "King of the Road," "Flowers on the Wall," "Big Bad John," "The Three Bells," "Ring of Fire" (I was a big Johnny Cash fan as a kid), "Ode to Billy Joe," "When You're Hot, You're Hot," "Rhinestone Cowboy," "The Most Beautiful Girl," "Convoy" (yes, I had a CB radio), "The Gambler, and others.

Check out the other songs on the title list to see if you remember these. The collection comes with 3 CDs, one for each decade. The sound quality is good, too.

My Parents and my Sister are all enjoying these songs from the days when we remembered Country Legends. This CD Collection is tremendous... has all of the greats on it. Highly recommend it to anyone wanting to hear the good "old" songs.

I bought this for my Dad for Christmas, but I can't wait to borrow it. My jaw dropped as I read the song list for this set. While a few don't really fit (When You're Hot, You're Hot???), the set is filled with some of the best songs ever to be played on country radio.

I hope there's a Volume II.

Growing up in the '50s and '60s, I remember the songs on this set very well. This is a good review of one off hits like the Browns "Three Bells" (I couldn't stand that song as a kid but kind of enjoy it now), the Statler Brothers' "Flowers on the Wall",Floyd Cramer's "Last Date", "Detroit (I want to go home)", "Abilene", "El Paso" (notice the city name theme), and a host of others. All the major players are represented, Johnny Horton (Battle of New Orleans), Hank Snow (Movin' On), Patsy Cline (I Fall to Pieces), Johnny Cash (Ring of Fire), on and on and on. However, its for the more obscure hits that you should purchase this set. A great overview of the period. Hey, I discovered that Webb Pierce was a real rockin' musician!! Bet many of you didn't know that either!! The most interesting stuff is the '50s and '60s. The '70s goes into the Willie and Waylon (and similar artists)thing which you probably have on other collections. However, the sound quality is great and the early stuff fantastic!! If you like country music, buy it!! If you like country music and want to drive someone crazy who does not like traditional country, buy it BIG TIME!!

    Rock and Roll s the thing, and Jerry Lee s the King... or so said an English fan once upon a time somewhere. Elvis fans might dispute that title, but nobody else in the history of popular music would dare call himself The Killer. Of all the legends who came out of Sun Records in the 1950s Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison no one would have bet the last one standing would be the pill-popping, whiskey-guzzling, gun-waving hellion from Ferriday, La. Except The Killer, of course.

    Jerry Lee Lewis took black rhythm & blues, white gospel and other funky Mississippi sounds and turned them into rock and roll. But Jerry Lee s life also is, and has always been, his piano; he has kicked and banged and set on fire (literally) many of them over the course of six-plus decades.

    He almost never made it to Austin City Limits. He cancelled one appearance, and only weeks before this recording on October 17, 1983, his wife died in a freak swimming pool accident at their home. But he did make it, and what we have here is one of the most amazing performances ever to go down on the ACL stage. Throughout the day he was a perfect gentleman, showing up on time and acting very graciously to one and all, but once he hit the stage, all hell broke loose. The songs speak for themselves; they re ALL here.

    For many years later, Jerry Lee would carry a tape of this show to play for friends (and himself, many times). When producers tried to book him again for a return performance, the response was, Jerry Lee doesn t think he could possibly do a better show.

    This CD captures all the hits and more, and includes songs that were never aired on the original TV broadcast.
