Customer Reviews:
I was very pleased.......2003-06-03
... I decided to buy it mostly because of the cheap price. But after opening and playing it, I was really glad I bought it. Notice I only gave it 4 stars, but to me that is very good (5 stars are reserved for recordings of the utmost quality).
Some of these concertos might be familiar to the listener, as they were to me, if he has heard Bach's keyboard concertos. However, I have always felt that the oboe was the most beautiful of wind instruments, and I enjoyed hearing them in this new light.
While I am not an expert on the oboe, the playing seems very good, and the phrasing and touch of the strings could not be better. Here's one recording with which can't go wrong, whether you are new to classical music or a seasoned listener.
Evidence of Changing Musical/Cultural Tastes.......2003-02-10
Amazing that such exquisite music lost interest in Bach's time. As experts have noted and these liner notes on this recording suggest, much of Bach's fame was not in his lifetime as musical tastes were changing.
Thus, much of his concerto for oboe need reconstruction. Here played ably by Hommel and backed by Cologne Chamber Orchestra.
Intonation and phrasing is adequate, at times a little too dark for my taste.
A perfect introduction to the music of J.S. Bach.......2002-08-30
This disc is as good an introduction to J.S. Bach as any I can think of. As the insightful liner notes indicate, Bach often used parts of earlier compositions while writing his 1730s concertos for harpsichord(s); researches into these concertos suggest that those included on this disc were originally written for oboe, and whether it's ultimately the case or not, this recording shines. Christian Hommel's restrained performance serves the music perfectly: each track features vast melodies and excellent ensemble-playing; meanwhile, the sound quality and balance couldn't have been better. This is pure, abstract music at its best: music whose power doesn't depend on what it might 'suggest' or 'represent', but only on its own language. And like all great music, the pieces on this disc become the springboards for contemplation that French painter Albert Gleizes yearned for in the early 1940s. Strongly recommended.
J.S. Bach Oboe Concertos.......2001-09-10
J.S. Bach is my favourite. Of his music I probably love his concertoes most. The 5 concertoes on this CD are all reconstructions, according to the notes in the cover, i.e.the available scores by Bach himself are for other instruments:
mainly harpsichord. The assumption is that Bach had also made versions for other solo instruments at an earlier date.
I actually know each of the recorded pieces here played on either harpsichord, organ, violin or oboe. One of the concertoes, BWV 1053, as mentioned in the cover too, is shared with a cantata.I have it as BWV 169.
The all oboe versions here, I think, are definitely the most charming.

Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.
Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11
I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

