This 1996 collection of Rich Mullins's finest work is a must-have for any Christian-music fan. A quick glance at the song list will make one marvel over the significant influence this masterful songwriter has in the CCM world. "Sing Your Praise to the Lord," Mullins's first recorded work, helped launch Amy Grant's superstar career. "Awesome God" has become an anthem sung by youth in many churches in America. But let's not forget the plaintive "Calling Out Your Name" or "Hold Me Jesus," two oft-covered numbers that further testify to Mullins's genius. The praise-and-worship theme that flows throughout Songs aptly captures the sincere spirit of this well-missed man. --Michael Lyttle

Praise to the Lord.......2007-07-08
Rich Mullins was and still is a tremendously gifted song writer and singer. I recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys music that will bring them closer to Christ.
Songs: classic Rich Mullins.......2007-06-08
Rich Mullins was one of the best songwriters to bless Christian Music, and this represents some of his best work. If you are unfamiliar with the depth of his writing, you will be amazed at the honest appraisal of the human heart that he reveals.
"If I stand, let me stand on the promise that You will pull me through; and if I can't let me fall on the grace that first brought me to You."
Meets me where I am.......2007-02-25
I came late to Rich Mullins. Faced with a new commute-from-hell, I asked my priest for advice on music to help me. I'm in Human Resources and I hoped to find something to help deliver me at the other end with any desire to serve my fellow man/employee. On her recommendation, I looked Rich up and settled on "Songs" to start. I have since joined the chorus of those who claim him as the voice of a generation. From "we are not as strong as we think we are" to "Hold me Jesus", this man spoke for me and to me. "You can't see yet where it is you're heading but one day you'll see the face of love..." I was in a meeting recently where we were asked to identify our spiritual heroes. There are many, but at that time, the first one that came to mind for me was Rich Mullins. I explained, in my small group, that it was sad he had died so young, that it seemed impossible such a spirit could be silenced. One of our group, who had never heard of him, challenged me to remember that as long as his words live on through those of us who he spoke to, his spirit will live on. And to that (and this), I say Amen.
Best CD of all time.......2006-11-11
This has to be the best CD of all time. I listen to many different types of music, but this is the best CD I own. Rich really had a special gift with words and music. After completely using up two tapes, I finally bought a CD and keep it in my CD changer all the time. I have given this CD to several people as a gift and everyone loves it. Thanks Rich for a great collection of "Songs".
What a gift to leave us with!.......2006-10-21
This album stands alone in Contemporary Christian music. Whereas so much of CCM features "power vocal" songs with a bible verse or single observation as a hook and run-of-the-mill Nashville production, Rich digs deep. The lyrics run the gamut from the playful to the poetic to the profound to the deeply personal - this man did not simply parrot Christian platitudes; he REALLY "got it" and communicated it. And how he communicated it - his vocals have an earnestness and urgency that power vocalists can only wish for. The songwriting reflects a level of craft that is found almost nowhere else in popular music. His instrumental versatility (excellent on hammer dulcimer, very good on piano, solid on acoustic guitar and mandolin) give his music a range remiscent of Led Zeppelin and the Beatles. Although some find the studio versions of his music over-produced, I find them fresh and compelling. This CD is the best of the best from the very best that Contemporary Christian Music has to offer. Even when compared to pop musicians in general, these works stand up. As a pro in the business that knew him once told me, Rich was in a class all by himself.

You'd think the sting of Rich Mullins's untimely death would lessen with time, but the latest collection of works from this prophetic, insightful songwriting genius makes it hurt all the more. Listening to Songs 2 a 16-track sampling from the latter years in Mullins's career, one realizes that contemporary Christian music not only lost a great songwriting talent, it lost part of its soul in that tragic 1997 auto accident. There are so many good moments and memories on this release that it's difficult to single out a high point. Better perhaps to spotlight the different facets of Mullins and his fantastic colleagues, the Ragamuffin Band. "Hope to Carry On" and "Somewhere" carry the energy and zeal that was so much a part of Mullins's approach to music. Maybe ol' Rich captured his magic best in the track "Here in America" when he sings "There's so much beauty around us for just two eyes to see / But everywhere I go I'm looking." Indeed. Any fan of music, regardless of genre, should appreciate the muse, the honesty, and the urgency of Mullins on Songs 2. --Michael Lyttle
Customer Reviews:
More of Rich's Best.......2005-10-12
If the album "Songs" is a bouquet of flaming roses full of love and zeal for God, then "Songs 2" is a bundle of pure lilies, raw with the experience of God, intimate, personal, exploring.
If "Songs" reminds me of a pair of wings taking flight and soaring in the sky, then "Songs2" reminds a string of footprints, filled with struggles, tears, and His grace.
