Ulrich Schnauss is a German electronic artist who is influenced by forebears like Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk--but unlike retro-space artists, he doesn't sound like he just emerged from their dusty studios after being marooned there for 30 years. Instead, his synthesizers bristle with contemporary electro-rhythms, a bit of New Wave romanticism, and melodies you want to last forever. Schnauss has perfected a balance between quiet yearning and joyful heroism in his music, with sweeping major-chord progressions that are triumphal without being ostentatious, expansive without being pompous. For someone who is so rhythm-centered with crackling snares and electro-glitches, it's ultimately the melodies that draw you in, turned on glistening, bell-like timbres and space-organ sustains. Far Away Trains Passing By is actually his first album, released in Europe in 2001, but it's been out of print and is being issued in the United States for the first time. The reissue comes with a bonus CD that includes six pieces pulled from various Schnauss side projects and tracks that didn't make the original album. Far Away Trains Passing By is electronica with a melancholy soul, and it has lost nothing in the intervening years. --John Diliberto

Album Description

The long-awaited domestic release of Ulrich's dreamy 2001 debut. His 2004 set, "Strangely Isolated Place" was a hit with shoegazer and electronic fans alike, and toured with much fanfare in support of M83. Includes a 6-track bonus EP of non-LP material

5 out of 5 stars Just when you thought you'd heard it all..........2007-07-12

Don't get me wrong, I love music...but my tastes are pretty narrow in the overall scheme of things. I'm a mad electronica and dance music fan, like some more alternative rock, some mainstream...but not much. I also don't write reviews very often (probably more because I go on about other things instead and stay away from the topic at hand...oh well...

But then I came across this gem. My favourite artists are Depeche Mode, UNKLE, d*note, Cinematic Orchestra, Faze Action, Beastie Boys, Slowdive, Ride, etc, etc...I love them all...but this - this is something special. Yes there are aural soundscapes, yes there are gently evoked moods and rhythms (we've read it all before), but this is music that touches your very core. It talks to you and folds you into its melodic conversation. And THAT doesn't happen often. Buy this...and then buy everything else that Mr Schnauss has done. For what it's worth, I don't recommend music often, but this is absolutely beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars audio endorphine.......2007-06-27

I noticed Ulrich Schnauss' work listening to Internet radio 'chill' stations, and simply had to have it.

I've been listening to electronic music for quite a long time -- all the way back to Wendy Carlos' 'Switched on Bach', and have tried my hand at it a bit too. Ulrich Schnauss has taken his place among the masters of the genre, and 'Far Away Trains Passing By' is a must-have for anyone interested in electronic music.

His selection and control of sounds and layering is a delight to the ears. The mix invites you to test the limits of your sound system. The compositions are more harmonically interesting than most electronica artists and his rhythmic sense is subtle and polished, and not guilty of the awkwardness or formulaic tedium that too often burdens European artists.

That said, Ulrich Schnauss' work transcends dissection. It is the feeling of love that pours forth -- alienation, yes, isolation, that too, coolness and detachment. But through it all, love. This music is art.

Thank you Ulrich.

5 out of 5 stars Ulrich to the rescue!.......2007-05-12

I rate songs according to their 'longevity', and this is one I can listen to over and over. having been disenfranchised by the 'unrelenting' whining of today's 'Contemporary' (whatever the 'genre'), I appreciate music inclined to the 'experiential' rather than the 'self-aggradizement' of individuals void of depth and inspiration. whew! that having been said, the music of Ulrich Schnauss is not for the 'skin deep' or people afraid to be still. 'anger' has become today's plague, and it has infected every arena of every day life. the world needs to chill, and we need all the help we can get. Ulrich to the rescue! Far Away Trains Passing By is a welcomed 2 disc CD (includes bonus tracks) engineered with that in mind. 'Blumenwiese Neben Autobahn' will keep you within the 'posted' Speed Limit. 'Between Us & Them' whispers the promise of a new day. 'Passing By' declares our will to resist. 'Nobody's Home' instills that longing to return for those 'far away'. and 'Knuddelmaus' brings you home, safe & sound. I first heard Ulrich over an iTunes Ambient Radio station, and previewed several of his songs before purchasing 2 albums from Amazon. (A Strangely Isolated Place). I keep copies of both in the car. think I'll call AAA to see if I can get a discount on my policy!

