5 out of 5 stars Well worth it.......2005-09-03

I love this album! I got a great deal on it - low price, great quality, fast delivery. Best investment I've made in a while!

4 out of 5 stars Definitely worth a listen..........2004-02-29

I am going to go against the grain and say that in my opinion, this CD is not quite as good as Mitch's self-titled debut. The sweeping production that made the debut album an incredible listening experience from start to finish has been somewhat lacking in Mitch's subsequent projects. (Maybe due to the absence of Rich Mullins?) In some places, the music here sounds overproduced, considering that Mitch's voice lends itself to a simple accompaniment. If you're only looking for one of Mitch's CD's, I recommend his first one; but if you buy this one, it should still be worth it, because there are some gems to be found here. The musical style (with a couple exceptions)is mostly in the realm of straight pop, partly acoustic, partly electric. There is enough variety to keep it interesting, but if Mitch wants to keep growing as a musician, he needs to diversify in the future. With each CD, Mitch McVicker resembles Rich Mullins less and less, but some common traits are still there. Mitch's songwriting approaches Rich's creativity, but there will never be another Rich Mullins. Still, McVicker does as well as anyone at carrying on Rich's legacy, while continuing to step out as an artist in his own right. Here's hoping Mitch's visibility increases with future releases.

5 out of 5 stars Well done Mitch.......2002-12-13

Mitch has developed into a great songwriter out of the shadow of Rich Mullins. His concerts are personal, a lot of fun, and sometimes even profound. This album captures some great songs with great arrangements. The background banjo provides a subtle but very nice touch to Take the Wheel and Stargazer. The strings enhance everything and send the music to a new level. The "Squeaky Cheese Curds from Wisconsin" line tells of how personally Mitch gets to know his fans and reveals the depths of his travels. The first seven songs run together very well. The whole album is definitely worth getting.

5 out of 5 stars Without Looking Down ~ Mitch McVicker ~ Top of the Chart.......2002-10-03

The project, very much anticipated, very much desired. How do you wait for something that you know will
come eventually, but you wanted yesterday? Anxious, nervous, excited. That describes how I felt about
getting my soul on this compilation of new songs. Mitch has a talent for navigating us through a wide
valley of emotions as he blends twelve songs into a collection. This collection Without Looking Down has
lyrics that are masterful, and beautifully textured with the Gospel and words from and to our Lord.

Those prolific lyrics are skillfully blended with superb melodies. Strikingly different then the first two solo
albums, in that these songs have already evolved to the next level of delivery. Not to take away from the
first two solo albums, because they truly are masterpieces of joy, waiting to be discovered by more of
God's children. Yet often Mitch will put a new spin on songs after he has recorded them. The results are
engaging, powerful and like a road the lyrics haven't ventured on. You crave a re-recording of some of
his songs to get both versions. This album, is like the second version already. They are developed,
moving, well paced and soul satisfying. At times the pace is elegant, at times it's playful, often it's
prayerful. Mitch writes the music, plays it in concerts and then puts it on an album. Quote from Mitch I go
out and I play for people and then I document the music later in an album. The mission of my ministry
would be to point people to Jesus.. and to expose them to the Kingdom of God through word and song and
through the life we live as we interact. I think we're foolish to think that we're an entertainer.. and I go no..
people don't come to Christian concerts to be merely entertained .. they come totally to take something else
away with them.. so it's a ministry whether you realize it or not.

Not holy Just Yet, and I need you Jesus were the only two songs I heard a first cut on. These two songs for
me were songs that I felt he truly had to share with others on an album. The version he chose to recorded
is amazing. Lyrics didn't chance, but the tempo and full band have brought them home.

Mitch's collection of songs recorded has grown to 39; too many to share at concerts. Picking the twelve
that made this album cut and would go into future concert rotation must be a challenge. I like it when
God challenges people. The twelve he picked to share at this time are exceptional.
Without Looking down is a joyful collection of songs to own. Every now and then a sparkle of brilliance is
revealed. This artist is one of those bright lights, a vehicle God shines through. This album is powerful
and very worthy addition to your music collection. Filled with soulful intensity and variety. Exemplary is
the ordinary for this artist's songwriting ability and Mitch delivers once again on this album just that. A
wide range of music that is filled with relevant psalms we can all use in our own walk with God to those
catchy and contagious entertaining soul dancing melodies that simply bring joy to our day. Fresh, clean,
insightful, fun, prayerful, joy, high energy, intimate, sharing, praise and thanksgiving. This album shows
those qualities along with his ever continuing maturing in Christ. Mitch is always searching to follow Him,
seeking God's will first, and then stepping out onto the path God says, this is the one to go on. Experience
part of the journey with him and share and support his ministry by ordering the music today!

