Loreena McKennitt's "songs for the season" are haunting for their beauty and her fascinating voice. Blending traditional Irish music with worldbeat and New Age-like instrumentation, McKennitt's arrangements are at once elegant and eloquent, enchanting and familiar, whether she's singing "Coventry Carol," "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen," or "Good King Wenceslas." "Snow," adapted from a 19th-century poem, and the traditional "Seeds of Love" are so lofty and deep they reach almost mystical places. --Martin Keller
Customer Reviews:
ok, THIS is Loreena McKennitt's CHRISTMAS Album.......2007-06-16
Everyone considers Loreena McKennitt's "To Drive the Cold Winter Away" her Christmas album. I ask people not to call it that, it is more than that, it is music for the whole season from leaf-fall to buds and sprouts in the spring.
This, then, is her Christmas album. Although short, at only five songs, it is a well thought-out album, and a definite "Must-Have" and a "Keeper". The songs here are wonderful, not your standard fare for Christmas, so it is a fresh experience, something always welcome with music for this time of the year, don't you think? Her accompanyment, here, is harp only, so everything is light and open, just right, and soothing after all the crash and bang regular Christmas music......I mean, how many times can one listen to Silver Bells, Jingle Bells, and Here Comes Santa Claus before you just wanna scream "STOP!", huh?
Pick this album up, take it home, and slip in between some other Christmas albums, and be prepared to go "WOW!....That's Nice!", and to also find a new favorite Christmas album. ~operabruin
Great Artist!.......2007-05-14
This is an awesome holiday / winter / Christmas CD. It is short (only 5 songs) but it is full of voice and enough to set the mood perfectly. Not traditional versions of the songs, but none the less beautiful.
wonderful.......2007-01-20
This is THE Christmas album to have.Loreena McKennitt's hauntingly beautiful voice and the wonderful arrangements of traditional Christmas songs has made this our most listened to Christmas album in the last few years.I like to play this album any time of the year as it is very peaceful and relaxing to hear.
a winter garden.......2007-01-11
I love Loreena McKennitts' music. this CD is very melodic in a Celtic way. the music on this CD is also very mellow listening. I love the rhythms of the instruments used.
beautiful!.......2006-12-31
The only reason I gave this item "4 stars" is because it only has the 5 songs on it - I wish it had more. However, it's still worth buying. The songs are hauntingly beautiful, in McKennitt's signature style. If you enjoy her music, this album won't disappoint. I recommend it! :-)

Total Praise.......2005-09-29
This album is an absolute must have!!!! Israel has got to be one of the most annointed praise and worship leaders (let's not forget New Breed because they are powerful as well). I've had the honor of seeing them minister, in an amusement park no less, and the spirit of God moved in such a mighty way. That just proves that when you're annointed it doesn't matter where you are, the mountain top or valley low, God will move as you minister. Live from Another Level is a cherished collectible too. Powerful man of God!!!!
Response.......2005-09-25
This is one of the most brilliantly done debut albums ever!!! And, a lot of people don't even know that Israel is an original member of Fred Hammond's Radical For Christ...
One of the Hottest Praise and Worship Albums ever.......2005-09-13
I love Israel & New Breed.Their ability to capture what so many people want to say to their God and Father is ridiculous. They definitely have a sound of their own.I would love to see Fred Hammond and RFC do some type of compilation with this group.
Absolutely Awesome!.......2005-07-22
This is the best live gospel album I've ever heard! It's very uplifting and soulful. Israel has a beautiful voice that is enhanced by his amazing choir. I also love the range of genres that Israel included in this album. This is a must-buy!
acceptable. not exceptional........2005-03-22
one may notice the similarities between israel haughton and fred hammond. that is quite simple to explain.
the same singers, and possibly musicians.
mr. haughton, himself, was actually working with fred hammond in the past. why they no longer are together eludes me, but that is trivial.
having heard mr. haughton sing up close and personally, i hold him in high esteem. he's among my favorite singers and arrangers. this album, however, disappointed me slightly. the upbeat praise tracks, 'who is like the lord' through 'trading my sorrows,' show an original flavor. one that may OCCASIONALLY resemble a carribean style. through these, you see that he and new breed have been blessed with the ability to reach beyond the racial boundaries that separate CCM and more urban gospel music. ['trading my sorrows' is a spicy cover of a song from the 'other side of religious music,' if you will.]
after that track, i'm lost, unfortunately. the rest of the album tends to sound cliché, almost like a desparate attempt at sounding contemporary. when one puts effort into making a certain sound, it can come off as insincere, so i recommend tracks one through four on this album.

