Hap Palmer may be best known for his vocal contributions to the hugely popular Baby Songs video series, but parents of 2- to 5-year-olds, particularly those with a sturdier than average educational bent, will find a lot to love on Early Childhood Classics: Old Favorites with a New Twist. This release rids itself of tiresome attempts to turn performances of simple songs like "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" into minor personal masterpieces and instead injects its de rigueur dose of creativity directly into familiar lyrics. For instance, while there's the usual cow and pig on Old MacDonald's farm, we're also introduced to Henrietta's House, where there's a cat, Zebediah's zoo with its tiger, and the puppy in Pamelina's pet shop. Similarly, instead of the usual "Pat-a-Cake" cliffhanger, where the cake's put in the oven and that's all she wrote, we get to hear the ding-ding-ding when it's done and layer on the frosting. The sequence of songs is repeated instrumentally after Palmer's interpretations to allow for sing-alongs and the dreaming up of more new lyrics--a useful device for caregivers who think like teachers (those who don't, though, can make use of clever movement and activity suggestions in the liner notes). Each song's wordplay and simple rhymes are catchy enough to fall into the can't-fail category when it comes to enhancing vocabulary, phonics, and vocabulary skills, and the surprise lyrics lend themselves nicely to attentive listening. Early Childhood Classics delivers old-fashioned fun in a satisfyingly unsplashy way. --Tammy La Gorce
Album Description
Here is a joyful collection of all time favorite activity songs for young children. Hap Palmer's unique renditions preserve the charm and simplicity of traditional songs while adding new, original lyrics and melodies to extend and enrich the familiar classics.
The simplicity and repetition of these songs guarantee active participation by encouraging children to sing and move with the music. While having fun and participating actively, children develop motor and musical skills and learn about animals, counting, identification of body parts, and phonics. As children sing along, responding to the imagery and humor of the lyrics, reading readiness is also enhanced. Alliteration and rhyme develop a child's ear for the sounds of language - an important pre-reading skill.
These songs are developmentally appropriate for the very young child - infant to 5 years. However, the familiar melodies and contemporary arrangements also elicit surprisingly gusty participation from first and second grade students. A variety of musical styles adds new life to well known songs with swing, blue grass, country, classical, rock, pop, and blues arrangements.
Fifteen songs are presented with vocal interpretation. The sequence is then repeated instrumentally providing opportunities for singing along and creating new lyrics using children's ideas. The instrumental selections also familiarize children with the sounds of a variety of musical instruments including piano, bass, drums, guitar, violin, viola, cello, trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn, saxophone, flute, English horn, accordion, and a variety of percussion instruments such as conga drums, bougaraboo drum, ouiro, shaker, wood block and tambourine.
The instrumental versions of each song can be used in the following ways:
1. After children have learned words with the vocal version, they can sing along hearing only the music.
2. Children can create their own lyrics and sing the song using their ideas.
3. The music can accompany sessions in movement exploration and creative movement.
Suggestions for activities and variations are not limited to those presented in this guide book. There are endless possibilities awaiting your creative impulse.

Early Childhood Classics - Old Favorites With A New Twist.......2007-05-26
We listen to this CD almost evry day while driving around in the car. My daughter loves singing the songs!!! They are all good. Well worth the money!!
One of the best young children's CDs!.......2006-02-24
My almost 4 year old is a huge Hap Palmer fan, and it's catching on to me. Just listen to one of his CDs, and you'll understand. This one in particular is great. I love how he makes beloved children songs even better. I never thought I'd be just as happy to hear a children's CD as one of my own, but this is so catchy, and it is priceless hearing my young daughter singing along to the words! It's great for her memory skills, remembering and singing to all the songs, and it's great for her learning rhyme and rhythm. The lyrics he adds are sooo fun and cathy and sweet. I love this guy!
Great Kid Tunes.......2006-02-18
I bought this for my daughter, who is two, and my older kids love it as much as she does. Easy to remember lyrics and catchy tunes make this a great cd to listen to.
