Prime Cuts: Over and Over, Joshua's Song, Dance

The album title--"Life is Great and Getting Better"--says it all. Surmounted by the celebatory themes of life, God and love informed by the promises of Scripture, there's not the slightest penetration of despair. In fact, these 12 tracks' effervescent gambol has such a boomerang effect that it can lift any spirit of melancholy. Musically, this award-wining couple has kept in balanced tandem the slickness of modern country and the rustic edges of Southern Gospel. Not unlike their previous efforts, this is a mostly in-house affair with the Easters taking the lead in songwriting department with their pal Woody Wright. However, in terms of outside material, the Easters have cast their nets venturesomely into portfolio of Americana artist Billy Joe Saver's "Old Chunk of Coal." Though it does not have the grit and weathered-worn feel of the original, this paean of humanity's latent potential fits into the overall theme of the album like hand to a glove.

In terms of songs with a striking melodic immediacy, lead single "Over and Over" is an infectious uptempo that grooves with praises about the Lord's continual faithfulness over life's disappointments. Packing a wallop of inspirational boost is the similarly-themed "Livin' in the Rain" which also features some dexterous sounding fiddles to boot. And the sing-a-long hook of the title track is enough to etch its way into the memory bank in no time. However, such sanguinity does not mean that the complexities of life's toils are swept underneath the carpet. Rather, they are brought unto the feet of Jesus in complete trust as evidenced by "All the Days that End with Why," which calls to mind somehow Clay Walker's similarly titled "All the Days that End with Y."

However, the apogee of the album is in the ballads. "Joshua's Song," a slow pensive ballad featuring Sheri Easter on lead, functions on two levels. On the surface it's a devotional mediation of the Biblical story of Joshua on the other hand it's the Easter's gift to their son Joshua. "Daddy Hung the Moon," a tribute to paternal love, finds Jeff Easter in Paul-Overstreet territory. In fact, vocally Jeff's lightweighted tenor does not sound too distant from the ace-songwriter. Though listening to "Dance" may conjure up echoes of Lee Ann Womack's career smash "I Hope You Dance," the slow built-up of the song that blossoms into a full-blown Gospel convocation is delightful.

Though this record's sunny disposition has a way of re-assure us in our journey of faith to trust God deeper, the major flaw lies in the lack of originality of some of tracks. As aforementioned, many of them mined the same territory others have labored without more penetrating insights. Nevertheless, with the montage of happy smiling family photos displayed throughout the CD sleeve, this couple seems to be living out what they are singing. More importantly, the Easters'overarching message that in Jesus life is great and getting better deserves repeated heeding!

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary!.......2000-09-03

Jeff and Sheri have done it again! This favorite husband and wife duo have put out yet another album that's sure to please their fans. The first song "We're Not Gonna Bow" opens with a more progressive sound than that of former projects, yet with a country flair that has defined their ministry. The title track is the only song that shows any evidence of their former bluegrass roots, and also showcases Sheri's own songwriting ability. In fact, half the songs on this project were written by her, including the very country sound of "One Way" with Russ Taft and the touching "Remembering Angels", a tribute to the influential people in her life. Absent from this effort is the standard love song one has come to expect from Jeff and Sheri. Instead, there are ten powerful songs that point to the relationship between family and God, including the beautiful rendition of "The Moon and I", a very introspective and poetic song. Most notably on this album are two songs by Bruce Haynes (writer of "Praise His Name") that demonstrate Jeff's talent as a major male vocalsit and are sure to give him recognition as such. "Goin' Away Party" is a celebration of the fulfillment of the Christian life, and "Finally Free" is a hypnotic emotionally charged ballad that expresses and glorifies the magnitude of God, and is guaranteed to leave you breathless. One thing is for sure, "Ordinary Day" is no ordinary project and certainly not by an ordinary group. You don't want to miss this one!

5 out of 5 stars Ordinary Day makes up for a Bad Day!.......2000-08-02

I am an avid Gospel music listener. I have all of Jeff and Sherri Easters previous cds and they just keep getting better and better! Sherri's song writting ability really shines on this cd! Sherri has a very unique voice and with Jeff they blend so perfectly together.

