5 out of 5 stars Family Force 5 -- A Force to be Reckoned with..........2007-06-26

Family Force 5 delivers an onslaught from the first second to the very end. It's a wall of sound from start to finish that is some of the most fun you're likely to ever hear (unless they ever release an equally good sophomore album, etc).

This is the perfect crank-it-up, piss off your neighbors, head-banging kind of music. And it's great to scream along to.

5 out of 5 stars What I've Been Looking For!.......2007-05-11

This cd is exactly what I have been looking for. Nice crunchy guitars, upbeat, and clean vocals. I just picked it up today, and I couldn't help but put my window down and turn the stereo up. I'm pushing 40, and this cd made me feel like I was in high school again. Great, great fun disc.

5 out of 5 stars best cd ever.......2007-05-08

i listen to this cd every single day. family force five is the absolute best!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Its GREAT!.......2007-05-07

Family Force 5 is one of the best bands out there! their music is super catchy and you'll wanna sing it all day long... I DO! Before I had heard FF5 I didnt really like the loud upbeat music, but these guys were just so good I couldnt help but wanna hear them again and again! so I bought the CD. Trust me if you are fun, crazy, and loud you will LOVE this CD!!!

4 out of 5 stars So I thought the 3 new tracks deserved a try..........2007-03-29

Before Diamond Edition came out, I had purchased their previous album containing all of the tracks off of Diamond Edition with the exception of 3. I purchased this new one mostly because I had found their music so catchy, and perhaps 3 new tracks would give me something new by them to listen to. What first was odd to me is the album art. Amazon displays a large black album art with a sparkly Family Force 5 logo. I opened up my package to find that mine did as well, but it's just wrapping that packages the CD case and you have to actually take that off. So all of a sudden I am introduced to a new album art: a red background, and a skull and crossbones (the crossbones being keyboards of some sort). I was surprised that Amazon wouldn't display the actual album art. Anxious to hear the 3 new tracks, I immediately popped the CD into my player. I have a quick review of each of the 3 tracks:

I Love You to Death - Cool guitaring, lyrics are a bit repetitive and cheesy, but the beat is really catchy. I'd give this one a 4/5.

Face Down - This is the song that I can't seem to get into. It doesn't sound much like Family Force 5 at all. I have listened to it many times to see if it would grow on me. It mostly seems like a filler song. I'd give it a 2/5.

Never Let Me Go - This is probably my favorite of the 3. Very catchy vocals and effects. Guitaring sounds great. Chorus is fun. Definitely a cool beat. Overall, 5/5.

Hope this helps anyone who has purchased Business Up Front, Party in the Back in the past and basically wants to know if 3 new tracks is worth the cash. I'd say I'm satisfied overall. It's great to hear something new from them.

5 out of 5 stars Gatlin Bros. Family Gospel Favorites.......2005-10-06

Very well done, for just three singers. One of few that carries "Whispering Hope", a favorite of one of our past relatives.

5 out of 5 stars Larry Gatlin & the Gatlin BrothersSing Their Family Gospel Favorites.......2005-08-30

We have almost every Gatlin CD available-This is one of the best--Songs done with different arrangements & are very singable --A mix of old hymns & the Gatlin standards. Really enjoy their version of "Love Lifted Me"

4 out of 5 stars Nice country gospel set!.......2005-01-02

This is a nice Christian country set, from a Top 40 commercial country act that was popular in the 1970s and '80s. Admittedly, Larry Gatlin is sounding a little long in the tooth and slightly shaky as a soloist, but their obvious sincerity and love of the music lifts this album up, and when they sing in an upbeat jubilee style, the Gatlins can really get your toes a-tappin'. There are also some slower ballads sung in a more modern Southern Gospel style, though almost all the songs are older traditional tunes like "Amazing Grace," "Rock Of Ages," Albert E. Brumley's "I'll Fly Away," etc. Another nice thing is that the musical backup is pretty restrained: they just have the band play as much is necessary to get the message across, and leave the emphasis on their vocals and on the words, which is really where is belongs. Gospel fans and Gatlin fans alike should enjoy this record quite a bit.