Great music, great twist.......2005-10-28
If standard kid's tunes play in your house or car all day long, you will love this refreshing cd and your kid's won't miss a beat. I don't understand the 2 star review. If you don't like something, that's fine. But the reviewer's logic is very skewed in that they said it didn't meet their expectations, even though 1) The cd was a gift, and 2) The title of the cd tells you that it's not an album of "to-the-letter" standards. So if you don't like the music or your child doesn't like it, fine. But don't rate it down because you had ridiculous expectations from something you didn't even want or buy. If you are open-minded and enjoy good, fun, music you will love this. There is varied musical accompaniment and Hap sings great and truly seems to feel the music (unlike most performers of children's standards). Of course, the ultimate critic is the child. My daughter LOVES this cd (she's 21 months old now and has been listening to it since 12 months). Again, if you want standard kid songs, you may be disappointed with this because the music and words are different (usually, each song starts in a traditional manner but then non-standard lyrics and music follow). But if you want a twist without leaving the traditional songs altogether, buy this. I don't think you will be disappointed.
A favorite at library storytime.......2005-10-19
I'm a children's librarian in Illinois and this cd has become one I use at almost every storytime. I especially love "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" because it contains a verse inserted by Hap Palmer which allows me to introduce Shakespeare to the tiniest child. He uses a line from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" -- "silver bow new bent in heaven" to describe the moon. I have entire families singing along, learning a famous quotation painlessly! And it's a beautiful, calming song to use at the end of a storytime. Parents and kids love it!

Inspirational southern Gospel.......2004-12-28
The Oak Ridge Boys can sing gospel like no other group can, and their 'original' lineup proves it on this set of tracks. Highly enjoyable and inspirational!!!
The Original Oak Ridge Boys at Their Very Best!.......2004-07-26
This collection of southern gospel classics is a re-release of the Oak Ridge Boys' "On The Sunny Banks" project, recorded in the early 1960's, well before the group's cross-over into country music. Personnel at the time these tracks were laid down included the great Smitty Gatlin (lead), Willie Wynn (tenor), William Lee Golden (baritone), Herman Harper (bass) and Tommy Fairchild (piano).
The group had been known as the Oak Ridge Boys for a relatively short period of time when these songs were released. Smitty Gatlin purchased the name "Oak Ridge Quartet" from the legendary Wally Fowler in the late 1950's, then changed it to reflect the new lineup. As fans of Southern Gospel know, Willie Wynn was one of the industry's leading tenor singers, and the late Herman Harper went on to create the premier talent management agency that still bears his name. Incidentally, contemporary Oaks fans may be interested to know that this project marked William Lee Golden's debut with the group, resulting in one of the longest tenures in either gospel or country music.
This CD contains positively stellar material from some of the greatest writers in southern gospel -- Dottie Rambo, Gov. Jimmie Davis, and Smitty Gatlin himself, performing his very own "When I Lay My Burdens Down Someday". This one is solid gold. Don't miss it!

Michael, his music and friendship.......2006-03-19
I met Michael during the 1980s when he traveled extensively on AIDS projects and conferences, speaking engagements and also with the FLIRTATIONS. I spent twenty-six years as a massage therapist, and on numerous times that he flew into Dallas-Fort Worth, he would call and ask for an appointment. Not only was he a kind and creative and bright spirit, but he always loved my personal and caring massages. As with all win/win situations, I in turn found a creative mind, clever, genuine and always a sparkle about his life. Along with enjoying his music the rest of my life, I'll always cherish the memories of time spent in his presence.
flawed but still..........2002-08-31
The FLIRTATIONS (Jon Arterton, Michael Callen, Aurelio Font, TJ Myers, and Cliff Townsend) were an openly-gay acapella quartet in 1990 when they released this album, and it is a charming but uneven effort. The singers are obviously talented, and their material ranges from doo-wop to a gospel sound. Some of the tracks are nothing less than delightful -- a gay version of "Surfin' USA" that works better than it seems like it would, and the gentle power of pride in songs like "Everything Possible" and "Something Inside So Strong." Yet some of the tracks sound a bit amateurish, maybe a little sloppy. But all in all, it's very moving and important, and also a lot of fun. And it's one of the few recordings of Michael Callen's remarkable voice and charisma.
