5 out of 5 stars Great Gaither Fare.......2007-07-12

Have grown to expect good stuff from Gaither and this is another one where he hits the target! Good stuff. Love it.

4 out of 5 stars We're fans........2006-03-10

For those not particularly interested in gospel singing, this CD may not appeal to you. We do enjoy the Gaithers and have several DVDs and CDs in our collection. We have especially enjoyed David Phelps who is no longer with the group, and we do miss his high tenor stylings that just make you want to stand up and clap.

4 out of 5 stars title says it ALL!!!.......2005-09-08

Really is almsot "The BEST" and yes, there are a few cool tunes missing....."I'm Gonna Sing" and "On The Authority" are strangely missing, though I'm guessing thid disc is about the best VOCAL arrangments, and not the all-out most enjoyable tunes......but just about there , the bad parts stop....this is an amzing collection of songs!!!! "Second Fiddle" is just spectacular. 4 and a half stars!

5 out of 5 stars Love This Album.......2005-08-27

I have been listening to the vocal band for 10 years now and absolutely love the CD because it allows me to have all my favorites in one place and gives me a few new ones to listen to also. I aboslutely adore Guy and David and couldn't wait to buy this CD. Hope it brings joy to everyone else like it does me.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta Be In Your Collection.......2005-08-18

I tell ya, if you are a fan of gospel music you gotta have this CD in your collection. My wife and I have been to a Gaither Concert, seen "Jerusalem" and "Israel," and this CD puts it all together.

5 out of 5 stars I Do Believe - Gaither Vocal Band.......2007-07-06

This was the first Gaither Vocal Band I ever bought. I enjoy the 'Homecoming series' and had heard a couple of their tracks on some of these. When I finally purchased this I was in for a treat! The close harmonies and wonderful melodies added weight to the already 'Jesus Centred' lyrics.
A joy to hear in this day of 'me' centred Godly music...I'm completely sold on the 'Southern Gospel' music now. There's nothing to compare

5 out of 5 stars The Best of GVB.......2007-06-30

I have listened to the GVB for along time. I like all of their music, but when I want to listen to the best one, this is the one I choose. I like the 'old songs' plus they included the new. Fast and Slow on this CD. I listen to it often and have since it came out, will always be my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Great selection of songs.......2007-03-15

Who in the world gives as much pleasure as the Gaither Vocal Band?

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-01-21

What can I say-a wonderful CD of the Gaither Vocal Band and listened to very often

3 out of 5 stars Not quite to par.......2006-04-17

To anyone who has not heard the Gaither Vocal Band and likes southern gospel, YOU WILL LOVE THIS CD! however, if you are a long-time vocal band fan, it might disapoint. If you are looking for the stellar tenor vocals of David Phelps and amazing lead of Guy Penrod, they are few and far between on this recording. Only to be fouond on Sinner Saved By Grace and More Than Ever. There are some great classic songs but in comparison to their previous Album: God Is Good, and Their next album: Everything Good, This cd is just mediocre. If you want upbeat country songs, this is for you. But if you long for the classic Gaither powerhouse vocals in dramatic ballads, go for Everything Good or God Is Good!

5 out of 5 stars Give It Away.......2007-05-28

I bought this CD after seeing the Tv Special that The Gaither Vocal Band did. What an excellent CD.Movings songs Like "Worthy is The Lamb" ,'Why Me"and "Jesus Loves Me" are mixed in with some great uptempo Gospel numbers "I Catch 'em,God Feeds 'em","Journey To The Sky','CHild Forgiven" and the rousing title track 'Give It Away".There is the catchy song'Love Can Turn The World".This is among the Best work The Gaither Vocal Band has done and I would highly reccomend this CD !!!

3 out of 5 stars Some Good. Some not.......2007-05-21

I like the GVB because I am not a total fan of southern gospel, and they sort of give you some of the great vocals of southern gospel without the twang. But I have to say that they broke one of the cardinle rules of christian must for me... you never, ever try and cover a song previously done by the Imperials. It just can't be done. On this project they did two.. bread on the water and Eagle Song. They were not even close on Bread on the water, but did a better job on Eagle song.. makes me wonder why they didn't cover Eagle Song when they had Russ Taff who sang the original version with the imperials.

5 out of 5 stars ALL-TIME FAVORITE GVB!!.......2007-05-09

I've been a loyal fan of GVB from the beginning. I've favored some CD's over others through the years, as expected with any group. This CD is truly one of the best. The blend is great and the selection of songs is incredible. As with all GVB CD's, I don't hesitate to recommend this one!

