From the opening salvo of "Pooploser," starting with a crying baby and the ascending chant "f**king piece of shit, and you'll never amount to nothing," it's clear that The Beginning of All Things to End, a reissue of MuDvAyNe's out-of-print 1997 EP, Kill I Oughta, conveys an opinion. The former EP, now 11 tracks long, also includes "interludes" from their gold-certified debut, L.D. 50, plus a duo of bonus remixes. As such, the new CD is valuable for new fans anxious to own Kill I Oughta songs, and as a whole, it's also a surprisingly cohesive and powerful outing in the broad nu metal genre. "Seed" boasts the grind-groove power of Pantera, while the melodic yet seething sounds of "Cultivate," with its big, funky bass line and heated vocals from singer Kud, also features the raw honesty that permeates MuDvAyNe's on-the-edge sound. The Midwestern quartet, with its face paint and trendy look, have a welcome breadth and depth to their music and style and are certainly worth digging into, The Beginning being a good place to start. --Katherine Turman

Not your typical Mudvayne.......2006-04-01

I bought this cd expecting to hear some Mudvayne that isn't on the're other couple cds that would be just as good as there other cds. I was wrong. Its really amature and not the typical Mudvayne sound your used to. I agree that track 10 the dig remix is pretty good. Eventhough I have that remix on a compilation cd I think its on the Valentine Soundtrack

Kill I Oughta Rocks!.......2006-03-13

Sure it might not be like L.D. 50, TEOATTC, or Lost & Found. But Mudvayne did tremendous work with this masterpiece! But to tell you the truth, I found this album to be much more heavier then L.D. even if Ryan wasn't envolved back then. Even though, this great album was supposed to be released in 1997, but who cares, Kill I Ougtha or whatever you pronounce it is a must have for Mudvayne fans! But now, its called TBOATTE now with its released in 2001 & it rocks, you guys won't be disappointed, especially hardcore Mudvayne heads! I have all 4 of their albums, & I'll be glad if they'll make a 5th album soon in 2007!

I would stick to their recent work...this album is unpolished and unimpressive. Only for die-hard fans who must own everything Mudvayne. 2 stars only because of the Dig remixes tagged onto the end, but you can find those on other compilation albums so I'd stay away from this one. Sorry to dissapoint.

Listen You Oughtta.......2006-01-31

Originally released back in 1997 as "Kill I Oughtta," Mudvayne's debut was re-released in 2001 as "The Beginning Of All Things To End" (which cleverly connects with the title of their 2002 album) with a few extras tacked on the end. It's always fun to hear the earliest music possible from established musicians, and Mudvayne's debut is no exception. The big surprise is that it actually turns out to be a bit better than their later efforts (not to slight them in anyway). Despite the fact that the line-up is missing Ryan on bass, their signature sound is established pretty early with this effort.

"Poop Loser" -- yeah, you heard me -- opens the album up on a somewhat awkward note, but soon after, "Seed" picks this album up and keeps running. The best cuts from here would be "I.D.I.O.T." and "Cultivate," which are just as good as anything off of their official debut album, "LD 5.0." The music on "Kill I Oughtta" is simply streamlined Mudvayne. If you want to hear the band just rock out without too much dramatics or showing off, this is where you want to be. The bonus tracks include not only two remixes of "Dig," but a track titled "LD 5.0" which weaves all the interludes from that album into one song. Definitely an interesting listen. The remixes themselves are actually quite impressive. Both are done by Rhys Fulber (Front Line Assembly, Fear Factory) and are actually listenable, even to the most discriminating ear.

So, aside from it's production values and moderate sound quality, "Kill I Oughtta" is among Mudvayne's best work. Any serious fan should own this, even if they aren't a completist. There isn't much else to say about this release. The music just speaks for itself.

