A Young Tenor's Tribute to his Homeland.......2002-10-22

Northern Period Counterpoint to "Sacred Harp".......2006-10-05

A beautiful collection of "low-church" hymns in a folk style, but from the North. Some similarities to Sacred Harp-style shape-note singing, mostly found in the South, but from New England and largely taken from mid-19th Century period sources. Extremely well-performed and haunting, these songs will be running through your head for weeks after your mega-church's latest electric guitar extravaganza fades away.

Nearly Lost Heritage.......2000-08-09

I am appreciative of any CD, such as this one, that brings the sounds of traditional hymns to modern ears. This CD includes familiar gospel with not so familiar hymns that whisper of a rich heritage nearly lost in the maze o modern choruses. Many of these modern songs lack the genuine passion found in the traditional songs found on this CD. I recommend this CD to those who are interested in cultural history as well as in beautiful hymn texts.

For Crumb enthusiasts.......2006-11-19

The three works on this disc are somewhat "typical" Crumb. "Songs, Drones, and Refrains of Death" is not Crumb's greatest work, even if it has his signature gestures -- a combination of speaking and singing during songs, shouting from the percussion players, among other techniques. It's a little contrived and more than a little dated (it's unmistakably 1960s avant-garde), but it's not a bad work. The recording's vocal performance by both the ensemble and the soloist sounds very muddled, which is unfortunate.

The Suite for Christmas has never been my favorite work. Crumb's other works for piano, such as the Makrokosmos books, are so much better it makes this work really look kind of anomalously amateur, even though I'm sure it's extremely hard to play. Orkis makes the most of this work, it's as good as I've ever heard it.

Apparition is by far the best work on this disc. It focuses on death just like the Songs and Drones, but Apparition also has some of the most delicate music found in any of Crumb's works. And the singing is sharp and clear, even with the transparent textures of the music. It uses Walt Whitman's Death Carol as its text and really captures the mysticism, light, and darkness that surrounds death that Whitman conveys in his poem.

Overall, it's a good disc. It's definitely a great disc for people who like Crumb, but I know I wouldn't have explored much more of his music if this were my introduction.

Not a Lullaby at All!.......2003-09-10

I can't give this CD anything but a 2. It was certainly NOT the Ultimate Lullaby. And although the music is beautiful I would not put my baby to sleep with this. I'm not a fan of opera and perhaps if I listen a bit more that may change. Our daughter listens to music every night. It is so hard to buy music sometimes and I went out on a limb with this one. I really wish it had stated that there were vocals - I much prefer the music without.

I bought this cd on a whim, and I got way more than I bargained for! I'm an opera singer and I absolutely love the assortment of gorgeous ballads - lots of classics and old favorites. I agree this might not be the best music to lull and infant to sleep, but it's a great way to build your child's appreciation for operatic vocals. I highly recommend this cd singers - specifically sopranos. It's a diamond in the rough.

Caveat emptor.......2002-10-21

I'm in violent agreement with the other reviewers who remarked that this CD is not for the purpose of lulling baby to sleep, in spite of its misleading title. A1-opera-grade sopranos and mezzos sing most of the selections and their vocal dynamics range from pianissimo to a house-shaking fortissimo. The only track where baby might catch a bit of shut-eye is Puccini's "Humming Chorus" from "Madama Butterfly."

Try "Celtic Lullaby" if you're looking for a truly sleep-inducing CD.

"The Ultimate Lullaby Album" contains a wonderful assortment of Marilyn Horne and Leontyne Price solos, which is all to the good if you're not trying to snooze. My two favorites are the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria" sung by Price (I don't think there is a more perfect rendition), and Bach's "Bist Du bei Mir" sung by Horne in her rich, smooth, chocolate-y prime.

Unfortunately another grand voice is not at its prime in "When You Wish upon a Star." I'd guess Dame Joan was near the end of her stellar (sorry) career when she recorded this Disney song. Her vibrato stretches as wide as Dumbo's behind.