The funniest Schickele piece ever!.......2006-05-23
My experience with the 1712 Overture is similar to Victoria's (in another review). I was listening to the car radio when I heard the dissonant pile-up halfway through, and almost drove off the Interstate.
It should be noted that the Amazon listing is incorrect. The 1712 Overture is in reality conducted by "Walter Bruno" who is actually David Zinman. It is most assuredly not conducted by Bruno Walter (can you imagine that?), who died in 1962.
Highly recommended.
P D Q on form again.......2005-07-20
P D Q has quite a cult following among the 'cognoscenti', and others may know some of his works without being aware of it or why. Much of this is fun listening if you have that kind of mind &/or background, and has the virtual ring of period authenticity.
Classical music, like any living corpus of cultural tradition (eg religion, sport & politics) should be well capable of laughing at itself. Others have done so successfully (Hoffnung, Spike Jones, the Comedy Harmonists et al.) and PDQ follows in a worthy & rollicking tradition!
beware of the organ cadenza!.......2005-05-18
This is my favourite PDQ Bach collection. The 1712 Overture alone is worth the price of admission. The use of the motif from 'I Ain't Got No Home' is inspired and the skewering of 'Day Tripper' reduces me to helpless giggles every time.
Einstein on the Fritz is a tonic to anyone sick of the pretentious meanderings of Philip Glass, Taverner et al. And Cappricio La Poucelle de New Orleans (engineered by Burt Bach, a living direct decendant of JS Bach) is frighteningly intense, as well as hysterical. These musicians are also terrific - the pieces wouldn't work at all otherwise. And who couldn't love the rapturous intro to The Preachers of Crimetheous - featuring the most incredible percussion playing since Ginger Baker's 'Toad'.
All in all, this is a completely ridiculous delight!
Another assault to your funny bone!.......2004-04-12
P Schickele does it yet again! He successfullly skewers the classics again. My personal fave is Einstein On The Fritz, where he does a wonderful job of spoofing Philip Glass.....Only the Prof. is so twisted as to be able to sneak in 'Three Blind Mice" in the middle of a Glassian composition!
PDQ Bach at his best (worst).......2001-11-13
Mr. Schickele is a genius, he's taken music history and disgraced it, apocryphally!
the 1712 overture pokes fun at just about every type of music out there, and what the 1712 doesn't defile, the rest of the tracks on this CD pick up the slack.
This incredibly irreverent album is a must for music lovers everywhere!
Get yourself a copy! You won't be disappointed!

Album Description
Maserati features members of !!!, LCD Soundsystem, The Juan Maclean, and Turning Machine. "Inventions" is a sweaty, delirious mix of mid-to-late 70s Pink Floyd, German psych-rock, Krautrock, and mid-80s action film scores. It drags the glory years of psychedelic arena rock kicking and screaming into the 21st Century, with the pomposity (and vocals) carefully removed. The mix is pushed firmly in the red, giving the songs a white-knuckled energy that, coupled with the ethereal guitar theatrics, puts one foot on the dance floor and the other on the ocean floor. For fans of Neu, Battles, Pink Floyd, Trans Am.