MUDVAYNE ROCKS THE JOINT OVER & OVER AGAIN!!!! .......2006-01-24

Ever since L.D. 50 has been released, I was pleased that Mudvaynes 2nd album TBOATTE was to be released in 2001 already, but who cares, I picked it up & liked it already. Two remixes of "Dig" were awesome. It formely was named Kill I Outa & it originally was the first Mudvayne album that Ryan wasn't involved in Mudvayne back then. Some people rate this below but I think this is one of their best albums along with L.D. 50. Try this album out people &or Mudvayne fans, you won't regret this taste of Mudvayne music, I KNOW.p.s. It was supposed to be released in 1997, just to let you Mudvayne fans know thats all.

Why, yes, we do hate your music..........2006-04-11

...because D.R.I. did it back in 1987. And they did it better (although with thinner production). To hear a band ranting about other bands ripping off a scene that they love, when they are in fact merely off the same scene is pretty damn sad.
"What I really hate is music like yours, makes me wanna smash your head through a door..." - Who's music? We don't know, but I'm guessing that it's the music of all of the "fake" hardcore bands out there. Doesn't really matter because it's kind of a [...]lyric, anyway.
Sworn Enemy try to combine the ferocity of metal with the passion of hardcore. The problem is that they are missing both the passion and the ferocity. They are loud, though.

Great album! Every song on here is just straight up brutal hardcore with a metal influence. I had heard of sworn enemy but never heard them. Glad I picked this up. If you want something to play loud and bang your head this is it!!!

LISTEN UP KIDS! .......2006-02-04

I was driving home about a week ago and I heard this song SCARED OF THE UNKNOWN on a late night hardcore show. I was blown away by it! This is some good, nasty, stuff. Heavy duty skiz if you know what I'm saying. NOW LISTEN! I'm not your typical growl em up hardcore fan either. I'm very picky, and usually I tend to dig on much more rock and roll type material, but I do know solid stuff when I hear it. I went out and purchased this thing, and have now found a very fine CD to pump my fists and kill to. These guys have a raw sound, but they play nice and tight and the vocals are very crisp, for a growl. I have been truckin this around on my discman for days, and haven't seen the tracklist since.. but I'm REALLY diggin' this. REALLY! Check it out if you 're in the mood for something with nuts.

A GREAT CD!!.......2006-02-01

i have been a big fan of sworn enemy for a long time know and this is by far their best stuff yet. if you are expecting a straight hardcore album you'll be a little dissapointed since it has alot of slayeresque moments but mixed with enough hardcore to remain true to where they came from. the production on this is very crisp,and the mix is loud and nasty!!good metal parts,great breakdowns and parts that you can punch your friends to your little hearts content to. a great cd, good job guys!!!if you like any other sworn enemy stuff get it now!!!

A great young band worth checking out.......2006-01-25

In principle, Sworn Enemy should sound almost exactly like a band like Bleeding Through. They both play hardcore influenced thrash, and they both became a lot more famous due to the popularity resurgence of heavy metal in recent years. But Sworn Enemy stand out from other bands (like Bleeding Through) for two reasons: a) Sal Lococo's vocals are quite high pitched, and (more importantly) Sworn Enemy prove that they can riff better than most of the rest. Indeed, the band clearly spent some time around Slayer while making this album (they actually toured with them), because most of the sharp and ultra hot riffs evoke Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman circa 2001 (the "God Hates Us All" era). Add some persistent, energetic drumming, and even a couple of guitar solos, and you have an album which is very aggressive and is typically (especially in track six, "Absorb the Lies") catchy. The awesome sounding album opener points "The Beginning of The End" in a promising direction, with fiery guitars over a heavy drum beat. Other highlights include "Scared of the Unknown" and "All I Have," which have pounding, churning power chords and fast double bass work, the very Slayer-esque "After The Fall," and the explosive, blistering barrage of super fast, almost buzzsaw riffs on the fourth track, "Save Your Breath." "The Beginning of The End" doesn't have any classic songs, and a couple tracks around the middle sort of blend in with each other. But all in all, this quite an impressive album which makes for a great listen and makes Sworn Enemy worthy of opening for bands like Slayer and Slipknot in concert. Recommended to all fans of metalcore and modern thrash.

Was always a big fan of Grant Lee Buffalo, "Jubilee" totally rules, and Grant Lee on his own rocks too!