Fabulous!.......2000-10-14
This has become my favorite CD after rediscovering the Flirtations a few weeks ago. The songs are all worth listening to over and over again. I thought I wouldn't enjoy it because I don't ever listen to a capella, but they are all so talented that I'm sure instruments would take away from their great sound. The Flirtations should also be hailed for their activism and their ability to mix humor with serious social messages. Anyway, this is a great CD, and I strongly recommend it. Also check out their other CDs, if you get the chance!
Fun, funny a cappella!.......1999-08-31
This cd is one that every a cappella-lover should have in their collection. With lovely ballads (like Breaths and Wallflower), classics (Blue Moon and Lida Rose), and fast or funny tunes (Santa Maria and The Flirt Song), this one has something that everyone will like. Two songs, Everything Possible and On Children, will touch your heart - they're gorgeous! The Flirtations obviously had fun making this one, and it's a great, harmony-packed group of songs - you won't regret getting it.

A classic Mac Wiseman album from 1966 (with country band).......2007-01-02
Playing Time - 40:55 -- With over 50 years in business, Rural Rhythm Records has built a catalog that connects many dots from past to present. Since its 1955 creation, Rural Rhythm has released hundreds of classic performances by many legendary bluegrass and old-time musicians such as J.E. Mainer, Don Reno, Red Smiley, Mac Wiseman, Vassar Clements, Hylo Brown, Bill Harrell, Jim Eanes, and many others. This album is part of that archival catalog. The label owes its Arcadia, California start to Uncle Jim O'Neal whose vision was to release the music of many top bluegrass and old-time musicians in the 1950-70s, seeking success where Starday had failed by producing records of limited appeal by lesser known, albeit talented, musicians.
Mac Wiseman was born on May 23, 1925. He hails from Crimora, Virginia but lives on Percy Priest Lake, near Nashville. He was born in 1925, the same year the Grand Ole Opry started. In 1944, Mac began his career as a DJ in in Harrisonburg, Virginia. In 1946, he worked with Molly O'Day, then in 1948 an original member of Flatt and Scruggs' Foggy Mountain Boys, and then in 1949 with Bill Monroe. From 1952-1956, Mac with his band "The Country Boys" recorded several hits for Dot Records including "Jimmy Brown the Newsboy," "Love Letters in the Sand," "The Ballad of Davy Crockett." From 1957-1963, he was an A & R man (Artists and Repertoire) for Dot Records and ran the company's country-music department. While at Dot, he was instrumental in the success of Pat Boone's career. It was Mac who suggested that Pat record the song "Love Letters in the Sand" which became a smash hit for the young singer. In 1958, Mac one of the founders of the Country Music Association (CMA) and its first secretary. In 1965, he performed at the first bluegrass festival in Fincastle, Virginia. In 1966, Mac managed WWVA Jamboree in Wheeling, West Virginia. That was the year that he recorded this album for Uncle Jim's Rural Rhythm Records. He was in fine country voice for songs that also include some uncredited accompaniment with drums, jew's harp, Dobro, harmonica, autoharp, electric bass, and others.
In more recent time, Mac's kept busy with music. In 1990, he was elected president of R.O.P.E. (Reunion of Professional Entertainers) in Nashville. One of the goals of the organization is to build a retirement home for country music entertainers. In 1991, he worked at the revived Old Dominion Barn Dance, Richmond, Virginia.