4 out of 5 stars Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers Family Gospel Favorites.......2004-11-10

XM Satellite Radio Channel "America" recently promoted this album on their "Stained Glass" program. The featured selection was "Let the Lower Lights Be Burning"---a moving rendition of the tradition hymn. Larry Gatlin was interviewed by the host. NOBODY mentioned that "Lower Lights" is NOT contained in Family Gospel Favorites. This was a misrepresentation of the new album. Caveat emptor---I did not double-check the song list when I ordered the album---my fault. But now I am disappointed that a "promised" song is missing.

From the first stentorian battle call of the shofar (ram's horn) to the excerpt from a famous Billy Graham speech and the standard it inspired--the Louvin Brothers' "Are You Afraid to Die"--it's obvious that Ricky Skaggs isn't just out to soothe souls, but to save them. Naturally the outspoken Christian fundamentalist delves deeply into his bluegrass roots for supernal inspiration on his first all-gospel album. He serves up fervent renditions of bluegrass-gospel favorites like Ralph Stanley's "The Darkest Hour," Bill Monroe's "Remember the Cross," and the Bill Carlisle-penned, Flatt & Scruggs-covered "Gone Home," but Skaggs also finds inspiration in contemporary gospel tunes like "The Joshua Generation," which features a soaring Crosby, Stills & Nash-style vocal finale. Yet the most amazing cut is "Seven Hillsides," a song that vividly chronicles an Appalachian preacher's overwhelming self-doubt and sense of inadequacy as he prepares to minister to his congregation's immense and tragic losses. Like much of this lovely and aggressively inspirational collection, "Seven Hillsides" speaks to the humanity and spirituality in just about all of us--hardcore Christian and closet agnostic alike. --Bob Allen

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Christian Country/Blugrass at its Finest.......2005-12-09

Interesting blend of materials, featuring old & new songs. Great pickin', as you would expect from a Ricky Skaggs project. Plaintive, hearfelt blugrass singing throughout. Liked the mixture of songs in 3/4 time, songs in minor keys and of course, the blugrass toe tappers. The Billy Graham intro does well to set up "Are You Afraid to Die" as an eternal question humanity must face.

5 out of 5 stars Shreds of his Soul in Every Musical Note.......2004-05-18

Par excellent! Skaggs has left bits and traces of his eternal soul in every lyrical note recorded on this very creamy CD recording. No matter his musical offerings in the past, he has thoroughly outdone himself this time. The strains of bluegrass mixed with Gospel tunes ring the bell of the heart of the listener, appealing to man's inner void that can only be filled by God the Father. The message of the cross has its own magical mystique ("anointing") that draws men and women, boys and girls to its base for life-giving strength. Yet, it matters who died on that cross--as Paul said, Jesus Christ and Him Crucified. You set the crucifixion of the lamb of God into motion, and you won't have to worry about any resurrection. One follows the other. Jesus did an heroic work and authored a book to tell about it. He taught us that where we are weak, then we are strong. No one in his right mind would have ever concocted that a lamb would defeat a wolf! Jesus showed us that meekness and humility is the theme of life. We lose our lives--our pride, our machismo, our works and efforts to save--and we lay them at Jesus' feet. And guess what? Those things that we used to work to do (man-made morality) in order to please God and failed at miserably, turn up later to be fulfilled in real time through us as the Holy Spirit lives holiness and righteousness through us. Those habits that we could not shake fall when we come to Jesus, "all we who are weak and heavily burdened (trying to please God through works, etc.) and [he gives us] rest." Lose your life and you find it. Try to stop sinning before you get to the cross, and you can't. But, then put your faith in the Finished work of Christ, and amazingly, the sin stops because that root desire for the sin is itself gone.
This is the cross of which Ricky Skaggs sings. This cross makes you want to love everybody, even the unlovable. Whatever you do, challenge yourself to get this CD because each song will lift up Jesus, and after all, for you fellow Christians out there, isn't that what the Holy Spirit came to do. I highly recommend the song "Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?"