I love Rich Mullins' songs, although I would not qualify him as a professional singer, no, not at all. I would rather call him a prophet - biting and brutally honest, a poet - sensitive and uniquely expressive, and a musician - raw and soulful like the lungs that have just taken in a deep breath of Irish country air. Rich does not sing with a smooth vibrato, but with a vibrating soul and a beating heart. And the best (most important) part of this whole thing is: his songs bless. I am so repeatedly reminded of God's love, and challenged by his devotion that I can fall more in love with God and with Rich's songs at the same time. Don't misunderstand me: as Rich says, there are songs higher than he can sing. Nothing but His Word stands forever.
More of Mullins' best........2004-10-19
Rich Mullins is my favorite songwriter, Christian or secular, of all time. Released two years after his death, "Songs 2" contains more of Rich's greatest songs in the tradition of the first "Songs" release. Some of my favorites here include "Step By Step," "I See You," "Here In America," "Bound to Come Some Trouble" and "The Love of God." Other noteworthy songs include "I Will Sing," "Brother's Keeper," "Home" and "Peace." Rich Mullins was a songwriter who always sought not just to entertain us, but also to encourage and challenge us all in our daily walk with Christ. "Songs" & "Songs 2" are collections of some of his most encouraging and challenging songs.
The Greatest Writer in CCM.......2003-03-19
I prefer Songs (the first greatest hits), but that's not to say that this CD isn't as brilliant. Rich lived a life that mirrored his music. He wasn't in CCM for the money, unlike a lot of artists, and he didn't settle for sounding like everyone else or following the current trends in culture. He made music that was inspired by God, came from his heart, and went directly to Your own. It's a discredit to offer a review, when his music says it all. I miss him...
Wow- again!.......2002-12-07
This ties in with Songs 1 through the Step by Step refrain. Each song is full of the gospel's text, and filled with the gospel's Spirit. God truly blessed us with this man, and I get everything I can from his life and career.
Sequel almost as good as the first.......2002-09-21
Any fan knows that a greatest hits project never includes all of an artist's truly great songs. This is also the case with Rich Mullins. While his first best of, Songs, includes the cream of the crop, there were still many great songs omitted due to space.
This CD, released two years after his death, seeks to remedy the problem by including 16 more of his best songs. And some of the songs I missed from the first effort are here. "I See You," "Here in America," "Peace," and "Be with You" are examples of these songs. And I simply can't believe that "Growing Young" was overlooked the first time around. This powerful song of repentance is one of my favorites from Rich.
This CD doesn't inspire quite the same "must have" as the original did, however. Some of the songs, while still good, just aren't as classic the ones included on Songs.
Any fan of Rich Mullins, die-hard or casual, will want to get this to complete their collections. While not as good as the first, it's still a great collection that showcases Rich's wonderful work.

Absolute Greatest.......2007-06-20
This is an often played masterpiece at my house. It is simply wonderful. If you enjoy Celtic music, you'll love The Color Green. If you enjoy folk and pop, you'll love Here in America. Bottom line, you really will probably love all the songs on this album. Enjoy!
A Masterpiece..........2007-04-15
This CD has been one of my favorites for years. Seeing it again here on Amazon brought back so much emotion and admiration that I couldn't help but add to the existing reviews. Rich Mullins was a virtuoso, a Christian artist of depth and compassion beyond the scope of any of those who would attempt to be a peer of the peerless. His mark is as profound as that of any composer or poet ever known.
Unparalleled Lyricism.......2006-11-12
"A Liturgy, A Legacy, and A Ragamuffin Band" is an album unparalleled in allusion and lyricism. Its songs are threaded by the "American Dream," an umbrella term for dreams both broken and realized here in "the land of the free and the home of the brave." In particular, "Land of my Sojourn" is rich in double meanings, both of merit and noteworthy. Mullins incorporates many aspects of American culture, including Emma Lazarus's "The New Colossus," the Catholic creed, and holiday traditions as evidenced by "The Christmas Song". There are so many indelible lines (e.g., "There's so much beauty around us with just two eyes to see, but everywhere I go I'm looking.") If you skim the reviews for this album, you will find many individuals quoting and paraphrasing lyrics--that alone is a testament to the album's proverbial quality. This album reiterates the idea of profundity in simplicity. It is an extension of the inimitable and dynamic life of Rich Mullins.
Simply Amazing.......2006-11-05
I have many christian music CDs. This one is amazing. Rich Mullins pores his soul into his music. His band is not your usual band. You can tell that they are professional musicians, as they use their talent with some orchestral flare. It is a great loss to us that God called him home so early.
Rich's legacy is fully present in this fine album.......2005-09-15
Rich Mullins left a big hole in the Christian music world upon his death, but his legacy lives on in this wonderful album that beautifully illustrates Christ's relationship with the Church. His lyrics captivate your heart and mind and leave you meditating on the messages he so poetically express. All of the songs on the album are terrific, and my favorites are 'Creed', an unforgettable anthem for the Church today, 'Peace', a touching song that tells Christians to reach out and show Christ's love to people, and 'Hold Me Jesus', a reflective song on how we depend on Christ's love through times of fear and doubt. It's one of the most memorable Christian albums ever because of its passionate music and lyrics that will be relevant to the Church as long as music exists.