In 1992, he worked at the Willie Nelson Theatre in Branson, Missouri. In 1993, Mac was inducted into the IBMA's Hall of Honor. In 1997, he recorded with "The Groove Grass Boyz." In 2001, Wiseman recorded a duet with his old friend Johnny Cash: "When It's Reveille Time in Heaven."
Songcarriers and musicologists would be particularly interested in this type of archival material. Don't expect to hear vocal harmonies, elaborate arrangements or the same level of clarion studio recording quality we hear today. Rather, just enjoy and relive a classic country sound of yesteryear. Most of the cuts span about 2 minutes apiece. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

I First heard Mac Wiseman when I was Eight years old (It was this very recording that I heard, on an old 8-track tape), and from that moment, I was hooked. I'm 15 now, but enough about me. This is a great album! Mac Wiseman has a warm tenor voice that cannot be equaled, even by the great opera tenors. Plus this album has some great country favorites such as I SAW YOUR FACE IN THE MOON, ROVING GAMBLER, MIDNIGHT SPECIAL, WRECK OF THE OLD '97, and others. This CD is a MUST for any True country fan!

Immeasurably wealthy body of familiar and not so familiar tunes .......2007-01-02
With over 50 years in business, Rural Rhythm Records has built a catalog that connects many dots from past to present. Mainer, Don Reno, Red Smiley, Mac Wiseman, Vassar Clements, Hylo Brown, Bill Harrell, Jim Eanes, and many others. This album is part of that archival catalog. Producer Lee Sutton was the visionary who captured the music of the legendary J.E. Mainer, an "unabashed, unreconstructed, unapologetic old-time musician," according to one of Richard Spottswood's reviews in an early issue of Bluegrass Unlimited magazine. Although he had recorded earlier, Mainer's output had dropped off in the 50s and early-60s. Beginning in 1967, twenty volumes of his music were released over the course of just a few years. In Rural Rhythm's extensive J.E. Mainer archive, Volume 20 (RR-250) has material drawn from his earlier albums, but they also included alternate takes and were put out in stereo. They also had his down-home fiddling, and his singing and banjo work impart more good-time hilarity than anyone since Uncle Dave Macon. We sincerely appreciate the legacy that Uncle Jim, producer Lee Sutton, and musician J. E. Mainer have left us. Uncle Jim had the foresight to realize he was recording an important old-time musician whose years were limited and whose musicianship was intact. An immeasurably wealthy body of familiar and not so familiar tunes.
Mainer's earlier releases were unquestionably his best. He sang and played fiddle. He worked with many of the same personnel who had recorded on King and Arhoolie. Sound quality was good. Later, quantity seemed to become the main goal although all of the sessions produced some good music. Others who worked with J.E. included Earl Cheek (bass), Jerry Cheek washboard), Bill Deaton (guitar), Danny Milhon (Dobro), and Morris Herbert (banjo, vocals) who eventually came to be featured more than J.E. on the later albums. J.E. Mainer died in June, 1971 before a scheduled appearance at a festival in Culpepper, Va.
Songcarriers and musicologists would be particularly interested in this type of archival material. Don't expect to hear vocal harmonies, elaborate arrangements or the same level of clarion studio recording quality we hear today. Rather, just enjoy and relive a classic country sound of yesteryear. Customer Reviews:
HYLO IS A LEGEND.......2002-12-13
MY OPINION MIGHT BE BIASED BECAUSE HYLO LIVES WITH MY GRANDFATHER'S SISTER. BUT HE TRULY IS UNDERRATED. HE WROTE SOME INCREDIBLE BALLADS. THE GRANDFATHER FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF MY FAMILY WAS A BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAIN BOY. THEY ARE FROM SOUTHERN OHIO. ROY ROSS (MANDOLIN), RECENTLY DECEASED, PLAYED ON THIS ALBUM. HE HAS A GREAT STYLE SIMILAR TO JESSE MCREYNOLDS. HYLO IS DOING OK ALTHOUGH HE HAS TO WALK WITH CAIN BECAUSE OF A RECENT BRAIN STROKE...
