An continuation of excellence..........2007-05-25
In this recording Anita Baker continues her unique, emotionally filled ballad style. Now when I say this, understand that these songs are distinct from Rapture. No veiled repeated progressions or formulas. These pieces are of the same high quality though.
Once again Anita conveys the sense of passionate romance with a magnificent voice. Songs filled with longing. She is well accompanied by top flight musicians and the outstanding vocal quartet: Perri, i.e. the Perry sisters from Bakersfield, California. The provide a solid vocal background with rich harmonies, never intrusive, but with rich textures.
"Lead Me Into Love", "Just Because", "I Want to Know What Good Love Is" are highpoints and they draw you in.
Anita is this rare in that you can simply listen to that rich, full voice and enjoy it and normally I am the type to simply be content with that. Yet the thing is that she uses that voice to great effect to convey so much emotion. With a voice like hers, many a singer could fall back on it and you might have some nice ballads, but nothing truly engaging. Anita engages you and invests her self in the song that while impressive for her technique, never loses her accessibility.
Another must-have recording.
GOING BACK TO A GENTLER, KINDER TIME!.......2005-12-29
This is Anita's finest album ever. You can feel the love this lady has for her husband. Ms Anita Baker has brought "love" back from the 80s to a much-needed timeframe of the "now and ever so hateful" new millenium! Anita takes me back to a time when the Black woman loved to be put a pedestal..have her toes kissed..to be loved, caressed & courted..to be worshipped. The 80s were a time when a Black man, like Anita's man, wasn't considered "weak" because he is loving man. Thank you Anita for sharing the love you have for your man, and reminding Black women everywhere that a man who is kindhearted like me should not be made fun-of or spat-upon, but rather admonished, uplifted and respected. Thank you, Ms Baker for great hits like "Giving You the Best I Got" & "Precious"--reminders that genuine love still does exists amongst the often dark & turid background of today's mindset of "Girl, get him before he gets you" and "We're going to eat you nice guys alive". Thank you for that wonderful voyage through time when the good Black men had the love of our Black women.
An essential album for all true jazz and R&B fans........2005-09-09
This all-time classic was one of 1988's truly superior R&B albums. At a time when most Urban R&B was losing its soulfulness and essence at an alarming rate, Baker (thankfully) refused to compromise her artistry and talents--in the end, she came up with a real winner in every way. "Just Because", "Lead Me Into Love", "Priceless", "Good Love" and the title track are timeless ballads from one of the greatest R&B and jazz DIVAS of all time.
Giving You The Best That I Got.......2005-08-06
Can we give this 10 stars?? Back when this album was released, I wasn't really into comparing artists' new works to previous works so didn't really know what to expect from Anita. It was interesting reading some previous posts about the pressure that she probably felt to somehow top 'Rapture'- her huge crossover album.
Well, in my opinion, the two albums tied! Both are "no skipping required" discs and it's funny to look back on how the QUALITY of music was the standard back then vs now when you could spend up to $20 for one cd and find maybe 3/4 good songs on a 17 track disc.
GYTBIG is just sheer listening perfection & pleasure for me. (Also give props to the inimitable Perry Sisters as Anita's backing singers!!! A true match made in music heaven.) It's a complete love story from the opening refrain. I love all of the songs but favorites are: 'Priceless', 'Lead Me Into Love' & 'Just Because'.
If you're trying to build your collection, you will not be disappointed - this is truly one of the best r&b albums ever put together. It works on all levels: vocal production, music production even the song selection order..each songs just flows so perfectly into the next. If you get it, happy listening!
Diva To The Max -- Five Stars Is Not Enough !!.......2005-06-14
Anita Baker is well known in the circles of contemporary music and jazz music. I believe she is a musical genius. All you need to do is use your ears!!! Plus, look at her credits. For instance, this album features her as executive producer. The musicians chosen to work on this album are the cream of the crop.
This album in particular features many of Anita hits, and most of the songs are still played on the radio stations across the nation daily. "Lead Me Into Love" is a divine ballad. Anita reaches passion highs and lows in her vocals. The title song "Giving You The Best That I've Got" is a glorious rich ballad! "Good Love" is a passionate ballad. "Rules" is riddled with emotion and soul!! The finale "You Belong To Me" has Anita reaching into the raw corners of sensation.
Anita Baker's vocals are so easy to listen to. Her subtle and soulful vocals have very fine depth and passion. She brings pop, soul, jazz, and r&b together in her music. Anita Baker is the Ella Fitzgerald of this generation!

