4 out of 5 stars Yeah.......2006-04-08

The energy and entertainment on this recording, combined with the period sound and ultimate striving make this a vigorously engaging listen.

It's not near perfect and that's just the point. Any mechanism that is aware of how thrown off things are isn't looking for perfection, baby, but is more prone to find themselves pulling and pushing out and here and there, and it's going to take some heart to energize the effort. Here, this band called Petra, mostly hidden from popular music (I think) because they sing about how great Jesus is, cranks out one deeply emotional, heart-wrenching moment in the form of ten songs.

Bob Hartman doesn't look anything close to a rock n' roller but my gosh does he have the heart and fingers for it. Most rock records, and I'm talking throughout the history of music here, settle down at some point and sometimes for far too long. It's rare when you find a cd where the band hits it hard on every song and, to me, that's what Petra almost does here (except for song 8). Throughout the album you get a sense that they are really 'going for it.' And this relentless pursuit of rock n' roll has a lot to do with Hartman (and the singer), a rare rock guitarist who'd just as soon play in his sweatpants and t-shirt as he would in a finely tailored, colorized clothing scheme.

And of all the great, memorable front men in rock n' roll, John Schlitt is one of the more unrecognized. He's a mixture of Rod Stewart, Brian Johnson (AC DC) and Cyndi Lauper, especially on this record, in which he uses his voice to both scream and articulate, sometimes in an up-front manner and other times when he's just another instrument (which I like). But there are countless sweet ways Schlitt rips it up with a vocal that hits notes which veer in different directions. One song after another, his vocal performance is unforgettable.

This does have a slight 'required taste' feel, though, and that's probably due to several subtle variables, such as constant synthesizer usage, background vocals that are just a litle bizarre and Schlitt's vocal being so intense. It just so happens that I like all three of these things but know that some will think differently.

For a medium supposedly as exciting as rock n' roll, it's surprising how much of it is boring (just turn on your local 'classic rock' station); when I meditate upon that fact, it makes This Means War all the more exhilirating and an album totally worth going back to. In other words, it isn't dull and includes elements missing from too much of what is claimed as 'classic' and 'good,' such as playfulness, sincere intensity, spiritual longing, and zealousness.

And when I ponder what they're singing about further, who would have knew, that the Holy spirit likes to rock n' roll too.

3 out of 5 stars GOOD BUT NOT THE BEST PETRA .......2005-12-01

Like the the title says, this is a good album but overrated. It is not the heavy rock album most say it is. What it is however, is a good pop/rock album that is has some good songs on it. I always thought the title track "This Means War" would have sounded better without the High School Band doing the drums but make it more of a rock'n'roll song with the drummer really kicking in hard at the opening. This is obviously the way the producer/band thought was the best was to go for the album and most fans really like it. There are keyboards all over the place on this album and like another reviewer mentioned, they overshadow the guitar.

There are some essential Petra songs on this album. Examples are "He Came,He Saw,He Conquered" "Get On Your Knees And Fight Like A Man" "I Am Available" and the title track of course. Actually my favorite song on here is the last one "All The Kings Horses". It has a great intro and I thought this would make a good opening song for the album or a concert of Petra's.

Overall this is a good collection of Petra songs and I am sure most fans would call this album essential. I wouldn't go that far but some of the songs make it worth buying if you cannot find them on a compilation anywhere else. Don't misunderstand this review. I like the album but felt the band got better on their next release "On Fire". But as you may have already read, "This Means War" does show a much more confident band than "Back To The Street" and the energy level is high throughout the album.

Stand Out songs: "All The King's Horses" "He Came,He Saw,He conquered" "I Am Available" and "You Are My Rock"

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2005-05-04

From the pounding drums that start the title song "This Means War!" to the last song "All The King's Horses", this album rocks and is still my favorite Petra album. "He Came, He Saw, He Conquered" is an awesome song talking about Jesus dying and rising from the dead, plus the song absolutely rocks. "Kenaniah" is awesome song about a story from the old testament and rocks out. "You Are My Rock" is perhaps my favorite song on this album and I think is very underrated. John Schlitt does a great job with the vocals, the music is great and the message is very powerful about Jesus being our rock during all of the ups and downs of life. "The Water Is Alive" is a fun song to listen to and I like the message of this song as well about Christ quenching our thirsty hearts. To me "This Means War!" ranks just above "Beyond Belief" and rocks second only to "Jekyll and Hyde."
Sure it had that 1987 sound but I still love it as much today as I did when I first heard it back then.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome album contrary to popular opinion!.......2004-10-12

The lyrics are excellent in this album. Petra does not sway from its mission to openly proclaim the gospel. Unfortunately many bands of today have the label christian, yet their lyrics are anything but christian.

For a presentation in Spring 2004 featuring contemporary and old style christian music I used this album to demonstrate what Christian music sounded like back in the day, and the entire class laughed at me! But its odd that in 1987 few if any college and high school christians would have laughed at me if I had done a similiar thing back then.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2004-06-24

Great rockin' Christian cd. Every song is awesome! Buy this one. You will not regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation For Folks Like Myself.......2006-07-14

I already own three Petra albums, those being the "No Doubt" album and two compilation titles ("Radiophonics" and "Petra Means Rock") other than this one. I really enjoy most of what Petra has put out over the years, but I prefer buying compilations of this group since they never got much airplay (especially their harder rock songs) in my area and I hate to plunk down my cash on something that I may not like. I'd much rather get a sampling of a few albums all at once instead of purchasing three or four albums and only enjoying a few songs on each.

