The last three years have brought more success and recognition to Steven Curtis Chapman than perhaps he ever dreamed. Besides establishing himself as a sought-after songwriter Chapman's greatest strength he has shown himself to be an engaging and charismatic performer. One would think that, after racking up nearly a dozen Dove Awards, Chapman would be tempted to coast and simply spoon-feed his audience songs with all the right buzzwords, thereby putting a stranglehold on the charts, and giving himself the perfect platform from which to vault into mainstream acceptance.

So, how does Chapman top an album as widely praised as For the Sake of the Call? Happily, on The Great Adventure, Chapman has opted to pursue the course of writing honest and encouraging songs which don't simply attempt to duplicate a formula. Musically, he seems to have settled into a contemporary pop niche, with his bluegrass/country roots still an unmistakable part of the equation. That gives The Great Adventure greater conceptual unity than Chapman's previous four efforts.

Unfortunately, one of the albums first mis-cues happens to be the lead-off track, a Copland-esque instrumental prologue which is supposed to evoke in the listener a sense of joining Chapman on this bold journey. I found the opening acappella vocals ("Saddle up your horses!") of the title cut to be every bit as stirring, and more in keeping with the musical atmosphere of the rest of the album. That songs buoyant chorus, urging the listener to "follow our leader into the glorious unknown" is an accurate barometer of what's to follow. Chapman then takes us back to Eden the beginning of mans adventure on "Where We Belong," a song which illustrates how "one man became the doorway" to restore our relationship with the Father. The artists tender nature, evident on several tracks, especially shines through on "Go There With You," a beautiful song of love and support for the person chosen as a life partner ("I will give myself to love the way love gave itself for me" and "Maria," a prayer for those silently crying out ("like a desert longs for rain") for a compassionate touch.

The three tracks which come in the middle of the album best illustrate the range of Chapman's songwriting gifts. "Don't Let the Fire Die" is Chapman's plea to a friend whose faith had sustained him ("I can still feel the prayers you prayed for me all those years"), not to let his own flame of passion for Christ diminish ("I can still see the spark of his love in your eyes"). This lovely acoustic ballad is reminiscent of the sound of a 70s band Pure Prairie League, which our thirty-something readers may remember; Chapman's vocals are the most moving on this track. At the other extreme is the self-deprecating "Got to B Tru," which finds Chapman jokingly interpreting some beat-box rhythms, with the help of dc Talks Toby McKeehan. Chapman tries his best to master the hip-hop exclamation "yeah, boyy-ee!" but his Kentucky drawl can only manage an enthusiastic "yeah, bud!" Almost lost among the laughs is the important observation that how we live our faith usually speaks louder than our words. "Walk With the Wise" teaches a lesson that's simple, but one which we too often ignore: "We will grow wise if we walk with the wise." Chapman also realizes another fact most of us come to know; as we get older, our parents get smarter, or as he puts it, "I've learned to look for answers in those born before my time." The song offers a sparkling country arrangement, featuring the vocal talents of Ricky Skaggs and Lionel Cartwright, the dobro picking of Rusty Young (Poco) and accordion embellishments by Jo-el Sonnier.

One of the nicest surprises on The Great Adventure comes in the form of a guest vocal by BeBe Winans on "Still Called Today." The message again a timeless but important one is not to let the sun go down on your anger: "Go say what you need to say while it is still called today." The surprise comes not from Chapman's delivery, which is passionate and warm, but how well his voice dovetails with BeBe's, and how natural and supple Winan's sounds within the pure pop arrangement. At the other end of the trail, stripped back to a simple piano/guitar/string arrangement, Chapman reminds us that his "Hearts Cry" is to "Know the one who died for me and live my life for Christ."