Mullins' best, IMO.......2007-01-14
Common wisdom has it that "A Liturgy, A Legacy & A Ragamuffin Band" is Mullins' masterpiece, and "The World as Best as I Remember It, Vol 1" is a slightly less great album that points to his magnum opus. I disagree. For one thing, an artist is capable of more than one masterpiece (see Dylan, Stones; or, among Christian artists, Larry Norman, Daniel Amos, Mark Heard)... Personally, I prefer this album over "A Liturgy" (which IMO has a great first half and some weaker songs on "side 2"). The AMG review states that it would have been better if, instead of releasing 2 volumes, the "best songs" from each would have been combided into one CD. I strongly disagree; there's not a weak song on Volume 1 (unlike Vol. 2), and holds together very well as a unified album (again, unlike vol 2). There's so much going on here: the beautiful, evocative piano melodies, the restless percussion work, the differing tonal colors of various acoustic instruments, the nice hybrid and melange of differing folk styles (African chorus, Celtic melodies, Appalachian folk, etc.). A beautiful album.
a rich masterpiece.......2005-12-17
This is what you get when you have brilliant songwriting along with passion and soul.Certainly Richs'best work and a contemporary Christian classic.Personal favorite:"Calling Out Your Name"Rich images with lovely hammer dulcimer from Mullins. Not a wasted note on the whole album.Essential stuff.
"In the west I see an evening".......2003-11-12
This veteran's day I listened again to this wonderful disc. I think especially on a day like today we can all learn a lesson and perhaps take a warning from Rich's words.
The song "The Howling" in particular speaks to where we, as Americans have been, are, and continue to go:
------------------------------------------
"I can see the iron horses' tracks
Pressed in the mud from the weight of all that steam and steel
But the wind don't blow where you want it to go
No, the wind just goes where it will and you follow
I can feel the breath of winter
Driving this snow across these newly-whited plains
Takes my breath from me and it leaves me falling
Then it picks me up again in its own strength
And I can hear the wild wind howling
And I can feel it in my bones
And I know that the howling will take me home
I can see some traveller's footprints
There's a little bit of blood in every step he made
I wonder what kind of burden he's bearing
That has cut him so deeply every step along the long, long way
In the west I see an evening
This scarlet thread stretched beneath the gathering dark
Red as the blood on the hands of the Savior
And rich as the mercy that flowed from His broken heart
And I can hear the wild wind howling
And I can feel it in my bones
And I know that the howling will take me home
These men of violence, they have made this a world full of wars
Oh God break Your silence and let Your justice shine forth
Show some mercy, Oh Lord
'Cause I can see a people dispossessed
Broken and brave in the face of so much fear
Driven from their homes by the greed of a nation
Whose treaties were as good as litter
Along the trail of their tears
I can see the Covenant colors
The sun and the rain have woven against the blue of the sky
And I know if we live we will live by His promise
I know He who made it and
I'm sure that He would not lie
And I can hear the wild wind howling
And I can feel it in my bones
And I know that the howling will take me home"
------------------------------------
The choice is ours.
The rest is silence.
Best Christian CD ever.......2003-07-15
This is referring to Both volumes 1 and 2. There are other amazing albums but in my opinion these 2 together create the best Christian music has to offer!!!
Amazing CD.......2003-02-04
I have been a Rich Mullins fan for years, and this is still my favorite CD. The passion mixed with the high view of God as creator and sustainer of His universe is fantastic. If you have never listened to Rich before, this CD is the place to start.

If I Could Only Have ONE Rich Mullins Album... This Would Be It.......2007-06-20
If I was stranded on a desert island (albeit, one with electricity, a TV and a DVD player) and could only choose 10 items, this would be one of them. I disagree with the reviewer who thinks this doesn't stand up to repeated viewing/listening. Both the CD and DVD in this set have been played often at my house. My only wish is that someone would unearth some other videos of Rich Mullins concerts to share with the world.
A Wonderfully Candid Listen.......2007-06-04
This two-disc set is a must-have for those who know and love Rich Mullins' music. As with everything this poetic, wise, and witty man of God ever did with his great gifts of lyrics and music, the songs on this CD and companion DVD lift up your mind and heart to the Lord without being cloying or preachy. An assemblage of taped excerpts from his concerts--in drafty, very real auditoriums, not elegant concert halls--the CD is the closest thing to a "live" album that Rich Mullins left us, but in a very real way, it is better than a live album. Not in terms of production, certainly; the sound quality is poor and you can hear members of the audience coughing away in some songs. But the music and patter with the audience is utterly real. In addition to freewheeling renditions of his songs (some versions of which sound better in all their raw glory here than they do on studio albums...check out "It Don't Do" and "Verge of a Miracle"), there are excerpts of his interactions with audiences, both touching and humorous. The DVD is an absolute gem; it includes a concert with his band that was taped in Indiana only six months before his death. The DVD also includes twelve brief segments of Rich commenting on living the spiritual life, but true to his style, in a way that is super-engaging and inspiring without being boring in the least. Our loss is heaven's gain, but Rich left us a lot of beautiful music, profound words, and the poetry of his lyrics to help guide us in our walks with the Lord. I give this two-disc set the highest recommendation.
