Socially conscious and sonically profound.......2007-07-06
There's a lot of references to family on this record. They're not just talking about their own brotherhood, but that of the world. The title is a Biblical reference--and a moral dilemma. Are we our brothers' keepers? Listen to the music to hear this legendary group's answers. The music's heart wrenching and uplifting. Another great job by a legendary family that I'd call brothers of my heart.
Our sons and daughters from New Orleans.......2005-09-04
It's the Saturday of the week of Hurricane Katrina. I was listening to the community radio station in Boulder/Denver last night, KGNU.org. And I heard the most stunning song, that I came to learn was "Sons and Daughters" from "Brother's Keeper."
I came to this site, and appreciated what the reviewer Tyler from Denver said about the song, how it's an "indictment of indifference to the rifts in society that could one day blow it apart."
It appears that day has arrived.
Thankfully we have artists like the Neville Brothers to help us through.
I'm looking forward to hearing this entire CD.
Passes the test with flying colors.......2004-11-10
I test music purchases in a simple way. You hear 1 good song, think about buying, but too many things just have 1 good cut. 2 good songs, OK, maybe a good bet, worth a shot. 3 good songs, drop down your hard earned money. Any more than that, you better not wait it might go out of print. With Brother Blood, Sons & Daughters My Brothers Keeper, and the absolutely great Fearless, this is a must buy.
Musically diverse, socially aware, spiritually alive.......2000-04-10
As the title suggests, "Brother's Keeper" mixes social awareness and messages of hope and tolerance with the Neville Brothers' usual eclectic collection of grooves. It's music that you can dance and sing to, but it also makes you aware that there's a world out there that isn't always pretty. And it urges the listener to get involved in that world.
The best example of socially aware funk is "Brother Jake," which laments the death of a character claimed by the streets. It rocks powerfully, with a gospel tinge, but there's nothing mindless about it. It's a strong portrait of a tough world that takes lives.
"Sons and Daughters" tiptoes toward rap. Charles Neville's powerful oration warns us not to forsake the young people, our lifeblood, whom he says are "being led to the slaughter." It's an indictment of indifference to the rifts in society that could one day blow it apart. At the end it strays from the spoken word, mixing in a spare, powerful guitar and Charles' voice rising toward song with the words, "You can't stop/running water/You can't hide/the fire that burns inside..."
There's also balladry that gives Aaron Neville a chance to display his unique sense of soul and his wonderful falsetto, in "Fearless." "Jah" delivers a reggae feel, and the title cut blends another testimony by Charles with the biblical admonition to "be my brother's keeper, though he be strong or weaker. I got to lend a helping hand."
For straight-ahead gospel, there's "Steer Me Right," which shows off the band's on-the-money harmonies and straight-from-the-gut emotion.
Listening to a Neville Brothers release is like dropping by on a warm Friday evening to hang out with a great group of friends who are never boring and who have a million ways to deliver a point. This is a neglected release, but it shouldn't be. Pick it up and enjoy a few grooves packed with a message.

Still a favorite to me! .......2005-04-30
I have been listening to this album by Walter and Scotty Scott on and off ever since 1993. I Want To Know Your Name and Sticks and Stones got some airplay, but the entire album is very good. The funky numbers like my favorite, Open Door, are still potent. The smooth ballads, like one of Babyface's best written songs, With All My Heart, are well displayed here. And to answer the last reviewer, this was a side project that the Scott brothers decided to record. One of the members of Portrait produced some very superb songs here in Move Your Body and Open Door. The vocals are fabulous on every song. There was one song, Heaven, that later appeared on The Whispers' 1995 album, so one must ask if the duo sang it or the Whispers sang it. One of the most underrated, but yet fabulous R&B albums to come out in the '90s.
Great Album.......2004-03-21
This was a great album. Very overlooked. Has some good love makin songs. dirty dancin, heaven , rest my lips. good songs. All of them are listenable. I want to know your name is by far the best remake ive ever heard.
