Reach Out And Order A Copy.......2007-03-01
This is one of those albums you'll be listening to 20 years from now. It's that good! The breadth of talent displayed by the Cox Family is a rarity. The sweet infectious vocals on the swinging gospel opener hooked me instantly when I first heard this release 14 years ago. Every selection is a keeper. You won't be skipping over any tracks on this cd. It's a classic!
A FINE SELECTION........2006-03-31
A fine selection of songs, impeccably performed by possibly the most talented family in Country music.
There's a bit of everything on offer - old-time country (Little white-washed chimney), gospel (When God dips his pen & Standing by the bedside), plus 4 originals by vocalist/guitarist Sidney Cox.
Of these, one - Backroads - is, to my mind, the finest Country song to emerge in the last 20 years. I'm not aware of any major artriste picking up on it, which I find baffling - it's superb!
This group is justifiably held in high regard by those in the know. Long may they continue to seve up albums of this calibre.
Alison Krauss proudly presents: The Cox Family!.......2004-06-27
There are many "musical families" in the old-timey genre, and the best ones have a musician who really shines. The Cox Family is a family group with SEVERAL "stars". In particular brother and sister Sidney and Suzanne Cox have pleasant, yearning, soulful voices. Suzanne may be the closest thing in Bluegrass to Alison Krauss. And speaking of Alison - she orchestrated this recording, the Cox's debut on Ms. Krauss' Rounder label. Sidney has a great voice, but perhaps his greatest talent is as a songwriter, as Alison had already recorded several of his tunes including "I've Got That Old Feeling", which the Cox Family redoes here with Sidney singing lead and Suzanne and Alison providing heavenly harmony for on the choruses.
All of the numbers here make their mark, from the opening "Standing by the Bedside of a Neighbor" to the final ballad "Backroads". Alison lends not only her fine voice and ear, but also her bandmates at the time, and if there is a limitation to this recording it is that The Cox Family had a heck of a time in concert thereafter re-creating the instrumental tracks that were laid down by Union Station Wizards Adam Steffey, Ron Block, etc.
More "country" and less pop-sounding than Alison's own recordings, The Cox Family are simply a treat to listen to. No coincidence that they were asked to participate on the soundtrack for "O Brother, Where Art Thou"? (That's the Cox Family performing at the political rally while Holly Hunter is in the Woolworth arguing with George Clooney.)
One of the best modern bluegrass bands........2003-04-11
Slick as they are, the Coxes are also quite soulful. This is a nice, solid set of country-drenched bluegrass vocal tunes, with a harmony style reminiscent of the Dolly Parton/Emmylou Harris/Linda Ronstadt "Trio" albums. Great song selection, a nice mix of sacred and secular material, several oldies by folks such as Bill Clifton, Jim & Jesse, and fine originals written by Sidney and Suzanne Cox. Recommended!
Cox Family Crosses Over.......2000-01-05
With "Everybody's Reaching Out For Someone" the Cox Family not only states the obvious but turns it into a beautiful theme explored through tracks that cover the range from pure-hick bluegrass to countryish ballads. Featuring clean vocal harmony and accomplished instrumental work, the star of the album is how the Cox Family brings it all together, not just in their conciseness of arrangements, but in their ability to make country and bluegrass accessible to more general listeners. "I've got that old feeling" has all the changeups of mellow bluegrass with enough hooks to catch the most burnt-out pop listener and take him for a delightful ride.