"THE BIGGEST WEIRDO OF THEM ALL...".......2005-05-04
A good, good friend of mine sent me a copy of this wonderful CD/DVD collection. So before I give Here in America the most honest review I can muster, I must admit that: 1. My copy is a highly prized gift & 2. Rich Mullins is a hero of mine (see Rich's own definition of a hero on the DVD). That said, I honestly don't like much of the music on the CD (there are some blazing exceptions though)--but I LOVE the DVD!
The songs worth hearing on the CD are few, but deep in quality. The live versions of Hello Old Friends, What Trouble Are Giants? and None Are Stronger are all excellent. What Trouble Are Giants? has actually become my son's favorite song.
Yet that's not why we're here--is it? One gets the sense that the music was just a pretext for getting the DVD a wider audience. I'm glad they marketed it that way; I doubt I would have seen the DVD otherwise.
The DVD is top notch. We get an excellent live studio performance by Rich and the Ragamuffins. Added to that (and this is the real show-stopper for me) is the film of Rich and Beaker lecturing at the same place a few years earlier. Who knew Rich was such an awesome and insightful teacher?
I love his idea of the Bible being a book of stories about a bunch of weirdos and God being the biggest weirdo of them all--as Brennan Manning would say--"The Wild Man." This is teaching from a man who knew first-hand the reckless raging fury that they call the Love of God. Amen.
I'll stop babbling. It is time for you to get your own copy. You won't be disappointed.
I give Here in America a hearfelt recommendation.
The DVD alone makes this worth buying.......2004-10-21
Buy this CD/DVD if you want to watch Rich Mullins perform live. The songs on the CD are classic Mullins and inspire and entertain. All Mullins fans should have this CD/DVD in their collecton.
Don't buy this for the music . . ........2004-06-01
About the title of this review . . . it may seem a bit strange for me to reccomend that you not buy a CD or DVD of one of Christian music's top (if not the top) singer and songwriters for the music. However, the Here in America set is not really about the music, though there is plenty of music to enjoy. Indeed, there are a great number of Rich's greatest songs on the CD and (especially) the DVD for your listening pleasure, even a few rarities like Rich's demo on the CD for the song Debby Boone would eventually record, "O Come All Ye Faithful" (no, not the Christmas hymn). The DVD also features great renditions of Rich's top songs performed live with the Ragamuffin Band, refreshingly escaping the over-production most of them recieved on their recorded versions.
The highlights come not in the wonderful songs, though. Let's face it, all of the "live" songs on the CD itself were recorded on cassette tape and are of no better sound quality (actually sometimes worse) than the tape demos on the Jesus Record, though the handful of song demos on this CD are of good quality. No, the highlights come in-between the songs on the CD and DVD, when Rich Mullins shows us his heart and his uncanny, if simple, wisdom. From his sometimes quirky, sometimes heart-rending, and always thought-provoking anecdotes to his blunt, straight-to-the-punch one-liners and mini-sermons, this set shows us just what kind of prophet God sent us in the unlikely form of an unglamorized 80s-90s Christian pop icon. Of course, Rich was much different than the others in his genre. He made no secret of his many faults. He prefered to live on a very meager budget and help those in need than to make the possible millions he could have made off of his every hit record and over twenty chart-topping singles. He was not afraid, either, as this rare audio and video footage clearly shows, to express his opinion of any issue, sensitive or not, which he felt strongly about concerning God or the Church.
Rich Mullins was a great songwriter, and a person of unlikely wisdom and courage in a day and age where the truth of God is being constantly watered down by a much astray Church. Rich has inspired a legacy, though, and the spiritual seeds God planted through him now have made their way into the churches and into even the Christian music mainstream. If you want to see and hear a bit from the heart of Rich Mullins, I encourage you to get this CD and DVD set. You will be enlightened, inspired, maybe a little ruffled, but you will certainly not be disappointed.

Amazon.com essential recording
This double album contains two discs, ostensibly two versions of the same record. The first disc contains Mullins's crude demos of 9 of the 10 songs on the album, recorded on a battery-powered box only a few days before his untimely death. Even with the abundance of tape noise, pops, clicks, and bum notes, Mullins's skill as a performer and passion for this material shines clearly through. The second disc contains the same songs, fully produced by Rich's band, the Ragamuffins, with special guests Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Ashley Cleveland, and Phil Keaggy. These performances feel haunted as well, trying to be faithful to Mullins's vision as a performer and folk/ethnic musicologist without resorting to grave robbing. Pennywhistles, accordians, and upright bass strike a jagged edge against the polished sheen of orchestras and children's choirs. The guest vocalists make Mullins's songs their own, while the Ragamuffin-sung tunes naturally carry more of the spirit of his own recordings. --Brad S. Caviness

The Jesus Record.......2006-11-03
Arrived in good condition in a timely manner. I really enjoy a couple of the songs. There some songs I'm not really fond of. I wish I had been able to buy just one CD. It came with two that are exactly the same, except that one is a demo CD.
