Edwin McCain landed a major-label contract on the strength of his sets opening shows for his old South Carolina buddies, Hootie and the Blowfish. McCain's major-label debut, 1995's Honor Among Thieves, featured a duet with Hootie's Darius Rucker, and closely resembled the Blowfish formula of earnest soul vocals over acoustic-led folk-rock. On the followup, Misguided Roses, McCain tries to put some distance between himself and his famous mentors by adopting a fuller, more amplified pop-rock sound. It's an approach that shows off McCain's handsome tenor and his knack for writing catchy choruses, even if it does nothing for his melodramatic lyrics.

Recorded in Nashville with session vets Matt Rollings and Kenny Greenberg producing, Misguided Roses gains its full textures from the tightly packed layers of guitars and keyboards. If these mid-'70s, Southern-California arrangements remind one of the second-generation Doobie Brothers, you won't be surprised to find Michael McDonald matching his grainy, blue-eyed soul voice with McCain's on two numbers. And when McCain comes up with a Top-40-radio hook as effective as those on "I'll Be," "Darwin's Children," and "Holy City," you might find yourself wishing you didn't understand English so you could enjoy the music without hearing lines as stilted as "Emeralds from mountains thrust towards the sky." --Geoffrey Himes

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful lyrics and great music.......2007-02-07

Ediwn McCain is a great songwriter, and he has the voice and the band to back it up.

One of my favorite lines from any of his songs is from "I'll Be":

"The strands in your eyes that color them wonderful stop me and steal my breath. Like emeralds from mountains, thrust towards the sky, never revealing their depths."

Edwin McCain is a very underappreciated artist. I don't understand why he isn't more popular. Maybe he is too hard to pigeonhole. He's not just folk. He's not just blues. He's not just soul. He's not just rock. He's not just pop. He's all of these things in a perfect blend. Whatever you want to call him, he's worth a listen if you like mature music with a cohesive range of styles and moods.

If you like this album, I would also highly recommend his album "Honor Among Thieves".

5 out of 5 stars Edwin McCain = Amazing Music.......2006-03-13

If it has the name Edwin McCain on it, trust me its a great product to buy. The songs he writes are heart felt and true to every drop of ink used to write them with..

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums.......2006-01-27

I fried this sucker in the first few months I owned it. Had to buy another copy.

Edwin McCain is a storyteller. You can close your eyes and see what he sees. Holy City transports you to this beautiful place, haunting and mysterious yet in your back yard.

This is not a cookie cutter album either. The tracks are diverse and at times eclectic, which I love. A lot of times the entire CD sounds like the song playing on the radio SO WHAT'S THE POINT IN BUYING THE WHOLE THING? Not this time.

This is one of my all-time favs. I go back to it time and time again.

4 out of 5 stars Edwin McCain...the "unknown".......2004-07-03

I had never heard of Edwin McCain until I heard the song "I'll Be" on the radio a little while ago. I fell in love with it and would sing it throughout the day. Still though, I didn't know who was the brilliant singer. It wasn't until I saw the soundtrack for "A Cinderella Story" that I finally found out who sang this! I HAD to have the CD! I must say, although my favorite song is still probably "I'll Be", I love all of the songs on this CD. (Now I have more songs to sing throughout the day!!) Each song is different--and beautiful--in its own way. If you like "I'll Be", I'm sure you'll like the CD!

4 out of 5 stars Strong Performance.......2004-03-04

Edwin McCain stepped up the acoustic rock formula for his "Misguided Roses" album, provide a soul-filled album that stands out. His songs are more than just lyrics, but are more stories set to music. The band provides a great vehicle to carry the songs. With Larry Chaney playing lead, Dave Harrison on drums, Craig Shields picking up everything else from horns to keyboards, and Scott Bannevich on the bottom provide the upbeat music on this release.

The album begins in a great groove with "See the Sky Again" with a great opening riff from Chaney shortly followed by McCain's gruff voice. Chaney and McCain play off of each other well with vocals and guitar, and acoustic and electric guitars, building to a powerful end. Another great tune is "Cleveland Park" a much more laid back song relying on arpeggio chords from the acoustic guitar double with a strummed rhythm. "I'll Be" is the ballad of the album, and McCain croons well. "How Strange It Seems" has a good baseline from Bannevich, and a bluesy feel from Chaney. The same formula works again on "Darwin's Children", but I like McCain's voice better here, plus there's a good sax work from Shields here as well. Add in the cover of James Taylor's "(I've Got to) Stop Thinkin' `Bout That" and you have a pretty good album here.

McCain and crew have a lot of talent, and lay down some great music. I think McCain is one of the better bands in this genre of music, and they are fun to listen to. Definitely worth the price of the disk, and worth a listen.