There are some songs on The Great Adventure that would not be out of place on CMT and country radio; Chapman's easy-going demeanor and wholesome good looks would seem to make him a natural for either arena. But what makes The Great Adventure so satisfying is that Chapman will not sacrifice making plain his beliefs for a shot at that brass ring. -- Bruce A. 3 out of 5 stars Hard to follow Bruce Brown's review..........2005-06-24

Particularly because he elicits quite a bit of what I'd say about this disc, but I'll try. Chapman on this one has a pop sound leavened slightly with occasional country touches and the odd rap novelty tune (we'll get to that later). Chapman has won countless Dove Awards (the Christian contemporary music Grammy) for songwriting and for the most part it's clear why, even on songs that aren't that interesting musically the lyrics are solid. The album spawned 5 hit singles ("The Great Adventure",#3 and a Dove Award winner for short form music video, "Where We Belong" #6, "Go There with You" #19 (Dove Award for Pop/Contemporary Recorded Song in 1994), "That's Paradise" #3, and "Still Called Today" #20)

HIGHLIGHTS:
The title track is obviously the standout here, a charging invitation to "saddle up your horses" and ride out to spread the Gospel. But as Brown notes, the inflated "Prologue" is a bad way to get this disc underway. It's obviously meant to make the song sound more "epic" but it just sounds pompous. Definitely program past that one. "Go There with you" is a love song that deservedly has become something of a wedding standard for believers. ("I will take a heart whose nature is to beat for me alone/And fill it up with you/Make all your joy and pain my own") It's a song that emphasizes marriage as COMMITMENT...rather than something people do because of giddy infatuation. The delicate "Don't Let the Fire Die" is Chapman's plea for a fellow Christian to "keep the faith" in the midst of trials. Its mellow somewhat countryish tone is somewhat reminiscent of Poco's "Crazy Love". "Maria" is a tender reminder to watch out for those who are hurting without God's love. ("Who's gonna love Maria/Who's gonna touch her with the tenderness she longs for/Like a desert longs for rain") "Still Called Today" is a carpe diem challenge. ("Before the day slips into night and the moments waste away/While it is still called today/We've got to say the words") A soulful vocal from BeBe Winans works surprisingly well in the pop context. Mark Douthit adds a nice soprano sax solo.

LOWS:
"That's Paradise" has a pretty catchy guitar riff and a decent chorus but Mitch Miller-ish "ooh la la" vocals absolutely sink it. Phil Naish should be smacked for pasting those in there. "Got to be Tru" can only be termed a "guilty pleasure" because of it's over the top novelty. Chapman pretending to be "hip-hop" along with ex-DC Talk rapper Toby McKeehan. To his credit, Chapman IS in on the joke ("I gotta stop and just face the facts/The boy don't hip hop") and there's a solid message beneath the goofing: your life has to line up with your professed beliefs. ("It's gonna take some living proof to break through those walls/Yeah, it's got to b tru if he'll believe it at all") It's not one you'll listen to often but you might get the odd chuckle out of it.

BOTTOM LINE:
At this juncture, Chapman's released 1 Greatest Hits CD but most of the best material from this one isn't on it. Chapman fans should have it for the best stuff. Since the only great tune on it is the title one, casual fans might be happy just picking up the Hits disc. (ASIN B000000V5V) Oddly enough, it was this disc that landed the #33 spot on CCM Magazine's Top 100 Christian albums of all time list instead of the better FOR THE SAKE OF THE CALL.

5 out of 5 stars he's a little bit country..........2004-10-03

For me, this album marks the beginning of Steven Curtis Chapman establishing himself as a songwriter. Yes, he has had very strong and meaningful lyrics on previous albums, but here he does a much better job of matching the music to the flavor and intensity of the words.

He blasts right out of the gate with one of my all-time favorites, The Great Adventure. He then covers a wide variety of tempos and styles, from the tongue-in-cheek rap sound of Got To B Tru, to the upbeat celebration of God's grace in That's Paradise, to the soft, contemplative Heart's Cry. How he can corral such a wide range of styles and make them work in one album is a mystery to me, but hey, it works anyway.

Larry Hehn, author of Get the Prize: Nine Keys for a Life of Victory

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not my favorite SCC offering.......2003-10-22

This is a good SCC album, but easily my least favorite. I do love the Prologue and title track, and there are some decent moments throughout the album, but overall, I don't know. I've just always considered this a pretty weak offering and a less-than-stellar follow-up to the three flat-out phenomenal CDs that preceded this one.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!.......2001-05-17

I've never seen a song take off so fast! The Great Adventure is even heard on the Bible Broadcasting Network (at least the instrumentral intro!)