When I recieved this cd I was having a really rotten day and by the time I finished listening to the cd, my BAD DAY became just what this CD is called. Ordinary Day. God can take anything and make it one step better!

If you like Southern Gospel music with a flair, Ordinary Day by Jeff and Sherri Easter is the CD you need in your collection!

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Very Good To Memorable Recordings of Bernstein's American Composer Recordings.......2007-07-01

This is yet another superb box set of Bernstein's Deutsche Grammophon recordings, emphasizing his strong affinity and interest in the work of such great American composers like Charles Ives, Aaron Copland and William Schuman. The best recordings are those with The New York Philharmonic of Charles Ives's orchestral works and Aaron Copland's Third Symphony, "Quiet City" suite for horn and strings, and the El Salon de Mexico ballet suite. But I also admire Bernstein's recordings with the Los Angeles Philharmonic of Gershwin's great classical/jazz orchestral works like "Rhapsody in Blue" and "An American in Paris", and the recordings of several other Copland scores, most notably, "Appalachian Spring". Like virtually all of the other recordings in Deutsche Grammophon's "Collector's Edition" series of Leonard Bernstein, these were recorded by Deutsche Grammophon in the 1980s, often during live concert performances held in Los Angeles, Tel Aviv, and New York City (Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall). While some may prefer Bernstein's classic recordings of Copland and Ives for CBS Masterworks (now Sony) in the late 1950s and 1960s, these have the benefit of being digital recordings made by Deutsche Grammophon's then state-0f-the-art recording processes. Without question, anyone who is a fan of Copland's, Gershwin's or Ives' scores and of Leonard Bernstein will surely cherish this fine 6 CD box set.

This CD has meant so much to me and my family. We especially like "Roses Will Bloom Again". It has really gotten us through a rough time with my grandma who is battling with cancer. "I Wonder if He Ever Cries" has been my favorite for a long time and "I've Been Touched" just gives me chills. This CD is awesome and I know God was in its making!n

5 out of 5 stars The sound that got them started!.......2000-09-02

For those of you who like the ministry of Jeff and Sheri Easter, this CD is a must-have. It goes all the way back to the very roots of what Jeff and Sheri are all about: great music, love of family, and relationship with God. Since most of their early music is now out-of-print this CD is heaven-sent for the true Jeff and Sheri fan. Great songs like "There's A Higher Power", "You'll Reap What You Sow" and the classic Easter Brother's favorite, "A Heart That Will Never Break Again" are done in a style many people are reminiscent for in gospel music. And no project would be complete without those famous power ballads of Sheri Easter, " I Wonder if He Ever Cries" and "I've Been Touched" (just to name a couple). Also included on this project is one of this group's trademark songs which was voted one of southern gospel music's favorite songs of the 1990's, "Roses Will Bloom Again". This project is a taste of where Jeff and Sheri started; it's a standard in the industry, and it's a commitment to a ministry of reaching, helping, and healing a hurting world.

Thomas Pasatieri is a highly respected composer, having provided many of the orchestrations for the major movie soundtrack scores by famous composers, as well as writing several fine operas to the American Composer repertory. His sense of compositional line is superb and he has the ability to marry musical line and text as well as any composer writing today.

This tremendously enjoyable disc features three of his works in a spectrum most of us are not used to hearing. His penchant for comedy and 'high drama' is fun and successful. 'Divas of a Certain Age' is a biting satire here sung by two fine singing actresses - Sheri Greenawald and Ashley Putnam - accompanied by Pasatieri on the piano. It is funny, sarcastic, witty, and thoroughly entertaining despite the brevity of the piece.

The major work on this recording is 'La Divina', a piece that is not only well composed and performed (Sheri Greenawald has the lead as the acerbic diva who practically destroys everyone in her path). The orchestral writing is echt Pasatieri with clever instrumentation and ornamentation, a solid composition on every level.

The final work is Pasatieri's 'Signor Deluso', a light opera buffo that gives a fresh group of singers form the Opera Company of Brooklyn a chance to display talent that is very promising indeed. This is a tasty little tidbit of type most associated with Donizetti and it comes off very well in comparison. This is a strong recording that deserves attention. Grady Harp, October 06