"Like A Lover" is one of the simplest songs, but conveys so much feeling, it knocks me out everytime I hear it.

"Mobilize" the beat always makes me think of Portishead, such a cool song

"Spring Released" is one of those songs that's timeless. It's like religion to play this track coming into the sunny season.

Do yourself a favour and buy anything of this exceptional musician that you can get your hands on. C'mon Grant Lee, give us another!!

rhythm + romanticism + melody = Mobilize.......2005-07-14

"Epic masterpiece..." "Channeling John Lennon" These are descriptions from other reviews, both puzzling to me. There's nothing epic about this, nor is there the slightest resemblance to Mr. Lennon -- who composed music in an entirely different vein. This is a personal album, sometimes quiet and sometimes hypnotically beat-driven. As far as I can tell GLP played and sang everything himself. This is like his earlier Ladies Love Oracle, but juiced up with rhythm. Acoustic guitars and electric keyboards predominate, with the sythetic percussion.

Mobilize doesn't really hang together as a unified piece. It is more a collection of songs, most of which are very good. The best of them are dreamy, entrancing, and soothing. Computer-sequenced beats give a pulse to many of the tracks. The lyrics are specific enough to be enticing but vague enough to allow your own interpretation. But take advantage of the free amazon.com download of See America and you will hear for yourself the strengths of this Grant-Lee Phillips effort. It will tell you ten times more than I could ever say in a review. Besides, there are only two kinds of music: good and bad. And you and I will never completely agree on which is which. At least give this a try. Was See America Grant-Lee's twist on Simon & Garfunkel's "...all come to look for America"? It seems so to me, and I think it is equally clever and anthemic.

See America, Sleepless Lake, and April Chimes showcase Phillips' ability to write a haunting melody, which is something of a lost art. See his Ladies Love Oracle CD for more of the same.

The other free download, the title track, is probably the least enjoyable tune on the album. It sounds a bit off-kilter, with its minor chords and allusions to war. The other tracks are much less depressing. Spring Released is positively bouyant, as is Beautiful Dreamers. (My grandmother used to play the classic old song Beautiful Dreamer, which GLP deftly incorporates into his own new composition.)

GLP is not trying to push the envelope or pump you up or sermonize. He seeks to entertain, by presenting a little piece of his contempative romantic soul. Treat yourself to some high class pop. Get this album. You can catch glimpses of GLP as the "town troubadour" on the first season of Gilmore Girls, too. That's how I was first introduced to his music.

I lost my first copy of this CD. I can't imagine how. It never left the house. But I had to buy another, because I knew I would miss it. I think you might feel that way about it, too.

Only 500 times over..........2002-11-08

I first heard Grant-Lee when he was part of Grant-Lee Buffalo. A friend made me a tape of "Mighty Joe Moon" about six years ago. I hadn't really thought about Grant-Lee until I saw the Exile Follies tour with Kristen Hersh, Grant-Lee and John Doe. I was so impressed with Grant-Lee that I had to hear more. I downloaded parts of songs from this album and listened to them over and over. I had to buy the album. So I bought it a week ago and have been listening to nothing else but this since. It's on most of the day at work and then on in the car for four or five songs at a time. I truly love this cd, it's a good thing that it's not on tape or the tape would be worn out already.

There is something really catchy about the songs that make you want to listen to them over and over. They also get stuck in your head and you just have to listen to them! "Spring Released," "Sadness Soot" and "Beautiful Dreamers" are the main ones that I keep singing over and over in my head. "See America" has a wonderful romantic sound to it that makes you want to take a road trip. I thought the lyrics seemed really cool at first, then I read the lyrics in the liner notes and realized that they are even cooler than they sound, they are quite poetic.

If you've never heard Grant-Lee, I've learned that you're missing out. He's definitely up there with my faves - PJ Harvey, Kristen Hersh, Tori and Liz Phair. I will definitely be adding more Grant-Lee Phillips to my collection as I can afford it.