Great follow up to the Whispers' "More of the Night".......2004-02-19
I don't know why this album is not credited to all the Whispers, but I do know that it picks off where 1990's More Of The Night leaves off. My Brother's Keeper again employs a possy of young, energetic producers. Every song is a winner as the brothers are in top form. They share lead vocals on every song although Scotty really has the better voice. You'll love the naughty Dirty Dancin' and how it cleverly transitions into Heaven. For good old fashioned fun, nothing can touch the remake of I Want To Know Your Name. The featured players include Portrait (they've never done anything as good as Open Door), Babyface, and Gerald Albright.

Absolute classic.......2005-01-29
This album surprised me. I didn't know what to think when I first saw it. I figured it would have the classic No Limit beats and productions. But, Kane & Abel have distinct vocals that set them apart from other rappers. You can tell they got that street credential..and they show it. The production on this cd blew my mind. They've got crazy flows and amazing cuts all throughout the album. Check out song number 6 with snoop dogg. This is one of the best bet layouts in any song. Plus, number 10 is one of the realest rap songs ever compiled. Kane & Abel come off harder on this track than I ever thought they could. I know gangsta rap, and this entire cd shocked me...for real. Be surprised at song number 4, a tupac remake from "2pacalypse now". When I herd that song, I knew Kane & Abel were for real. Get this album. Don't be embarassed to own a No Limit cd. A real rap fan will appreciate this album. Go get it!!!
This CD is OK.......2003-09-27
I got almost all of No Limit's CD's, and this CD could have been a lot better. I love how these guys flow together. They almost sound the same at some points in their songs. The best songs on here are "Time After Time", this song is tight!! Also, "Soldier Story", Throw Them Thangs", Ghetto Day", and "Bout That Combat". Go get this CD!
OK.......2003-07-04
Kane and Abel come back again with their second LP on No Limit Records. This is the best cd they have put out after all the horrible music they put out after leaving No Limit. This album was produced by Beats by The Pound(Now as the Medicine Men). Kane and Abel rap about the only thing they know, crime, sex, violence, ghetto, and drugs. They use old elements from other songs like on "Time After Time" and "Solider Story". This album has too much bland music and they don't ever change their formula, with too many cameo apperances from below average rappers makes this LP boring. You can't tell whos Kane and whos Abel. Don't get me wrong the twinz can rhyme and they are one of the best on the tank. But with too many tracks, too many cameo apperances, and familiar formulas makes this album seem like a No Limit Compilation than a KAne and Abel cd. I would pick this up cause it does have good tracks but think to yourself, how much of the same formula can No Limit keep puting out for consumers to digest
so so goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood!.......2003-04-17
one of the best No Limit-Releases ever! the twins really spit game and Beats By The Pound made a lotta fine beats for this one.my favs are "Stress", "Ghetto Day" and track #3 with Master P & Fiend. go get it!
One of my Favorite Cd's.......2002-03-28
Kane & Abel came even better on this album than The 7 Sins. This was also their last album on No Limit and they came with that fire. If you don't like this cd, something's wrong with you.

On My NewYork S**t!!!.......2006-09-15
This is what NY is missing....That gutta, str8 flowing with hard NY underground beats. Lake is not the most gifted rapper but he does get his point across. Cormega is on most of the songs but this is Lakes solo album, so don't expect a Mega album.
Lake keeps it street but also shows his other faces on the album. Tracks like "Q.U. Side", "Walk Through Heaven", and "Don't Start" are some of my favorites. Out of the 18trks I skip about 3 songs which ain't bad. Hip-Hop still has a pulse, thinks Lake and Mega!!! Hotep!!!
Lake Featuring Cormega - My Brother's Keeper.......2006-09-04
Queensbridge's own Lake & Cormega deliver "My Brother's Keeper" (2006). Lake's last official release was "Lake Entertainment Presents: The 41st Side" a dope collaboration album. He also did a memorable joint with Nas called "Revolutionary Warfare". This year Lake was the first addition to Death Row East, and has come correct on some mixtapes. Cormega's reputation as a talented MC is well known. My favourite tracks on this release are generally the laidback ones like the memorable "Qu Side" where the Lost Boyz lead MC Mr. Cheeks rhymes with Lake, the heartfelt "Hood Legends" which has Lake and Cormega remembering all the boys they lost to the game and Cormega rhyming solo over DJ Premier's supreme production on the closing track "Dirty Game". Lake's "Walk Through Heaven" is another powerful cut, where Lake takes himself to Heaven delivering a dedication to rappers & and many friends who have died. Throughout this release Lake and Cormega tag team genuine joints with grimy rhymes and choruses about street life backed by ominous sounding production. All of these cuts are solid - some of the highlights of these for me were "Stress & Greed", "No Happy Ending", "Hot on The Block" & "Dirty NY" Feat. Fat Joe. Lake & Cormega provide an impressive album with "My Brother's Keeper", one worth adding to the collection.