5 out of 5 stars Better than i had expected.......2007-04-23

i was just reading through the amazon reviews etc. and was lucky to have stumbled upon this cd. I must say i am absolutely taken away by the music of Ulrich Schnauss. I have listened to quite a few ambient artists, but Ulrich Schnauss takes the cake. This album is well rounded and you will find yourself listening to it over and over again, especially 'between us and them'.
give this cd a listen, you will not be dissapointed.

It is a perilous proposition when genres clash--and no such collaboration is more potentially fraught than when improvisation-trained folk musicians sit in with Western classical instrumentalists, who are taught to interpret a printed score. The renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma has devoted much of his professional life to such intercultural experiments. But the traditions of nations situated along the ancient Silk Road, which began in the Far East, meandered through Asia and terminated in Europe, are especially dear to him. These lushly arranged pieces range from moody scenic vistas to percussive Turkish hip-shakers and they make very pleasant listening. If they owe more to the European canon than the ethnic sources that inspired them, they are also the result of respectful give-and-take between a team of acknowledged masters. And nobody is more of a team player than Maestro Ma, an impassioned, fearless musical seeker and a gracious, deferential colleague. --Christina Roden

this collection of music is quite a cultural experience. I've been hooked since I opened the cover!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation with Marvelous Tracks.......2007-01-20

I enjoyed this compilation of Silk Road music very much. It delivers a nice, diverse sample of music from the region. My favorite track of the CD is Shikasta, but I like the others as well.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the first Silk Road CD.......2006-11-23

Yo-Yo Ma went beyond indeed. The first CD with Silk Road ensemble (When Strangers Meet) was inconsistent and somewhat experimental. This one however, is superb. As if in the 5 years the musicians got to know each other (but in truth, only a few musicians are the same). 23 traditional Eastern instruments are listed plus a number of western strings and other percussion was used. So the music on this CD gets my full attention, and as the title of first track suggests, you (can) get enchanted.
The tracks are ordered into three parts: Enchantments (1-5), Origins (6-9) and New Beginnings. First track is strangely familiar (like it was used in some film, but there is no mention of this). In third track this theme gets Chinese interpretation. The style from one track to the other changes, so you can't get bored or overexcited. Second is simply very nice, the fourth great intro of Armenian wind instrument duduk (played by famous Gevorg Dabaghyan), accompanied by percussion mostly, albeit the piece is short. 5 is gentle with cello and xun (Chinese ocarina), 6 orchestral from slow to cool, 7 again gentle with cello and vocal, 8 starts with yearning duduk and turns into orchestral battle, 9 cello and percussion. Track 10 is the only one with prominent vocal (love song) and introduces us to the last part of CD, which are more like jam sessions of all instruments. 11 and 13 are very lively. The last one, track 15, brings us a new interpretation of very ancient Chinese melody played on pipa.

Some would probably say this CD is commercialized. Personally I don't see any wrongdoings in this as long the music stays a high quality one. For the more authentic Silk Road one can always buy The Silk Road: A Musical Caravan.

One of the best concerts I attended in my life (so far... :-)...)

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best !.......2005-12-06

This album has captured the soul of the Silkroad. There is not a single track in this album I don't like. I've been listening to it over and over and over again since I first got it. I think it's much better than the first one.

Over The Hills is on twice, Sean Bean recites it, then a couple tracks later Tams sings it. The other songs are marvelous also.

5 out of 5 stars Tuneful.......2007-02-27

Great CD...tuneful and hummable...swell as background or as company for either the Sharpe videos or books or just in its own right. Spry, energetic, wistful and melancholic by turns...perfect for the ipod or in the car

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music..........2007-02-23

This collection of period music is truly a window into the past...and I see it as fitting tribute to the generations of anonymous English soldiers who fought for king and country.

Listen closely to the eloquent lyrics, with its themes of duty, longing for home, and military hardship...themes that sound anachronistic, but upon further thought, resonate universally--esp. for today's military families. And the songs are effectively delivered in John Tams' soothing, seasoned voice.

Some of the reviews here complain of song "over-instrumentalization", which made me apprehensive about buying this CD. Now that I've heard it, I find both song versions of "Far and Away" to be beautiful...in their own ways.

