Customer Reviews:
A bluesy classic from 1979.......2004-02-18
Hank's music has three main roots - country, blues and rock'n'roll. The blues influence is less evident than the other two on some of his other albums but it is strong on this one. The majority of the album (the first four and the last three tracks) is quite mellow, though three consecutive tracks in the middle (I fought the law, Family tradition, Only Daddy that'll walk the line) pick up the tempo.
Family tradition is one of several great songs that Hank has written about himself and his father. I guess it was written in response to people who said that he wasn't like his father, especially his musical style. In the song, Hank lists all the ways in which he is like his father - drinking, smoking, singing and living out his songs.
Old flame new fire, Always loving you, We can work it all out, I've got rights and I just ain't been able are all great original songs. Paying on time sounds like an old Crystal Gayle song (Dreaming my dreams with you) with new lyrics. There are several excellent covers including To love somebody (Bee Gees), I fought the law (an American hit for Bobby Fuller but revived in the late seventies by British punk rockers The Clash) and Only Daddy that'll walk the line (Waylon Jennings).
This is not the most instantly appealing of Hank's albums but there is a lot of great music here, which grows on you with repeat plays. If you like your country music served with a strong blues flavor, this is for you.
Family Tradition.......1999-05-05
I have listened to this CD over and over and every time I hear it again it keeps getting better! All of Hank Jr's records are like this.

A country-blues mix with a few hymns thrown in for good measure, this album from North Carolina fiddler Joe Thompson conjures up notions like summertime... outdoors... parties. Thompson did the arranging, but most of the tunes are traditional, providing a snapshot of a regional music that has gone pretty much unchanged for years--Thompson himself has been playing since the 1920s. It's not as daring or genre-bending as, say, Gatemouth Brown, but it is a lot of fun. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
Really good music, a joy to hear.......2003-04-25
When I bought this CD I expected it would just be interesting culturally to hear an old fiddler, probably past his prime, preserving the dying culture of Black fiddling. Boy was I wrong. This record is a joy to hear, nice to listen to, a real highpoint to learn from as I aspire to be a fiddler. His playing is crisp, blusy and rhythmic. The singing is very good and the accompaniment is very rhythmic, but understated to let us hear who the real star is. The rhytmn is very nice and novel. This is fun to listen to. Real folk music.
PRE-BLUES AFRICAN-AMERICAN OLD-TIME FIDDLE MUSIC.......2000-08-29
This is a very important album. It documents Joe Thompson (born in 1918) of Alamance County, North Carolina, one of the last African-American fiddlers who still plays in the pre-blues old-time style. Joe was born into a North Carolina Piedmont farming family that produced many fine fiddlers and banjo players, including his father, John Arch (1879-1968), and his paternal uncles, Jacob A. (1876-?) and Walter E. (1882-?). Joe's father and uncles were much sought-after musicians for square dances in both the white and black communities of Orange County.
"Frolics" -- dance parties featuring "eight-hand sets" square dancing to the music of the fiddle and 5-string banjo (you were invited to a frolic with the phrase, "Hands-up eight and don't be late!") -- were the main form of social recreation in the rural black communities of North Carolina's Piedmont back in Joe's youth. As children, Joe and his older brother Nate (1916-1997) began playing for local frolics and house parties, often with their uncle Walter's son, Odell (1911-1994). By the 1930s, guitar-based blues began making inroads into their community, so Nate and Odell also doubled on the guitar to accompany the latest popular couple dances that were interspersed between the eight-hand sets. Joe, however, preferred to "hang to" the fiddle and the old-time music of his father and uncles.
After his military tour of duty in Europe, Joe returned to North Carolina to settle down and raise a family. He continued to play on occasion with his cousin Odell, who would back him up on the banjo, but the old-time frolics of their youth had all but disappeared from their community-- R&B and Rock & Roll were all the rage. The 1960s Folk Revival sparked renewed interset in old-time music and Joe and Odell were "discovered" by folklorist Christopher "Kip" Lornell in the early 1970s. It wasn't long before they began a new career performing on the folk circuit. Today, a youthful 80 years old, Joe is still a favorite at old-time music and folk festivals throughout the country and the world over. His only regret is that the young people of his own community have no interest in this music and after he's gone there'll be no one left to carry on the family tradition.
FAMILY TRADITION is the first album devoted to Joe Thompson and his music (Joe and Odell, as a fiddle and banjo duo, appear on several compilations of field-recordings-- including Smithsonian-Folkways' BLACK BANJO SONGSTERS and Rounder's THE NORTH CAROLINA BANJO COLLECTION-- as well as their own cassette on the Global Village label, OLD-TIME MUSIC FROM THE NORTH CAROLINA PIEDMONT). The majority of tunes here feature Joe's fiddle backed by banjo, guitar and bass, which makes for some great rollicking, top-tapping music. One of my favorite cuts is Joe singing an old sacred song, OIL IN MY VESSEL, which he learned from his mother, to the accompaniment of Bob Carlin (the album's producer who usually backs him on banjo) on guitar and master multi-instrumentalist Scott Ainslie on slide guitar.
All in all, this is a superb album and production. Grab it!