Another great album from Q.B - 4.5 stars.......2006-08-29
Lake comes back hard after not dropping an album for almost 5 years (his classic "41st Side" Compilation), and he does it with some help from Cormega (another great QB emcee), who has a few classic/near classic albums to his name as well. With 14 songs, Lake is on 13, and Mega is on 8, and guests rap on1 song and do the hook on 3 so you get to hear a good amount from 2 of the best rappers from QB, or all of rap in that matter. Of the 14 songs, 2 are classics, 2 are ok, the other 10 are good songs,. not one weak joint on here. Production is nice as well. J Waxx Garfield does 3 songs, Buckwild does 2, DJ Premier, Now & Laterz, Ski, Hot Day, Cormega, Ax the Bull, Get LArge, Q Butta & Jay Boy al do 1 song. if tyou like real street rappers, Queensbridge rappers, then you gotta ahve this one in your collection.
#2 - 9 (nice beat)
#3 - 9 (lake f/ mega -- nice beat)
#5 - 7.5 (lake f/ uniqua star)
#6 - 7.5 (Lake & mega f/ Greg nice (who has a horribly annoying hook)
#8 - 10 (CLASSIC!! -- Lake f/ Mr. cheeks -- great beat -- about his days growing up in Queens)
#10 - 9 (about snitches -- uses a beat off Mega's "True Meaning" album)
#11 - 10 (CLASSIC -- Lake solo -- great beat)
#12 - 8.5
#13 - 8.5 (Lake solo -- dedication to some dead people he knew)
#14 - 8.5 (about QB hood legends)
#15 - 8.5 (Lake solo)
#16 - 9 (Lake solo about snitches)
#17 - 9 (Mega, Lake, Fat Joe)
#18 - 8 (Cormega solo)

Solid collabo from two gifted lyricists.......2006-08-22
Remember the end of Nas's "Represent" on the "Illmatic" album? In case you don't, Nas shouts out a certain unknown hip hop duo, "My man Cormega and Lakey da Kid..." Twelve years later, they churn out an album. Cormega, of course, has by now established himself as a true lyricist, a Queensbridge street poet in the vein of Nas, AZ, Prodigy, and Noreaga. I have always admired Cormega because although he is as lyrical as almost any, he always keeps his raps at a street level that you can feel. Lake has been largely quiet to this point, except for his "41st Side" compilation in 2001. "My Brother's Keeper", released on Mega's Legal Hustle label, is an enjoyable disc of good collaboration material. The two don't really break much new ground, but they keep their raps raw and gritty, this is an album for the streets and not the radio, like most of Cormega's music to this point. The production is handled by a number of producers, largely by New York and D.I.T.C. legend Buckwild. A lot of the production seems pretty familiar though, it's the same nostalgic simple production that Mega has had on his albums. Lake is often outshined by his partner, but he too is a good lyricist. His voice reminds me a lot of Melachi from Group Home, he does a nice job on this album. "My Brother's Keeper" has a very underground feel to it. It's a very enjoyable album and one of the better I've heard so far this year.