5 out of 5 stars Great music to read Sharpe by.......2006-07-09

Love this album. So glad I bought it and have played it non-stop since I opened it. I'm reading the entire Sharpe series and it's great background music. Thanks to Amazon for making this item available.

5 out of 5 stars Tams' Vocals Are Superb in this Napoleonic Wars Tribute .......2005-12-02

Owning the 'Sharpe' DVD set gave me so much exposure to John Tams' wonderful voice that I had to get this CD. Some reviewers complained of excessive instrumentation on his songs on this album, but I was not put off by the arrangements at all. Granted, one selection, 'Over the Hills and Far Away', could have been ramped back a bit to just a guitar, fiddle and maybe a drum. In other words, dont expect Tams to be as raw and boisterous as Rifleman Hagman marching through the Spanish hills.

I would consider this CD as the rough equivilant to 'Liberty', a Mark O'Conner effort for the PBS show by the same name on the American Revolution. Other CD's in the same vein are 'More Songs and Music from 'Gettysburg'', or 'Songs of the Civil War', from the Ken Burns series. All these CD's had a mixture of vocal and band music inspired by their respective era. 'Over the Hills' has a good mix of tunes representing the English side of the Napoleonic Wars including several selections the current military Band and Bugles of the Light Division, a direct descendent of Sharpe's 95th Rifle Regiment. I'm a sucker for military band music, so I thought they were great.

The only down side I have with the CD is the instrumental soundtrack cuts from the TV show that take up space between the songs. As a collector of soundtracks, I would have returned this CD if that were all it contained, as they are unremarkable background music.

Lastly, I must comment on what I consider the gem of the albumn, a short song named 'Love Farewell'. Tams' heart-rending vocals and wonderful arrangement speak of everyone who has ever left - or been left - to go off to the wars. Roger Wilson's fiddle playing on this song and the others is excellent as well.

If you like the Sharpe series or military/folk music in any form then this is an album to add to your collection.

Novelist Cormac McCarthy's literary vision of the wild west is given wide-screen treatment by maverick director Billy Bob Thornton and a cast that includes Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, and Bruce Dern. Professional country music journeyman Marty Stuart has performed with father-in-law Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, in addition to a successful solo career. In his soundtrack scoring debut, he provides short, meditative instrumental pieces that are subtly explosive--rife as they are with strains of old-school country and bluegrass. Cinematic strings and orchestral percussion add a welcome menacing edge, augmenting the rustic approach without crossing over into a compromised "countrypolitan" sound. If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. They stand as a new genre of cinematic country minimalism. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Great western soundtrack.......2004-02-28

This is a must buy for fans of western soundtracks. It mixes beautifully symphonic music with Guitar music and spices it up all together with a south of the border flavor. Haunting music that will make you want to never take it out of your cd changer. It also
Features two vocal pieces, the first a spanish song sung by the very talented Raul Malo of the country group the mavericks, the second song is a beautiful ballad sung by Marty Stuart. Though I never owned any cd's of Marty Stuart he earns my respect with composing this film score.(cowboy hats off to you Mr.Stuart)

5 out of 5 stars Truly Incredible.......2003-03-12

This album is a masterpiece. Within the first strums of the guitar, you feel as though you are among the southwestern hills. It has immediately become one of my favorites of all-time. The songs are filled with beautiful imagery, enchanting tunes, and haunting melodies. The shortness of the songs in unnoticable, as each song blends into the next, and the album itself serves as one epic journey. It is not meant to be listened to a song at a time, but as a whole. As I said, it is truly incredible. I would recommend it to absolutely anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Yet Another Awesome Williams Score!.......2005-04-05

You pop in this CD, and as soon as song 1 starts, you are hooked. I am a huge fan of John Williams and his scores. They are all so intensely rich and detailed. The celtic air of this score is simply thrilling, and the main theme is beaturiful.

This CD has no flaws. Aside from all the slow drama music, this CD is also full of fast paced action music.

A must have!