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST!!.......2007-03-20

I have every Gaither Vocal Band "album" out there...I've been purchasing them since it was only a trio!! And I have to say, this blending of voices is probably the best ever!

What I really like about the group now is that there are no "stars"...which makes them sound much more like a quartet, and less like a backup band to one of the members.

The music on here is wonderful and refreshing. I have to disagree with one of the reviewers who claimed there were no songs on here that you would want to listen to over and over.

"Through" is such an uplifting song...especially if you are currently going through a difficult time. "Jesus Loves Me" is a song many of us have sung since we were little kids. The fresh spin on it is brilliant. "Give It Away" is a toe-tapping song you could listen to all day.

I believe you will enjoy all of the songs!

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Acappella - Gaither Vocal Band.......2007-07-06

What a wonderful album, I listen to it in the car Praising Jesus!!!

It always makes me remember "how Great is our God". Fantastic harmonies and super Words!!! Exceptionally good!

3 out of 5 stars Four guys, not one group.......2007-03-15

Some nice arrangements in here and all of the guys are definitely powerful, skilled singers, but it's infrequent on this CD that you hear the group singing as that -- a group. I kept getting distracted by the distinctly different qualities of each voice poking through, battling one another even. There's not much blend or match between the voices here, particularly when they are really "letting loose" and cranking the chords. They each want to belt it out, and it sounds more like four different guys singing at the same time, than one group singing together.

The track that most consistently comes across with a unit sound, where the individuals meld into one sound, is the last track. That's really wonderful...until the spoken prayer comes in, which seems to take away from the emotion of the words & harmony of the song, doggone it.

5 out of 5 stars wow!.......2007-02-03

This is by far the best gospel CD that I have ever bought, bar none.
Russ Taff brings the tonal quality that the vocal band has been lacking (even though they're always amazing).

5 out of 5 stars Gaither Classic - of course.......2007-01-21

This gets played quite often. Soothing and wonderful Gaither music, you can't go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Gives you goosebumps!.......2006-02-18

When something isn't broke don't fix it-in other words this group needs to stay the same. David Phelps is the concrete of this foursome-such God given talent- the power of his voice. He brings out the best in everyone he sings with.I acutally got goosebumps when I heard the last 2 songs. I have bought 2 of David's cds featuring him only and I have to admit he looses something on his own. David has the rare quality of singing best when others accompany him- others cause his voice tones to change and bring out the best in him. When he sings with the other 3 men he can unleash some of the most gripping chords- you can actually hear chords that aren't being sung but are produced when they are singing in perfect harmony-true barbershop.

5 out of 5 stars Best GVB CD Ever!.......2006-03-10

This is probably my favorite GVB CD that I've heard. The songs are filled with so much emotion, like in "Satisfied", you really feel the song when they sing it. It's a good blend of up-tempo songs and the "monster ballads" they're known for. If hearing David Phelps on "Child, You're Forgiven" doesn't bring a tear to your eye, nothing will. And the song "He Touched Me" has always been a favorite of mine, from hearing it in church as a child and even now. And their version of "The Baptism of Jesse Taylor" is amazing. I was so happy to be able to hear that song again! The arrangements are great and the guys have made a superb CD that I keep near to listen to all the time!

5 out of 5 stars God is Good, Gaither Vocal Band.......2005-12-09

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2005-07-07

This is the first real recording with David Phelps on tenor, if you don't count the Christmas CD. This very well may be the greatest recording ever done by any artist ever. Even the weak songs are pretty good, but there are about 9 or 10 you will listen to a 1000 times.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL CD-POWERFUL VOICES.......2001-08-29

THIS CD IS MARVELOUS!!! TO HAVE 2 POWERFUL VOICES(JONATHAN PIERCE, GUY PENROD) IN THE SAME GROUP SAYS WONDERFUL THINGS ABOUT BILL GAITHER. THIS MAN IS AMAZING, TO BE ABLE TO FIND SUCH TALENTS. I LOVE ALL THE SONGS. JONATHAN PIERCE ON HIS SOLO'S KNOWS WHEN TO BE VERY POWERFUL AND WHEN TO SILENT HIS BEAUTIFUL VOICE TO BLEND WITH THE OTHER VOICES. WHEW, WHAT AN AMAZING TALENT!!! I RECOMMEND TO EVERYONE TO BUY THIS ALBUM...