The pop Christmas album is a lost art everywhere but in the country-western arena. You don't see today's rock acts reeling off sets of religious standards the way you used to--which is probably for the best. But even within the whole country milieu, since album release schedules aren't as fast-paced and casual as they once were, a good seasonal CD is something to latch onto. What we have here is a Christmas album of solid construction, packed with traditional songs and old-Nashville chestnuts. No surprises and no smash hits, but that's not what it's about. --Gavin McNett
Customer Reviews:
A GREAT COLLECTION OF COUNTRY CHRISTMAS.......2006-11-11
I've heard much said about the commercialization of Christmas. People go back and forth on the issue and, as far as I can tell, nothing, as far as music is concerned, has been effectively settled.
Enter Garth Brooks and his Christmas offering on the album, BEYOND THE SEASON. My purpose here is not to weigh in on whether Brooks should have or should not have added Christmas music to his stellar discography. Rather, looking at the album flat on, we see one of the best Christmas albums available for celebrating the season country style.
Brooks is in perfect voice as he presents traditional favorites like "Go Tell It on the Mountain", "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", "White Christmas" and "Silent Night." Add to that new offerings like "The Friendly Beasts" and "Santa Looked a Lot Like Daddy" and you have a Christmas tradition for this season and many more to come. Great collection of country Yuletide music.
THE HORSEMAN
As far as Christmas albums go, this is one of the better ones........2006-08-22
No matter who's doing the singing, most Christmas albums have the same ol' same ol' that we've all heard countless times at Christmas parties, in department stores, on Christmas movies and the radio from the end of November to the end of December. As a former salesperson in a retail store who had to listen to those songs 8 hours a day, six days a week, it's a wonder I can stand any Christmas music. At least with Garth you get a talented singer and some great versions of the same ol' same ol'. My personal favorite on the album is Santa Looked a Lot Like Daddy. This is the only single artist Christmas album I own and I think it will stay that way.
the worst of all time.......2005-11-29
brooks is way overrated no matter what he does he is only a country elvis he is only a performer not a muscian not a songrighter he is retired which is rightly so he sucks any questions
Garth Brooks- Beyond The Seasons Album.......2005-11-28
I have listen to many Christmas albums and I have to say that this has to be the very best one that I have ever listend to. It has all of the Christmas favorites (Silient Night, Let It Snow, White Christmas)
A Classic Christmas Record.......2005-11-26
Garth Brooks is (needless to say) one of the biggest stars ever in music. His record sales are (again needless to say) up there with Elvis, The Beatles and Elton John.
This album reached the top 3 back in Christmas 1992 and was still in the charts in the summer of 1993!! It's no surprise. This has to be one of the greatest Christmas CD's ever recorded.
The album opens with "Go Tell It On The Mountain", a story about the first ever Christmas, Brooks gives it his best shot and it works really well.
Oddly enough this album was recorded in July of 1993 in order to get it ready in time for Christmas. In an interview Brooks said he and his band put festive decorations up in the studio to make it feel like it was actually Christmas. This probably helped the sound of the album, such as the next two songs "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" (an old Christmas classic) and "The Old Man's Back In Town" (an original Garth Brooks written Christmas tune) that is about another of the worlds most famous men - Santa Claus.
"The Gift" is a story of when Jesus was young, and about how people bring him gifts and the main focus is on a poor orphan girl, who ends up bringing a gift fit for the king of kings. It may sound corny, but it works really well and it is Christmas after all, so it's allowed.
The next track is "Unto You This Night". This is probably my favorite cut on the album if only for Garth's singing. He performs at his best and puts his heart and soul into this song. Backed by a gospel choir, this is very, very seasonal.
Next up, is one of the most popular songs of the season. "White Christmas". It is also one of the most covered songs of all-time. The first version was by Bing Crosby and since that time it has been recorded by almost everyone in the business from Kenny Rogers and Elvis Presley, to Orville The Duck and New Kids On The Block!
Garth's rendition of this song is first rate and even features an Elvis-like impersonation (at the very, very end), however, mostly it is pure Garth.
"The Friendly Beasts" is a story about the animals of the world recalling the story of Jesus as we get to hear various band members and co-songwriters vocal duet with Garth. This is a very interesting track, though probably not the best.
"Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy" (written by Country legend, Buck Owens) is kinda Rock N Roll. It's a nice look through a young kids eyes when he sees who he thinks is Santa putting out presents on the night before Christmas. ("Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy, Or Daddy looks a lot like him. It's not the way I had him pictured, Santa was much too thin").
The next track is "Silent Night", another one of the most popular Christmas songs and/or hymns ever. Brooks once again does a great version and even included is a recollection of his favorite Christmas. (Spoken during an instrumental break).
Mary's Dream is a 60 second instrumental (short but sweet) that then takes us to the final song, "What Child Is This". Another story of Jesus' birth and another favorite of the season.
All in all, you can't go wrong with this CD. A must for all fans of Garth, Country Music, Christian music and Christmas music.

Awesome.......2006-11-20
I have listened to this (as an LP) since it first came out in 1968 as a thirteen year old Tiger fan. It still gives me goosebumps all over my body listening to Ernie then (and presently)! I gave it five stars since I couldn't go for ten! Go get 'em Tigers!
Memory Lane.......2006-07-22
The quality is circa 68; but just hearing ernie harwell calling some of the games is worth it! Plus, I just love the sone ... "we're all behind our baseball team, go get 'em tigers, world series bound and picking up steam..."
National "past"-time.......2003-10-20
As a native Detroiter, I loved this album as a kid. I've rediscovered it as an adult on this CD and couldn't be happier hearing the familiar old voice of Ernie Harwell calling plays from a championship season. It is pure joy listening. A must for all Tigers fans.
Great clips, but...........2000-04-21
This CD had some wonderful clips of the 1968 Tiger season brought to life by Ernie Harwell and Ray Lane. However, the narrated segments between the game clips often had background music that became very overpowering. It was frustrating to try to listen to narration about the season only to have it drowned out by loud, obnoxious "background" music. The CD could have done without the music, period. Whoever mixed this CD must have been incompetent. If you can ignore the annoyance of having music overpower the narration and concentrate on the wonderful clips of Harwell and Lane calling some exciting moments and interviewing Tiger players like Bill Freehan, Al Kaline, Jim Northrup and Jim Price, there is a lot to enjoy here.

Amazon.com essential recording
Nineteen eighty-seven's Sundance Season was released at the height of Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai's creative powers and is the first of two recordings done at Lindisfarne Mountain Retreat in Colorado (the other being Desert Dance). While Desert Dance is a solid representation of Nakai's diverse talents, Sundance Season emits a more inspired, alive energy, perhaps due to the Sun Dance festival that took place near Lindisfarne during recording time. Nakai's flute meditations on this collection emote relaxing, centered prayer while his chant and gentle, low drumming seamlessly blend in an added ancient dimension. Particular standouts include "White Shell Dreams" with its cleansing sounds of a fresh rain shower and the Tibetan bell on "Ritual I" and "Ritual II," uniquely bringing forth a peaceful awakening. The solo on the eagle-bone whistle mixed with Nakai's lovely baritone voice provide a pure, golden finish. One of Nakai's best. --Karen Karleski
Album Description
The Sun Dance ritual is the subject for R. Carlos Nakai's Sundance Season. The Sun Dance celebrates and honors man's relationship with Mother Earth. Nakai explains that tribal dancers in the ritual are encouraged to concentrate on their reasons for dancing and to meditate on the orderliness of life. Nakai's original melodies arise from the themes of the sacred traditions: On Eagle's Wings, (meditations on the scintillating flight of the golden eagle), Light Waves, (recurring phenomenon of light refracting through water droplets, manifesting as rainbow paths), and Water Bearer (reaffirming the essence of life upon this small dust speck orbiting a very small star). The inspired playing by Nakai of the wooden flute, together with vocal chanting, drumming, and the lonely sound of the eagle bone whistle, brings to life this celebration of creation.

exellent pick.......2007-03-10
this album(DVD) sooths your soul. i would recomend this DVD for all those that are looking for inner peace from a long day of stress, this music is the best way to take a peaceful journey of rest!!