4 out of 5 stars Williams does an Irish turn.......2003-08-19

Once again John Williams shows why he is so sought after as a soundtrack composer. Anyone who has heard of this movie knows that it focuses on a young Irish couple seeking a new life in turn-of-the-century America, and Williams immerses himself so thoroughly in that reality that you almost feel as if you're listening to a CD by one of the many Celtic groups like Clannad or Gaelic Storm, only without the vocals. From the triumphant to the contemplative to the pugnacious to the lively rhythm of the jig, every aspect of the Irish musical character is here. (You may find that you have to turn up the volume: for some reason it isn't recorded at a particularly listenable level!) There are also moments (as in "Shannon is Shot") when Williams's own voice, so familiar to us from the "Star Wars" movies and his many other triumphs, makes a surprise appearance. Once the characters have reached the West ("Oklahoma Territory," "The Land Race") he blends his recurring Irish themes with a musical motif that suggests the newness and astonishing size of the country and the many adjustments the young pioneers have to make. I can't help wondering what Williams would be able to do with a "real" Western (why didn't Kevin Costner hire him for "Open Range," for instance?). An impressive example of a great composer's work.

5 out of 5 stars Williams in top form once again.......2002-11-19

I don't know how many times i've said that before. So many i've lost count. John Williams is without a doubt the best composer out there. He is the best thematic composer hands down and writes knockout theme after knockout theme. This one is no exception. With a touch of Irish in the music, similiar to the route Horner used in Braveheart (Braveheart used Scottish), Far and Away blows Braveheart out of the water. 2 dominant themes occur throughout the score. The first one features The Chieftains, along with Uillean pipes, pan flutes, and penny whistles. The second, which is the main theme and the one that gives the score its 5 stars, is bold, brassy, noble, and heroic all thrown into one. "The Duel Scene" and "Leaving Home" feature this theme played by strings. Fun cues to listen to include "Blowing Off Steam" and "Fighting For Dough". Both contain exciting and very fast violin lines. "The Big Match" is a highlight action cue with a militaristic snare drum thrown in. "Joseph's Dream" contains an upbeat brass march that explodes into the main theme. The best track on the album by far is "The Land Race" which is Williams in top form. It is an epic action cue that lays out the main theme the best you will ever hear it in a full brass performance. "End Credits" features both themes thrown into one suite. Enya's song "Book of Days" is good and fits into the score perfectly. This is a score that deserves to be heard because it is so good. In other words, its a John Williams score.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting form Beginning to End!.......2002-02-24

There seems to be an easy way to tell an artist's appreciation for his own work. No matter the style nor the intensity, whether the project is naturally subtle and reserved or inherently loud and bombast, there can always be an underlying excitement that reveals the artists passion for the project. Far and Away, in that case, seems like one of composer John Williams' absolute favorites. He seems to be in love with everything about this film and the style he was able to use. There is a wild energy here that many film composers never achieve, but even for Williams--who remains, with little argument, as the greatest living film composer--this exceeds some of even his more well-known works.

Starting with the sheer quantity and quality of themes, the score for Far and Away is epic. They are innumerable, just listen to the concluding "End Credits" track--and moreover, each has its own, fun style that circles the complex melding of Irish and American culture. And that is really what this score is about, the complementation of the Irish and American together as they coalesce into one and prove and develop one another. And in between Williams' masterful development of these multiple themes, as he presents them, re-imagines them, and utilizes them to their fullest capacity, he interjects some of the most beautiful thematic outbursts ever created for a film. It's harsh calling this score capricious, since it doesn't work to the music's detriment, but sometimes the mood will change so quickly and develop into a new style with new and interesting rhythms, sounds, and harmonies, that one cannot help but be enthralled by Williams' abundant imagination.

And so the finished product is the amalgamation of some of the most beautiful music, instruments, and rhythms ever to grace the big screen. Williams' undoubtedly paid a lot of attention to the music for this score, as it comes across as a veritable feat of composition. Since it does heavily reflect Irish music, I mark it as somewhere as a cross between James Horner's Willow and Ronan Hardiman's Lord of the Dance. But while in Willow Horner divulged the same outbursts of singular beauty, Williams' in Far and Away manages to surpass it by enshrouding the same outbursts more cohesively in the thematic beauty of the whole film. Certainly, this is a score not to be missed by even the most remote film music fan, and not least of all the Williams' aficionado. Far and Away represents an exciting, perpetually entertaining, adventure through the complimentary cultures of Ireland and America, as they form together to make one of the most satisfying scores ever composed.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this.......2002-01-27

Although I am biased because Far and Away is my favorite movie, the soundtrack is quite wonderful on its own. John Williams once again shows his musical genius by creating an evocative, moving composition. Buy this CD and you will not be disappointed.