    Product Description

Mitch McVicker, a wonderful friend and traveling partner of Rich Mullins, takes the lead part of St. Frank, a cowboy wandering around in Wichita, Kansas. Michael Tate from DC talk sings the part of Buzz, the poor Mississippi slave's son, who joins Frank on his journey. Kevin Smith, also from DC Talk, sings the part of Ivory, a washed out, bar playing piano man. Leigh Bingham-Nash of Sixpence None the Richer plays the part of Claire, which provides us with the human love story in the musical. She is a long-time buddy of Frank, but because of her deep love for him as well as God, she gives him up to do God's will. The story starts just after the Civil War. Frank has come back disillusioned with things he saw. This leads him to a point of recognition, a point where he finally feels the presence of God all around him. Being so moved by this, Frank begins to sing out in a song to God, "There You Are." Next, we are introduced to Buzz, Ivory, and Claire as we hear songs about them and how they view God as freedom, as escape, and as love respectively. The story progresses as we hear the song "Heaven is Waiting." We then discover that the three men are going on a journey not knowing where it will take them, only knowing that God is in it. Afterwards, we hear each of the four characters, this time as they show us how they view life. From Frank we learn to see things as he thinks angels would; Claire is looking forward to seeing Frank again in the song "Buenas Noches from Nacogdoches"; Ivory has fallen in love with a Navajo princess in the song "Love's as Strong"; and from Buzz we are led through stages of Jesus' death on the cross. The musical ends with poetic, heartfelt, strong images of the end of a journey. A journey that takes the characters in the story as well as the listeners to a point of complete praise of Jesus. The song is called "You Are All," and it talks about how Jesus is faith, hope, love, our most high, everything..... 10 Songs.

    5 out of 5 stars A Growing Process..........2001-07-25

I first heard Mitch live a few years ago, and am constantly impressed with his use of meaningful lyrics. I own both this cd and his previous one. This cd is a great musical reflection of Mitch's growth process both as a performer and an individual. On this cd, he continues his use of lyrics which speak to the listener's heart. This cd also showcases the development of his unique style. He has been compared to Rich Mullins, as well he should be, for the influences are there. However, on this cd, Mitch is proving that while Rich was and is a great influence on him, he is his own artist with his own style. The musical sound on this cd is also a plus, with the unique sound of Mitch's voice added in with the hammer dahlsamer(not sure of the spelling on that!), and the variety of percussion used. If you like a positive message with thought provoking lyrics, check out this cd.

3 out of 5 stars Midwestern acoustic pop-rock from a friend of Rich Mullins.......2001-04-18

Mitch McVicker, the hard-working singer/songwriter with the folksy, Midwest acoustic sound, releases Chasing the Horizon, a collection of songs born of life experiences. Teaming with talented musicians such as Phil Madeira on keys, Rick Elias on guitars, and Steve Hindalong on percussion, producer and bassist Mark Robertson helps McVicker craft a project tailored to fans of light, guitar-based country-flavored tunes focused on heartfelt lyrics.

McVicker makes a tribute to the late Rich Mullins on "Rich's Song" complete with dulcimer licks. The whole album has a Mullins feel that will make the listener miss ol' Rich all over again. Other highlights on the CD are "Suits of Skin" and "Anything," a rolling tune that will make you feel like you're driving through the plains of America's heartland. The pithy lyric on "Anything" says:

I'll take the scraps that fall to the floor / 'Cause all the meals I fix for myself / Leave me wanting more

The remaining !songs are equally meaty. Stellar musicians offer solid performances, yet most of the songs don't have the "killer hook" that would otherwise make this a stellar project. No one can replace Rich Mullins, but Mitch McVicker continues the legacy of songwriting craftmanship Mullins left behind. Although it won't set the world on fire, Chasing the Horizon will satisfy fans who enjoy McVicker's laid back style and thoughtful lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars Most of you are missing a wonderful thing.......2005-10-26

I have listened to this over and over again and can't take it out of my car CD player. Mitch has a unique sound that is Rich Mullen-like, but he has many different sounds from pop to praise songs to folk. It is amazing. I saw him live twice and he puts on a fantastic show.

5 out of 5 stars Best kept secret in Christian music.......2004-02-29

I am pretty stingy with 5-star ratings, but I didn't give a second thought about this one. This whole CD is just an awesome listening experience from start to finish, and each song is memorable. Mitch's lyrics (sometimes co-writen by Rich Mullins) are always thought-provoking, and starkly honest. Rich Mullins left a very distinctive stamp on the production of this album- his death occurred in the final stages of producing it. So naturally out of all of Mitch's CD's to date, this one sounds the most Mullins-esque. That is not to say it is stuck in the shadow of Rich Mullins. Mitch makes each song his own with his distinctive vocals, unique observations, and a fresh folk-rock sound. To my ear, this is an all around better CD than either "Chasing the Horizon" or "W/out Looking Down". The production is just superb- again, likely because of the involvement of Rich. Mitch's more recent CDs have their share of great songs too, but if you are just introducing yourself to McVicker, this is the one to buy- no contest, at least not yet. We can only guess what Mitch will bring us in the future.

5 out of 5 stars WAY TO GO MITCH.......2003-01-02

This is a CD of a guy who has really grown in his relationship with the Lord & it shows. The songs are relevant in the message they covey & show the heart of a man who seeks hard after Christ. I love the "fun" songs on the CD as well as his more serious songs. "Only Love Will", & "Take Hold of Me" are my personal favorites. And I have to say that I can tell who his musical mentor was...you learned well from Rich, Mitch! Great work! This album is uniquely Mitch.

5 out of 5 stars Messenger of Peace.......2001-09-22

Mitch's music really speaks to me and I especaially like the song "Gospel Rain" I have seen Mitch in concert several times and he touches my heart everytime I see him. His music is excellent and has a very important message to send all of us. I recommend this CD to all. Also if you get a change you should see him in concert.

      5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2001-02-26

This one is a must have! Mitch follows in Rich's footsteps with wonderful melodies and outstanding lyrics. I can't wait for his next release.