Move to this........2002-08-26

Grant Lee Phillips is a top-class singer-songwriter who has a wealth of experience as well as two or three truly great records behind him, and somehow you just knew he wasn't going to disappoint with Mobilize. It finds Phillips embracing a more polished, modern sound than past efforts - accentuated by the classy, breatless pop of the opener 'See America' and similarly impressive 'Humankind'. As the title suggests 'Love's A Mystery' is all mystique and intrigue with Phillips sounding eerily like David Byrne, and is exactly the kind of left-field tunesmithery on the human condition at which he excels.
The real gem here though is 'Sadness Soot' - dizzying in it's magnificence and showcasing just how remarkable Phillips' voice really is - a master of phrasing, mood and expression. As with his Grant Lee Buffalo albums, just when you think you're in for more pop thrills, we get something edgy and challenging like the title track to throw you off the scent. The second half of Mobilize is engaging and interesting, if a little less consistent than the first (though that's a common complaint these days). Still, the bonus track 'Sunday Best' is a rather jaunty closing treat.
For listeners that like their music to be innovative, fresh and just a little outside the square then Mobilize will fit the bill nicely.

Even Better By Himself?.......2002-08-06

Having been an enourmous fan of his work in 'Grant lee Buffalo', I was anxious to hear what he could come up with by himself. After hearing 'Ladies Love Oracle', I was expecting something the same, but what I heard really delighted me. I love Ladies Love Oracle and I love Mobilize.

Grant-Lee is simply one of THE GREAT singer-songwriters (of all time in my oppinion), and now he's taken the genre into cool new territories. If you liked Grant Lee Buffalo, you won't have absolutely NO objections with this album,despite it being quite a bit more 'funky' (for want of a better work) with its electric drums etc...

Grant-Lee's strengths have always been his song writing ability and his voice and these things both come through strong with his 'new sound' (which is equally as appealing and beautiful as it is different to the 'Buffalo' sound).

I was fortuneate enough to hear him live (twice) in Brisbane (australia) in May '02 and it was trully amazing. He is such a talented guy.

I'm hanging out for another solo effort, and until then, Mobilize will keep a huge smile on my face

This is album deserves 6 stars. You gotta love these rhymes, beats, subject matter, etc. Actually EVERYTHING! MURS doesn't even belong in the underground. This guy has more skills than 95% of all rap artists. He doesn't claim to be a gangster or a baller, just a man. Murs is the true people's champ! What more can I say? If you are a true hip hop/rap fan, this belongs in your catalog. Let me end this review with just an example of how tight his rhymes are: "First I gotta let you know that I flunked recess,
Aint no time for me to play when I gotta be fresh." Plenty more from where that came from......

Great Album.......2006-08-05

Wow!!! If you are into hard hitting lyrics with actual meaning, then Murs comes correct. It's nice to see someone in the rap game coming with actual meaning and does not care if it's mainstream. A wonderful breath of fresh air from the hip hop world. Murs puts it down for Southern California. His lyrics flow over endless beats that hit home with true lyricism. An instant classic that has the feel of old school hip hop. A must listen!!

Murs is craaaazy.......2006-03-29

This CD starts off with the track "You and I" a song where Murs brings listeners up to date on his life. This is a dope first track cause it's not your typical intro, it's kind of like when you haven't seen someone for a long time and you bring the other person up to date. The next song is an actually interlude by Ohio's own Mr. Dibbs, which features some pretty dope sampling and some strange sounds, it's a worthy intro for the rest of the album. What Do You Know is the next song which features some machine-gun flow, however when Murs says, "A really dope beat" I think he's kidding, cause the beat is VEEERY basic, pretty much the minimal for a Def Jux production. The Night Before is a sick track about the advancement of underground hip-hop in Cali. Transitions of a Rider is another track worthy of note, about people in California who don't gangbang. Risky Business is a sick track basically reminiscent of the movie Risky Business, but Humpty-Hump is in it and he makes the track worthy of note. The songs imbetween here and my favorite song on the CD Got Damned are all very good. But I really don't want to go into all of them. Got Damned is a song about the struggle Murs faces being a black rapper in a white rapper dominated underground. How his black fans are pissed he has white fans, and how he's trying to get as big as possible without selling out. He also states in the song how he manages to transcend all of it and make good music. Without a doubt this is the best track on the CD.