Only one good reason to buy this CD.......2006-04-21
This CD only has one redeeming quality and that is the inclusion of Paul Stookey's original recording of The Wedding Song...as for the rest of the music...just a waist of good CD space. I am normally much more forgiving on compilation recordings but ACK...save me now?????
I bought the CD for the one song which I absolutely HATE to have to do but this song is nearly impossible to find on CD so my money is not entirely waisted...........
An OK CD.......2006-02-03
This CD is OK and I did like the fact that
The Wedding Song is on it.
I also was glad to finally find on amazon
"A Song For My Son" for the mother groom dance and
"A Song For My Daughter" for our father bride dance.
I could get these songs as singles or on
The New Wedding Traditions Volume I CD
Thanks amazon.com
awesome!.......2002-09-15
It reminds me of why I love my husband so much and why I married him in the first place. Our love is from heaven and we beleive that God brought us together.
I also only bought it for The Wedding Song.......2002-08-02
Paul Stookey's The Wedding Song (There is Love) is one of the most beautiful, reverent, appropriate songs to play at your wedding, and I'm glad I finally found the original version of it. However, the rest is really bad. Just, bad. If I was less moral I would just search for the MP3.
Finally found it!.......2001-06-27
I have finally found the most elusive song. The Wedding Song(There is love) by Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul & Mary is a song I have been looking for in something other than vinyl for a long time. I havn't listened to the CD yet, but I know most of the songs, and they are good selections. If they weren't, I would buy it for the one track.

Chamber Wh()res Only .......2007-07-07
Coal Chamber have long called it quits for a while now and only the brave hearted dare tempt the ideal of a reunion. That said a plethora of new fans still seem to be surging onto the Chamber scene and buy up the short but ample discography of what the once mighty Coal Chamber had accomplished in its short run. This album is kind of the marking point of the demise of Coal Chamber and thus the first reason Chamber Wh()res will and must own this.
Truth be told this isn't all that bad of an album, If your a fan of pretty much everything Coal Chamber ever recorded. If you are a new Chamber fan looking to buy your first Chamber C.D. don't.. Either buy the self titled or Chamber Music(my personal favorite). The album it self is a collection of songs never before heard or released, rare remixes that really aren't all that much different from the originals except for new sounds heard here and there on the tracks and of course original versions of classic CC tracks. Oh and of course the live recording of the CC anthem Big Truck, Which is decent but quality is fairly rough.
In a simplistic no jazzy wording way of teling you, Only get this if you are a fan of Coal Chambers music. All others go listen to one of the three studio albums until your mind is warped into being a fan then buy this.
Please a weak piece.......2007-02-16
Buy their greatest hits or their first three albums pretty much. Dont bother with these B-Sides, which can be good if properlly chosen, mixed and such but man some gay songs on here, gay versions of good songs, good songs ive heard many times before on their first 3 albums and thats pretty much it. Not very worthy of my cd collection besides the Coal Chamber name on it and cool cover. Most certainly not a good showcase of CC's talent or their awsome music. Dont buy it and dont dare buy it as their first album u may be turned off completely.
Does NOT Give Coal Chamber their Dues!.......2006-02-02
There have been a few B-sides by this band floating around on soundtracks and whatnot and those few B-sides, "BLISTERS" in particular, are worth the purchase of this CD, but if your looking to the rest of the CD for validation you may come up short. The opening track and the only NEW track "HEADSTONES AND THE WALKING DEAD" is a decent track but to know it's the LAST original Coal Chamber song it's kinda a let down. The other B-sides like "WISHES" and "ANXIETY" are good but the real let down is the remixes which, in my opinion are not even remixes...They sound almost identical to the originals. The demo's for songs like "NOT LIVING" and "PIG" as well as "SWAY" and "UNSPOILED" are decent, the best demo cut being "LOCO" which has a lot more crunch to it. All and all it's nice to have the B-sides on one CD rather than spread out over a few soundtracks but if you think about it, the Bride of Chucky soundtrack (which boast the best B-side, BLISTERS) has quite a few other great songs by other kick @$$ bands so all and all that might be a better buy. It's just a little depressing to expect so much and get so little.
not how chamber should be remembered.......2006-01-01
the fact that this is the most likely the last 'original' album by coal chamber is a downer coz this shouldn't be the way to remember them by the releasing of b-sides and whatnot. now, i do like this cd. its actually good to have i guess all of their rare tracks in one place.