Great Worship CD!.......2006-03-11
Few come close to the lyrics of Rich Mullins! I enjoyed his side of the cd..even with the throwback cassette stopping noise. I was not at all impressed with the remakes by the newer generation. Rich Mullins truely was blessed with a gift for lyrics and music writing. We've been blessed to enjoy him.
Heart-wrenching and spiritually powerful.......2005-09-23
Being a big fan of Rich Mullins, and reading almost every article I can find on him, I went into this expecting big things. The last songs Rich every recorded, weeks before he died. After listening to the demo CD, this is the most powerful CD I have ever owned. Many songs sound like he knew his time was short on this earth. The stark compositions, either a single guitar or a piano, really bring to home the fact that Rich was pouring his heart into these songs. "Hard to Get" continues his unique way of relating to God. My heart cries everytime I listen to it. All of these songs seem to be praise songs, with "Jesus" being a particulary good one. I have not listened to the "cleaned up" version of this, but there's no need to. No other artist or way of recording could give this album more spiritual power.
missing Rich.......2004-05-04
Yes I realize people are going to jump all over me for giving this project less than five stars. What little disappointment I had was not due to the songs themselves. They demonstrate some of the finest work of Rich Mullins; thoughtful, profound, witty, and poetic all at once. I only wish (like everyone else) that Rich had been around to do a quality recording of them. Although the songwriting is undeniably Rich Mullins, the recording (on the disc with various artists) lacks the spark of musical genius we came to expect from Mullins. That shouldn't be a surprise of course, because there is no replacement for Rich and his talents. However, my impression was that the project didn't flow very well from start to finish; because there isn't really a dominant musical style, and because there is a different lead singer in almost every song. The common theme of Jesus Christ and Rich's lyrics hold it together somewhat, but the aura of Rich Mullins is noticeably absent. (It doesn't help that the hammer dulcimer is also absent, except for a few seconds at the end). I could speculate on how I think this record could have been produced better, but that wouldn't help anything. This is an incredibly moving project; I am only concentrating on the negative side because the other reviewers have covered the positive. Just don't be expecting to hear the final masterpiece of Rich Mullins. That's what I was expecting, and that's why I wasn't completely satisfied. But perhaps Rich would have liked it better this way anyhow, because the project wasn't supposed to be about Rich Mullins in the first place; it was supposed to be about Christ, and these are some of the best songs ever written about Him.
This is a great cd, that tells the story of Jesus's life :).......2004-03-10
The words that Rich Mullins wrote for this song were very touching and heart felt. I believe these songs tell the life of Jesus in every way. For anyone who wants to feel close to him listen to this CD. My Deliverer is a beautiful song and it makes you want to listen to it over and over again. My Deliverer mainly tells the story of how Joesph and Mary traveled through the desert to Africa. The other songs are excellent, too. The first CD consists of his recordings of these songs before he died. The second CD consists of the same songs with the ragamuffin band (Michael W. Smith, Amy Grant, and others) singing them after he had died. All around this is an excellent CD. I hope you all find my review very helpful:)

Incredibly Ambitious Album That Gets Better With Age.......2004-08-29
When this album first came out in the late spring of '92, I was disappointed. While clearly a very good album, it just didn't seem to live up to its predecessor, The World As Best As I Remember It, Volume 1. On top of that, producer Reed Arvin had seemed to go overboard with the strings this time around, making the album seem overproduced.
Well, I put this album on for its first spin in several years a few weeks ago, and while I still see the same flaws, they seem much less pronounced now. This album is the work of an artist who is near the top of his game, although (I'd argue) not quite there.
The album begins with as close-to-perfect of an album opener as I can imagine, "Hello, Old Friends." There's a bittersweetness to this tune that tugs at your heart immediately. At the time, this was (reportedly) to be Mullins' last album (thankfully, it was not), and now, it's about seven years since we lost Rich. So even 12 years after this album first came out, when Mullins sings, "There's really nothing new to say/But the old old story bears repeating," both sadness and joy hits you in an inexplicable way. It's quite a feat when a singer can sing a line like "When you find something worth believing/That's a joy that nothing can take you away" in a way that makes the listener feel a joy that's come only through trial, adversity, and sorrow. Never schmaltzy, this tune seems perfect for an album that ostensibly is one part of a culminating life's work.
We next get the expanded version of the previous album's "Step by Step" in "Sometimes by Step"; Mullins added verses to Beaker's chorus. The childlike innocence of the previous album's opening track had been changed to a more mature mixture of joy and weariness by that album's closing reprise; now, we get the mature reflection of a speaker looking back over his or her life. The verses still seem somewhat incomplete to me, as they did 12 years ago, and Arvin lays on the strings a bit too heavy, but the song's still a very good one.