Another rather odd selection is the only instrumental arrangement on this CD: "O Danny Boy" as rendered by the English Chamber Orchestra, with a trombone as the lugubrious solo instrument. It's long enough and trite enough to be used as the soundtrack for that tacky sequel to "Gone with the Wind."

"The Ultimate Lullaby Album" is definitely not for baby's room. If you want your kid to grow up listening to "Londonderry Air," get Kiri Te Kawana's version. It'll prickle up the hair on the back of your neck if you can find it. I can't. I wore out my original tape and have fruitlessly searched the Internet for a new copy. If anyone out there in Amazon land has a recording of Dame Kiri singing folksongs of the British Isles, please consider selling it to me.

Ultimate Lullaby Album.......2002-06-01

The music is superb. Although it would not be used to put the baby to sleep, it is a wonderful choice for one-to-one relaxing time with baby.
An excellent addition to the new baby's music collection. I listened to it with my class in school before giving it to my brand new grandson. I now give it as a gift to all newborns.

Is there a dispute?.......2002-01-12

3 music fans gave different ratings. 2 said it's diappointing, the other said they were ridiculous. I bought and listened to this CD. I feel great about my purchase. These are good music, and there should not be a dispute. If one is disappointed because of the opera voice, blame it on Decca's label "Ultimate Lullaby". The music deserves my 5-satr rating.

Resonant, artful arrangements of seldom-heard Christmas carols.......2006-10-01

A lovely collection of traditional carols and dances from Western Europe--some haunting, some jaunty, and all richly orchestrated for voice, keyboard, dulcimer, viola, recorder, guitar, mandolin, double bass and world percussion. This album has the same depth, quality and wholesome honesty of McCauley's other work, and while it starts off on the gentle side, it picks up in intensity as it goes along. Although all the tracks are great, my favorites are towards the end, including the rowdy "Bring Us In Good Ale," the inventive, Mid-East-tinged "Star of the East," and Frank Jackson's folksy arrangement of the 14th century Italian dance "Trotto," which is full of fiery fiddle, thrumming guitar and hints of progressive folk. Throughout their recording career, McCauley and husband/co-producer Kurt Scherer have maintained a core group of truly talented musicians, whose camaraderie and sensitivity to each other's improvisations continues to shine through in each new endeavor. Phil Heaven (bowed strings) and Frank Jackson (recorders and whistles) have been with them since their 1998 debut album, "Sabbath Day's Journey," while guitarist Brian Cunningham and percussionist Jason Darling have been around for at least the past one or two. Joining the team on this album is Lynne Givler on double bass, adding a nice depth and grounding to the sound. Everybody seems to have a Christmas album these days, and "The Moon of Wintertime" is a great one, with a distinctive mood and flavor all it's own. Compare and contrast it with some other stylish favorites of mine, also highly recommended: "A Winter Garden" and "To Drive the Cold Winter Away" by Loreena McKennitt, "Celtic Christmas I & II" and "Joy! Joy! My Favorite Christmas CD.......2005-12-01

This is without a doubt my favorite Christmas CD. Unlike traditional Christmas songs sung by "celebrities" - these renditions are timeless and classic.

The transitions from beautiful orchestral arrangements to the pure nakedness of a single voice is the perfect platform for quiet, reflective meditation.

Superb, classical Christmas arrangements.......2001-12-29

This two volume set is incredibly good. I came upon it in Target of all places. It looked like it might be good so I bought it and took it home. I was thrilled! The arrangements are terrific, the performers are top-notch, and what a variety! Everything from brass to voices to strings. One of my volumes mysteriously disappeard (I think my older son had something to do with it!) so I'm having to reorder it. I'm also going to get several as gifts.

I've bought a lot of christmas CD's and these are some that I am most pleased to listen to, any time of the year. The songs are not the same old familiar Christmas songs rearranged, but nice arrangements of a variety of songs done so anyone can appreciate them, especially the classical listener.
