5 out of 5 stars Keep it Spinning.......2007-02-09

Seriously, I don't understand why this group isn't more popular. This CD is up-tempo and fun to listen to. It isn't angsty, 'edgy,' or sound like the empty pop you hear on the radio. Man their guitars sound sooo cool!

Favorite Song: Safety Pin

3 out of 5 stars Don't expect too much.......2006-06-28

The Spin Doctors have been something of a guilty pleasure of mine since "Pocketful of Kryptonite" came out. I've been buying each new album as soon as I find out it exists (usually about six months to a year after it comes out - has anyone ever fallen as far off the radar as the Spin Doctors have?). But it's been so long since the last one that I was hesitant about buying "Nice Talking to Me".

But then I read all the glowing reviews saying that it's the second coming of "Pocketful". After I confirmed that it features the entire original band (I'm surprised how little mention is being made of that), I decided to go for it.

My first impression: really disappointed. I didn't like the album at all on first listen. It just sounded like the band trying to revive the formula of "Pocketful", but making the guitar sound heavier and streamlining everything to make it even more commercial. Trying to regain fame by appealing to the lowest common denominator. So after the first two spins, I put the CD away and forgot about it.

I think the problem was that my expectations were too high after reading all the hype. A week or so later I gave it another listen, and it quickly grew on me. I'm still not wild about the mix (too harsh and heavy sounding), but the song "Margarita" has one of those choruses that stays in your head for hours, "Can't Kick the Habit" has that nice little instrumental/guitar solo part at the end, and "My Problem Now" has clever lyrics about romance gone awry. After those songs established a beach head, the other tracks started growing on me too.

It's not even close to being as good as "Pocketful", and to be honest I don't even find it as enjoyable as "Here Comes the Bride" (am I the only one who really liked that album?), but "Nice Talking to Me" is worth picking up if you like the Spin Doctors formula. Just don't get your expectations too high.

5 out of 5 stars Pure, unadulterated ear candy you don't feel guilty listening to.......2006-06-13

The Spin Doctors' tale is enough to make any aspiring band think twice. After achieving explosive highs with their multiplatinum funk-rock-pop infused record "Pocket Full of Kryptonite," the band collapsed, producing two more albums that flopped miserably, losing their guitarist due to serious in-fighting, and then losing their lead singer to a rare form of vocal-paralysis.

Yeah, it was THAT bad. However, sitting atop such a disaster is a delightful comeback story that comes to us in the form of "Nice Talking to Me."

The Doctors' last album, "Here Comes the Bride", was quite a departure from their earlier fare, transforming them from funk-pop jammers to a studio-heavy, pastiche-minded straight up rock band. Though admirable in its own right, it certainly didn't provide the same high as 'Pocket Full of Kryptonite' did, much to the dismay of the band's fans.

"Nice Talking To Me" sees the band returning to its roots, and in high form. Never bogged down by the sloppiness of their 'Pocket Full of Kryptonite' follow-up, 'Turn It Upside Down' or by the strangeness and studio-reliance of 'Here Comes the Bride,' the album romps through 10 tracks of pure funk-pop.

This is no massive musical revolution, so picky listeners and snooty critics look elsewhere; 'Nice Talking To Me's strengths are the strengths of pop-rock at its best: catchiness, conciseness, and approachability. None of the tracks, save for "Can't Kick the Habit" extends to jam-band lengths, nor do any of them ever fail to entice the listener to sing along. But, for all their popiness, they never seem to fall prey to the copycat syndrome to such an extent that you feel like you might as well tack the tracks onto a Matchbox 20 album; for all their similarity, one instantly knows by the hard-driving funkiness of the title track to the warm upbeat clap-your-hands "Candy" to the soft, even thoughtful "Can't Break the Habit" to the happy, incisive, and revenge-driven "Margarita" that this is ear candy that won't make you nauseous.

Plus, the lyrics aren't the standard tiringly over-serious, over-written Matchbox 20 fare--they fit their tunes with a bit of goofy wit and straight-forward poetics. Chris Barron's voice fits in well in the funk grooves, carries the melody lines in the pop fills satisfactorily, and is agile enough to produce the occassional mile-a-minute vocal without butchering words or losing momentum.

Though it won't win any words for ingenuity, "Nice Talking to Me" delivers the goods; Spin Doctors fans can rejoice, as they've just received the album they've always wanted, and everyone else can bob their heads and tap their feet to the delightful pop melodies that stay in your head without making you sick to your stomach.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is fresh and it rocks!.......2006-04-14

I found this CD by accident at a music store. I was a big Spin Doctors fan around the time of their debut CD when I was in college. I used to play it at my college radio station before it caught on commercial stations. This CD later got played to death and I think anything the Spin Doctors came out with thereafter (good or not so good) was ignored by the public. This CD is great and has the freshness of their first success. My two favorite songs are Safety Pin and Candy, but there are so many others. I have no idea why mainstream radio stations aren't picking this up, but I forget that most FM stations are crap anyway these days no matter where you are. I guess it's time to get satelite radio and an Ipod. I hope the Spin Doctors stay together and make more releases like "Nice Talking to Me". They deserve another look by everyone. This is one of my prized CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Best Spin Doctors album ever.......2006-02-04

I was a dedicated Spin Doctors fan back in the day, but lost track of them over their 10-year sabbatical. I was pleasantly surprised to find a new album sitting on the shelves while I was Christmas shopping. I snatched it up right away and have never looked back.

This is their best album. Insanely clever lyrics wrapped in a much more mature, funk-blues-folk package. A great deal of fun.