but i do take issue with some of this. for example, the first track. if you download it off the official roadrunner records site and just listen to it, you can't really tell what dez is saying. you understand the majority of it, with some parts leaving you scratching your head. its only here while reading the lyrics it gives you an idea that dez's ego is really kicking in and taking multiple potshots at his bandmates (at the time their future was up in the air and no one knew what was what). its disrespectful in a manner to use a coal chamber song as a "f**k you" to the people who made the music. also, its old music with dez's new vocal style...it just doesn't work.
then there the "remixes"...they can hardly be construed as remixes as there is barely anything there that is different. if anything most of the songs have tiny portions that are minutely different with the rest sounding like an album version. if anything, it's almost like a lord-alge remix, barely anything different but requiring a listen to both back to back to hear a difference. but there is a difference that you can hear, but not much. "el cu cuy" is an example of that, it just sounds like the album version with the beginning removed. now, the only one that truly sounds like a remix would be "sway" with guest vocals by jay gordon and ryan shuck of orgy. the "bradley" remix is not that great and i do deduct points coz it's an edit. imagine, an edit on an album with a p.a.
but, the remixes are listenable and good as long as you think of them as alternate versions, not remixes. the original version of "pig" sounds exactly like the album version...its weird. then you got the stuff that were soundtrack exclusives. you have the phenomanal original version of "not living" that was on 'strangeland'. its absolutely great. then theres "blisters" that was on 'bride of chucky'...again another great track.
then there's some unreleased stuff like 'anxiety', 'save yourself' that are pretty good. but i'm confused coz i knew about 'anxiety' since '97 or so before 'chamber music' came out. apparently it was on the loco single, but here in the booklet it says 'dark days outtake'. the live version of 'big truck' is nice but it bothers me that i don't know when it was recorded...but since its the last track before the demos, i imagine it was somewhat recent.
now the demos are not all that spectactular. its hard to listen to them and not draw a comparision to what ended up on the debut. it does make you appreciate the debut just a bit more and how it turned out coz if those songs weren't fine tuned, the demo versions are most likely what we would've had. an example is 'loco'...dez's vocals are no near as good as the debut. in fact, its dez's vocals that no more near as good on any of them...its almost as if getting dumped on the day of recording vocal tracks for the debut did him a favor. the music is great though. the one demo thats truly good is 'babbit'. why? coz we've never heard it before and there is nothing to compare it to. it stands on its own and it is great. in fact, the beginning is pretty good...it's pretty jaw-dropping.
in the end, when its over...its just a sad ending to what was a great band. especially when listening to demos...it's difficult to imagine the band recording them trying to get a record deal ended up going out with a whimper instead a bang. shame.
THe first track is funny!.......2004-09-08
The first track is hilarious because Dez totally ran down his band members on a track THEY PLAYED ON!!!(Headstones and walking dead) THAT'S HILARIOUS!!!! To the person who said they are on hiatus. They aren't on hiatus. They are broke up,and they ain't comin' back (especially after track 1).At least Dez is still making kick @$$ music with Devil Driver.

A Splendid Souvenir to Remember a Spectacular Performance!.......2003-10-30
Having been fortunate to have seen the English National Opera's production in 1988 of "Orpheus" with Wilson and Pountney's outrageously naughty English text, this highlight CD serves as an audio souvenir. Too bad the ENO didn't have the foresight to film the production-would have made a great DVD. The CD booklet does have a few photos of the sets designed by Gerald Scarfe (who also designed Pink Floyd's "The Wall" album artwork) so you get a taste, combined with the CD selections, of what the production was like.
god moves in a peculiar way.........i am god.............2002-01-17
Offenbach is great anyhow, but this recording is riotous. The translation into English is first-rate, really funny stuff, and the singing is pretty good, too. Very worthwhile.
Orpheus in the Underworld.......2000-03-17
The rewritten lyrics, in English, are some of the wittiest and wicked in operetta. Wilson and Pountney have recaptured the spirit of naughtiness, not a small accomplishment in our licentious times. Though delighted to have the highlights, I wished a CD set or video of the full production were available.
Excerpts.......1999-12-23
This is a collection of excerpts. It is in English and is quite good. The performance of the entire operetta has been discontinued and it is a pity.
Highlights or total Opera?.......1999-11-01
I would like to know if this is highlights from the opera or the total opera.

