Customer Reviews:
Fave.......2006-04-17
I discovered Bryan shortly after I became born-again when he was a staple on the CCM circuit. I saw him many times and always appreciated his exuberant performances. As I've grown older I've only grown to appreciate him more. Don't let the fun in Bryan's music (or rap attempts) blind you to the legendary vocal talent or lyrical depth he brings. "Lunatic" is one of my favorites for the music (killer studio guys - the Groove!!) and for the insight. If you think the song "Lunatic" is just weird, you're missing the point of the song and something critical about yourself. I saw Bryan at the airport a while ago. I didn't get to talk to him, but if I did I would thank him for his music, being honest, being himself and pointing out our evil churchiness.
A 'must' for any christian music collection.......2004-12-02
The fact that this album consists of musicians like Jeff Porcaro (drums) and Nathan East (bass) is indicative to anyone that you will not be disappointed. However, add Bryan's flawless vocals, arrangements and songwriting and you've got a 5-star project.
I have followed Bryan's career since the early days of Sweet Comfort Band ('Hold On Tight,' etc.) and, in my humble opinion, this is his greatest solo effort to date. Actually, I believe it should be in the Top 5 of all christian solo projects ever released. It is simply awesome!
The ONLY thing (and I mean ONLY thing) that lets it down is a 30-second 'RAP' bit added by a female studio vocalist and Bryan in "Mr. Bailey's Daughter." It's a bit 'cheesy' but what do you expect from a early-90's release?
Musically, vocally and lyrically it is perfection. If you are a Bryan Duncan fan and you do not own this album, don't think just push 'ADD TO BASKET.' If you have not yet heard Bryan Duncan before and can only afford one of his albums, this is the one!
The End Of The Silliness?! Hardly!.......2001-06-08
Bryan Duncan had often been regarded as CCM's "Wild Man", a reputation not entirely undeserved (in addition to the soulful screamin' he took a stab at rap on his previous album "Strong Medicine"... whew!). On "Lunatic", Duncan does not run way from his rep, he embraces it.
Many of his songs are unconventional to say the least, but still very listenable. His innovative lyrics explore legalism, freedom and strength in Christ, the desperation of a doubtful faith, and the sweet rest Jesus' grace provides. The music itself is almost as versitile as Duncan's golden pipes. He ranges from toe-tappin' gospel ("Sunday Go To Meetin'" & "Ain't No Stoppin' Now"), to smooth jazz ("Leave Your Light On For Me" & "All Is Forgiven"), to tender ballads ("Blessed Are The Tears" & "I Love You With My Life"), to the just plain wierd title track.
After this project, Duncan went on to more "serious" albums, but he always maintained the stong convictions that permeate every note of "Lunatic Friend".
Really a Twelve Star.......1999-04-07
Been with Bryan for years. This is a classic. I have so Many Lunatic Friends, but most favorite is Bryan. What a Jewel. You keep on doing it Bryan. Many, many, many, blessings to your wife and kids for sharing you with us all. I love everything you've done. Yes, its your committed friend........ The Lunatic P.K.
awesome awesome awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......1998-12-15
you'll be singing and dancing in your car and will be brought to tears as well. this man is THE singer of this generation. he has a jazz voice with a multi-octave range; however the music he does is more funk-rock, r&b and ballad.