This entire CD is awesome,with extensive collaborations, decent beats, and most importantly awesome lyrics by Murs as per usual. You should definetly pick up this CD if you're a fan of "Sitcom Rap" as Murs calls it, or rap about everyday life.

Stop Sleeping-This Dude is Nice!!!!.......2006-03-02

I was introduced to Murs a little over a year ago. I first heard of him during one of my daily quests for hip hop knowledge on the internet, and after doing some homework on him I decided to pick up one of his CD's. Murs has since become one of my favorite rappers (my other favorites include 2pac, Big Pun, Dre from Outkast, Jay-Z, The Gza, and Black Thought-just to drop some names). Murs is probably the most honest rapper I've ever heard. He speaks his mind, and he will rap about any subject. He has some interesting and controversial viewpoints, and I tend to agree with most of them. Dude is a very versatile emcee. The first Murs cd I purchased was Murs 3:16 the 9th Edition, which is a great cd in its own right, but overall I probably like The End of The Beginning better. I can relate to a lot of the subject matter on this cd.

The highlights of this cd include:
1) You and I --basically a summary of his rap career to this point
3) I know -- great track where Murs shares some of his viewpoints of view on life--without sounding like he is preaching
4) The Scuffle --track that was probably designed to get some s*** off of his chest
5) Last Night -- Autobiographical track where Murs tells reveals some of his episodes in his neighborhood. Great production as well.
8) Risky Business -- About girls and partying-simple but well done
10) Gods work -- Personal accounts about work, touring, and women
18) Done Deal -- Feel good track of the album

I have to admit there a couple of tracks with wack production, but the good songs far outnumber the bad ones. The lyrics on this cd are great though, and Murs always finds interesting topics to rap about. Dude is not your typical emcee, but that is what makes him so good.

While underground heads are already familiar with Murs, he is definitely not yet getting the recognition he deserves. Do yourself a favor and add this one to your cart. This dude is the best rapper you haven't heard of - yet.

Murs joins the Definitive Jux family.......2005-05-03

I was first exposed to Murs from the album he made with Slug, "Felt - A Tribute to Christina Ricci" (2002). I then later saw him perform with Slug on the "Scribble Jam 7" video. That amazing 30 minute performance was enough to make me get off my a$$ and check out some of his work. Murs has been making music for 10 years prior to this album. It's pretty shocking that he hasn't found his true fan base yet. He makes hardcore underground gangster rap music, and it seems that only white kids (for the most part) are listening. Maybe it's because he raps with a lot of white guys. Maybe it's because he's into things like skateboarding instead of playing "ball". Either way, I'm happy that I was able to make the discovery. Upon first listen, I was shocked at the amount of skill he possessed. I do like the way he raps about everyday life. His lyrics are extremely interesting without being overbearing in the slightest. Murs doesn't take his music lightly. In fact he takes his music as serious as the likes of Slug, Brother Ali, and Eyedea; maybe even more (he played 200 shows/dates in 2003). He's a rap veteran that is showing absolutely no signs of stopping. He's got the art of storytelling down to a science. Murs is one cocky emcee. He has no problem telling people he's the best, and I've yet to see him fail at proving himself. Especially when he killed Eyedea in a "practice" battle before the scheduled MC battle of the "Scribble Jam 9" video. He constantly proves that he's a force to be reckoned with.