Probably The Best Jazz CD I Have Ever Heard.......................2006-09-29
I have a very large jazz collection and out of all of the cd's this is in my opinion the best what makes this cd so good is that not only is the songs are played well with incredible saxophone technique it mixes both smooth jazz and straight-ahead jazz which makes this cd appeal to not only fans of musicians like Boney james, richard elliot, steve cole , and kirk whalum but also to fans straight-ahead jazz and bebop such as cannonball adderley, bobby watson and john coltrane I think anyone who likes jazz should get this cd no matter what style of jazz you like you will like this cd.
pamela martin jazlover.......2005-10-13
i purchased this cd at a resale cd shop and could not believe that someone actually gave it up. it contains some of the best music that i have ever heard. it is gerald albright at his best.not the typical smooth jazz that you hear on the radio, but rich ,soothing music.
Mr. Albright at his best.......2005-07-03
Here is something in this modern commerical laden music world that is worth ones time to listen to. Though is is considered modern by all accounts, there is music that says Jazz contained within. Not too much mimicking of pop standards, but music which can stand on it's own two feet, and a joy to listen to.
Alas this is the only full Jazz CD to be recorded by this very talented musician. I do not know why his style which is so very apparent on this CD is only mildly displayed on his later works but this CD "Giving Myself to You" is a good addition to any Jazz collection.
One Hot Album.......2002-03-05
This is my favorite Albright album! Gerald moves a few steps to the left of his "funky" style, with this slightly edgy and more mainstream jazz album. Featuring such greats as Stanley Clarke, George Duke, Harvey Mason, Joe Sample and more, it runs the gambit of styles, from samba, to seven/four, to straight ahead swing, to soulful ballad, to contemporary funky shuffle, to ... well, you just gotta get this disc. It'll make you smile, make you sad, make you want t'dance, make you long to hold someone special, as you listen by candle light.
Gerald is one amazing musician and this is one very good CD!
A great piece of work from a talented musician.......1998-07-30
Gerald Albright is a terrific artist, and this CD really shows him at his best. It is approachable even to new fans of jazz, yet should be interesting to more sophisticated listeners. The latin numbers are great, and Lucky 7 is something altogether different with its 7/8 meter. One of my favorite CDs.

Good album, curious production.......2006-07-25
Peach plays a number of styles, some becomming popular in the British musical venacular, one being Nu New Wave as heard on Track #7, Signpost in the Sea. It's an appealing update of the new wave genre with a bit more balls and nowhere as twee on the vocals..
The King Crimson cover, Catfood is an interesting choice that reminds me of something Robert Fripp might have done in his 80s solo career; the rock part, not the soundscapes.
In general there's a good deal of rock styles from the semi-tech sounds of Naked to the 90s-esque thud rock of "You Lied".
The music, performance and overall sound are very enjoyable to listen, if a bit dizzying at the shifts of eras, styles and identity, but for me that is also Peach's endearing quality. Based on these aspects the album is a solid "4".
So why a "3" for the review? In part because I was listening to some pretty intense music, Explosions in the Sky, actually, and I noticed that the production of Peach's Giving Birth to a Stone was a bit confusing and lacking in identity.
The album seems incapable of making up it's mind if it's a "lo-fi" kind of feel, which it is not by any means although it sounds decidedly dressed down on several tracks. Take "Don't Make Me Your God" followed by "Peach". It is a sonic identety crises, let alone like listening to something like Bloc Party followed by a better sounding NiN track.
As I said, it's not the change of pace or attitude, it's the production, or if not the production a questionable mastering job.
The sound of the album gets in the way for me. It calls attention to tracks, sometimes those nowhere as good, as in the example above.
That said, if you like Tool you're probably giving consideration to Peach and quite honestly, it IS a good album that perhaps I have a bit of technical issues with. It is very possible it won't be something many people pay attention to, I admit to being a snit to a degree, but when you have the resources available to a band like Peach it seems kind of wrong not to do everything 100%. Then again, I could be totally wrong about my conceptions which is why I still highly reccomend Giving Birth to a Stone.
A creative and thoughtful art rock album from start to finish........2006-05-11
It's a really wonderful thing that this album, with publicity from friends and tourmates Tool, got its chance at resurrection. Lyrically, it's as interpersonally insightful as Tool's Undertow, and the vocals work rather well as a sort of breathy alternative to the more melodic voices of other art rockers. The metallic bass lines and heavy drum beats both seem to make the comparisons between this band and Tool at least somewhat fair. Certainly, Peach share their intelligence and good taste.