"Everyman" is a gem, similar in sentiment to Volume 1's "Who God Is Gonna Use," except that the focus is now not who God will use, but who is welcome at the foot of the cross. Rich said once near the end of his life that he was definitely not a Calvinist, and this track proves it, as Rich joyfully exclaims "With a thorn in His brow, a spear in His side/Nails in His hands He died/For you and I and everyman." This is followed, however, by a track that displays a more traditionally Refomed theology in "The Just Shall Live."
"Waiting," the side 1 (to date myself) closer is one of the better pieces of poetry on the album. "To Tell Them" musically seems out of place on the album; I'm betting that it was one of the songs added after Reunion Records decided that 15 or so tracks was too much for one album and broke The World As Best As I Remember It into two releases. Still, it displays Rich's quirky side quite well.
"The Maker of Noses" is, to my mind, the second best track on the album, as Rich examines the cost of following Christ and the futility of any other pursuit. If the idea of following the One who has made your nose is a personal sentiment, "What Susan Said" is an even more personal track detailing the friendship Mullins had with cohort and frequent cowriter Beaker. A reference to "Wally and the Beaver" would be pure hokum in the hands of most writers, but Mullins' obvious emotion makes it seem fresh.
The album now comes to its climax. "Growing Young," inspired by an analogy used by G.K. Chesterton, is the album's high point. This is what it all of life boils down to, according to Rich: "And when I thought that I was all alone/It was your voice I heard calling me back home/And I wonder now Lord what was it made me wait so long/And what kept you waiting for me all that time/Was your love stronger than my foolish pride/Won't you take me back now/Take me back and let me be your child/'Cause I've been broken now, I've been shamed/I've learned to cry and I've learned how to pray/And I'm learning, I'm learning even I can be changed." Literary influences aside, it takes quite a writer to put such a deeply personal spin on the story of the prodigal son and make it seem so original. This song is heartbreaking and can leave you feeling wracked emotionally.
Appropriately enough, that emotional climax is followed by a childlike expression of trust in Rich's soothing rendition of the hymn "All the Way My Savior Leads Me." And the denouement continues with the album closer, a brief reprise of "Sometimes by Step."
At the time this album came out, some reviewers said that Volume 1 is from a child's perspective, while there's more maturity in Volume 2. That's too simplistic a conclusion. For all of the maturity evident in this album, no song in either volume is as mature or world-weary as Rich's ruminations on lost relationships and death in "The River," off of Volume 1. And both "Growing Young" and the simple trust of "All the Way My Savior Leads Me" brings Volume 2 back to a childlike perspective.
To my mind, this album is still not the equal of Volume 1, but Volume 1 was an incredibly hard act to follow. Volume 2 is an excellent album no matter which way you slice it; while not all songs are of the same quality, the album is an incredibly ambitious one that succeeds in 90 to 95 percent of its intentions. And that's a high enough success rate to make it worth 5 stars -- and every minute of your time.
Musical memories from a magnificent man.......2004-08-28
If you ask ten people what entering heaven will be like, you'll likely get ten different answers. I imagine I will find myself sitting around a warm campfire with a group of people, watching and listening as Rich Mullins plays acoustic guitar and sings "Hello Old Friends." Having the opportunity to listen to this song, and the others on this wonderful CD, is a taste of Heaven on Earth.
Rich Mullins was an incredible artist, a poetic painter with words and melody. This disc laid the groundwork for his masterpiece: "A Liturgy, a Legacy, and a Ragamuffin Band" - while it is not quite that masterpiece, it is nonetheless an incredible work of art, well deserving of a five star rating.
The disc begins with Rich playing acoustic guitar and singing: "Hello old friends / There's really nothing new to say / But the old, old story bears repeating /And the plain old truth grows dearer every day / When you find something worth believing / Well, that's a joy that nothin' could take away." Listening to this disc brings me great joy, and I like to start most every day off by listening to it.
Rich revisits the tune Step By Step (now titled "Sometimes By Step"), played on the hammered dulcimer. The chorus remains familiar ("Oh God, You are my God / And I will ever praise you / I will seek you in the morning / And I will learn to walk in your ways / And Step by Step you lead me / And I will follow you all of my days"), and the new verses are beautifully poetic.
Orchestral strings lead off "Everyman" - a song that refers to various Biblical characters who were touched by Jesus during their lives, in many different circumstances, and reminds the listener: "At the foot of the cross there's room for everyone / And love that is not blind / It can look at who we are and still see beyond / The differences we find / But with thorns in His brow and a spear in His side / Nails in His hand, He died for you and I / For you and I and everyman."
A solo piano introduces "The Just Shall Live" - The song grows as it goes, with percussion being added, then strings, and then a chorus as the listener is taken on a journey to the last days, when "the meek shall inherit the earth" and the just shall live - then the song resolves with solo piano.
"Waiting" is one of my favorite songs by Rich. A song to listen to when you need encouragement, when you feel that you are being tested, yet you just can't walk away from the Truth - and so you wait upon the Lord, having the faith that your strength will be renewed.
"To Tell Them" is an experiemental departure - a different song, with an odd time signature, piano and percussion, and sort of a funky world beat. Kevin Max Smith (from DC Talk) sings background on this track.