'The HYMN-a word derived from the Greek 'hymnos'-has been defined as 'a term of unknown origin applied from ancient times to a wide variety of songs in honor of gods, heroes or notable men.'
The founder of English hymnody is Isaac Watts (1674-1748), whose work in reforming congregational song texts culminated in the publication of his 'Hymns and Spiritual Songs' in 1707. Watts' collection was as complete and comprehensive a set of hymns as had ever been proposed for English worship and it raised the profile of the hymn sufficiently to overcome the prevailing psalmody. The great flowering period of English hymnody began with the work of the Methodist hymn-writers John Wesley (1703-1791) and his brother Charles (1707-1788). The Wesleys gave great prominence to hymns within their Methodist worship and published many books.
The modern hymn book is a collection of hymns drawn from various times and places. This most accomplished recording by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir presents 16 well-loved hymns from 'The New English Hymnal'. A great number of the hymns, which originate from many different eras and traditions, are given an extra musical dimension by John Scott's original descants and thrilling brass arrangements.
Over the years, I have found myself purchasing mostly the recordings of English choirs. They seem to have incredible vocal skills, perfectly executed phrases, flawless diction and some unidentifiable ingredient that makes them very appealing to hear. Of course, I personally enjoy the all male choirs sound; boy sopranos and male altos make the difference. This is a very appealing group of hymns!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Hymns for every one.......2002-12-01

As I have said already..I am from espiscopal church..these my songs are well know by me...these songs give encouragement when it seems that all hope is lost..these are tunes that are well received....they are also very simple for the every day person to gain strength from day to day..they will become your daily prayer.....

5 out of 5 stars Super Praise!.......2000-06-10

Praise The Lord offers the listener traditional hymns in the English/British tradition. the clarity of the voices make it possible for the listener to follow the words distinctly. The organ soars as accompaniment. the CD provides organ and choral quality for the novice and the experienced musician.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2006-09-24

I'm not a longtime fan of Nightwish, nor am I an expert on music. All I can say is that this CD is flippin' SWEET, go buy it!

I was first introduced to Nightwish via YouTube of all places, where I saw sort of a "music video" of the Real Ghostbusters set to "10th Man Down." The more I watched the video, the more I loved the song...so I set out to buy the album that it was from. And I'm glad I did! I guess I would describe them as "Metallica" meets the "Trans-Siberian Orchestra," if that fits.

4 out of 5 stars Extremely pleasing to the ears!.......2006-06-30

As I have said before in my reviews of Nightwish, their music is amongst the most beautiful music that I have ever heard. Tarja has vocals that sound very heavenly. 'Over the Hills and Far Away' is not a full album as it only contains two new songs, a cover, and a remake. But this is a long cd! The band included six live tracks originally found on the DVD, 'From Wishes to Eternity.'

The title track is a cover that Nightwish has brilliantly chosen to perform. It is a very fun song and has some awesome celtic melodies. The chorus is really addicting! The songs '10 Men Down' and 'Away' are wonderfully done and were written specifically for this EP. The remake of 'Astral Romance' is very pleasing to the ear and is one of the best songs on the album. The live songs that are present are good choices. I would have really liked to hear 'Dead Boy's Poem,'or 'Come Cover Me,' but that is just me wanting more on this wonderful cd. Included are many songs from the albums Wishmaster and Oceanborn. After this EP, the band would later write the majestic 'Century Child.'

This is not typically a first choice album to get for a newcomer to Nightwish..as I would recommend Oceanborn, or maybe Century Child...but this is a great one to own in one's collection. The Song 'Over the Hills and Far Away' is almost worth the price alone, but having 10 songs is a real treat. It saddened me to hear about the departure of vocalist Tarja from the band, but she did a phenominal job with all of her hard work on every album. I look forward to hearing new Nightwish material in the very near future!