5 out of 5 stars This is so much fun!.......2004-02-24

I bought this CD for my husband who really enjoys bluegrass, and now it is our absolute favorite. I can hardly keep myself from dancing when we turn it on! We listen to it all the time. ALL of the songs are great, which is unusual for any CD. It's a fun way to hear an important message.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2003-04-29

I have had this CD for several weeks, and I keep "discovering" new and wonderful songs on it. Another reviewer mentioned eclectic tastes - mine run from bluegrass and southern gospel to Jazz (especially Charley Parker, Ella, and Coltrane) and classical (especially Beethoven and Shostakovich - I love string quartets). However, I got it this album first for its traditional gospel songs, primarily "Hallelujah, I'm Ready to Go" (which I was working on for my own bluegrass group, where I play the string bass and sing). When it comes to gospel, I generally prefer the older songs.

Then, last weekend I "discovered" the lead song "Soldier of the Cross", which I had previously dismissed. This is what I mean: I am really starting to enjoy the range of different kinds of music on this CD, and you will too. I also really appreciate Ricky's obvious deep Christian convictions (of which I had not previously been aware); he writes a moving dedication to Christian warriors throughout the centuries that you've got to read.

    5 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS CD!.......2003-02-11

I have an eclectic taste in music --- I really do love all kinds of music... I like EVERYTHING from "Charlie Daniel's "Long Haired Country Boy" to Michael Martin Murphy's "Oh Bury Me Not On the Lone Prairie". I like everything from Gordon Lightfoot's haunting "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" to Neil Young's "Keep On Rockin in the Free World". I like all kinds of gospel music too - everything from Jars of Clay's "Tea and Sympathy" to Fernando Ortega's "Lord of Eternity". However, I must admit that Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder project "Soldier of the Cross" really gets my heart racing and my toe tapping. I very much appreciate the always great traditional songs such as "Were You There" to the less traditional "The Joshua Generation" I will admit that I have a particular weakness for a good ballad - as one who has had the responsibility of Shepherding the Flock of God I especially appreciate "Seven Hillsides" which gives insight into the lonely heart of a preacher with the unenviable task of conducting funerals for the sons and fathers who were lost to the tragedy of war.

and Kirk are the real news...12 years after the fact.
To say that this material has stood the test of a decade would be gross understatement. The arrangements are outstanding, harmonies phat and tight.
Fun as the newer hip hop material is (through which I discovered the earlier work), Kirk is so solidly a proponent of the original idiom... as well as an extension of it.
Wow.The first and last cuts on the CD are the ones that I play over and over.

      5 out of 5 stars What a blessing.......2003-07-29

This album is a total blessing. I have been listening to it over and over for the past three weeks since seeing the Crabb Family in concert at the Brooklyn Tabernacle. The vocals are top notch and such gems as Through The Fire, Please Forgive Me and Covered in Red will touch your soul over and over again. The Crabb Family are a nice mix of southern gospel, country and a splash of black gospel. What a blessed family!

5 out of 5 stars Boy, is "Anon.Country Fan" OFF KEY!!!.......2007-06-03

First of all, let me address that "Anon.Fan's" comments. Aside from the incorrect grammar and spelling, which I can overlook. Where has this "NON-FAN" been? Did it not hear about The Crabb Family's Grammy nominations and the many, many, Dove awards won by the Family and by Jason Crabb? What about their multi-talented father, Gerald Crabb, who not only wrote "Through the Fire" but also numerous other VERY SUCCESSFUL hits on every CD they've recorded, with the exception of "Blur the Lines". Not only did Gerald write all of those glorious lyrics, he also wrote all of the music. You need to check out the facts before you dog a group who has paid their dues. AND, it wouldn't hurt for you to listen to one of Jason's or Gerald's or Aaron's or Adam's CHRISTIAN TESTIMONIES.
These people are the real deal. They are not only talented, but they are also children of God who are living the right life. Now for the review of this CD. It's extremely hard to pick a favorite on this one because so many are so good. Jason's "I'd Rather Have Jesus" is sung straight from the soul and it is GREAT. Then, there's Adam's "Friend of God"...boy does this one get the house rocking! "Holding Out Hope to You" by Aaron is another great rendition. Then there's their beautiful sister, Terah Penhollow, who, by-the-way, glows when she sings on "I Go to the Rock". For the "Anon.Fan", who thinks they aren't attractive, take a look at Kelly Bowling, Mike's wife and Terah's sister. Not only is she beautiful, she does a great performance on "Call on Jesus" and her testimony is also straight from the heart. Jason also does a wonderful performance of "Redeemer"...this really exhibits his powerful voice. What a talent he is! Check out the facts "Anon" and get them straight before you write another review. God will forgive you for your errors, all you need to do is ask.