From the opening track, "Spasm", this CD fights--literally--for your attention. Perhaps the best thing about Giving Birth to a Stone, though, is its odd duality from the outset: it is both lightheartedly enjoyable and easily understood, but it is also very deep and thoughtful and upon only a few listens you'll probably begin to take the lyrics very seriously if you enjoy dissecting song meanings. The King Crimson cover, "Catfood", is a good example of this trait (that King Crimson also embodies), immediately accessible for its ubiquitous bassline and darkly comic lyrics, yet very brooding and frightening upon deeper contemplation.
This CD presents something newer and deeper with each listen. A smart, thoughtful masterpiece, those of us who are latecomers to Peach should be very grateful that this ablum was brought back to the forefront, at least for a while. If you appreciate rock music that is heavy, brooding, and somewhat tongue-in-cheek, check this out.
NOTE: This listing is currently much cheaper than the identical re-release which refers to the same band under the name Peach gb for clarification purposes. Take that into account before you purchase either.
Amazing and underrated.......2005-08-28
I bought this CD because I'm a huge Tool fan. Since Justin Chancellor played in Peach before he joined Tool, I thought I'd give it a shot. I love every single song on this album. I simply love the riffs and the basslines. The lyrics are great, and you'll find som similarities to Tool/A Perfect Circle here (Both bands have covered songs from this album). The gitar is intense and soothing at the same time. I recomend this album for everyone that likes rock/heavy metal, and wants something more than a scream vocal and headbanging (not that there's anything wrong with that).
Better Than Tool, A Perfect Circle, etc........2005-06-19
Okay, Chancellor is no Maynard, but he's probably the most talented musician (musician, not singer) to become a part of the Tool project. This album proves it. It seems Tool actually dumbed him down a bit, because Peach's Giving Birth To A Stone is more excellent than anything Tool or A Perfect Circle has released. Even their cover of King Crimson's "Cat Food" is awesome.
Somehow, their music is both lighter and darker than that of Tool, and the vocals suit it well. Maynard is a great singer, but his vocals do not always suit the mood that Tool's music is trying to create. Maynard seems much more suited to A Perfect Circle, but that band lacks Chancellor's musical capability, so...
Anyhow, with all the comparisons, this band is not Tool. This band is Tool with more talent and a British accent.

Marlo Thomas's reasons for waiting to follow up 1972's landmark feminism-for-kids disc Free to be You and Me remain her own, but Thanks & Giving: All Year Long comes not a second too late, suffusing both its grown-up listeners and the under-10 crowd with the same sit-up-straight-but-laugh-hard spirit of its predecessor. The message has changed--generosity and giving get the treatment this go-round--but the thrill remains the same. Here you've found a disc that folds many of your still-developing parental speeches into easily swallowed, often hilarious soundbites. Credit Hollywood, whose heavy hitters Jennifer Aniston, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Robin Williams pitch in with stories and rhymes (studded by musical breaks from Sheryl Crow, Jimmy Buffett, and others). Or credit Thomas, who produced and performed extensively, misstepping only on an awkward duet with Uncle Kracker. Either way, you get a disc whose message and MO makes sense for everybody in the family, and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital gets 100 percent of the royalties. --Tammy La Gorce
Album Description
The publication of Marlo Thomas' forthcoming anthology for children, Thanks and Giving All Year Long (Simon & Schuster), was largely inspired by cherished memories of Thanksgiving, a holiday that, she notes, "brings together two great ideas-thanks and giving-that we can celebrate every day of the year." The book collects uplifting stories, poems and pictures from acclaimed writers, illustrators, and celebrities, and Rhino's CD companion volume compiles songs and spoken word selections from a host of musicians and notables.

This is a great cd! .......2006-03-03
I have reccommended this cd to all my mom friends! Kids love it- adults dont' feel compelled to rip their ears off while listening- ok I actually enjoy it! It's a kids cd and I look forward to singing along with my kids. The stories are wonderful too... This will make a great gift for the family who has everything...
The BEST fun and teaches thanks.......2006-01-01
I bought this as a gift for my daughter's friend and also got one for her for Christmas. I couldn't wait to hear it, since I got it in November. I have "Free To Be..." and I was so delighted with this CD. The stories are on target, and the songs are also funny, cute, sweet, telling, etc. In one week, we've listened to the CD in the car and in the house at least 20 times. It's FABULOUS. My daughter loves the 2nd and third track. I love the cast of characters and all they offer to the kids. The proceeds go to Childrens Hospital, a worthwhile cause.
