As a childbirth educator and founder of Hypnobabies, I love the beautiful relaxing melodies for both mothers and babies. I have given this Cd as a gift to help calm fussy newborns and soothe new mommies and it works like a charm! It is also wonderful for my pregnant Hypnobabies students, for relaxation and hypnosis practice and easing insomnia. I also have it playing daily in our office and everyone here is so relaxed, balanced and centered when it is playing. Creativity abounds! Keep making beautiful music, Maria!

I love the Angels of Venice, but this is not one of my favorite recordings by them. The music on this CD feels a little uneven; the lyrical beauty of pieces such as "China Moon" seem almost too melodic compared to more vocally twisting pieces like the rather eerie lullaby, "Nana." But eerie is very much the feeling that Carol Tatum seems to be focusing on: the sharp steely vocals on "Nana" seem to be the rule rather than the exception -- "Three Nightingales," and "Awake Inside a Dream" carry hallmark haunting voice and speech renditions.

"China Moon," "Lionheart," and "Chanter Mer" (also a vocal piece) are definitely the shining gems on this CD. The other pieces are all rather similar sounding, but still interesting, and worth a listen.

"Exotic" and "Poetic" are actually the two sections into which this CD is divided, and the wonderful arrangements therein for harp, flute and cello are just that. The "exotic" numbers are exciting and mysterious, while the poetic selections are simply lovely. The rich sound of these three instruments is wonderfully suited to such divergent styles, lending beauty and grace to all. Featured on this album are the original Angels: Carol Tatum on harp, Suzanne Teng on flute, and Peggy Baldwin on cello, with a host of guest artists rounding out the sound, including Greg Ellis on percussion and Azam Ali on vocals. Two of the "exotic" numbers and one from the "poetic" section were re-recorded for the group's Windam Hill debut, but the rest of the material is unique to this release. The duplicate pieces are some of the Angels' best, though, so they're certainly worth hearing again! The Angels first, mellower release is called "Music for Flute, Harp and Cello". Flutist Suzanne Teng went on to release a CD of her own, "Mystic Journey", and Carol Tatum recently put out her own album, "Music for Harp". All are dreamy, lyrical and nothing short of intoxicating. Those who enjoy the Angels' innovative work might also appreciate that of Nana Simopolous in her releases "Daughters of the Sun" and "After the Moon".

Carol has performed in our area several times. I acquired three of her CD's and I just love them. You need to be in certain pensive mood to fully appreciate this wonderful music. Otherwise, just listen to pop, rock or country. Her music is magical, simple yet profound, relaxing yet compelling and inspiring. I would highly recommend any of her albums. Her latest - just her on harp with her keyboards added later - is delightful.

With all due respect to the previous reviewer, the music on "Awake..." isn't anywhere CLOSE to "new age" music- not even a distant eighth cousin. I'm not sure what was meant by the "sound" effects being "shonky" but, to MY ears, the effects subtly enhance the many varying moods of the music on this recording. Head Angel Carol Tatum (who also happens to be one of the best arrangers around) keeps the music from "wilting" VERY effectively- it's more of a slow, sweet simmer. The harp, flute, and cello staple of the Angel's sound is enhanced, but not overwhelmed, by percussion, voice, and spare sounding synths. It's a musically brave excursion, one that reveals it's wonders with repeated listens.

    Carl Saunders did not pioneer soloing from a lead trumpet point of view: Marvin Stamm, Doc, Maynard, Shew: so many have pulled it off that it's not surprising to hear it anymore. Many lead charts written for bands now have chord progressions right there in the 1st chair a la Gordon Goodwin. But when a set of jazz chops like Carl's meets lead chops like Carl's, well, you have me stumped for words. "Spectacular" doesn't quite cut it; he doesn't blow the house down. "Out of sight" isn't right either; Carl stays pretty much within the boundaries of the chords. It's really what he does with all those 12 notes.

    "Intelligent, technically confident and preternaturally clever with a Mariah Carey range that only quits once he leaves the building, and even then I'd bet he pops high 'A's' in his sleep." I'll leave it at that. Why more folks don't have this guy on the top of their CD pile is nuts. Listen and learn. The Arban Cowboy, indeed!

    Endearingly known to his friends as the Arban Cowboy, Carl is the greatest! I have all his CD's and look for him on other artists' recordings as well. He's ALWAYS the one to check out. Not to be overlooked - ever.