3 out of 5 stars It Grew on Me.......2006-05-15

This is not what I was expecting. I ordered the CD because of one member of the band who had appeared as a cast member in the TV miniseries SHARPE'S RIFLES. In the series, he occasionally sang songs from the Napoleonic era. One of them was "Over the Hills and Far Away". I learned that he was a member of this band and this CD is titled OVER THE HILLS AND FAR AWAY. I don't think they listened to anything like this in Wellington's army.

This is much more towards the heavy end of the rock spectrum. At first, I didn't like it too much. It didn't bother me but it held no attraction either. Over time, though, it grew on me. I noticed the quality of both the vocals and instrumentation. I can appreciate that even if I do not care for the style. The lead singer could sing and do a creditable job with any opera in the country.

Fans of heavy rock who appreciate great skill may well enjoy this one a lot. For me, it was not a waste but neither was it to my taste.

5 out of 5 stars Everywhere's just a journey away..........2005-10-24

While writing these words, I've recently learned of Tarja's premature departure from Nightwish. As much as this disheartens me, I truly thank her for the albums she made with the band and I wish her, as well as the remaining members of Nightwish, the best of luck!

Now onto my review...

Over the Hills and Far Away is Nightwish's first and only EP, released in 2001 under the Spinefarm label (and 2005 in the US through Century Media). Comprised of 4 brand-new tracks - a cover, a remake and two original songs written specially for this EP - along with 6 stellar live performances (depending on the version you own), this is a chapter in the Nightwish legacy not to be passed up!

We begin matters with the beautiful rendition of the Gary Moore classic "Over the Hills and Far Away", a song that has been elevated to entirely new proportions, complete with the blaring guitars and soaring operatic vocals we have come to expect from one of the first bands to combine the two. This is probably one of my favorite covers the band has done, head to head with 1998's "Walking in the Air."

Coming next is, one of the greatest Nightwish songs in my opinion, the mesmerizing "10th Man Down", a song written about the gruesome reality of, you guessed it, war. While this song may be depressing, its energetic chorus coupled with vibrant melodic structures easily make it one of the band's top performances.

"Away" falls into the Track 3 slot, and manages to slow things down tremendously, being one of the band's lightest tracks. The chorus to this song is simply unforgettable - I can't see how anyone other than Tarja could pull it off. Definitely not a song to be skipped.

The 2001 remake of "Astral Romance" comes next and, even though I wasn't too hot about the original, is a nice surprise. Taking male vocal duties is none other than Sonata Arctica frontman Tony Kakko - and if you've ever wondered what Nightwish would sound like with DECENT male vocals, listening to this is a must-do. The man really brings out the good in this song - they couldn't have picked someone better.

After this come six live tracks, all taken from From Wishes to Eternity. In order we have - "The Kinslayer", "She Is My Sin", "Sacrament of Wilderness", "Walking in the Air", "Beauty & the Beast" and the closing "Wishmaster." I won't dwell on these individually, as they are all superb, but "Walking..." and "Beauty..." truly shine through as my favorites, the latter of which also features Mr. Kakko on vocals. Just hearing the crowd cheer before and after each song is enough to send chills down your spine. In all honesty, I truly envy the fortunate people who've had the opportunity to see this stellar band perform live.

Well, writing this review has slightly remedied the sadness I was feeling earlier. I guess just thinking about the good times I've had listening to this incredible band is enough to put a smile on my face.

5 out of 5 stars Nightwish scores again.......2005-08-24

I have to say that this is one of the best by nightwish. So far I have at least 4 cd's by them and they are priceless additions to my collection. Any metal fan, regardles of type, should purcahse this. It has some of their best pieces on it. Trust me Nightwish is both powerful and meditative at the same time. A true masterpiece.

Although Ozric Tentacles is the bridge between 1970s space rock and 1990s techno, they've never quite crossed that bridge themselves. They remain suspended in an approach that sounds like it could've come straight out of the recording sessions for Gong's You and Steve Hillage's Fish Rising albums from the mid 1970s, a decade before they were formed. With Ozric, you strap yourself in and hold tight as the band careens through sequencer patterns spinning like rotor blades, slicing up the real fusion drum grooves that remain the engine of their sound. As kinetic as techno, but full of syncopated rhythms that shift through complicated time signatures, Ozric layer synthesizer swirls, deep-throb bass lines, and serrated guitar forays from founding and only original member Ed Wynne. In fact, Wynne plays a lot of the instruments and programs the entire album. With the departure of flutist Champignon, part of the sonic palette is missing, but Wynne and his wife, keyboardist Brandi, make up for it in electronic colors. Much of Ozric's music is about morphing forms, as stuttering voices evolve into a gurgling lead synth line that's chased by a guitar that morphs into an explosion. The Floor's Too Far Away breaks no new ground for the psychedelic travelers, but it is more tightly arranged and a cogent distillation of a sound that's been fermenting for 23 years. The tea is definitively steeped. Have a cuppa. --John Diliberto