This particular album has a number of solid rock tracks on it, including my personal favorites, "Sleeping Giant" and "This Means War." It also includes a couple of songs from the "No Doubt" album that I already own.

If you're like me and don't get to hear many Christian rock bands on your local radio, pick up compilations like this one to give you an idea of what you're listening too. Petra's sound has changed quite a bit over the years. I personally enjoy the band fronted by John Schlitt, but the Greg Volz fronted "The Coloring Song" is my all-time favorite Petra tune.

4 out of 5 stars A lot of Petra compiliations.......2005-08-21

I grew up listening to Petra tunes back in the early 80's. The compiliations are excellent also.

2 out of 5 stars A compilation that misses the good songs...?.......2004-07-23

I read one of the reviews already posted suggesting that if you're looking at this album you would be better served to buy the originals. That reviewer is 100% correct. Beyond Belief, Unseen Power, and Wake-Up Call are my three favorite Petra albums and this CD looks to be poorly cobbled together from them. Don't get me wrong, there are still some great songs on here, but if you buy this CD you'll be missing out on the truly great songs those albums had. Don't settle for left-overs. Get the original albums.

2 out of 5 stars BUY THE ORIGINALS!!!.......2004-03-28

This low score is NOT for the music itself. Petra's songs have been put into several compilations in order to make profits for whatever company had the rights to their albums.

It's a big mistake to just get one of their compilations if you don't own their original CD's. You are missing out on LOTS of awesome music if that's the case. If the little music clips on this sound good to you, get the albums: "Wake-Up Call", "Beyond Belief", "Unseen Power" and/or ANY of the others represented on this collection. There's so much more to hear from these guys.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Petra.......2003-01-20

This is a blast from the past. It was nice to hear a rockin' collection of Petra hits once again.

5 out of 5 stars Sedimentary Rock!.......2006-04-02

I like several of Petra's compiliations! Especially "Petraphonics" and that's not dinosaurs either. Layer upon layer of guitar chords and pounding drums! The album arts on these albums are really cool.

5 out of 5 stars "Upon This Rock.....".......2005-12-20

Petra is a ROCK band. They've cranked out hits for over three decades now. Secular arena rock fans should have no problem listening to these guys. They fit perfectly into anyone's rock catalogue and sound right comfortable there. They are perhaps the most influential Christian band in any genre. You could make an argument for Amy Grant in the pop genre, but she sang secular tunes to reach the masses whereas Petra has always been about the Gospel.

Though I enjoy many of the songs with Greg X. Volz on this particular album (some of the best ones on hear are fronted by him), I'm one of those latter-day Petra fans who started listening to the band after John Schlitt took over. Don't forget that Bob Hartman is the true driving force behind this band. Responsible for almost all of this band's tunes and usually contributing something to the ones he didn't write, Hartman deserves a special place in the halls of Christian rock history.

Favorites of mine include "Judas' Kiss," "All Fired Up," "Stand Up" and "He Came, He Saw, He Conquered." Other big hits include "Counsel of the Holy" and "Shakin' The House."

If you enjoy arena rock in the vein of Kansas, you're sure to enjoy Petra. They are one of the best things to come out of Christian music and they will keep influencing bands for many decades to come.

4 out of 5 stars THE ONLY PETRA GREATEST HITS YOU NEED.......2005-12-01

First off, there are way to many Petra 'best of' cds out there. I am sure it's the record companies decision and Petra had little to say on the subject. With so many out there you might have a little trouble deciding which to go with. I would highly recommend going with this one as it is more complete than the other ones. You get all the essentials of Petra like "Shakin' The House" "Hit You Where You Live" "Judas Kiss" and "Angel Of Light". This best of cd features both singers and gives equal time to each one.

This is a good one to get for those wanting a good compilation that has songs from the pre Beyond Belief Petra. Actally you could buy this, "Beyond Belief" "Unseen Power" "Wake-Up Call" "No Doubt" "God Fixation" "Jekyl And Hyde" and you would have all the Petra you need. Maybe "Captured In Time And Space" to get live Petra songs like "Grave Robber" and "Speak To The Sky" would make this complete. That's my opinion and die hard fans would probably say "This Means War" is an essential album to buy also.

Stand out songs: "Hit You Where You Live" "Shakin'The House" and "Angel Of Light"

And yes, I know even this compilation is not perfect(It needs "This Means War" and a few more from "On Fire" in my opinion) but it is the best out there so far. If you can find the long out of print box set "War And Rememberance" then great, because that is another one worth including in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Totally awesome.......2005-09-24

I have been a big fan of Petra for a long time and really enjoy their music. All the songs on here are excellent. Now with the band breaking up after a 33 year career, I started to play all my Petra albums. This one is one of my favorites because it has a great rock beat and the pace is consistent. There were only a few songs I didn't like. If you want to hear one of Petra's best albums, I highly recommend you buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars best petra comp so far except war and rememberance.......2003-01-22

Right, firstly the songs on this album are all rocky so get used to it. Ballad likers wont bat an eye over this album! Althought they should because these are some of the biggest songs ever penned by petra during the eighties! I was well glad to see they had "Killing My Old Man" and "Angel Of Light" on this one, two of my fav sopngs when Greg was lead singer. But why is This Means War not on here for? That is another very heavy rocker?!! Dont ask me. But still this album boasts memorable tracks like "Judas Kiss" and "Shakin The House" which should nto be missed. Please people out there get this album now. Get away fromt he world and rock and get on your knees and fight like a man!!