Leftist Liberal Gobbly Gook.......2005-11-14
This CD has one objective - push a leftist agenda. It's themes are awash in "class struggles" and pushes everything from the perspective of the persecuted poor. It even has a short piece on considering the food's point of view when eating meat. This is the worst sort of leftist propaganda trash, and we do our children no favors by bashing everything and everyone that might not be one of the downtrodden...
This is great!.......2005-03-18
It's great for kids AND adults - very entertaining. I'm so glad I bought this cd for my daughter.
Uncle Kracker song is the best on album!.......2005-02-06
"Or credit Thomas, who produced and performed extensively, misstepping only on an awkward duet with Uncle Kracker."
Funny... the Uncle Kracker song is one of the most popular songs on XM Kids radio station, and the song that attracted me to the album. The song is great--as suggested by other user reviews. Too bad the Amazon.com staff review couldn't recognize it.

An unfortunate CD release.......2006-07-24
While this 13-track original score is largely incomplete and (as many have commented) full of the more useless cues; stuff we could do without, there is a 34-track bootleg floating around. I don't know how to get a hold of it, but it's circulating through the internet, giving David Newman the true audio release he deserved for one of his best musical efforts.
Pointless.......2005-10-06
Why have a soundtrack that has all of the songs people don't care about? Basically this cd has all the background music that you never notice and quite frankly don't care about. Most of you who want to buy this cd is the same reason why you would buy any other, because it has one or two (very rarely three) songs that you want to get. The song that you are probably looking for is when the three of them with the baby are walking to the peak (where they ride in the ice caves) togather. It's called "Send Me On My Way" by Rusted Root. Hope that helps
I LOVE ICE AGE!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-07-30
I LOVE THIS MOVIE WITH A PASSION!!!! THE SOUND TRACK IS 2 TIMES AS GOOD!!!! SID STEALS THE WHOLE MOVIE, ALSO THE DODOS!!!!!!!!!!I LOOOOOVE ICE AGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND YOU ALL SHOULD BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks.......2004-04-30
I would like to thank everyone for listing the song Send me on my way. I was specifically looking for this song and did expect it to be on the CD. So thank you all for looking out for the other people interested.
Song not on CD.......2004-04-26
To those of you interested in this CD in lieu of finding the "songs with lyrics" in the movie ICE AGE, got bad news for you. They are NOT here! I really do hate it when a soundtrack is put out for a movie and they don't include the best or features songs in the movie. Anyway, the song that pretty much everyone wants when Manny, Sid, Diego and the baby are together and walking towards Half Peak is called "Send Me On My Way" by Rusted Root. It is on their latest album "When I Woke". Put Rusted Root in the Amazon search engine and you should find it. Hope this helps those looking for this song.

Reba the redheaded rein dear delivers a mixed bag of cheer on her new holiday record. Secret of Giving gets off to a great start with "This Is My Prayer for You," an upbeat, fairly unvarnished country tune with a lively little fiddle break. But unless you're a full-on Reba fan, it's pretty much downhill sledding from there as McEntire falls back on the Nashville formula for many of the originals penned for the album. While her voice is always in good form--and she suggests Brenda Lee and Loretta Lynn in "I Saw Mama Kissing Santa Claus"--there are too many predictable chord progressions and decorative shadings in songs such as "Santa Claus Is Coming Back to Town," a heartbreak Christmas song. What she needs is more tunes like the closing cut and the title track, a sparsely arranged acoustic number that avoids maudlin sentiments and faux cheer. No amount of children singing ("The Angels Sang") or pretty playing can get her out of the deep ruts that Nashville has got most of its stars stuck in these days. --Martin Keller

Heart, Soul, and Holiday.......2006-11-28
Between this album and Reba's first Christmas album, "Merry Christmas to You," you have all you need for the holidays! The first album has more traditional Christmas favorites, and this one has a couple with a lot of great new material that captures the true spirit of the holiday.
1. This is My Prayer for You--This is a great way to start off the album. With a great country up-tempo, it may not have snow and sleigh bells, but it does offer the hope for a season filled with joy, peace, and love.
2. I Saw Mama Kissing Santa Claus--A Christmas favorite that Reba's voice is perfect for; very enjoyable song!
3. One Child, One Day--An upbeat country tune that celebrates the true meaning of Christmas--Christ coming into the world!