Album Description

Ed Wynne has solved the mystery of time travel. As the keyboardist/guitarist/chief programmer/creative mastermind of the band Ozric Tentacles, Wynne traverses the ages through his primordial yet distinctly modern, mind-bending music. The Somerset, England, resident is a citizen of the world: his art knows no boundaries in time or space.

"Recently we have been playing the four corners of the world and it seems the audiences like the combination of techno rock, strange rhythmic grooves, stomping bass line, and the quasi ancient and ethnic music," Wynne says.

Wynne jokingly refers to OT's music as "ethnological forgery", but Ozrics' new Magna Carta release, "The Floor's Too Far Away", is far from bogus. Recorded in Wynne's home studio in Somerset, England, the nine-track, all-instrumental CD is a musical reflection of Wynne's centrifugal creative vision - a vision synthesized into a spiraled, multifaceted tapestry of butt-moving, trance-inducing ethno-techno space rock. "I've always been interested in Eastern music." Wynne says. "But none of the scales I use are official, traditional Eastern scales. They are just snippets of what I have picked up over the years from traveling to different places and keeping my ears open."

In many ways "The Floor's Too Far Away" is a signature Ozrics record. Rife with incessant intergalactic grooves, the new record offers a satisfying, near state-altering listening experience. "We took a bit more time in coming up with the proper track listing for this," admits Wynne.

4 out of 5 stars Ozric Tentacles - 'The Floor's Too Far Away' (Magna Carta).......2007-03-01

Wasn't aware these guys had a new, 2006 CD release out. 'Floor's Too Far' is a rather good neo-progressive piece of work as most of us have come to fully support the Ozrics for. Tracks that make this disc a keeper are "Armchair Journey", the quirky "Vedavox", "Spacebase", the full-blown space tripper "Disdots" and the prog gem "Etherclock". I could actually see these tunes being great to perform 'live'. I noticed, however that Ed Wynne plays everything on this CD - synthesizer, bass, guitar, programming, drums and and sampling. Ed, you REALLY need to get Rad, Zia, Seaweed, etc back in the band. It simply isn't the same.

3 out of 5 stars Sounds more like their older music .......2007-01-04

My first experience with OT was the Spirals In Hyperspace CD, which I really liked. I tried some of the older stuff, but really didn't care for it as much. This CD reminds me of their older sound, so I'm a little disappointed. Long-time OT fans may like it, however.

5 out of 5 stars I can't stop listening to it!.......2006-11-10

Distinctive, rythmic, and entirely original, the Tentacles have taken some deep grooves, mixed in an extraordinary set of sounds, and created a breathtaking array of pulsating soundscapes. The drumming is very good. Every track is unique ... there is no filler and not one clunker! This is as refreshing a progrock instrumental release as I've heard in years. I found myself GLAD that there are no vocals ... the instrumental material stands on its own, allowing the listener to conjure one's own stories to overlay the music.

4 out of 5 stars Holy "Whole Lotta S*** Going On" Batman.......2006-11-10

Good grief, talk about your techno, rock, new age on acid with a few doses of fusion jazz and classical jazz!! this CD defies description. It is startling and gorgeous and furious and all that! Pink Floyd meets Eleventh House with Larry Coryell. One of the most interesting and technical CD's I have ever heard. With all that is going on-synths and overdriven guitars and percussion galore; this a feat for the ears. Get ready, not for the faint of heart. A true musical journey. Have to listen to it 6-7 times just to "expect" any of the musical twists and turns. If you like avante garde rock you will love it, if you like hard edged fusion, you will love it. If you like music that you cannot memorize, you will love it. WOW

5 out of 5 stars Ozric Tentacles- The Floors's too far away.......2006-10-29