It's back to a familiar sound with "The Maker of Noses", a song that slowly builds in great Rich style. A wonderful song about seeking justice, and getting frustrated with the advice of this world to follow our hearts, our noses, our dreams - since these things don't lead to the Truth. We must follow the Father of hearts, the Maker of noses, and the Giver of dreams.
"What Susan Said" is a great story song about friendship. Whether it is Paul and Silas, or Abbot and Costello, nothing beats having a friend by your side. But what did Susan say?
"How love is found in the things we've given up / More than in the things that we have kept."
"Growing Young" is a beautiful and poetic song about running back to God with tears in our eyes after our multitude of sins. It serves as a reminder that we are all sinners in need of a Savior and as a foreshadowing of the ragamuffin theory that Rich would explore in more detail on his next album.
Rich closes the album with a beautiful version of the Crosby Hymn "All the Way my Savior Leads Me" and a reprise of his own praise and worship classic "Step By Step."
This is a great follow-up to Volume One, and a wonderful precursor to his masterpiece.
Outstanding music from an outstanding man!.......2001-12-31
Rich Mullins, once again, stirs souls with this sequel to TWASBIRI-Vol. 1. Some of the more noteworthy songs are "Sometimes by Step", "Everyman", "To Tell Them", "The Maker of Noses", "Growing Young", and "All The Way My Savior Leads Me". Of course, any song he wrote has significant meaning. The meoldies further amplify the ever-important messages he delivers.
there is nothing like the music of Rich Mullins.......2001-09-10
The other day, I was walking through a mall in London Ontario when suddenly, my wife and I passed a man playing a piano in the food court. From what I could tell, he was not a professional--he had laid his shopping bags beside him and just started playing. He was playing Rich Mullins's "Sometimes by Step." Even without words, the music that Rich Mullins created has the power to stir my soul.
"Sometimes by Step" is just one of the great songs on "The World As Best As I Remember It vol. 2." I know I've said it a lot...but I must say it again...Rich never made bad or even mediocre music. All the songs on this disc are great.
The highlights of this disc to me are: "Waiting," "What Susan Said," "Growing Young" (probably my favorite track), and Rich's rendition of "All the Way My Savior Leads Me" (Rich was great with hymns by Robert Lowery).
The thing that appeal to me most about the work of Rich Mullins is the deep insight of his lyrics. This disc is particularly strong in the lyrics department. Some examples:
"When a million voices whisper, and they tell me I should leave, into the shadows that the moon casts on these alleys and these streets. But I know that chasing shadows won't get me anywhere 'cause I've been there..." (Waiting)
"Two full grown men in a huddle of kids and they're trying to help them to believe what is too good to be real but is more real than the air they breathe. And it's Wally and the Beaver, David and Jonathan...it's the Love of Jesus puttin' on flesh and bone." (What Susan Said)
"And everybody used to tell me big boys don't cry. Well I've been around enough to know that that was the lie that held back the tears in the eyes of a thousand prodigal sons. Well we are children no more, we have sinned and grown old and our Father still waits and He watches down the road to see the crying boys come running back to His arms and be growing young." (Growing Young)
I cannot recommend this disc, and all of Rich's music enough. Get it. There is nothing like it.
What "Jesus" means.......2001-06-16
If you do a search for Jesus here on Amazon, you're bound to come up with all kinds of stuff...stuff from the Jesus Seminar talking about what a great cynic sage or Jewish Rabbi Jesus was; stuff from the Wiccans--no doubt describing Jesus as yet another earth mystic; stuff from Theologians that you have to work out to be able to lift while at the same time requiring that you keep a dictionary at hand for the every third word you don't know...well scrap all that stuff. I can tell you all you need to know about Jesus by playing you "Growing Young" and handing you a Bible. This stuff is great. Nobody makes music or writes songs like Rich did. This disc is just another case in point.

Awesome CD.......2003-05-05
This is one of the greatest albums ever to ber released!
Rich Mullins song writing talent shows through here so elloquently and powerfully that you cannot help but be moved.
This CD features such a wonderful array of classic Rich Mullins songs, each unique in it's composition and performance. Unlike other artists who have a particular sound or style that they use, Rich Mullins encorporates every style of music onto this CD. With staples of Chirstian Music such as Awesome God and If I Stand, to the lesser known Ready for the Storm and Home this CD will keep you listening throughout. There is no real point on this where you want to skip over a song to go on to the next one, they are all unique and wonderful. This album was a truly inspired work by one of Christian Music's greatest!