4. Mary, Did You Know?--This has always been a favorite song of mine, and Reba's voice is PERFECT for it. It really helps you to reflect on not only the significance of Christmas from the lens of Christ's birth, but also from Mary's courage in saying "yes" to God and allowing all of this to happen.
5. Up on the Housetop--Another Christmas favorite with a really upbeat tempo that is a lot of fun to listen to!
6. The Angels Sang--Another great song that focuses on the true meaning of the Christmas season....and the children's chorus is a nice touch!
7. Santa Claus is Coming Back to Town--The saddest song on the album, telling the story of a divorced couple and the mother who decides to let her ex-husband play Santa Claus for the kids despite how hard it will be on her to have him there. While it may not be the most uplifting song in the world, Reba's voice is crisp, clear, and beautiful as always and it captures the reality of a lot of family situations around the country. Beautiful.
8. The Secret of Giving--Perhaps the most "un-Christmas" song on the album in tone, but it's another song that captures the true spirit of the season----giving from the heart!!
9. This Christmas--Probably my favorite song on the CD. This song really captures three big things about the season: 1) The courage of the Wise Men to seek the Christ child despite the fact that "logic told them it was crazy," 2) Mary's courage in facing the long, winding road ahead of her, and 3) the love Christ felt for the world even though he came into it knowing people would not believe him. Wonderful.
10. 'Til the Season Comes 'Round Again--The best way to end the album! The first song on the CD was a great opener, and with this song, it all comes to a nice, complete circle. This beautiful lyrical song focuses on the beauty of having family and friends around you during the holiday, and the hope that we can all retain that love through the new year...until the season comes around again! "One night, holy and bright, shining with love from our hearts! By a warm fire, let's lift our heads high, and be thankful we're here until this time next year."
This album has faced a lot of criticism on here because it does not have a lot of traditional Christmas carols. While I love the traditional Christmas carols as much as the next guy, I am so grateful to have a Christmas album that is so full in faith, hope, and love. Reba McEntire delivers another masterful work with ten songs that in different ways all capture the true spirit of the Christmas season, and I find it to be very inspiring. Her voice is as wonderful and beautiful as always, adding her special touch (her own brand of holiday magic!) to a collection I will cherish forever.
And I will certainly be pulling this one out all season long and I will do the same "when the season comes around again!"
SCARY STUFF FROM REBA; SHE'S CROSSEYED!!.......2005-11-15
She's crosseyed on the CD cover and she must also have been crosseyed when she picked out the songs for what is supposedly a Christmas CD! That's a laugh.
WITH CHRISTMAS COMING, BEWARE OF THIS CD!!!.......2005-11-08
You really have to like Reba in order to get this CD. Its really awful. More pop ditties with a couple of Christmas classics thrown in there for good measure. This is one of the worst CDs I have ever heard in my life. If you want to hear Reba do Christmas get her first Christmas CD "Merry Christmas to You" because that one, while not outstanding by any means, at least has some Christmas sounds on it. This one does not.
THE MUSIC HERE IS NO DIFFERENT THAN ON ANY SECULAR CD!.......2005-11-01
This CD, a supposed Christmas CD, im most cases does not resemble anything Christmas at all except the theme of the songs. The production values and content here are NOT CHRISTMAS! I'm going to listen to "Bing Crosby's White Christmas" for a taste of what REAL CHRISTMAS music is!! I'm sorry Reba.
I LOVE CHRISTMAS MUSIC BUT THIS CD MISSED.......2005-10-29
I love Reba's first Christmas CD! But her second one (this one), misses the mark on most counts. When the sounds of the season come on at Christmas I want to hear sleigh bells and chimes and something that makes me feel like its snowing outside (even if it isn't)so that I can curl up by a warm fireplace and watch the Christmas lights glow in the dark with beautiful music in the background. This CD does not do that for me, unfortunately.