Following an epic sounding intro, the album opens with "Ghetto". Cormega raps about experiences growing up, and Lake drops a tough warning verse. The production is strong and it's a good short song. "The Oath" has simple, understated production and nice gritty verses from Lake and Mega. Lake tells a mafioso style tale on "30/30" and explores his character. "Don't Start" is a good song, but the chorus sampled from YoungBloodZ' "Damn!" should have been reconsidered. "QU Side" is excellent, a definite highlight. Mr. Cheeks, he of Lost Boys and "Lights Camera Action" fame, makes an excellent guest appearance. It's a soft track, with tasteful vibesy production and good verses from all three parties. "Snitch Nigga" uses a tried-and-true gritty beat which is matched by warning shots from the hard verses by Lake. My favorite beat on the album is found on "Stress & Greed", it has horror-style piano and good bass and drums. "Walk Through Heaven" is the album's lyrical highlight. Lake has conversations with fallen rappers, friends, and neighbors in heaven, and he seems so genuine. It's a great song lyrically. "Hood Legends" is a good track, but it will seem familiar to Cormega fans. "Hot on the Block" and "Get It" are both strong, street ready tracks, and "No Happy Ending" is great. Fat Joe shows up for the New York anthem "Dirty NY", another highlight. DJ Premier produces the bonus track, "Dirty Game", another good collabo that ends the album well.
"My Brother's Keeper" is bound to get slept on like a lot of Mega's music has, but this is a nice album that I recommend to fans of unadulterated hip hop and New York rap fans. I think it would please a lot of people and both parties do a very nice job.

Amazing for a demo.......2005-07-18
Much like "Winds Of Heaven, Stuff Of Earth" Rich's first album from '88, at which after sending a in a demo tape of songs he was trying to sell the rights too, Reunion Records called him and let him know they liked the album and wanted to release it "ALL 10 SONGS AS IS" which had never been don't before in music, so he sent them the reels and they released it, with out a single change to the original demo mix, with that said not all of the songs on "Brother's Keeper" are demos, but many were and that is really saying something about a TRUE MUSICIAN when he can nail it on the first try, even if it does sometimes sound a little basic in the music it is at this point that Mullins showed the world he not was but IS the World's Greatest Christian Lyricist since David him self.
Rich's Best Album.......2004-08-04
Rich Mullins was Christianity's piano-pop sage, goof-off and resident Franciscan poet. Sentimental eulogies aside, Mullins was one of the most important figures in Contemporary Christian Music of the last 25 years. His songwriting, both thoughtful and unpretentious, was always delivered with a kind of unvarnished honesty that set him worlds apart from his contemporaries. This was never more clear than in Rich's live shows, where usually with nothing more than a piano, a hammer dulcimer and faithful sidekick Beaker, he would open up that heart full of wonder and earth-weary loneliness and invite listeners to join him.
Over the years, my biggest gripe was that Rich's over-produced studio albums seemed to belie the homespun presentation of the shows-- where his songs clearly shined. Although his biggest selling studio albums contained some amazing music, Reed Arvin's often schmaltzy production and CCM radio-friendly gloss seemed to badly date most of his early work. That is one reason why Brothers Keeper is Rich Mullins' best album.
Leaving behind the synths and pop stylizations of
What's Missing?.......2003-09-01
I own all the Rich Mullins albums and always have one in my CD case. What I try to do is go through them one at a time, swapping them out in chronological order. "Brother's Keeper" doesn't last longer than a couple days.
Why? Not because of Rich's voice or lyrics -- both are his usual high caliber. It's the music -- the tone has shifted to a boring, half-asleep shuffle. Listen to the percussion on almost any track: it's so straightforward, laying down a basic downbeat, that I can't help but wonder if the drummer was bored (exceptions: "Cry the Name" and maybe "Promenade"). Contrast this with any of the tracks from "A Liturgy, Legacy..." and you'll hear it.
"Brother's Keeper" is also a shift in that it is heavily country-inflected; the Celtic and gospel sensibilities heavily present in Rich's music before this album are not readily in evidence. This is not necessarily a problem -- look at Mark Knopfler's very successful shift to a country sound -- the problem is that the country aura of this album sounds lazy and uninspired.
One has to wonder if the change in producers is the reason -- Reed Arvin has been replaced by Rick Elias, Mullins himself, and some others from the band. I have no information on the change; if you do, I'd love to hear it (send it to me). I do know that when I listen to the "Jesus Record", I only listen to the demos CD. Rich's natural rhythm comes through -- it pulses vibrantly on every song. When I listen to the interpretations by Rick Elias and the band (and produced by Rick Elias), I hear that same depressed beat and sluggish sound.
