CD2 is the reunion of the 2 LP's recorded for Philips: "...what that is!" (1969, 1-12) & "is in your mind" (1970, 13-24). Beware: the 2 CDs are reversed when you listen it with WMPlayer. I think it was a second peak of his long but heratic carreer: a miss for the history of blues and rock'n'roll in general. Enjoy his powerful & blowin' voice, anyway.

Very, VERY good!.......2004-01-26

As a teenager, I was already a big Hawkins Family fan when this album came out in 1980, so I was just waiting to be blown away when I bought it...AND I WAS! THIS FAMILY IS AMAZING! To this day it still brings me so much joy. As a Christian, the messages in the songs uplift my soul. As a vocalist and musician, I am floored by this LIVE recording. Edwin Hawkins' gradually building arrangement of "What is This?" is a "must listen" with a pulsating bass line under brother Walter's lead solo (with cameo lines from sister, Lynette, and Walter's then wife, Tramaine). Lynette shines on "Love is God" (check out the harmonies in the melodious ending), as does cousin, Shirley Miller on "Try Christ" (even emcee, Philip Bailey, gets caught up in the reprise). And listen to how the 7 very UNIQUE voices (Walter, Edwin, Tramaine, Lynette, Shirley, and sisters Feddie & Carol) blend into a tight unit on "Going to a Place" and the blusey "I'm a Pilgrim". Other treats include a duet with Maurice White (of Earth, Wind & Fire) and Edwin on "Eternal Life", and horns behind every cut by none other than the Tower of Power horn section.

The 'Love Alive' Series of albums (CDs) set the standard for gospel music. As a new/seeking Christian in college, these albums helped form my spiritual base. The Hawkins Family (Walter, Edwin, Tramaine, Lynette, etc.) is the 1st Family of Gospel Music. LOVE ALIVE makes the point! Excellent!

This is a great CD. This Fmily of singers are at the top of their game. The music is excellently produced and gives an award winning sound. I can hardly wait for more good music from the Hawkins family!

You won't be disappointed with this CD. Classic Hawkins sound, tons of energy, great music and powerful praise. The energy is infectious. If you can sit still, if you don't feel the presence of the power and Spirit of God -- listen again 'cause it's just like being at the recording session. Fabulous.
