A Masterful Music Minister.......2006-07-23
Danniebelle Hall. All who remember her and her great ministry in song can attest to her talent and anointing. I was a student at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in the 1970's when I first heard her music. Life Begins With Jesus was the first song to capture my attention. I became an instant Danniebelle fan. I bought her second project This Moment without hearing it first. I believed that because it was Danniebelle's it would be wonderful. It was! What Kind Of Love Is This, Perfect Submission, and the title cut This Moment mesmerized me. I tried to buy every thing with her name on it after that. I still perform some of those songs in concerts.
When Danniebelle walked on stage and took her seat at the piano, you were in for a treat. She could take the simplest concept and create a masterful selection. Turn It Over To Jesus, Because I'm Me, and Ordinary People are such examples along with my personal favorite on this project I'll Be Right There. Another gem not found on this CD that she gave me permission to record is Mary Had A Little Lamb
As a young music student, I was amazed by her voice, lyrics, and sincerity. Over the years, I was blessed to be in her presence many times. We talked about our faith and music and shared our songs. She told me that she wanted to work with me on lead vocals. I wish she had had more time...
Treat yourself to this Danniebelle CD. You will not regret it. If you are looking for songs that speak from the heart of the composer to the Lord, capturing the listener along the way, then this is the music for you.
The Definitive Contemporary Gospel Music Communicator.......2005-10-21
Danniebelle Hall is the most underrated and underappreciated female gospel vocalist to emerge from the Jesus People era of the 70's. With contemporaies like Honeytree, Evie, and Cynthia Clawson she made a mark for herself as a traveling troubador for Christ in and out of America. If there is a comparison in secular music I would liken her to Roberta Flack; another piano playing singer-songwriter with a vast musical appreciation and versatility. Danniebelle's voice was more powerful and emotive than Flack's own but the comparison is fair.
Danniebelle acheived moderate fame and popularity as a member of Andre Crouch and The Disciples where she lent her expressive multi-octave range to several Christian music classics. "Tell Them" is probably one of the most impassioned musical pleas you will ever hear for spreading the gospel message. The crisp and pliable alto /soprano voice you hear sprinkled throughout the Disciples' music throughout the mid to late seventies was none other than Miss Danniebelle Hall.
After leaving the Disciples, Danniebelle recorded her first album Introducing Danniebelle on Light Records. "Starting a New Day", "Life Really Begins With Jesus", "In Remembrance" and others Including "Great is Thy Faithfulness" etched her strong songwriting and interpretive skills in the hearts and minds of contemporary gospel music lovers all over the world. She single- handedly changed the way that a generation of gospel soloists sang "Great is thy Faithfulness". Every time you hear someone ad lib the line "every time I wake up in the morning' on Great Is Thy Faithfulness be sure they "stole" that from Danniebelle.
"Ordinary People is the height of Danniebelle's success as a popular songwriter. It's a beautiful ballad of God's desire to use the underestimated; just the ordinary.
"Remembering the Times" contains many examples of Danniebelle's virtuosity as a soloist and arranger. The Live in Sweden reproduction reveals a music minister who can float in and out of musical genres as well as cultures with ease. She rocks Dottie Rambo's "I Go To The Rock" like a revival meeting and then serves up the Hymn classic "Day by Day" with a clear sensitivity to the essence of the lyric and a demonstrable understanding of the need for different moods and shades in a concert presentation. The only thing that is missing in this reproduction is much of Danniebelle's verbal interaction with her Swedish audience which enhanced the original release.
"Let Me Have A Dream" (The first Danniebelle album I ever purchased) was an ecclectic and imaginative collection of songs.
My personal favorite on this set is "We All Need Each Other". It is clear, vintage Danniebelle. Her ability to take a complicated lyric and make it fit in time and mood is simply remarkable. Another standout on this set is "You're The Only One" which features gospel legend Jessy Dixson in the background. "Freedom" is also another variation from the norm at that time.