The one song I do like the music on is the Dylan-esque country/blues "Quoting Deuteronomy to the Devil". It's tongue-in-cheek lyrics is wonderfully set to backwoods blues; it's quite funky and a wonderful departure.
Hey, it's Rich Mullins singing his unique style of heartfelt devotional poetry -- and that's all good. The love and goodness of God are still wide open and faith is still a complex struggle of the heart and will. But I just don't find the music as compelling as the words, like I did before.
Hatching of a Heart.......2001-05-19
"Well the night was cold and my heart was hidden very safely in a shell but I knew somehow I'd have to run that risk, have to open up myself, but you said: Look at the stars on the face of the sky, they're the same ones Abraham saw. Come under my wings I will make you shine, give you strength enough to love." -Rich Mullins, "Hatching of a Heart"
Rich Mullins is among the greatest songwriters the world has ever seen...period. Brother's Keeper is just one more example of this.
The Heart of a Ragamuffin.......2000-10-22
Brother's Keeper is a great album. If I had a top ten albums of all time list, this CD would surely be included. Rich Mullins really expresses his heart on this album...and its the heart of a Ragamuffin.
I love all the songs on this album. Each one drips with worship, praise, love, and the hallmark of the Ragamuffin soul...the need for and expression of Grace.
All these songs express something of the love of God and the Ragamuffin's natural response of love for others. All the songs point straight to God and his love, righteousness, beauty, and kingdom-from following the example of Jesus' love and patience in the title track, to the message of God's unfolding kingdom in "Quoting Deuteronomy to the Devil." Each song expresses something about God in wonderfully unique ways.
Two of my favorite tracks are: "Hatching of a Heart"-a song that speaks about the tender care God shows to his children as they move and grow through this life, and "Cry the Name"-a beautiful expression of Colossians 3:2 (Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.)
This music is both beautiful and moving as well as meaningful. Every song...not just some.
I could go on and on about this album because I love it. It has helped me to draw nearer and nearer to the Father. It points the way (at least for me) to God's revealed word. Rich Mullins' writing is steeped in Biblical truths. Worship and love flow from this disc...
As I just said, I could go on...but I won't. In these few short lines I've written, I've come to realize how unequipped I am to describe this album. It is beyond me. All the same, I urge you to get a copy right now. It'll be beyond you too. But in a good way...I promise.

Back together...as good as ever?.......2006-10-07
I've only been a Fair Warning fan for a few years (I discovered them in 2003), but I'm a pretty rabid Fair Warning fan. This band's electrifying style of melodic rock blew me away, and I immediately sought out their other works, even though they had more or less split up at that point. So when I heard they had reunited and were releasing a new album, I immediately got my hopes up. How does Brother's Keeper, the band's first album in over five years, measure up? Read on.
More than any other band save perhaps Gotthard, Fair Warning has come to embody everything that is great about European melodic rock. All of the elements of Fair Warning's classic sound are present on Brother's Keeper. The album is upbeat, very melodic, and catchy as hell. It's also fairly well-written, though not quite at the same level as Fair Warning's previous albums. Album opener Don't Keep Me Waiting is a powerful rocker that is as good a song as the band has written, but it's followed by the somewhat odd Generation Jedi, which is the album's weakest track. It definitely picks up from there, but it seems like that song just killed the momentum. The rest of the songs are all quite good, but the album seems to be missing that element that made the other Fair Warning albums so powerful. It's as if by taking such a long hiatus, the band lost the spark that had been driving them previously.
I don't want to give the impression that Brother's Keeper is a bad album; far from it actually. It is a very good melodic hard rock album, and one that every Fair Warning fan should own. It may not be as awesome as Fair Warning's previous albums, but let's face it; the worst Fair Warning album is still going to be way better than the best efforts by just about every other melodic rock band!

Disembodied oh yeah........2000-10-24
Yo yo yo, the Disembodied side of this record is DOPE. The vocalist's voice is developing and he's beginning to sound a little like Brian from the all mighty Overcast. I really reccomend this record to all Disembodied fans. They also do a PHAT heavy tuned down Quicksand cover.