5 out of 5 stars THE GREAT (AND I MEAN GREAT) ADVENTURE!.......2001-01-31

I love this CD. With the title song, "The Great Adventure", the rap song feturing DC Talk's Toby Mac, "Got to be true" the uplifting "Dont let the fire die" and the r&b track feturing Bebe Winnans "Still Called Today", this CD is the best!!! :) BUY IT...YOU WONT BE SORRY!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Only Demonstration Disc You'll Ever Need.......2006-06-10

Well, I suppose that depends on the type of music you're testing your equipment for. However, go to almost any online discussion of audio equipment, particularly subwoofers, and you'll come across this disc. Sure, most of the other reviewers mention the sound effects in less than glowing terms. It remains though that this disc contains some of the crazy lowest signals one can buy on disc. The T rex footsteps shake the windows in my house despite being below my hearing range with my Velodyne 12" sub. Incredible stuff. And the glass shattering sound effects in the Terminator theme can melt your tweeters too if turned up too loud. Don't take yourself too seriously for a few minutes and enjoy the noise!
Beyond that, musically this is one of the Cincinatti Pops' finest soundtrack collections. Perhaps the best. Almost all of their recordings are sonically of the highest quality (Copland: Music of America won a Grammy for best engineering), but all too often in recent years the releases have not met the standard of this album. Arrangers that don't begin to care what the composer's intent was or tacking on pre-fab endings are the worst offenders, but most of the selections here meet or exceed the quality of the original soundtracks. All around, a great soundtrack collection.

5 out of 5 stars An Adventure For Your Ears.......2004-06-01

The Cincinnati Pops do an excellent job of faithfully reproducing movie soundtracks and this album is a perfect example. In fact after listening to this CD a few times, I tracked down some of the original soundtracks because I enjoyed the selections on here, such as the "El Cid" music and "Jurrasic Park." I also really enjoyed the music from "Henry V" "Robin Hood,"and "Hunt for Red October." The different tracks go together surprisingly well, like many of the pops other thematic CD's. While it might be helpful to have seen some of the movies the soundtracks come from, it is not crucial. The added soundeffects are a little gimmicky, but fairly short and on seperate tracks, so they can be skipped. If you enjoy movie soundtracks, this is a great investment.

5 out of 5 stars Blows Away All Other Such Compilations!.......2003-04-02

"Caution: Digital Sound Effects of high levels with intrasonic frequencies to 5 Hz. Please establish safe playback levels before playing tracks [3], [5], [19], [20], and [21]. Excessive playback levels could result in damage to equipment."

The above quote is found prominantly on the back cover and is a warning not to be taken lightly. The respective tracks are awesome and should be played, as well as listened to, with great care.

A 20-bit digital recording that is perfect for surround-sound systems, "The Great Fantasy Adventure Album" is a wonder for fans of the sci-fi/fantasy film genre. Highlighting some truly landmark films, the 1994 release showcases compositions from the legends of past and contemporary film scoring. Themes from the likes of Rosza, Williams, Horner, Herrmann, and Elfman are grandiosely featured here.

The best cuts are Goldsmith's "Total Recall: Main Title", "Conan the Barbarian: Anvil of Crom" (Poledouris), and Brad Fiedel's "Terminator: Theme".

Upon hearing this trio, chills will not just go up the spine but will permeate every ounce of one's body

5 out of 5 stars The perfect movie theme collection.......2000-08-16

I have a good number of Kunzel CDs, but this one could easily be called "Mark's Favorite Movie Themes." It doesn't matter that I have many of these repeated on other CDs; it saved me the trouble of having to burn my own 'faves' disc. It's good to see Basil Polodouris' "Conan" and "Red October" themes, he's often overlooked as a film composer, in my book, and regardless what one might think of the movie, the Conan score is still probably the best thing he's ever done. And the hard-to-find "Terminator" theme is hard NOT to listen to, with its highly unusual rythmic motif. I enjoy all the music selections, but having James Horner's sublime theme from "The Rocketeer" was well worth the price of the CD by itself. This is what a movie themes CD should be, and it helps that I happen to like Kunzel's choice of selections, for once. The sound effects that typically accompany these CDs are generally annoying, but I like the sonar segue into "Red October," and the T-Rex roar that precedes "Jurassic Park" is useful for scaring kids at Halloween.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best cd I have ever bought.......1999-10-27