4 out of 5 stars I Love This Song!.......2006-02-20

I love this song, it's a classic, and every time I hear it in a club I have to rush out to the dance floor. Sony has re-issued this single to cash in on Pete Burns' (lead singer of Dead or Alive) recent appearance on the UK tv show Celebrity Big Brother. In one of his tasks as a housemate, he was asked to perform this, his 1985 UK #1 single.

Included on this CD single is the original 1985 7" Version (which appeared on the 1985 LP "Youthquake") that was produced by the legendary P.W.L. team of Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman. Stock, Aitken and Waterman would eventually write tracks for Kylie Minogue, Rick Astley, Donna Summer, Samantha Fox and Bananarama.

The 1985 "Performance Mix" is also included on this single, though it is labled the "Murder Mix" incorrectly. This is a 7:27 extended version of the original, and great for dancing to.

The 2003 Metro 7" Edit of You Spin Me Round is included as well as it's video in an enhanced component. I am obsessed with this version of the song, and the video is the reason I decided to purchase this single. The video is also the reason for my four star rating - I can't stop watching it.

I'm a little disappointed that no other remixes of the song were included on this single. The Metro Remix was released with remixes in 2003, along with the "Evolution" greatest hits album - which included the original version of "You Spin Me Round."

I recommend this single if you're a casual Dead or Alive fan, and want to include this song in your library. Die hard collectors will want to include this in their collection, which I'm sure like mine, is clutterd with the other Spin Me re-releases.

4 out of 5 stars Cheer up Frank!.......2006-06-17

As Frank's fans know, you always give his songs the benefit of the doubt: sometimes it takes many listenings before they manage to upset your preconceived notions. But even after performing the requisite due diligence on "Show Me Your Tears" don't feel bad if "Jaina Blues" still sets your teeth on edge.

Even if this album doesn't generate the quality adrenaline of some of his earlier work, it has an immediacy and pleasant ambience. One is tempted to say he's mellowing as he gets older and to accept with an open mind this new twist in the fascinating path Frank has blazed. Well, I've tried, and not having seen the light, have at least felt the warm glow of pathos. This feeling of a struggle to come to terms with a big inevitability: this near resignation is truly touching.

Saying that, though, doesn't forgive the album's faults which seem even more glaring in light of the terrific run of albums he's had. There was always an elusive logic behind the contortions Frank imposed on a song's structure. That logic feels more tenuous here, and in some songs he seems too tired to be bothered. There was also a kind of transcendence-through-hyperventilation singing style that marked some of his most uplifting work. He still deconstructs the phrasing skilfully and brings it up from his gut, but the light giddiness is missing. We are, consequently, not uplifted.

In all fairness, Frank doesn't seem to be trying to make a great album here. It feels more like a snapshot of his state of mind at the time, and as such it's brilliant. I only wish someone would cheer him up!

2 out of 5 stars Teenager was brilliant.......2005-10-12

Just because you start doing Neil Young inspired music doesn't make it mature or creative. I too miss Speedy Marie. Maybe I'm just old.

4 out of 5 stars seriously good song writing.......2004-12-17

Ive really hated most of Frank Black's solo stuff. I sold my first Frank Black album, I don't get the excitement over "Teenager of the Year" which just sounded like bad, generic college-radio music to me, though perhaps I'll give it another listen
That said, this is the only Frank Black solo album that I've liked well enough to play and replay. Here and there it reminds me of the Cramps and the songs sound influenced by Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, Neil Young, and Lou Reed (The Snake), while hanging on to some of Frank Black's signature elements (like the little "ahh ahh" chorus in "This Old Heartache" and the spacey guitars) This is much more serious song-writing than a lot of stuff that he's been putting out.

4 out of 5 stars Shine on you Crazy Pill.......2004-12-15

I think there is something to be said for Frank on his journey vs. Frank having reached his destination. I love the earliest Frank Black albums because he is searching high and low and the range shown on those albums is amazing. In subject, form and instrumentation they're a wild ride. Now we've settled in with Frank for a drink and a smoke and I think it's true...this bar, although well loved, can seem a bit overly familiar. I like it, but sometimes I really miss Speedy Marie.

5 out of 5 stars David, perhaps you ARE on crazy pills........2004-11-06

This review is only so I can respond to David J. Miller. David, you've got it all wrong (except the part about Black being the man).

You said: "If his name wasn't printed on the cover of the album and if frank black was never in the pixies people would not like this." This is not true. While I enjoy the pixies, I find their albums sophomoric, and a bit silly. Well produced? Yes, but still silly. This is one of the things I like about them, that they had the musical hubris of youth. But highly-produced does not equal well-rounded or well-thought out. And Teenager? I love Black as much as anyone, and there are many gems on teenager, but well thought out is not an adjective I'd use. Even he admits that. Can you listen to that album straight through without checking your watch?

The fact is, everything these days is well-produced. The fact that Black can come up with something that sounds so good without post-production is nothing short of incredible. THAT is why I listen.

Do I also listen because his name is on it? Yes, of course. Millions of singers have sung the same phrases like 'I love you' over the years. But some do it with more sincerity, or uniqueness, or something else that makes you choose them over someone else. I buy his records because I want to hear what he has to say. I don't agree with everything he does, but because of his integrity, I know that he is doing it because that's what he wants to do, not because that's what he thinks I want to hear.

That's why I'll buy any album he puts his name on. And even if I don't love it, I'll appreciate it.

I hope you reconsider. And BTW, I do love this album. :)

Dannii (Kylie's little sister) first recorded this song as "I begin to wonder"...then someone came and put the Dead or Alive track "You spin me round" beneath it - people liked it - the artist and DOA agreed and here it is: a fresh new version "I begin to spin me around". It fits together beautifully, is very dancey and catchey and works as a new invention of an older song. Both artists match together well too.