Album Description
Jean Ritchie is a national treasure, one of America's finest and best known traditional singers. She grew up in Viper, Kentucky, and is part of a large family, the famous "Singing Ritchies of Kentucky." The ballads on this recording are outstanding Appalachian versions of the "Child ballads," English and Scottish narrative songs collected and published by scholar Francis James Child in the late 19th century. The songs tell of true and lost love, jealousy, treachery, grief, death, and the supernatural. This reissue of her landmark Folkways recordings of British traditional ballads in Appalachia brings her clear, pure voice and timeless songs to new generations of listeners.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Music!.......2007-05-22
This is beautiful music. Jean Ritchie has such a pretty voice and these Appalachian songs are such a treasure.
Pure Mountain Music.......2004-06-28
I first heard of Jean Ritchie through a video on old time music and this is the first cd i've been able to find of her recordings, the other ones are already out of print. If you love old time mountain music or traditional bluegrass, you will want this cd in your collection. Jean has one of the purest voices that i've ever heard in mountain style music. The only other Person that comes to mind is Anita Carter. There both Appalachian Angels in my opinion.

For the last thirty years, the Taylor family has woven their unique blend of pop, folk, and American roots music into the fabric of our collective musical consciousness. Kate Taylor continues that tradition with the release of her highly anticipated album, Beautiful Road. Combining influences from R&B, Appalachia and soul, Kate's album is a truly unique and accomplished collection.
Customer Reviews:
Great cd from out of nowhere .......2005-02-01
Thank you Rolling Stone for your review of "Beautiful Road". I wouldn't have come across this gem if I hadn't read the review buried in the back of the magazine. (3 stars is too low, though).
"I Will Fly" and "Beautiful Road" are 2 of the most beautiful folk-rock songs I have ever heard. In between, there are traces of Creedence, a little of Emmy Lou, with a great ecletic mix of folk, rock-abilly, and country. It's always a pleasure to hear brother James harmonize on any album, and the harmonizing is especially poignant on this one. If you're a fan of acoustic music with thoughtful lyrics and a nice blending of folk, country, rock, and rock-abilly you will enjoy this cd. This cd is an unexpected pleasure that seem to come from nowhere.(the cd came out in 2002 so why is Rolling Stone reviewing it just now ?).
Rolling Stone review.......2005-01-17
THIS REVIEW APPEARS IN THE JANUARY 27th ISSUE OF
ON NEWSSTANDS THIS FRIDAY JANUARY 14th
BEAUTIFUL ROAD *** 3 STARS
Lost and found: A heartfelt folk-rock gem from James Taylor's sister
An overlooked gem that was originally released in 2002, Kate Taylor's
first full-length since 1979 has a handcrafted aura and a bittersweet
back story. Beautiful Road was co-produced and largely written by
Taylor's husband, Charlie Witham, who took ill during its making and
died shortly after. Yet
Taylor projects spiritual resilience on ultimately uplifting songs such
as the chiming, heavily allusive title track: the folk-gospel lament, "I
Will Fly" (on which she's joined by her famous brother, James); and
Randall Bramblett's redemptive anthem "Flying in the Face of Mr. Blue."
She's aided throughout by a talented cast, including bassist and
co-producer Tony Garnier (from Bob Dylan's band), Levon Helm, Chuck
Leavell and Mavis Staples, whose participation tacitly attests to the
healing power of community.
Key Track "I Will Fly"
its great to have Rolling Stone acknowledge this GREAT CD two years after its release--it IS that good!
Kate's BEST!.....so far!.......2003-12-14
I have loved Kate's music since the LP (and I'm lucky to own it on CD!) 'SISTER KATE'.
Her voice has always communicated a soulful, wise 'git down' passion!--
Kate's singing makes me move!
BEAUTIFUL ROAD is her most personal, her most passionate, and her best to date, IMHO.
The title song ranks in my ALL TIME top 10 songs EVER!