I saw Danniebelle once in concert in Boston near the end of her concert and touring experience. She was genuine, sensitive and accessible to those who loved and admired her. I was definately in that category. I still am. Sadly, Danniebelle's beautiful life and voice have been stilled in death from complications from diabetes.
I think one of the greatest tragedies and travesties of present day gospel fans is that most of them have never even heard of this great and humble woman. Her music is extremely hard to find. So if you're even remotely interested in hearing her you'd better snatch this up with a quickness. It's a rare and beautiful find; like a ruby. I hope you enjoy. Let Danniebelle's music and the LORD's presence transform your life. You won't regret it.
Beautiful, In Spirit and in Song.......2001-12-15
Danniebelle is my all time favorite singer!!
I remember seeing her in my early teens while she toured with Andrae Crouch and the Disciples, she performed "Oh Savior" (later to be recorded on the phenominal TAKE ME BACK album) she blew me away and continues to do so!
What joy it was to hear her on her solo projects, where she took every opportunity to express her love the the Lord, as well as with Andrae Crouch. I could not get enough of her! I remember visiting the record store at least monthly to see if she put out anything new. I would by any album she was on!
Live in Sweden still has the same effect on me as it did when I first listened to it, wish I was there!
Whenever I hear Let me have a Dream, I close my eyes and just feel it go through me.
She has done much more than these two and my all time favorite Danniebelle album has to be This Moment.
This set, however, is a must buy!
Also pick up Andrae' Crouch "Take Me Back", you'll see what I'm talking about.
Inspired and Inspiring.......2001-08-18
I bought "Live in Sweden" in the 70's on cassette and have treasured it. Now on CD, her piano, personality, and voice communicates an intensity and commitment that gives the impression that you are present for a live performance. My all-time-favorite is Day by Day, sung alternately in Swedish and English with a special encore. There is no doubt that this extremely talented performer has an intimate gift of music communication. Two CD's at the price of less than one is a unbelievable!

Customer Reviews:
Exceptional Weill.......2005-05-14
I second the comments of the previous review--Weba Garretson's "Youkeli Tango" is remarkably beautiful. The whole cd is terrific, with the orchestrations contributing what amounts to half of a spectacular duet.
not amused.......2005-03-09
i feel that brechts style of lyrical flow could not have been more distantly branded as ok
Eisler and Weill with an edge.......2004-02-23
The Eastside Sinfonietta's "Don't Be Afraid," featuring the nuanced, cutting vocals of Weba Garretson, adds a (West Coast) American voice to the current of Weill and Eisler songs sung in English (and sung as they should be sung. ) In recent decades the Australian Robyn Archer and the German Dagmar Krause have released wonderful CDs in English, to add to Gisela May's benchmark German language recordings. This recording belongs in that exalted league, recreating these songs, forcing them to full and bitter flowering once again for this century and this generation of listeners. The musical interpretations here grow out of an avant garde/club scene sensibility. There are other ways to do this music, but this approach tends to strip off the cloying nostagia which sometimes comes with Weimar era music, nostalgia which is in truth completely opposed to the spirit of Brecht's words, and Eisler's and Weill's music. One has to hope that Ms. Garretson and the Eastside Sinfonietta of Los Angeles will attempt an album devoted exclusively to Hanns Eisler's powerful songs -- so little known by American singers and audiences.
Absolutely Nothing to Fear !.......2004-02-06
One has reason to fear the too well traveled Weil/Brecht musical terrain. It' s been trampled to death with second rate homages. So it was with a jolt of excitement and welcome surprise that I experienced the Don't' Be Afraid album. The Eastside Sinfonietta, and the remarkable Weba Garretson, have infused the repertoire (plus the happy inclusion of Hanss Eisler pieces) with a fresh and inspired take on the songs. The extremely gifted ensemble performs the difficult trick of channeling the Weimar standards so that they are born again with a rare clarity and contemporary impact. Weba Garretson dazzles with her version of Youkali Tango and personalizes all the favorites that had lost their impact until she came along. This CD is a fearsome experience. Don't hesitate for a minute. Enjoy!