The amount of variety on this album is what makes it so appealing. Whether he's talking about the regurgitation of the music industry, crime, or partying when his parents aren't home, he's always on key. The riveting philosophy and commentary is what makes Murs so interesting. "You & I" kicks off the album with some great lyrics like this one: "Straight low budget I was underground thuggin' it / You think I gave a f*** about a publicist? NO!" Murs is at his best on songs like "What Do You Know?" and "The Night Before...". Check out this lyric: "Last night I almost got shot on my block / Not the block where I live at, the block where I chill at / Where I keep it real at, and used to pack steel / At times I feel it's the spot I'll get killed at". But one of my current favorites is where Murs raps about his love for skateboarding on "Transitions az a Ridah," where the rhythm is made up of skateboards sweeping in and out of ramps. Aesop Rock lends a hand on "Happy Pillz," which definitely stands out. "Risky Business" features our buddy Shock G (aka Humpty Hump) and Murs throwing a phat party while his parents are out of town. I also like "BT$" a lot. There seriously isn't a throw-away track in the bunch. And with a slew of producers by the likes of El-P, Ant, and RJD2, this album is a classic in the making.

Overall, Murs has quite the interesting personality. He will open your eyes, and make you smile with his humorous wit. The issues are thought provoking and alluring. Up until now, all I knew about Murs was the buzz and the hype that surrounded him. Now I will be adding to the hype with high praise.

you know, i thought at first when i heard FUNKY NASSAU that this was gonna be one of those albums where the song released (of course, they are considered "one hit wonders".) is the first cut and the rest of the album just plain sucks!!!! i have never been so happy to be wrong in my whole unfulfilled LIFE!!!!! this is the type of funkiness that i have dreamt about for the vast majority of my life!!!! ESSENTIAL BOMPALICIOUSNESS!!!! if you like that raw HUMMAFUNK, then you will enjoy this immensely.

Great Caribbean Funk! .......2007-01-23

First off, the album is along the lines of 70's James Brown, War, etc, etc... It's neat to hear how funk influenced music all over the world (I immediately think of Fela Kuti), and this album doesn't disappoint. Every track is invocative of funk music, with plenty of brass, nice guitar solos, and I especially enjoyed the lead singer - he has an undeniable Caribbean accent, but it just adds to the uniqueness of the sound. The only drawback for me personally was the lack of drawn out jamming, which, again, is totally a personal thing - I like long, drawn out music. I totally recommend this album to any fan of the JBs, the Meters, and the list could go on and on.

The return of the original Funky Nassau.......2001-05-26

After 30 years this album is still sounding good.

The title says it all.......2007-05-13

For lovers of Ian and Sylvia music, this album is bittersweet. As for the music itself, it is another excellent piece of work done by this unequalled duo. But as the title suggests, this album signalled the end of their collaboration in music and the end of their marriage. Nothing in the album, other than the title, suggests this as the music is, as usual, first rate. They even revisit an old hit, Summer Wages, and do it as a duet rather than as a solo by Ian as they originally produced it. This is an outstanding album.

Late Ian & Sylvia Nashville Effort.......2001-06-04

Frustratingly, the sleeve notes on this disc indicate that it was intended to consist of both of Ian & Sylvia's Columbia Records albums. In fact, this contains only the first of these two albums, originally sold as "Ian & Sylvia" in 1971.

Stung by the commercial failure of their "Great Speckled Bird" masterpiece (which can be found on Amazon under the name "Great Speckled Bird"), Ian & Sylvia retreated somewhat and produced a solid but conservative Nashville style album using a surprising number of outside tunes (only 6 of the 11 songs are Tyson originals). The Tyson tunes, however, include a fine remake of Ian's "Summer Wages," two songs introduced on his Canadian TV show "Nashville North" ("Some Kind of Fool," "Shark & the Cockroach"), a deeply poignant collaboration about the necessity of putting down an elderly and disabled horse ("Barney") and one of Sylvia Tyson's most powerful ballads, the beautifully arranged "Everybody Has to Say Goodbye."

But the second Columbia album ("You Were on My Mind") is nowhere to be found. Instead, Bear Family appends four extra tracks from an unknown time period. They are interesting but they do not fit with the album material and are not particularly strong.

If you enjoyed Ian & Sylvia's MGM albums ("Lovin' Sound" and "Full Circle"), this record will give you great pleasure. It is these two folksters' final foray to Nashville together and benefits from excellent production values.