4 out of 5 stars Southern Classics Vol. II.......2000-07-24

This continues the recording of classics with the "Gaither Touch" that the first volume started. The best cuts are: Count On Me ( A powerful song). Bill's solo starts the song off more mellow and personal and then Guy Penrod's solo cranks it up with a soulful side that he hadn't shown on previous performances. He puts as much power, emotion, and kick in it as Michael Bolton could do, (but not to the point of excess.) The Old Rugged Cross Made The Difference is also a powerful cut with Penrod once again giving it all he has, and is a great arrangement. Farther Along is a good, new arrangement of the classic hymn, giving Jonathan Pierce a shot at the high and powerful type of solo. Sweeter As The Days Go By is a nice arrangement of the song that kicks, and gives Penrod a chance to adlib on a descant toward the end. They also update Search Me Lord with a modern arrangement. This, as I recall, was the first CD of their's that started the move toward integrating a country style into their material on several songs, but there is still the Inspirational, and Black Gospel material on here that they've previously been known for, as well.

4 out of 5 stars SOUTHERN CLASICS PRETTY GOOD.......2000-03-07

I THINK SOUTHERN CLASICS WAS A VERY GOOD CD. I WOULD RECOMEND TRACKS 1,4,AND 11. I BELIEVE THEY ARE THE MOST POWERFULL.A MUST FOR ANY GVB FAN.

5 out of 5 stars More of the excellent quality from the Vocal Band.......1999-09-15

I am a "Vocal Band" fan and I listen to their music all the time. This album is just more of their excellent talents and sound. You can really feel the presence of the Lord when you listen to their music

5 out of 5 stars Powerful songs with meaningful messages.......1998-08-24

Perhaps one of the best of the Gaither Vocal Band recordings. If you appreciate the Gaither Vocal Band you will love this CD. I paid more for the recording in a retail store and had to wait two (2) weeks. The Amazon price represents a substantial savings.

4 out of 5 stars (shrug).......2005-07-07

This is OK. I would have given it 3 stars if not for "great gettin' up morning," which is fantastic. Many of these songs were redone on the Hawaiian CD, with Phelps on tenor, so that is better.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2004-06-18

I'm a huge fan of Gaither Vocal Band and I thoroughly enjoy this CD. The harmony is tight and the song selection great! There are upbeat, toe-tapping songs and there are songs with tremendously moving lyrics. I highly recommend this CD to any Southern Gospel fan or for anyone thinking of trying Southern Gospel for the first time. It's certainly a must have!

4 out of 5 stars Cant think of a fitting title for this review............2003-04-13

This was a good CD to listen to, although when you hear the line up with David Phelps do these songs, its easy to understand why David is in the group. His vocal range is (in my opinion) endless..... Johnathan Pierce does a great job on this cd, but David is "the bomb".... And now since Russ Taff has joined the band, aside from the Angelic voices of Heaven, this line up is perfect as far as I'm concerned. Now if I could just get Bill Gaither to set up an IMPERIALS reunion with Armond M., Russ T., Dave W. Jim M. I'll be a happy camper!! Thanks and Enjoy this CD....

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal.......2003-01-18

Interestingly enough, I heard this CD last out of most of the Gaither albums. Honestly, the reason I picked it up was to see how good they would sound without David Phelps. I was very impressed. And you all know how I think David's voice is tops in any category. Jonathan Pierce does a great job of blending with the other voices and doing solos. I give him my stamp of high approval.

The song selection is excellent. Instrumentation is excellent. Recording work was done well. Vocal blend with music is excellent as the music never overpowers any of the vocals. On a few songs, the bass guitar levels are a little too high in volume and bass presence. Mixing and mastering was pretty good, as were the vocal dynamics. All the vocals sound pretty consistent from song to song. This is often not the case with their other offerings, except "I DO BELIEVE." Gaither tends to record different songs at different studios (Im not sure why). This CD blows away their most current offering ('Everything Good'). Not that "Everything Good" is bad but on every level mentioned above, this CD surpasses it by leaps and bounds.

The 'I do Believe' album from Gaither was my favorite and the standard by which I measure many group vocal albums. This album often matches the quality of "I Do Believe" and at certain times may even surpass it. I listen carefully to whatever music is placed in front of me (I've been producing, mastering, mixing, and recording professional albums for 20+ years). Out with the new, in with the old. This one's a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Always A Favorite.......2001-06-28

I host a Sunday Morning Gospel radio show and among the hundreds of albums at my selection, this one gets its airtime EVERY week. Each track has its own piece of character that begs to be replayed! I've become a Gaither fan because of THIS cd! My personal favorite, and the most requested, is Singin' With The Saints. It, and many more on this album, are the upbeat Christian tunes that make you want to get up and make that joyful noise!