Customer Reviews:
ambitious and comprehensive.......2007-01-26
I bought this set because I was looking for early Dvorak, which is surprisingly difficult to find. As a collection of such hard-to-find material, this set of recordings is fabulous. I am already enamored of the fourth, listening to it over and over. The more I listen to this set of CDs, the more I like it. The technical quality of the playing, though overall not quite up to the level of the top world-class orchestras, is nonetheless excellent and in many ways more authentic of Dvorak and his world -- plus there are some really strong performances especially on the woodwind side.
An astonishing bargain on the used market.......2006-07-29
I was listening to Libor Pesek's complete Dvorak symphonies, which unlike most is generously filled with miscellaneous tone poems, overtures, and suites. The Czech Phil. sounds like they are to the manner born, but technical execution is spotty--this is an orchestra to appreciate for its local color rather than virtuosity. Pesek has middle-of-the-road ideas about the symphonies. The thin recorded sound isn't ideal, but the tangy Czech woodwinds are miked very close, which is appealing. There's no single performance to rival the best on CD, but everything is quite agreeable.
Then I noticed that on the used market this whole set sells for under $10--bargain alert. One could easily live with thwese readings and enjoy them al the more at such a steal.
Hard to beat.......2002-11-23
This set is a compilation of Pesek's recording cycle for Virgin between 1987-1995.
As a set of the complete symphonies it competes with Gunzenhauser (Naxos), Kertesz (Decca), Kubelik (DG), Jaarvi (Chandos) and Rowicki (Philips) In the UK this set is the cheapest way to buy a complete Dvorak cycle (there is a compilation box from Brilliant slightly cheaper but has the performances split unsuccessfully between three conductors : Paavo Jarvi, Kosler and Menuhin). However, in reviewing the set I took no account of price because, quite simply this set stands up well against all of the above.
First a note on the works. Dvorak's early symphonies are rarely performed and until recently hard to find on record. They dont reflect the maturity of style and understanding of symphonic form that one associates with 7, 8 and 9 but amongst them there are some real gems that it is a pity to neglect. Most notable is how clear Dvorak's orchestral voice is right from the start. Apart from strong and very obvious early influences from Wagner, Brahms and Beethoven what one hears most are pre-echoes of orchestral techniques used more successfully in the later works. Listening to the symphonies chronologically one is aware of the gradual maturing of form with the occasional marked change in approach such as from 4 - 5 when Dvorak's friendship with Brahms has clearly had effect. Needless to say, all the symphonies are orchestrally rich, colourful and dynamic with passages of great excitement and moments of sublime beauty.
Pesek's cycle alternates between his two favorite orchestras, 1,3,7,8 & 9 performed with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic (of whom he is currently conductor in residence) and 2,4, 5 & 6 the Czech Philharmonic (of whom he used to be conductor in residence). This alternation of orchestras adds an extra dimension to the cycle that I found quite refreshing. Pesek's approach has always been to let the orchestra have the freedom to express what he calls its "invisible spirit". "..you can hardly come to any orchestra and make them only play your way - it's a mutual exchange of experience..". Indeed this cycle gives one the chance to contrast the "invisible spirits" of the RLPO and CPO whilst still being aware of a unifying approach from Pesek.
The first 3 symphonies suffer perhaps from having too many ideas jostling for attention. It seems as if Dvorak is so excited with the infintie range of colours his orchestral paintbox can offer that he cant help but try out as many original and unusual scorings as possible. There are also many and frequent changes of dynamic, resulting in a kind of "crescendo-fatigue" Where Jaarvi tries hard to bring out an overall architecture that quite simply isnt there, Pesek, instead, revels in the many different textures and contrasting dynamics spotlighting certain passages for the inherent beauty they contain. I can think of no better approach for these early symphonies. With the fourth symphony however, Pesek now brings out the emerging sense of form as Dvorak reduces his orchestral palette in favour of more thematic development.
With Kertesz and Kubelik (and even the old Neumann on Supraphon) I was always aware of the shortcomings of the "middle" symphonies (5 & 6) feeling that they were "almost there but not quite". Under Pesek however, these symphonies exhibit a depth and maturity that gives me new respect. There is a relaxed confidence in his approach that makes us wonder why these works arent more played. There is much good music here and certainly I would put these particular performances at the top of my list.
When it comes to the "big three" (7, 8 and 9) there is so much competition in the catalogue that it would be impossible to pull out any one version and label it the best. Everyone has their own favorites (mine are Szell for 7, Kertesz for 8 and Barbirolli for 9). All I can say is the performances here are superb and cannot be criticised. Everything I look for in each performance Pesek has in spades. I may prefer Szell's third movement of the seventh or Barbirolli's opening to the ninth but this is countered by other aspects of the Pesek performances that are better in different ways. Most satisfying of all, having listened to Pesek guide me through the earlier symphonies, following his interpretation through into the last ones provides an insight and sense of completeness that any individual performance cannot achieve.
Finally a note on the recording. The CPO recordings (House of Artists, Prague) have slightly more ambience than the RLPO (Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool) which perhaps reinforces their "Czech" sound (memories of Supraphon!) but although the acoustic results in a slightly "fuller" sound it does not muddy the overall clarity of the excellent recording. The CPO recording of Symphony no 2 though was recorded in the Dvorak Hall, Prague and here there is slightly more reverberation. It's still within tolerable limits though. Overall the sound quality is excellent.
This is, all in all, great value for money and if the only Dvorak you know is the "New World" I suggest you go mad and buy this. You also get excellent performances of the Czech and American Suites, Othello, Wild Dove, My Home and Carnival Overtures and Scherzo Capriccioso thrown in as fillers!