Found On This Disc Is The MOST Powerful Christian Song Ever.......2001-05-26
This album is wonderful. Now it is not the whole piece of art as THE WORLD AS BEST I REMEMBER IT VOLUME 2 but it is great. It is on this cd that we first heard AWESOME GOD. In my opinion this is the definitive Christian song of our time. It is a modern day Amazing Grace. The cd begins with the stirring call to missions, The Other Side Of The World. A choir of foreign childrren voices remind us that the other side of the world is closer than we think. With The Wonder is a somewhat forgetable song that weakens the overall quality of the cd. Awesome God is the next cut. What can be said of such an incredible song with such an incredible impact on the world. I don't think I will ever tire of singing this hymn and look forward to the first time I sing it before my Lord! If I Stand is one of my all time favorite Rich songs. So many memories I have of this song ministering to me in late night hours. "There is a loyalty that's deeper than mere sentiment and a music higher than the songs that I could sing, the stuff of earth competes for the alegiance I owe only to the giver of all good things". Boy was Rich deep. Home is a haunting song that speaks of our deep longing for a place we have never been but want to spend our lives forever. Such A Thing As Glory is also a bit forgetable and weakens the cd. And I Love You starts us down the slippery slope of not as good music followed by Ready For The Storm that only makes you wonder if you still have the same cd in the player. One True Love and How Can I Keep Myself From Singing end the cd uncerimoniously. However this cd is worth owning for AWESOME GOD alone. Home and If I Stand also give reason to cherish this sometimes inconsistent compact disc.
great songs.......2001-05-16
Rich's songwriting always blows me away! This earlier CD is no exception. It has a ton of awesome songs. How Can I Keep Myself From Singing is one of the best songs I've ever heard. Definately a CD worth having.
one of Rich's more unique albums.......2000-11-14
Rich Mullins is my favorite singer/songwriter. It is very likely that he will be always. I love all his albums-he didn't make mediocre music. "Winds of Heaven...Stuff of Earth" is one of his more unique albums.
I must admit that I come to this album carrying previous biases. I came to faith in Christ a couple of weeks after Rich left this world. I had no idea who Rich Mullins was or even that he had gone home. In the following months I joined the choir at our church. As I learned the songs that we sang every week I came to notice that Rich Mullins had written several of my favorites. It was only when I went to purchase one of his CD's that I learned of his passing. I was very surprised. I found out later that he had played at our church only about a month before the accident.
As I have slowly collected Rich's CD's I have been struck by their consistent excellence. Having recently read James Bryan Smith's wonderful biography of Rich, I now see that this excellence sprung from Rich's intense love for God. That love is evident on this disc. As is usual with Rich's recordings, this disc is filled with great songs.
Of all Rich Mullins' CD's, "Winds of Heaven...Stuff of Earth" has my favorite opening song: "The Other Side of the World" (and that's saying something...Rich has a whole lot of great opening songs on his discs.) "The Other Side of the World" is an awesome song. It is a prayer for the coming of God's Kingdom.
This disc also contains "Awesome God" which has become a worship classic (and was one of the songs we sang a lot in choir.) I said previously that I come biased to this disc...one reason was because of the fact that I had sung a lot of these songs before I heard them here. The other reason was that I bought the "Songs" album before this one. That brings me to the song "If I Stand". "If I Stand" was one of my favorite songs on "Songs". It is also one of my favorite songs on this disc. It is one of the best songs I've ever heard about the power of God's love and grace. In Isaiah 49:15-16 God speaks to Jerusalem (and in a sense to all who would later be called by His name) saying, "Can a woman forget her nursing child and have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, but I will not forget you. Behold, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; your walls are continually before Me." This is the kind of watchful, loving grace that Rich managed to at least partially (and beautifully) describe on "If I Stand".
Other songs that I really like from "Winds of Heaven...Stuff of Earth" are: "Home" which is one of those beautiful songs that only Rich could write-using the imagery of creation to describe and praise God; "Such a Thing as Glory" which is one of the more musically interesting songs on the disc; "...And I Love You" a great song about baptism, communion and loving God; "Ready for the Storm" is probably my favorite song on the disc. It was written by Dougie MacLean; who is an awesome singer/songwriter in his own right. I was recently introduced to his music by a friend. It is good stuff too (check it out if you get the chance).
I recommend this album. It is a great one. Admittedly, it is not my favorite Rich Mullins album, but Rich sure made it hard to choose just one.
Highly Recommended!.......2000-11-08
It is very difficult to choose which of Rich's albums to recommend for new listeners. Each of his albums has some amazing, life-changing songs (yes, many of his songs have forced me out of my comfortable Christian life and into something more). This CD is one of the great ones. Don't just buy it for "Awesome God" and "If I Stand." There is so much more to this album. "With the Wonder" will open your eyes to nature and God's creativity. "The Other Side of the World" paints a picture of the worldwide church and tells us that "the distance just dissolves into the love." The chorus of this song is inspiring:
"And I see the people who have learned to walk in faith, with mercy in their hearts and glory on their faces. And I can see the people, and I pray it won't be long until your kingdom comes."
And for the struggling ragamuffins, there are the songs "Home" and "Ready for the Storm," encouraging, true songs about the darkness and the light. The more I listen to my Mullins collection, the more I realize that there is no one best album of Rich's. And the compilations aren't enough. Start your collection. Buy one a month if you can. The songs never get old (I've been listening for ten years).

--Brad S. Caviness
