Gorgeous voice, poor production........2006-10-21

All I knew of DB was the big hit which everyone knows, and that's here along with a whole string of pleasant tracks.
The backing music does sound exceptionally formulaic and very 70s country production line, but her voice salvages them for the most part.
One thing that drives me nuts - that loud and clumsy burst of flutes near the start of You Light Up My Life. Is that meant to be there or is it a bad remastering? It stands out a mile and then disappears.

Daughter-in-law of a legend........2005-07-22

Debby Boone is a great one to sing these songs of her mother-in-law, Rosemary Clooney. Here we have the talants of two professional singers on one Compact Disc. I own most of the recordings of Rosemary Clooney. She was one great lady when it came to performing by singing or in films. She will be missed by many since she passed away. I am one of these wno miss her, because I looked forward to each of her new releases. A superb performance.

More than just "You Light Up My Life" ..........2004-09-22

The success of "You Light Up My Life" is undeniable - 10 weeks at #1, Song Of The Year at the Grammys and Oscars and multiformat success (#1 A/C, #4 Country) that is sadly rare on today's narrowly programmed radio stations. Unfortunately, the song was too huge which, along with Boone's image, hindered any subsequent singles from succeeding at Top 40 radio. But, she is not the one-hit wonder many believe she is as this CD attests. Boone increasingly focused on Country as her success in Pop waned. This resulted in seven Top 25 hits including the #1 "Are You On The Road To Lovin' Me Again."

This CD adequately compiles many of Boone's singles. However, this collection is far from complete. Some of Boone's singles - "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" (#48 Country), "In Memory Of Your Love" (#61 Country), "See You In September" (#41 Country, #45 A/C) - never appeared on her studio albums. Only "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" is included here. Some of Boone's other singles - "California" (#50 Pop, #20 A/C), "Breakin' In A Brand New Broken Heart" (#25 Country), "Take It Like A Woman" (#44 Country), "It'll Be Him" (#46 Country) - are also excluded from this CD. With Boone's catalog out of print, this compilation would have been the ideal place to chronicle all, not just most, of her hits. You certainly cannot beat this CD's price and the songs included are Boone's most memorable singles. But, there would have been ample room on this CD to make it a true "Best Of."

Living up to her pedigree.......2004-02-08

The daughter of pop singer Pat Boone and maternal granddaughter of country singer Red Foley, Debby proves on this collection that she has absorbed all those musical influences.

This collection covers the period 1977 to 1980, during which time Debby had enormous success in America. You light up my life spent many weeks at number one in the American pop charts and also made the top five in the country charts, though it barely made the top fifty in Britain. Unfortunately, Debby was unable to find a follow-up pop hit, but eventually had a number one country hit with Are you on the road to loving me again.

Both those songs are here, along with two Connie Francis covers (My heart has a mind of its own, Everybody's somebody's fool) and a Barbara Lewis cover (Baby I'm yours). There are two songs here by the brilliant but obscure Diane Pfeifer (Free to be lonely again, Perfect fool) who, as far as I know, recorded one album of her own around that time then disappeared back to obscurity. Two excellent movie songs - When you're loved (from Magic of Lassie) and The promise (from The promise) - and another fine song (God knows) complete an excellent set.

This collection contains all the essentials from a great singer who did the family proud.

The best of Debby Boone.......2003-10-24

I was very happy to see this release of Debby Boone's material. It is a great compilation of her songs from the late 70's and early 80's. You Light Up My Life is a beautiful song and no other celebrity can sing it the way Debby does. I enjoyed her country hits as well: "Are You On The Road to Lovin' Me Again" and "Perfect Fool" were at the top of the charts and are fun songs. There is so much more material that could have been placed on this album like "Take It Like A Woman"; "Savin' It Up" and "Meet Me on the Dance Floor". There was a variety of types of music she sang that showed her versatility. Many will enjoy this album, but it is a shame that many other of her songs could not have been included. Curb records has recently released a compilation of her inspirational songs which is done very well too. If you purchased both of these CD's you will be satisfied. I'd love to see some new material from her. She is a great talent and never received the recognition she deserved.
