Album Description
Charles Frazier's novel and the film Cold Mountain opened the door to a world of Appalachian history, life, and music. Now, John Cohen and Smithsonian Folkways take you all the way home to the source and the spirit of Appalachia in the signature sounds of its musical elders. Descendents of the 19th-century Appalachian frontier families perform traditional music they inherited from their Civil War-era ancestors. 70 minutes, 36 page booklet, historic photos.
Customer Reviews:
dark magic.......2004-12-21
First, this is not the soundtrack to the Cold Mountain movie. That recording, released a year or so ago, featured talented modern musicians who recreated the 19th-Century music from the film and the Charles Frazier novel on which it was based. Back Roads to Cold Mountain covers much (and more) of the same material, except as it was done by authentic mountain musicians.
With one or two exceptions, these songs and tunes were alive during the Civil War. They survived into the early and mid-20th Century, to be rediscovered by folksong collectors. Most selections come from Folkways' deep archives, ably picked by John Cohen, whose recordings with the New Lost City Ramblers introduced many of us to the Appalachian tradition during the 1960s folk revival and after. Frazier himself, who provides the introduction to the enclosed booklet, explains how this music inspired his novel, set in Civil War-era North Carolina. Cohen's extensive liner notes and annotations are informative and engrossing.
Few of the musicians are likely to be familiar, though names like the Stanley Brothers, Bill Monroe, Doc Watson, Roscoe Holcomb, and Tommy Jarrell will resonate with those who have at least passing knowledge of the tradition. The performances are always inspired, sometimes rawly emotional in a way that has vanished from today's music; sometimes a performance may be even a little frightening, for one dramatic example Oscar Parks's angry rant at the conclusion of the ballad "The Battle of Stone River." French Carpenter's fiddle tune "Camp Chase," on the other hand, aches with mournful beauty.
The sound quality, thanks to modern technology, is so perfectly executed that it serves to erase distance between listener and performer. Time and geography roll away, and you're right there on a back porch or a church bench, hearing the ballads, fiddle pieces, and hymns in person. There is a dark magic in this old music, and Back Roads evokes it brilliantly.

Customer Reviews:
What ??.......2006-12-10
The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!
Nice Voice, but not a nice person...(read on, pls.).......2006-01-07
Paul Robeson, who was brainwashed into
beleiving Communist rhetoric (which is
strange as hell for an Amer-I-can black
man). A good singing voice but all cover
songs! Come on, Paul!
A let down.......2004-09-24
I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.
The definitive Paul Robeson compilation.......2003-09-19
This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

Powerful Bluegrass-Gospel.......2004-10-12
This cd is a powerful witness about the love, redemption, renewal, and transformation in Christ. Track 1 "I'm Gonna Sing, and track 12 "He Took Me In," are the two best songs on the album. Those two songs are driving bluegrass-gospel numbers that showcase the impressive harmony skills of Ralph Stanley and the band. The rest of the album is impressive as well. I believe Ernie Thacker is singing lead for the band at this time, and he is natural, smooth, and polished. Ralph has an excellent band now, but this one with Ernie Thacker and Junior Blankenship is just as good as any.
The emphasis on vocal talent and timing is really what makes this album special. There is also several songs where Ralph is able to show off his haunting voice, such as "silent warden." This is really special music that no doubt you will enjoy for years and years, it truly is timeless.

Customer Reviews:
Great Debut.......2004-05-21
Although Erin Boone is not a household name, her debut album is sure to turn a few heads. A talented young singer/ songwriter, Erin delivers a genuine feeling to her songs with honest lyrics and catchy tunes. Refusing to stick to a particular style, the album features a hodge-podge of musical styles including pop, bluegrass, blues, and gospel, in a mix that is sure to please everyone. This album is truly a wonderful debut and hopefully Erin's subsequent releases will only get better from here.