Released during the era of leisure suits and pet rocks, the film Superman: The Movie has aged about as well. But the often-clumsy charms of Richard Donner's cartoonish, hit-and-miss take on the Man of Steel was blessed with at least one superlative artistic effort: John Williams's epic score. The composer's Oscar-nominated music (coming on the heels of Star Wars and Close Encounters) was a wall-to-wall heroic symphony, rife with memorable melodies and ominous arrangements. Almost every original cut on this soundtrack appears in an expanded version, supplemented by nearly a dozen previously unreleased cues and alternate takes. Featuring a deluxe slipcase and extensive, new liner notes, this is the definitive release of one of Maestro Williams's greatest scores. --Jerry McCulley

1 out of 5 stars Original 1978 Recording?.......2007-04-04

FIVE STAR FOR MUSIC. 1 STAR FOR AUDIO. Ok I've wanted this recording for almost 4 years. Now I got it. I am a discerning listener. This soundtrack is not the best quality. Tape hiss is very pronounced. You can tell it's taken directly from a cassette recording. I have other digital recordings of this music. They are miles ahead of this cd. Soundtrack is on the Rhino label. What? Rhino is not known for high fidelity. So it is very deceiving for one to buy a cd thinking it's John Williams conducting on a new recording in 1998 or whenever. It's the actual 1978 recording. Now let me unleash my rage. This thing sounds as if it's recorded with a single microphone in a bathroom, at a truck stop. Yes the music is phenomenal. My favorite track is #2 Krypton. I was hoping to discover some new hidden melodies that I've never heard in previous recording (original 1978). Nope. This IS the 1978 recording. So I will be getting the Debney recording just so I can hear what I'm missing. Love the music. Just can't hear it. ALL OF IT! But cool booklet. I can't listen to a booklet. But I got it. Whoopee.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME! John Williams shows again why he's the master of movie scores.......2006-08-31

After over a year of trying to find a seller of this fine soundtrack, I finally found it! It is high time that the full score was released on CD.
The original soundtrack release from 1978, while still an excellent collection, was sadly lacking in several of the best cues from the film. Most important of these was Track 12 (Disc 1) in which the helicopter crashes on the Daily Planet's roof and dangles precariously above the street. Williams builds on it, introducing Superman's theme into it as Clark Kent runs across the street, then rips open his shirt to reveal the 'S' - the symbol of the House of El - then enters the revolving door & exits as Superman. At the end of this is one of my favorite cues; the Superman theme is played as the Man of Steel appears above Metropolis, flying over the city on the hunt for criminals. 'Crime of the Century' (Track 6, Disc 2) was one of my favorite cues; this one portrayed the missile convoy as it made its way along the freeway, where Luthor staged the accident to get his cronies close enough to sabotage the missiles. There are too many new tracks to list here that should have been included the first time around, just a lack of space precluded this from happening.

5 out of 5 stars Is John Williams Superman???.......2006-08-20

After listening to the CD, John Williams must be Superman. By far, the greatest movie score ever written.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-08-10

Other than the over kill of "Can you read my mind", an excellent collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hector, about the liner notes..........2006-07-14

I have the previous edition, and the notes that came with it were nestled next to the CD in a thick booklet (with a cover of Reeve in front of an American flag) that was large enough for the slipcase cover, but too big to fit into the CD case front. Otherwise, the one-sheet cover that came with your soundtrack is identical to the slipcase version.

Its been along time since i've listen to this. The premier music services do not offer it for dowload, so i broke down and brought the album...Still sounds awesome. Klay Scott/Scot albert or whoever he is on this album, shows his uncanny ability to mix the most opposite of sounds to produce a very powerful mix. As you can imagine from the cd cover art (the term "dont judge a book by its cover" does not apply in this case) indicates that the overall feel is one of retribution and bitterness. If your not overly sensitive to this and love metal/industrial/samples, this cd is for you.

Album Description

After hearing the opening track on this new record, you will be hooked on the techno influenced pop sounds of the new Psyche. Endangered Species opens with "The Beyond", sure to be Psyche's new club hit. Techno smacks hard against Darrin's synergistic vocals; huge pounding percussion nails you up and down. This is club culture in huge doses -- try not to O.D.!

Features the hits "The Beyond" and "Damaged Soul" as well as favourties from their previous full-length, The Hiding Place ripped up and remixed. This special North American edition includes a free copy of Psyche's Misguided Angels, now out of print.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pure Trance.................................2002-07-23

Psyche has always stood out from other synth-pop bands due to Remi Szyska's unique style of synth that blends the traditional synth-pop sound with today's (dark techno and trance) and Darrin Huss's compelling vocals, which creates an atmosphere that is like no other and made for the dance floor.

This is really a remix album of (old and new) materials. The new songs like "the beyond", "damaged soul", and "memento" are definitely hits. The remixes will blow your mind and rejuvenate your soul by their high level of potency and will make you dance from beginning to the end.

5 out of 5 stars A great Remix Album.......2002-07-01

Psyche has done it again! This is a great collection of remixed songs from their masterpiece "The Hiding Place" and earlier albums. Watch out for the beautifully constructed "Damaged Soul (Extended Club Mix)." A must for any Psyche fan or anyone interested in cool, energy-driven and original synthpop.