Her late husband, Charles Whitham, wrote most of the songs and produced the CD with Tony Garnier.
This collection differs from her first 3 in that Kate seems to set this collection to thematic musical genre.
Problem is, I'm still trying to define it!
....country-rock....folk-rolk....bluegrass-rock....soul-rock.
I give up. It must be all 4!
But it don't matter!---get ye some KT 'BEAUTIFUL ROAD'!
Beautiful Road - A timeless addition to any collection.......2003-12-10
Kate's tremendous talent and warmth set this album above and beyond any album I've personally purchased in the last two years. Kate's voice is so true and familiar, especially on songs like Beautiful Road and I Will Fly, it's as if she were sitting in your living room with a cup of tea and her guitar, rather than her voice emanating from the stereo speakers.
And when she decides to rock out, well I don't know how well that awesome band would fit in my living room, but it still has that personal touch just the same. It's still that warm and friendly Kate, but it seems she ditches the hot tea for a good cold beer on songs like Blue Tin Suitcase and Rain on the Water, deftly demonstrating yet another facet of her multi-dimensional talent.
This album has music on it to satisfy every mood. It is a quintessential collection of top-flight performances by Kate, her band, and her distinguished list of guest musicians. If I had to whittle my collection down to five cds (knocking on wood that I never have to), this would be one of them. Thank you, Kate, for such a truly classic contribution.
Kate Taylor Flies Down A "Beautiful Road".......2003-12-10
Okay music fans of traditional American music, here's your chance to get a chocolate box filled with musical treats - the kind American musicians do best... folk, blues, country, honky tonk. A Gospel duet with Mavis Staples!! It's all here, a rich slice of Music Americana, and all brought beautifully to the first full disc of music by Kate Taylor in many a year. You can't lose with this Cd, from the sweet lament of the opening duet with brother James on "I Will Fly", through the stunningly moving title song "Beautiful Road", and on past marvelous songs of life and love on Martha's Vineyard composed by her husband, Charlie Whitham, ending with yet another beautifully moving duet by Kate and James on "Auld Lang Syne"... this collection of traditional-like music has it all. It's a rich work, produced with a light and moving touch. Kate Taylor's "Beautiful Road" is a clear reflection of an artist and singer who is once again moving forward on up her own musical road of experience and if you listen and ride along, you will deeply enjoy and be moved by the ride... (though you probably still won't figure out what is inside the "Blue Tin Suitcase", track three). Highly recommended!!!

A Perennial Pleasure.......2003-12-09
Over the years we've collected a slew of holiday albums. Some we take out for a single favorite song or a humorous oddity. But this album, "Good People All" is a pleasure to listen to from the first track to the last. Great as background music at a small gathering (though it deserves a more attentive run-through) the album presents both a festive lively air and that ancient wonderful wisdom that comes with winter contemplation. Curl up, watch the snow sparkle, and listen.

Album Description
This delightful recording explores the roots of the legendary guitarist Doc Watson, made just as he was on the verge of national acclaim for his virtuosity in old-time music and traditional song. In these informal sessions, Doc and his extended family perform songs that constitute the bedrock of American old-time music, remembered both from ballads of British origin and uniquely-evolved songs in American tradition, embracing both Anglo-Appalachian and African-American repertoire, as well as early commercial country recordings. In particular, Doc's father-in-law Gaither Carlton emerges as a repository of otherwise-forgotten fiddle and banjo tunes. As Doc himself has commented, "the old-time fiddle tunes and the old-time ballads, there's never been anything prettier nor ever will be." Originally released in 1977. Digitally remastered from the original tapes.