      5 out of 5 stars Truly annointed.......2007-03-01

Jason Crabb visited our church a few months ago and sang during worship service. My husband and I were blown away. Little did we know, he was part of an awesome, spirit-filled group (we usually listen to more contemporary christian-rock music.) I had no idea how big they are. I saw the previews to the Dove Awards and there was a clip of Jason on there so I began searching for him online. They are nominated for at least 4 awards this year, one being Artist of the Year. Funny how God throws those little coincidences at you every once in a while.

      5 out of 5 stars E Snipes/Winterfest Made A Believer Out of Me!!!!!!.......2007-02-28

I agree with Dudley. Anonymous "Country Fan" has serious issues. REALLY SERIOUS ISSUES!!!!! I recently returned from Winterfest in Branson MO. Winterfest is a weekend retreat for teens from several states. To make a long story short, the Crabb Family headlined on Friday night and they rocked. I was honestly upset about them being there at first b/c I thought they were too "country" or "old fashioned" for the teens at Wnterfest. I WAS WRONG!!!!!! The Crabb Family played a set with a live band and they tore the roof off that auditorium!!! I looked around several times and the vast majority of kids there (roughly 2,000) were really into the show. A couple of the Crabb Family brothers even played their own instruments as well. Specifically the guitar and harmonica. Let me tell you those boys could play. After the show, I would say more than half of our youth group was at the Crabb Family's table. They were annointed and on fire for the Lord. Jason Crabb, the lead singer even did the Saturday moring sermon and he did an excellent job with that too. Don't listen to "Anonymous" find wherever the Crabb Family is playing live and check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Crabb Family is the best.......2006-12-23

This is one of my favorite cd's from the Crabb Family. They are one of the best groups out there.

5 out of 5 stars Blessed by The Crabb Family Music.......2006-12-21

Our family loves the Crabb family singers. Not sure 'who' that person is that is writing negative comments on everything belonging to The Crabb family, but it must be someone with an axe to grind and nothing to do with truly knowing who the Crabb Family is and enjoying Christian southern gospel. The Crabb Family has truly blessed my husband and I with their spirit-filled music. My favorite song of all time is "Through the Fire".

      5 out of 5 stars Great Job.......2006-11-28

I was amazed by the hate I found in the Anonymous "Country Music Fan" review. I noticed she placed a hate filled review on everyone of their cd's. It is fine to not like a style of music or a particular artist, which is after all what America is all about, freedom of choice. But why go to the level of saying things like the girls are not attractive, and these people would never make it in the secular world. Thank God Almighty that The Crabb Family is a Christian group more concerned with saving souls then trying to promote a glamour image. The last I knew no one in America put a gun to anyone's head and forced them to buy a CD. Maybe, Anonymous "Country Music Fan", if you opened up your heart God might speak to you through the music of the Crabb Family. The names of artist you mentioned have produced some nice music. But if you really knew music like you thought you would be recommending, Bach, Handel, Mozart or Beethoven. Or orchestras like Cincinnati, Cleveland, Chicago, London & Amsterdam. Or what about conductors such as, Leonard Bernstein, Robert Shaw, James Levine, Ton Koopman. If you have some spare time check out a "Music Appreciation Call" it would be money well spent.

      P.S.
What happened Anonymous "Country Music Fan" Wouldn't they let you in the group?

1 out of 5 stars Trying to make money!.......2006-11-16

To me, the Crabb family are a bunch of kids who found a way to make a fast buck! They figure that the Christian people are so stupid that they'll buy anything! The Crabb family wants your money, and it sounds like it too when they sing (they don't even sing well!) They can't hardly sing, the women in the group are extremely unactractive, my God, they wouldn't sell a damn thing in the secular industry! Get a life, and buy someone who cares about what they are singing and not just the MONEY! These Losers found a way to make a fast buck without working their a** off for it! SAVE YOUR MONEY and buy someone good like Karen Wheaton, Juanita Bynum, Karen Peck, Ralna English, etc.