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Tenor.......2004-02-08
This is an outstanding album and an outstanding tenor voice. I have listened to a lot of tenors over time and this voice is unique in its natural beauty and power. I can listen to the selections on this (and the previous ) album over and over and never tire of them. It may be a "crossover" voice in the sense that Watson successfully sings both pop and classical songs, but it has an electric quality that sets it apart from virtually any other tenor I have heard whether purely "operatic" or not. I cannot fathom what CD the authors of previous critical comments have been listening to but it must not be the same one I hear.
The Voice Does It Again.......2003-12-24
If anyone thought Watson's first album, The Voice, was a fluke, I recommend that they llisten to this one. Again there is the intriguing mix of popular and operatic/classical numbers and again there is the amazing tenor voice, which shifts from soft and intimate to soaring and powerful. All the selections are appealing but my favorites are Che Gelida Manina, Celeste Aida,The Magic of Love (with Lionel Richie), The Prayer (with Lulu), Mattinata, and Ave Maria. There is not a bad one on the whole CD, though, and the two added ones are beautiful..Highly recommended--do not miss this voice!
Superb Second CD.......2003-01-12
Watson here proves every bit as fascinating as on his first CD, "The Voice". Again he gives us a mix of classical/operatic and pop and it is quite irresistible. The first offering, Va Pensiero, is really stunning, beginning with the soft "pop" voice and then suddenly soaring into the beautiful, powerful tenor that is so unusual. I particularly like the operatic arias such as Che Gelida Manina but the duets with Lulu and Lionel Ritchie are also beautiful. Every number is lovely in its own way and this CD can be played over and over without becoming tiring.
Awesome! Really different........2002-11-06
I first heard Russell Watson a few weeks ago when he was featured as the closing artist for the Larry King Live show one evening on CNN (Oct 02). The song was "Va, pensiero" from his album Encore. As the song began my first impressions were "hmmm, pretty good tenor voice." But then, mid-song, Russell's switch to his operatic tenor voice literally made me hold my breath and made the hair stand up on the back of my neck (not to mention the tear in my eye). It wasn't just the tenor voice (I've heard other powerful tenors) but Russell's ability to switch back and forth from a pop vocalist to an operatic tenor is what struck me as absolutely incredible.
I had never before heard anyone do that, so I made a note of the name of his album "Encore" and a few days later got online to see what he was all about. I found a great many reviewers who raved on about how good Russell Watson is, but I was also intrigued by the vicious remarks made by some online reviewers (though I noted that those negative reviews were largely unsubstantiated with specifics).
I decided to buy it anyway, together with his first album "The Voice." I'm not disappointed in the least. If anything, hearing "Va Pensiero" again rekindled my appreciation of his voice. Now, I am not a great "traditional" opera expert in the least and have never heard an "original" operatic rendition of Va Pensiero, so I can't compare Russell to a traditional "pure" operatic voice. Do I care? NO! I wasn't looking for a traditional operatic tenor when I stumbled across Russell.
I have heard what I consider the beauty and diversity in Russell's voice and I like it. Period. If I like the combination of classical and contemporary voice that Russell brings, so be it. That combination may be heresy to a classical purist, but hey it's what I like, so frankly, I don't give a damn about what the true classical operatic voice should sound like... it's NOT what I'm looking for.
More of the same please.......2002-10-28
I had never heard of Russell Watson until the show Enterprise. His voice is superb. I have now heard all of his albums and enjoy each one but believe this is, by far, his greatest. His voice becomes part of the music, joining with his fellow artists' in the duets, and leads to a true appreciation for the new classical music. At the end of the day I want nothing more than to relax, to find peace in a crazy world, thank you Russell Watson for giving that to me.

Finest interpretation.......2007-06-24
Especially at this price you should compare these performances to any others.
Blacher was the concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic in the 90's, a
graduate of Julliard and these are, I feel, the best recorded renditions of
these works.
Great performance on BWV 1052!.......2007-01-08
I bought this CD several years ago. I listened to it then and felt the speed was a bit too fast for my taste, so I put the CD into my suitcase and left it alone.
I played this CD again recently by occasion and listen to the Concerto in D minor (BWV 1052). I was still a bit uncomfortable about the fast speed at first, but I was very impressed by the nice and smooth performance by the Cologne group. So I decided to listen to it a few more times to see if I can get used to the speed. Well, I did! Now I like version a lot and I put it to my favorite playlist for daily enjoyment. Even though I'm not a professional musician, I believe this version is one of the valuable ones out there and many Bach listeners would appreciate it.
This CD also contains Violin Concerto in A minor and E major. For those two concertos, J. Brezina / Camerata Romana version has been my long-time favorite.
I think if we can get one great piece of music in one CD with the low price like this one, we should be happy.

Here is all of Beethoven's significant music for wind ensembles--as significant as it gets, anyway, which isn't very. This disc competes directly with one by another period instrument ensemble, Classical Winds (Amon Ra). Mozzafiato's disc is significantly better from a technical viewpoint, but the Classical Winds simply sound as if they are having more fun with the music. You can base your choice between these on whichever factor is more important to you. Both are well-recorded. --Leslie Gerber

These late works by Richard Strauss, written in the 1940s for wind ensembles, are still relatively little known. They are quite different in style from Strauss's best-known, large-scale, noisy orchestral works, and may well appeal to listeners who find Ein Heldenleben just "too much." Musicians love to play the Sonatinas, and a number of fine recordings of the music are available. But the collegial style of Orpheus, the ensemble's incredible precision and verve, and the particularly fine recording make this disc a clear first choice for this music. --Leslie Gerber