5 out of 5 stars Good gospel CD!.......2003-07-08

I've loved the Gaithers along time, they are my favorite gospel singers! And I think this is a really good CD, that they released. My Mom really loves their song "John the Revelator." I like it too! And I also like "Lord feed your Children." and I like "Build An Ark." Those are my 3 favorite songs off of this CD. I haven't listened to it all yet but I will get to that! :-D Hehe. If you like some really good good gospel music BUY THIS CD TODAY! DON'T WAIT! IT'S REALLY GOOD! :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

3 out of 5 stars It's fine.......2002-03-22

I really enjoy the Gaither Vocal Band. This is definitely not one of their albums that I enjoy the most, however. Although the group's harmonies are as good as they always are, I am disappointed to admit that no song on this album really "moved" me the way I am ordinarily moved by their performances. I guess I could summarize my review by saying buy this album if you're trying to build a "complete" collection of GVB albums. Otherwise, you may enjoy some of their newer albums more than this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2000-04-04

I have become a GVB fan in recent years and bought this CD because of "Lord Feed Your Children". I was not familiar with the lead singer on here but after listening to this CD several times since receiving it on Thursday it has become one of my favorites. Love the up-tempo stuff, their wonderful harmonies and the change of pace with "Build An Ark". This CD shows the incredible range of talent that Bill Gaither has managed to assemble over the years as he keeps re-creating his group.

5 out of 5 stars differant.......2005-07-07

I am a die-hard GVB fan. There are two things on this CD which make it worse than the previous ones. First, Russ Taff is quite a drop-off on baritone from Mark Lowry. Mark Lowry was SMOOTH, and really complemented Guy P. & David P., while Taff, well, he's too...rough.
The second is the conversion of David Phelps from soul-full and rich to contemperary and light. To be sure, the man still sings like no one else, but he's not as powerful a voice as he used to be.
That withstanding, this is a great CD, because there are some fantastic songs. "I'm gonna sing" is just great. So are 'Alpha & Omega,' 'Everything Good,' and a few others. "oh love that will not let me go" is perfect.
There are a few songs on this CD that are horrible.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2004-03-16

I acquired this CD entirely by accident - I bought the Gaither bluegrass gospel DVDs and this CD came packaged with them. I have never been a big fan of Gaithers; so many of their songs seem trite and sappy when you look at them on paper. I was not real thrilled at first with the non-bluegrass CDs they included, but decided to give them a whirl in the player anyway.

I was floored. From the very first notes of this CD, you are completely drawn into the music. What appears trite on paper is absolutely breath-taking when you hear it done by committed Christian singers like them. I now start to understand why so many people are fans of the Gaithers.

I thought that, contrary to the reviewer who was disappointed in David Phelps' appearances, Phelps did figure prominently in songs like "Alpha and Omega." I especially liked Russ Taff's singing in "Heartbreak Ridge and New Hope Road." Of course, seeing the Australian Homecoming video (which uses primarily the songs from Everything Good) helps since Russ explains how the song references his own life. And, of course, the a capella "O Love That Will Not Let Me Go" is absolutely spine-tingling. It makes you want more a capella singing from the band. (If you feel this way, I urge you to buy the Gaither Band's CD "A Capella".)

Is the CD perfect? Of course not. I do agree with the reviewer who mentioned the mixing problems, especially the bass guitar. As a bass player myself, I didn't like the bass line choices made in some songs; especially over-using the low string of his five-string bass. And I agree that in "O Love," when Bill sings the solo line it doesn't even sound like him - it almost sounds like he was put through a flanger. :-)

But, please don't let these small problems dissuade you from buying this excellent CD. I'm not familiar enough with Gaither CDs to say whether this is one of their best or one of their more ordinary ones; but I can say if this is one of their ordinary productions, I can't even imagine what their excellent ones would be like. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2003-08-31

This is without a doubt one of the best Gaither records. It features a wide range of songs that are well done and cutting edge.

The blending is smooth and the addition of Russ makes the sounds of the group just that much more gritty. From soaring accapella to rocking country gospel, this CD will bring everyone but the harshest sticks to their feet for at least one song.