Customer Reviews:
The first three episodes of "Star Trek: The Next Generation".......2006-02-23
"Encounter at Farpoint" (Written by D.C. Fontana and Gene Roddenberry, First aired September 28, 1987) was the two-hour pilot "movie" that introduced us to the new crew of the new starship "Enterprise-D" as they come together for the first time on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." The initial mission for the Galaxy-class starship is to check out Farpoint Station, which has been created on Deneb IV. Captain Jean-Luc Picard is not only trying to negotiate an agreement for Starfleet to use the station, but to try and learn how the Bandi built something that is clearly beyond their technological capabilities. But before they even get to the station, the "Enterprise" runs into Q, a mysterious and powerful being who puts the crew on trial for the sins of humanity. If Picard cannot convince Q to overturn the verdict, the crew will die (Warp 4).
In the second "part" of the story, the mission to Farpoint will be Picard's opportunity to prove the worth of humanity, but Q gives him only 24 hours to make his case. At Farpoint, Picard meets his new first officer and the rest of his crew, and on the planet's surface is surprised to discover that your wishes come true. Then a strange "ship" appears and starts blasting the Bandi city. You all know how small the Star Trek universe really is, so everything ends up being related and the "Enterprise" passes this initial test, because there are more episodes to come after this one (Warp 4.5).
In terms of the plot lines the first encounter with Q is of much more importance than solving the mystery of Farpoint Station. Little did we know that the trial would become the bookends for the series, but then I am betting that the creators did not know that either as the beginning. There is also a delightful cameo by DeForrest Kelly and the infamous "Imzadi" mental exchange between Riker and Troi that the producers quickly regretted (although eventually it would give us the best STNG book of the same title by Peter David). However, the masterstroke was the creation of Jean-Luc Picard and the casting of Patrick Stewart. Face it, one look at Picard and you know he is not Jim Kirk, but as soon as you hear that voice you just do not care.
An incredibly bad choice as the first episode to follow the two-part pilot, "The Naked Now" parallels "The Naked Time" episode from the original series. The key difference is that we had a much more solid understand of the characters on Star Trek before we watched them be stripped of their facades. The scene where Spock weeps for his parents and Kirk talks of his love for the Enterprise are emotionally significant because they have been set up by our complete understanding of these two characters. In "The Naked Now" the crew of this new Enterprise are still character types more than fully realized characters.
Consequently, this particular episode makes more sense out of context, if you fill in all that you learn about the characters in the years to come. But even from that perspective this a very shallow exploration of Picard and the others and just not worth the effort. "The Naked Now" continues some of the character and relationship exposition from the pilot, providing our first real proof of boy genius Wesley Crusher and the first hint of any feelings between Captain Picard and Doctor Crusher. The toss off scene of Tasha seducing Data does become poignant following her death, but right now it is just a joke (Warp 3).
I remember when I first watched this episode thinking it was not a good sign that the producers were already trying to rip-off the original Trek. When you watch the first season it becomes pretty clear that was exactly what they were trying to do with the vast majority of episodes. However, this particular episode represents the absolutely worst way to do so. The best, of course, would be the Deep Space Nine episode that blends so seemlessly with "The Trouble With Tribbles."
"Encounter at Farpoint" is worth a second look just to see how they laid the foundation for what was to come and even, in the show's second season, kicked it into warp drive. I still remember people actually gathering at my house to watch the first new "Star Trek" episode in two decades. As much as we cherish the original series because it gave us something so different from what we had to endure before in terms of science fiction on television, "Star Trek: The Next Generation" is really the flagship series in the franchise.

This cd is very good. It contains music from the pilot episode of Star Trek- The Next Generation, including the theme song. The music is very clear, without a lot of backround noise. It has provided many hours of enjoyable listening. I would recmmend this cd for all Star Trek fans. Also, check out the collection of Star Wars cds. They are really good too!

Great Early Green Recording on the Jazztime Label ! ! !.......2001-02-28
The story behind this session, as explained in the liner notes, is that drummer Dave Bailey, one of the first cats to dig Grant Green when he came to NY rang up Grant when he was asked to put this date together for the Jazztime label in NYC. In return, Grant returned the favor a few weeks later by pulling in Bailey plus bassist Ben Tucker for a Blue Note session a few weeks later. (The year is 1961.)
Featuring tenor saxophonist Frank Haynes, Green fans might be disappointed in that he doesn't play as much as they probably would have liked him to... however, don't let this dissuade you from getting it... his solo on Baby, You Should Know It should be studied and memorized by every Jazz guitarist and Jazz afficianado anyway ! ! ! Haynes' was another underappreciated musical genius equal to Grant. His clear tone, nicely swinging bop sensibility yet bluesy and aritculate phrasing make this CD a brilliant treat.... and yet another treat is the presence of Billy Gardner on piano (
<-- on my Amazon list I accidentally slipped and said he's playing organ, sorry folks !) Blue Note afficainados will recognize Billy as the "obscure" John Patton / Larry Young type organist who pops up on a number of rare Blue Note LPs, including as a side man to Lou Donaldson and on the recently re-issued George Braithe (complete sessions.) The late great Billy Gardner both as a pianist and an organist was another charactor best described as unique and underappreciated. Between him, Tucker and Bailey its easy to get lost in the groove.
To sum it up... incredible session... type you expect to hear on WBGO driving down the highway late at night... not as much Green as you might have expected but a swinging and SOULFULLY delightful session !

Album Description
Join the New Positive Wave, Spread the Word, by "Reaching Out" is the fast growing slogan for this current release of "Positive Country" by singer, songwriter, musician, recording artist Nikki Hornsby. The instrumentation is country but the message is one of Faith. The first release "The Power of the Lord" was written to be easily adapted to choir groups or individuals to sing along, plus the instrumentation can easily be changed to piano, keyboard, woodwinds or even brass. For the younger listener "Draw the Line" tells it like it is and what should be done about it.
Even the artwork on the CD Cover relates to "This River Bends" which is a waltz that reminds the listener tenderly about the source & life. Then the entire world needs to hear "My God Is Your God" but many may find its message controversial and therefore becomes appealing to others. So Join the New Positive Wave, Spread the Word, by "Reaching Out!" Marty Rifkin who did the instrumentation on this CD & he worked on Jewel's Platiumn CD plus sessions even w/ the Boss. Nikki & Marty have done a great job here based on the reviews of different purchasers, online commercial radio, & other sources which should continue in a more positive wave through the year.
