If you have enjoyed recordings of plain chant (Gregorian chant) then you may want to explore the traditions of the Russian orthodox church. This CD is good value for money. The recordings date from 1965 but sound much more recent than that on this excellent transfer. Keep in mind that Naxos also have a couple of excellent recordings of Russian Orthodox music too with a choir that is much more focused than this one.

However if you really want to hear someone that has incredible impact I would suggest almost anything by Anatoli Grindenko and the Russian Patriachate Choir. Paul Hillier, arguably the most important choir director in the world today, listed their Liturgy of St John Chrsotostom in his 10 desert island CDs for Goldberg magazine and says he buys everything they record. The sound quality of the Opus 111 recordings is often spectacular and audiophile grade.

This CD truly surprised me....not knowing what to expect from the Slavonic Liturgy, and a big fan of sacred chant, I found myself deeply and profoundly moved! Chants of the Slavonic Liturgy contain some of the most beautiful and serene religious chant I have ever heard!!! I highly recommend this cd without any doubt or reservation!

Each of the composers here was a significant contributor to the Harlem Renaissance and by tune or text, these works document the coming jazz explosion. Many have never before been recorded.

For over 10 years, The VocalEssence Ensemble Singers and Chorus (conducted by Philip Brunelle) has presented an enduring series of concerts showcasing the talents of trailblazing African American composers. Creation is soul-searching. Nothing is ever finished. Carl Ruggles Carl Ruggles (18761971) was a maverick American composer of short works that project a sense of infiniteness. His musical vision was majestic. However, like rare precious stones, his inimitable works were cast in print only a handful of times. To get to the essence of Ruggles, one can dig through piles of unpublished drafts and near-complete works that he left behind after his death in 1971. The circumstances around these works tell much about the creative process of his music and the philosophies that guided his craft. The incomplete works reveal triumphant music that swells the Ruggles canon, and deepens appreciation of his accomplishments. This recording offers a glimpse at Ruggless grander transcendent art. The story of the unpublished sketches, transcriptions, and eventual realizations spans the twentieth century. The scores for the unknown works on this recording began as posthumous realizations by John Kirkpatrick from the disparate Ruggles sketches. With Kirkpatrick as trusted editor, Ruggles had showed preliminary sketch ideas to him over the years, some via letters. He left remaining drafts and miscellaneous fragments toward these acknowledged works at his death. Counting the material marked for Affirmations (or Evocation #5, or in one place, Visionsthe title Kirkpatrick favored) there are more than a thousand potential contributions to this piece alone. Considering the mountain of viable sketches, his past collaborations with the composer, and a thirst to hear more music of the reticent Ruggles, Kirkpatrick assembled various sketches into performable editions. They are remarkably tight in construction. Kirkpatrick described his approach to pulling Ruggles's works together like stringing pearls. This CD offers the first recordings of four substantial piano works, two songs, and a work for violin and piano realized by John Kirkpatrick.

Breathtaking Solemnity.......2001-01-25

I don't know a word of Russian language. I love serious choral music which is appropriate for worship. I am a choral singer. This recording and all the others in this rich series, hover over the listener and reverberate in the soul. The absence of the distractions of instruments is so subtle, one is well into the listening process before the realization that it is the human voice, and the human voice in agreement, which dares to approach the Throne of God. If these choral scholars are not devout Christians, they certainly fooled me. It is ethereal, robust, and earthy, all at the same time elevating in the transmission of devout worship. This is the music I use to meditate. This is the music I play in my ear as I drift off to sleep at night. I feel that this music and the music in the entire series is transcendant of culture and language. It probably is transcendant of sectarian or denominational belief. What a treasure they have revealed to these poor, simple ears!