5 out of 5 stars mindblowing.......2006-10-28

I had this CD several years ago, until some poorly endowed schmo broke into my car and stole it (along with my stereo and about 20 other CDs). Enough of the sob story; ever since that time I've been hunting the stores and hoping to find another copy. I ordered one through amazon from an independent seller by the name of "Topmusic", and he sent me a reissue (after promising me the original R.E.X. version) that had silence breaks between all of the tracks. Granted this is not the end of the world, but it does alter the effect of this work of art, not to mention the added disrespect of being lied to. He then proceeded to ignore about 15 of my most polite and professional e mails regarding the matter. (Insert maternal profanity here)

But enough about the perils of trusting independent sellers, Misguided is a once in a lifetime collection of raw anger, dark atmospheres, buzzsaw synth patches, pummeling drums and chunky guitar riffs. This album sits right up there with the best of them, and is worth the heavy price tag given the fact that it's near impossible to find, and I should know because I've been searching for about 10 years now. For fans of the "industrial" sound, metal, or just honest artistic expression presented in a seamless dreamlike manner, you owe it to yourself to check this album out. Just make sure you are getting the R.E.X. version for the full effect...

10 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Great band.......2004-10-04

First of all, I don't own this album (yet). Okay, I have heard a few songs off it, and I do own AP2, and various other Klay Scott and Celdweller works, so that gives me a right to say something. Okay, here's the news that no one has yet told you. Part of this band and AP2 is Mark Soloman. If that name doesn't mean anything to you, he is the lead sing of Stavesacre, a Christian artist that writes music that borders goth, hard rock, punk, and alternative (very unique,. but very good). He has a haunting voice, and when you couple that with Scott Klaytons genious in writing you end up with a mindblowing band. By the way, buying this cd WILL make you want to throw a louder stereo system in your car. Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars The album represents a critical piece of scene history..........2003-03-03

Take yourself to a time in your life when everything came together, when for a single day, for a brief snapshot of your life, everything fell in line just for you. The concept that was Argyle Park is that moment in the history of Christian Industrial. For one brief moment in 1994, a who's who of a small, emerging niche scene got together to conceive what might be considered by some as the best electronic industrial to stand the test of time.

More of a consortium than a band, Argyle Park was in itself a concept that joined together to create a concept album. The roster of VIPs included members from bands such as Circle Of Dust, Klank, Chatterbox, Prong, Feotus, EDL, and Mortal. The influence of each artist can be heard in this association of perfection, with a major influence and primary production credit coming from Circle Of Dust front man Klay (AKA Scott Albert) under his pseudonym and current band name Celldweller. The album represents a critical piece of scene history, with it's release prior to, and perhaps contributing to, certain contributor's declaration of disassociation with the "Christian artist" label and associated implied stigma.

The message throughout the album is as heavy as the music. While the cliché is often abused, it is apparent that the material was ahead of its time. The songs express the complete range of what can be perceived as negative emotions, including hate, violence, anger, doubt, and violence.

The release was more than much of the "Christian" music industry could bare, as they tried to apply an "Amy Grant" silver lining to every fuzzed-out riff and distorted vocal. Indeed, much of the animosity on Misguided can be interpreted as directed towards the church, or those in the Christian faith. No punches are pulled as song after song takes lyrical stabs at hypocrisy. The release was in a no-win situation, with fans of the scene liking the music but distrusting the lyrics, and those who would embrace the music at face value shying away from the Christian label.

Part of the appeal of the album is its implied intimacy. The album is very personal, with the songs coming across as directed at a specific individual from a first person perspective. From "You make me Violent" to "You never showed me what I would face out there", the album is a balm for anyone who has been hurt through the actions of someone else. For those who could relate, the album is a welcome relief. For those who couldn't (which were perhaps some of who the album was directed at), it could be seen as a threat.

While the content and their implications are worth noting, the impact of the lyrics stand out on the album due to the exceptional quality of the music. The 18 tracks flow together seamlessly. A few tracks become favorites, but it's like singling out a specific brush stroke on a painting masterpiece. It's beautiful on its own, but experienced as part of the whole, its fantastic. The opening spoken word track sets the stage, and from there it's a wild ride filled with the crunch of guitars spread over and under layers of hard synth, samples and electronics. Beyond the first actual 18 tracks, track 26 contains what sounds like a conceptual studio discussion pertaining to the awesome techno/industrial 'Skin Shed' tracks, track 29 has some guy doing a poor job of singing a low quality version of T. Rex's 'Bang A Gong', and track 34 closes the album in similar fusion to the opening with a fuzzed out spoke word warning.

After all this praise for the album, you want it, right? Good luck. Your only hope is the second hand stores such as radrockers.com or ebay. Either way, expect to be shy no less than $50US. Having paid the bean, I will attest to the value. Argyle Park is the sum of all its parts. It is Klank. It is Circle of Dust. It is early Mortal. It was... Argyle Park. It will be missed.