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2005-12-07

I am always amazed at new Crabb Family recordings. I think I know what to expect, but they always seem to come up with something new and something great. This CD is no exception. There is literally something for everyone on this album. You will hear some Country Gospel, Southern Gospel, Inspirational, and some Black Gospel. This is an album with a lot of variety. It is an interesting concept, because the Crabb Family is trying to broaden their fan base by reaching a more diverse audience with the Gospel of Christ. If this CD is any indication, then they are accomplishing their goal.

The CD opens with "Promised Land", a country sounding tune featuring Kelly. You'll even hear a touch of a mandolin in the track. It's a song of hope and encouragement. "The Shepherd's Call" is a nice ballad featuring Jason. It gives a new reflection of the ninety and nine sheep that were safe and how the Shepherd left them to find that one lost soul.

"Sacrifice Of Praise" would fit into any modern Praise and Worship service. This is one song that shows the diversity of Gerald Crabb's song writing. Adam does a nice job interpreting this song. Aaron is featured on one of my favorite songs on the CD, "My Keeper," a thought provoking song making you think about all the times that God has saved you from perilous situations. This one has a great message. For those of you looking for some of that traditional Southern Gospel sound, "Good Day," "Walk Away" and "Rahab" will suit your fancy. "Rahab" was co-written by Gerald Crabb and Jason Crabb. You had better have a box full of Kleenex ready when Jason sings "Forever". This one is a tie for my favorite song on the CD. Dads and daughters will both be sobbing at the end of this song, but it's a good one. This song deals with saying goodbye in a couple of different ways. "You Can't Imagine", co-written by Gerald Crabb and Sue Smith is a beautiful ballad of thanksgiving. "He Came Looking For Me" has a real catchy swing to it. You may just catch yourself swaying as you listen to this one. Wrapping up the CD is a remake of "Through The Fire," however when they added guest soloist Donnie McClurkin, it added even a little more fire if possible.

This CD is just what any Crabb Family fan could want and it is enough to make fans out of someone who has never heard the Crabb Family. This CD is must have and you may even want two or three to keep from fighting over who gets to listen to it.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome Group.......2005-10-07

The Crabb Family is a great group. They are one of the best southern gospel groups around. Their album Driven is one of my favorites. It is very similar to the older ones but there are a few new things that make it great. One of the older albums called The Walk has a song called He is greater that is really good. It is the song that made The Walk, but now there is a song called Sacrifice of Praise. It is one of the best songs that the Crabb Family has done. It made the Driven cd the best.
My two favorite tunes on this cd are Promised Land and Sacrifice of Praise. Promised Land is a very upbeat song that talks about a place we all can't wait to get. It is talking about heaven and how wonderful it is going to be. Sacrifice of praise is just a song to get you and makes you praise our wonderful God. When you are down listen to these songs and it will really lift your spirits. Both of these songs have the thing that helps you know who they are. It has the great guitar, drum and piano solos. They all have that awesome intro of these instruments.
Most of the lyrics they have are all consistent. They all worship our Lord. There is one song on Driven that is different. It still has the positive message but it talks about the relationship between a father and daughter. How their relationship will always be there even when he is gone.
I love the Crabb Family because they are awesome singers. To go with their voices they have awesome solos of piano, guitar, and a little banjo. If you love upbeat music with instrument solos then Driven is the cd for you.
The Gaither Vocal band is also very similar to The Crabbs. They have upbeat worship songs that get to your heart and lift your spirits. If you choice the Crab Family "Driven" or "The Walk"; or a Gaither Local Band cd your ears will be very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT SOUNDING GROUP WITH BEAUTIFUL VOICES.......2005-02-04

THEIR SONG, HE CAME LOOKING FOR ME, REACHES THE DEBTHS OF ONES HEART.
A GREAT GROUP OF YOUNG GOSPEL SINGERS.......