No words can compare how remarkable this cd is. Combined with incredible sound quality, this cd will twist and turn you emotions with every single score. i can honestly say that this disc is the perfect relaxation and energizing thing ever.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Cuban Scotttish Mix of Salsa & more.......2006-03-20

I've seen this band twice live and they are amazing. This CD is a great introduction to their music which beautifully fuses traditional scottish instruments like the bagpipes with cuban rhythmes. You can't sit still.

4 out of 5 stars Hot Salsa.......2001-03-20

This is a very good Salsa album, but any Celtic influences are barely noticable with the exception of a bagpipe lick here and there. Very Cuban in flavor with hot, driving rhythms. (And I know they're not singing in Gaelic.)

I'm listening to the CD even now. I must say it has excellent production values. New and older songs of praise and worship have been given interesting and excellent renditions by this collection of ladies. The upbeat tracks are infectious, and the slower songs melt with love and sentimentality for our God and Maker. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Down Underated.......2004-09-25

When Icehouse began showing signs of American commercial breakout, "Great Southern Land" appeared. Originally released in 1989, it collected 10 songs from Icehouse's hefty catalog and added one new cut ("Touch The Fire"). It's interesting to hear how the band went from being a rather basic 80's synthpop band ("We Can Get Together") to Iva Davies' solo collective ala Roxy Music or Steely Dan ("Hey Little Girl"). Davies' greeting card to his home continent, "Great Southern Land," is also much more interesting than the corny "Down Under."

The import version of "Great Southern Land" sports more cuts than the out of print US CD, and also replaces the overdrawn remix of "No Promises" with the album version, to the song's benefit. Fans of 80's music like Roxy, Fixx and Ultravoxx would do well to seek this CD out.

5 out of 5 stars Original recordings.......2002-03-26

A wonderful introduction to Iva's world. Each song is wonderfully written and recordrd and, unlike another review points out...these are the original versions and NOT re-recorded.
There are NO Man Of Colours tracks as Iva felt they were too new at the time and deserved to be heard as a set and not broken up for inclusion on a greatest hits package.

Any Icehouse purchase is worth it.

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Sample Of Icehouse.......2002-01-17

May I just begin by saying the man's name is IVA- who is this Ira guy? This is a good introduction to Icehouse. If you enjoy this c.d., I recommend purchasing all the individual albums. They are all brilliant (okay, 'Sidewalk' is a bit cheezy but the rest are worth it). I must disagree that there is not enough from "Man of Colours". While that album offers some decent songs, the earlier albums are much better in my humble opinion. We have all heard "Electric Blue" and "Crazy" quite enough. I believe this album offers insight into the slightly more obscure but always intriguing world of Icehouse.

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential OZ.......2000-03-05

While Oils were rocking the Northern Beaches pub circuit, Ira Davies was busy putting together the most sophisticated Australian music legacy of the time. In a golden era for Oz/NZ music, Icehouse stands as arguably the best, and certainly, the most underrated band of their time.

Buy this CD, listen to it once - I dare you!

3 out of 5 stars good,but lots missing.......2000-03-03

yea a great cd....BUT where are any songs from man of colors? ( crazy, electric blue). + ONLY 1 Song from there BEST album is here! (don't believe any more), where is (dusty pages, and even "take the town" ) songs are redone as well, not to put that down, but no orginal recordings here.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Good bargain........2004-08-25

The performances are good--this is the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, after all--and you get 2 full CDs, with 2 selections from "Trial by Jury", 5 from "HMS Pinafore", 9 from "The Pirates of Penzance", 9 from "Iolanthe", 12 from "The Mikado", 6 from "The Yeomen of the Guard", and 13 from "The Gondoliers". The booklet is a bit skimpy, and only lists recording dates for the first CD (1929-1949). But the sound is good, and the music is great, and at this price it's a great "greatest hits" collection.