Carlos Nakai - Sundance Season CD.......2007-01-30
This was a replacement CD...we completely wore out our first one. My husband turns it on every night when he goes to bed. We have a second one that we keep in the Jeep to listen to when we are riding through the Smoky Mountains. It is a wonderful CD and I recommend it to everyone who enjoys Native American music!
Sacred Music.......2006-05-26
This is music of an entirely different level from almost everything that one hears in the modern world. In a sense it is more prayer than music. You stop, you listen, you begin to contemplate sacred things. This is appropriate, since the underlieing theme is the great ritual of the Sun Dance. This is music to cross between the worlds.
Carlos Nakai is the finest master of the traditional Native American flute that I have ever heard. He is almost supernaturally good. Yet, somehow the accoustics of the Lindisfarne Chapel manages to make him sound even better than usual.
Still love this album..........2002-03-17
I had a copy of this recording nearly 15 years ago and ran across it again recently. I still find it to be one of R. Carlos Nakai's best recordings.
Beautiful.......2001-03-28

Witty and Charming.......2000-08-15
This CD is fun and action packed as much as you could hope for in a CD. He uses quotes from many famous folk and classical songs and implements them into his own compositions with a bit of a twist. For example, in Classical rap, where he raps about being the best rapper in the world with terrific brass interludes between the verses. The orchestra plays a clip from Vivaldi's "Spring" and then he twists it into a record "wicky-wicky" to the same tune. He introduces every peice before it is played in a hilarious manner in which he talks about the peice and something else that was going on in the composers mind as he wrote the peice. Starting at the begining-
This is Professor Pete- Peter Schickele introduces himself as well as P.D.Q.
1712 Overture- A takeoff of the 1812 overture of course, with snatches of some famous folktunes thrown in here and there.
Oedipus Tex- A parady of the Greek Myth Oedipus Rex where he murders his father who is the King. Oedipus Tex lives a life like his brother but in Texas style.
The next tracks are more comedy than exactly music like the WTWP station giving options over the phone about how you would like to hear a certain peice of music. Cooking French... is a woman cooking a French gourmet meal but flubbing up the entire time.
What I have already said pretty much sums it up. The rest of the tracks are equally hilarious and as witty as all the others. If you buy this CD you will not regret it no matter what type of music you listen to.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful, Romantic Music!.......2006-09-09
Like many others, I discovered this CD because of Sex in the City and LOVE it. If "Anna" is the song that appeals to you, you'll be absolutely swept away by Regina Carter's Paganini, which is exquisite and was also played on the show.
Sex and the City.......2006-04-08
Looks like a good bit of people bought this for the same reason. Anna from the end episode "La Douleur Exquise!" of season 2 of Sex and the City. Aparently other songs from teh CD were in the show too.
I had to do a good bit of googling before I finally found out the song and artist. Listening to the whole song is no disappointment...
...however the other CDs advertized by this artest seem inordinanly different... I heard somewhere that this song was made because it did a better job of representing what the artists grandmother would have liked (who gave him everything she owned when she passed away simply because she loved the fact that he wanted to study music)...
Anyhow, the end result was a very good song.
Quite brilliant!.......2005-09-09
Like a lot of other people, my intention in purchasing this album was to hear the 'Anna' track that I had heard and fallen for on a particular Sex and the City episode. Turns out the rest of the tracks are just as magnificent. I'd highly recommend this to anyone seeking some truly touching and pleasant sounds.
Beautiful.......2005-08-18
I first heard Gunnar Madsen on Sex and the City. I couldn't figure out what song it was, but I would play it over and over with Carrie's voice over and everything. Then I figured out it was "Anna" and a moment later bought this CD. It is better than I expected, only having heard "Anna." I play this CD all the time. It is perfect for when I'm reading, driving, cooking, doing anything. It's fabulous!
I just got this CD on a lark, and I love it.......2004-12-05
This CD is amazing, It is my favorite music to cook to, and I am a great cook. Wonderful. I am buying one for my mom now.
