Wow! I didn't realize they were "christian"?!.......2006-05-05
Cool! I just finish watching VH1 top 40 Metal Songs and aside from reminising about having listened to Black Sabbath continually back in the early 70's while in Jr. Hi. and telling the family that I like the hard hitting energy of Metal Rock, but I wish they could lay off the satanic, violent, lyrics. I decided to check out Amazon.com samplings of groups like System of a Down and Linkin Park... thinking how I wish I could find my CD of a group that got lots of favored listening time a few years back... Hmmm, For Love Not Lisa... Let's check out getting more of that! Wow! What a great discovery to find out they are considered "christian"... I never recall noticing any "Jesus" heavy lyrics (which is what I dislike about most "christian" music too). Based on my ignorant enjoyment of this music, I would recommend it to anyone who likes loud, energetic, heavy electric music without the intense, immature, negativity and evil references. I am going to get the other two CD now that I know!
Don't be put off by the Christian thing--this is a great CD.......2004-06-22
I'm far from being a fan of Christian music, and I love this CD (and Merge and The Lost Elephant). I didn't think the lyrics were that in-your-face Christian. Admittedly, I've not read the lyrics, and I'm embarrassed to say that I've caught only bits and pieces of the lyrics. I listen to a lot of stuff like Iron Maiden and Iced Earth, so I'm not totally unused to listening for lyrics, but I've never really gotten a good handle on the FLNL lyrics.
I didn't even realize that they were a Christian band until I started reading reviews. I probably wouldn't have given them a chance if I'd known, but it's too late now. They're much more than a Nirvana clone--I've gotten a lot more play time out of the FLNL CDs than Nirvana's.
There's a great mix of high energy and emotion throughout. The vocals are excellent--ranging from soft and melodic, to raw shouting. The songs are not simple, linear pieces, but contain multiple aspects/melodies separated by bridges, sometimes yielding an oddly disjointed sound (in a good, creative way). There's a lot of interesting sound packed in each track--distortion and unusual guitar work adding to the energy of the piece.
Religious garbage.......2004-02-18
Unless you're in dire spiritual need. Do not even think for a second of buying this junk. There is in fact a reason these cd's are so cheap 2nd hand . . . It's all "Jesus loves you" in a new grungy-sounding package. Nice try. But no thanks. If I'd want that I'd go to church.
Still remember the first time I saw them live...............2002-10-29
I never ever heard this band in my life. Till one cold winter day at a College pub, this band was playing to a packed house of 100. That day still lives in my memory as vivid today. They were, to say the least, TIGHT, punching, the Raw energy they emitted was surreal. There are several tracks on here that just make you want to start moshing uncontrollably Track 11 most notably for me. The key is they start off soft, then get really heavy, so listen all the way through and you'll see what I mean. And yet for a hardcore band, they still manage to pull of sadder, introspective lyrics on others ie: Fathers and Songs... I got the rare opportunity to meet the band afterwards, and they were some of the most down-to-earth people ever. And after working in the music industry myself for years now, I've worked with everybody from Creed to McCartney. And this band is right up there with the legends. Sometimes the best things in life are kept secret. And if you judge your music choices by the latest single on the radio, you'll never know of hidden masterpieces like this one. Well this one's out of the bag. Do yourself a favor and own a piece of one of the most hard charging, emotionally driven albums you will probably ever hear for this genre' of music.
From a FLNL fan.......2000-01-30
It is hard for me to say this, being I am a HUGE FLNL fan, but this album (by far) is their worst. It doesn't have the edge that Merge had, and you can tell the band was having problems when they put this one together. It sounds rushed, and the originality and feeling the first album had is not found here. Still, it's an ok album, but for the first time FLNL seeker... buy Merge. Their latest album (Eliphants) is a return to their former glory.