Album Description
On his new record, "Giving Up the Ghost", Robert Walter has added a new talent to his recording lineup. Known for his work with such jazz/soul/funk giants as Mike Clark of Herbie Hancock's Headhunters, legendary James Brown and P-Funk sideman and songwriter, Fred Wesley, and George Porter of the Meters, this time out Walter enlisted another player for his latest album -- the studio. "I collect records. I'm into recordings," says Walter. "From doing home recordings, I started experimenting with different sounds, and I decided I wanted to do something more interesting than just record the band. On this album, I tried using the studio as an instrument. It's involved in the music and an important part of making this record what it is. I move things around, change elements. On some tracks, there's no soloing at all, and all of the solos are downplayed in favor of creating a mood, a sonic texture." Joined by Joe Russo and George Sluppick on drums; Greyboy Allstar Chris Stillwell and Black-Eyed Pea Mike Fratantuno on bass; Will Bernard (of TJ Kirk fame) on guitar; percussionist Chuck Prada, and long-time partner Cochemea Gastelum on alto sax and various woodwinds, Walter explores new territory, incorporating elements of electronic music and dub reggae into his traditional R&B and jazz roots, all powered by the flavor of his vintage Fender Rhodes and Hammond B-3 organ. The result is a new hybrid that's distinctly Robert Walter, which is to say, the sound combines just about every form of music into a driving, syncopated groove that will move fans of jazz, soul, blues, roots rock and, yes, those ever-in-motion jam band dance fanatics.
Customer Reviews:
Um...Robert?.......2005-11-08
I can't possibly hate on Mr. Walter in these musically depraved times, but uh yeah, Giving Up The Ghost kind of sums it up. The Ghost being the funk that Mr. Walter was helping to keep alive. The 'Giving Up' on keeping it real and organic, in favor of bowing to the Yamaha's eletronic sounds and effects.
Robert's beauty is Rhodes, Clavinet, electric paino etc - stretching out in the studio with a wall of keys in front of him, freaking on each one like a mad scientist. Ain't no need for this dude to synthesize.
This album isn't all bad. The grooves are tight and the rhythm usually has bottom. But I'd definitely recommend starting at the 1st 20th Congress Album or his first ever solo record with Gary Bartz.
The pure funk . . ........2005-01-30
. . . one is almost tempted to say the "ur-funk."
What if one could produce the essence of funk? What would it sound like? My own view, arrived at through not a little struggle, is that it would sound exactly like Robert Walter's 20th Congress disc, Giving up the Ghost.
When I say "not a little struggle," I'm confessing a ham-handedness toward this music that borders on incomprehensible. Bottom line: I don't generally like funk. It's not the music I would naturally gravitate toward. More than that: It's music I would normally avoid.
Nevertheless, intrepid sampler of varieties of musical soundscapes that I am, I felt obligated to explore funk. Yes, I'd heard Karl Denson, the Greyboy Allstars, and some others. But I'd never seemed to fully connect. And, truth to tell, I didn't initially with this disc either. I bought it, listened to it, disdained it, set it on the shelf, and only came back to it just recently.
And was blown away by it.
Whereas I just couldn't access its pure funkadelic grooves the first several listens, somehow, serendipitously, I COULD when I came back to it. Maybe I had a few too many. Maybe I'd slipped into some maudlin judgment-suspension mode. (Yes, I'd had a few too many.)
But I really don't think that was it. By some near-miracle of suspended suspicion, I'd achieved proper hermeneutic access: I could listen to this marvelous music without prejudice, without preconditioned bias. And I thereby discovered its magnificence.
Make no mistake. Robert Walter is a man who knows his antecedents: Melvin Sparks, Fred Wesley, and Mike Clark. That he has transmuted their collective influence into something uniquely and brilliantly his own proves his worth as the reigning funkmeister.
Ignore at your peril.
Pretty Good.......2004-04-05
It grows on ya...If you don't like it at first give it a few spins. Real catchy melodies and great solos. Keep on groovin' Robert.
Give it up for Robert Walters.......2003-11-13
While listen to Robert Walter's latest CD, I have to keep checking to make sure it's him. When listen to "Bygones Be", I think I have my Greyboy All-Stars's CD in (it sounds like Karl Denson playing the flute). "Bet" sounds like it should be on a Soulive CD. "Sacred Church" makes me feel like I'm listening to a gospel group. Occasionally, I felt like I was listen to a Todd Rundren album. Still, all the songs are strong and flow well. My favorite is "Aquafresh". The only songs I don't care for are "Convex + Concave" (I know it's a hard song to play because each hand is doing something different, but I just don't like the effects of the keyboard. It sounds kind of creepy-like something Magazine would play-and Robert Walters is much better than David Formula of Magazine) and "Circle Limit"-because of the keyboard sound. Still, Robert jams on the keyboards. I also struggled to try in figure out whether I was listening to a guitar riff or a keyboard riff on "Dump Truck". All and all, I'm in awe of his sound (he's got a great backing band with Cochemea Gaselum and Chris Stillwell). The only keyboard player that blows Robert Walters away is Jools Holland, but he makes the mistake of trying to sing. If you like Robert Walter's, buy this CD-it might be his best.