God Is An Astronaut is an Irish band that has existed for more than four years. The end of the beginning is their debut cd which features eleven tracks recorded during 2002 to 2004 as well as being enhanced with three videos. God is an Astronaut sounds like a band name that would belong to a three chord garage band from America, rather than a dreamy chill-out lo-fi threepiece from Dublin. It s not dancey enough to be called dance music, and yet while dabbling generously in electronica at times, it offers a much fuller sound than the brittle sparsity and atmospheric minimalism we ve come to expect from the genre. What we get in return is a much more melodic and immediate record. Title track, The End of the Beginning, weighs in with a swirling ethereal opening before it s direction is pinned down by throbbing beats and a melodic guitar line. The stunning Coda is built around a near post-rock guitar motif, while Remembrance follows a similar outline; although this time God is an Astronaut choose piano as the glue to paste their ambient layers together. Point Pleasure is possibly the highlight, changing direction to a fervent interlude midway through which completely alters the track. Route 666 is closer to the more digitised glitchy electronica that s fashionable at the moment, but it s still couched in heavy beats and a great rhythm, while closing track Lost Symphony clings to a subtle and brooding bass-line. At times it echoes The Human League, and once or twice it soaks up the heady dub rush of Massive Attack, and the solar landscapes on the new UNKLE album. Indeed, you get the feeling on some tracks like Point Pleasure and the intro of Fall from the Stars that very serious attention has been paid to the likes of Blue Lines and Protection when writing up their list of creative influences.

Greatest hits of classical music.......2001-08-13

The use of the words "from the Movies" in the title of this compilation is misleading. While there are a handful of titles that were great originals from movies (the Star Wars theme, for example), the majority of the music is simply great classical music that happened to show up in a movie. This technicality aside, the music was amazing. The clarinet concerto and the Puccini opera from "Witches of Eastwick" are two of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written.

An excellent collection of classic music from great movies.......2001-08-03

I belong to that camp of people who think that if Mozart was alive today he would be writing scores for theatrical films. The best thing about "Music From the Movies" is that it combines the use of classical music in movies, such as Wagner's "The Ride of the Valkyries" in "Apocalypse Now" and Puccini's "O Mio Babbino Caro" in "A Room With a View" with John Williams' "Main Title" from "Jurassic Park" and the "John Dunbar Theme" from John Barry's score for "Dances With Wolves." Unfortunately of the 33 tracks on this 2-disc set, only the last half-dozen or so are by contemporary composers. So the chief charm of this collection remains that it allows you to identify the classic music used in movies such as "Platoon," "A Clockwork Orange," "Wall Street," and "Kolya." Placido Domingo and Herbert Von Karajan are representative of the singers and conductors included in this collection, which is truly one of the better sets featuring classical music in the movies.

I ordered this CD to get one piece of music only. What I received in reality was a compilation of masterpieces to refresh and enliven my very soul. The operatic selections are well known pieces performed by 'the great ones' (i.e Placido Domingo). Here you get the best of opera without having to endure what the uneducated would consider tendious. Additionally, I was surprised to discover how many movies themes were excerpts from the classics. This CD includes the name and movement of each selection, as well as the performer. It is a wonderful appetizer before investing in a full meal. I didn't begin with this intention, but now I want to hear complete pieces; anticipating a new excitment for many of the composers.

A super budget 5 CD collection of all of Grainger's Piano music.
Every last note!
The shipping alone would be $17.00+ for the 5 individual Cds.
Englishman Martin Jones plays these as if he wrote them. He is thoroughly inside this music.
I think his best work to date.
He is joined on CD #5 by Richard Mcmahon and Phillip Martin. Where they rollick in various combos and trios on 1, 2 and 3 pianos. This is exhilerating. Especially on an truly uplifting version of Green Bushes.
The entire set is strongly idiomatic and given a clear, crisp, warm and spacious recording. FIRST CLASS sound.
There are too many highlights to single out, but the In A Nutshell Suite and Green Bushes are especially GOOD!
There is not a bad note or "vibe" on any of these CDs.
Highly recommended for Granger fans and fans of English Piano Music.