    Trumpeter Carl Saunders has been a first-call player for West Coast big bands for many years, but he only started to record as a leader in the mid-1990s. This disc is his first crack at leading his own big band, & it is, as you'd expect, a superb disc. Saunders has stunning chops & imagination on the horn--he likes wide intervals & can hit high notes with a nice tone & pitch (rather than making them sound like sirens going off). But he's not a prima donna: in fact, the album is largely a tribute to the work of the late arranger/composer/trumpeter Herb Phillips: the album includes six of his charts, including the knockout opener "Compilation" (a brisk "I Got Rhythm" variant) and the lovely "An Apple for Christa" (a tribute to the ill-fated teacher/astronaut Christa McAuliffe). The rest of the charts are shared out among various hands--Ivan Lins, Bill Rogers, Jackson Stock, John Boice, Mike Barone--& they all sound excellent: always warm rather than blaring, & never settling for slick riffing or excessive cleverness (though perhaps the multiple key-changes on "I'm All for You" are pushing it...). Saunders doesn't hog the limelight--in fact, on a few tunes he doesn't solo at all (Johnny Mandel's "Emily" is a trombone feature for Andy Martin, for instance). Pianist Christian Jacob sounds especially strong on his two features; my only quibble would be that the usually reliable alto saxophonist Lanny Morgan seems rather one-dimensional here, relying on the same formulaic Bird lick over & over again. But otherwise this is a very fine disc, recommended to fans of mainstream big-band music or to anyone looking for some first-rate trumpet.

    Carl Saunders has gathered together the leading West Coast musicians and arrangers and recording technicians...AT THE PEAK OF THEIR POWERS...and created what will surely be a landmark "Big Band" recording. If you like flawless musicianship, this one's for you!

    If you are a jazz fan, if you appreciate the sound of a band comprised of some of the west coast's best players, if well-crafted, swinging arrangements are your cup of tea, if you are a trumpet player and want to feel totally inadequate, then you must get this CD! It is big band jazz as good as any you can hear. And the virtuousity of Carl Saunders is extraordinary! He possesses a beautiful sound, a very personal creative style, remarkable technical facility and a range that almost defies description! He can play lead, he solos imaginatively and I wouldn't be surprised if he can leap tall buildings in a single bound! The band members are the who's-who of west coast artists and they play like they play together all the time....which, of course, they do....in various settings. My highest personal recommendation on this recording!!

          I have all of Calobo's studio albums but am just now getting David Andrews' solo work. This EP is actually from 1996, while Calobo was still together, and features Andrews' trademark guitar melodies and vocal harmonies. Warm, engaging and intimate songwriting, mostly mid-tempo, but very satisfying. Recommended.

          I've had this cd for over a decade and have never grown tired of it. Although this cd can be played and appreciated at anytime I appreciate it most when I'm dealing with hardship. "Victory", "Highly Recommended", "There's No Greater Love", and "Lifting Up The Name Of Jesus" are songs that help me really focus on God and not life's difficulties. Not always an easy task but one somehow made easier by Helen Baylor's efforts. Those familiar with Helen Baylor's past know that she is not just singing to hear herself or make money, she is sharing with others what God has done for her. In doing this she not only acknowledges God for guiding her through life's rough times, she and God have transformed her rough times into something positive for Helen and others. I will be forever grateful to Helen Baylor and God for this cd.

          When I first heard this tape it was about 6 years ago. The song "Fear Not My Child", was the song that inspired me to continue my walk with the Lord. He promise me that he would be with me and love me no matter what. Every time I hear the song "Thank You Jesus",it reminds me to give "THANKS TO GOD ALMIGHTY" for all the wonderful and great things he has done in my life and the lives of my family. I Highly Recommend this cd/tape to all who need some inspiration and reminder that GOD is always there for you and with you..........LOVE IN CHRIST TERESA........

          The first time I heard this CD many years ago, I was a teen who had experienced many trials. As we all become adults we need to hear those inspiring words that come through so clearly on this CD. I was moved and I continued to play the cassete that I had until I wore it out. I have been searching for the CD for a long time now and I've benn recommending it to many of my friends. It is a contemporary gospel sound with traditional words of wisdom. I some glad that now I now my struggles are just a "Temporary Pain".