I have only been listening to Southern Gospel music for about two years. In that time, I have not left home without this CD. At the age of 46, I went back to school for two years to complete my ambulance education to become a paramedic. The music on this CD got me over some major tough times with school. The song "Not Gonna Worry" became my theme song. Each day, before and after each exam, I would listen to and sing along with this song for the inspiration, knowing that I was not in school for my own purpose. I have e-mailed the words of this song to another EMT who is struggling with paramedic school. She now is using this song as her education theme song.
I do not have a lot of listening education in Southern Gospel music, but this CD ALWAYS makes me sing and raise my hands to God with an excitement for life. Now it is my theme song in my career. Each time I get an ambulance call, I hum/think about this song, because again, I need the inspiration to do a God-inspired work for my patients. Thank you, GVB, for being part of my education and career.

3 out of 5 stars Everything (Just) Good - Except Two Songs, Which Are Great.......2003-01-10

The Gaither Vocal Band continues to be (arguably) the best men's gospel quartet recording today. This recording is the first since Russ Taff replaced Mark Lowry as the group's baritone.

The theme of this recording seems to be our faithful response to the faithfulness of God. Several songs talk about heaven - the final demonstration of God's faithfulness (Alpha and Omega, Knowing You'll Be There, When He Talked About His Home). Another group of songs discuss how God comes through, redeeming us when we are at our end (Heartbreak Ridge, When The Rains Come, He Came Through). While the last CD released before this one (I Do Believe) dealt with trusting God in the midst of the hard times, this offering seems to be more settled and resolved, on the other side of the struggle of faith. The message is clear and encouraging. However, I must say that this recording is not one of the groups best.

There are no really bad songs on the recording, but there are few that are really great, either in terms of the power of the message or the musical content. In fact, on the scale of bad to great, I'd give most everything on the recording a rating of "good". The exceptions are two songs that are (in my opinion) great. The first (O Love That Will Not Let Me Go) demonstrates the beauty of four-part accapella harmony on a rich, classic hymn. The second (He Came Through) gives new baritone Russ Taff a chance to show what his ability to interpret soulful songs will add to the group.

My advice is this: For those who are new to the GVB, this should not be your first purchase. Try "God is Good" or "I Do Believe" for a recent recording that is superb. However, if you have most everything the GVB has put out recently, don't hesitate to buy this one. You will find a lot of good songs, and a theme of being faithful to a faithful God.

5 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2005-07-07

This is the first CD with David Phelps, and unfortunately they don't feature him much. This is a VERY good Christmas CD, one that you will play in the summer. 'Mary did you know' is awesome, and so are 'Hand of sweet release' and 'Go tell everyone.'

5 out of 5 stars Great GVB Christmas Album.......2002-09-02

I have always loved the GVB music and this album was not a disappointment. There are so many great songs and the Gaither Vocal Band belts them out as they would a regular album. This is an album that can easily be listened to all year around. I highly recommend this album!

3 out of 5 stars A GOOD ALBUM.......2001-12-06

THIS IS A GOOD ALBUM, HOWEVER I THINK, BACK HOME IN INDIANA, TESTIFY, SOUTHERN CLASSICS II, LOVING GOD LOVING EACH OTHER WERE BETTER ALBUMS...THE HARMONY ON THIS ALBUM IS NOT AS GOOD...SOME OF THE VOICES ARE TOO PROMINENT, ESPECIALLY THE TENOR...SONG SELECTION IS VERY GOOD...I LIKED THE ALBUM OVERALL...IT IS JUST THAT SOME OF THE VOICES NEEDS TO BLEND BETTER...

5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL!!!!.......2001-09-04

This album is one of the best albums I've ever heard, period. Not just for Christmas, or Southern Gospel, or Gaither Vocal Band. The production is superb. The singing is fantastic. It's just one of the best!!! Only one word can describe this album...beautiful!!

The gems of this album are "Mary, Did You Know?" (penned by Mark Lowry), which showcases the power of these mens' voices, and "Hand Of Sweet Release," a moving song that tells how a little baby born in a manger was the one who would save us all.

If you don't own this album, BUY IT!! You will DEFINITELY be pleased!!

5 out of 5 stars Christmas Music You Can Enjoy All Year Long!.......2000-10-28

Guy Penrod has one of the great lead voices anywhere and he is allowed to shine on many of the songs. Do yourself a favor and buy this for yourself for Christmas!
