What a fantstic compilation of American Folk Music and Negro Spirituals. This is music for the whole family and music that you'll enjoy hour after hour. Pure Americana. You don't need to be familiar with this style of music to enjoy it. Many of the songs here are arranged by John Wesley Work II and John Wesley Work III, pioneers in the arranging and documenting of Negro Spirituals and Folk music.

One day I was really in the mood for some African-American spirituals. I looked online and came across this little beauty. It had a lot of the songs that I had been singing that week and I chose to buy it. I had never heard of the Fisk-Jubilee Singers before that. It's awesome and I feel good knowing that I am supporting a worthy cause. I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes toe tapping songs that you can sing everyday.

I bought this CD not knowing anything about the group, having never heard of them before. I was attracted by the photo on the cover, and being a history buff, I thought there might be a great story behind the photo. How right I was. But more than that, there was amazing music behind the photo. It is impossible to listen to this music without a reaction from your spirit. I highly recommend this CD to anyone.

The Fisk University Jubilee Singers, whose nine original ensemble toured the United States and Europe in 1871, are the first group of African-American musicians who attained recognition and the fame.
Recorded for an HDCD format in Ocean Way Nashville Recording Studio, a mid-19th-century church building, this album features the singers of the 2001-2002 academic year who continue the legacy of the group. All the songs are a capella, and most of the arrangements are at least a half-century old. The album, featuring the classics such as "Were You There," "Wade in the Water," and the title piece "In Bright Mansions," is also an "enhanced CD" which includes the production notes viewable as a computer data.

These folk are singing. It's for all of us well rounded people. I have not stopped playing this one yet. IT'S NOT JUST FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH PEOPLE.

Pleasantly Suprised!.......2005-09-27

I was a little skeptical of purchasing this CD given Rev. Pearson's
relatively recent detour from orthodox Christian theology.
This CD is different from the previous three in two ways. #1. There is so much less talk from Pearson which in previous releases consisted of childhood remembrances, funny stories and claims of a visit from a long dead religious figure. #2. Pearson is not singing along with his guest vocalists; which was occasionally annoying in its excess.

This offering keeps the tradition of the live experience; which is always best for gospel and or worship music. There is a little talk from the listed "worship leaders" that serves to connect the songs and engage the live audience. It is just enough. I prefer the latter half of this project from the song "Forever" until the end. The aforementioned song is beautiful and inspiring. A song perfect for a Sunday morning worship gathering or in personal devotion.

If you like the spontaneous, humorous chit chat of Carlton Pearson during the previous projects you'll be thoroughly disappointed with this one. If you're looking for something to enhance your sense of God's closeness or to assist you in your own approach to God in prayer or devotion. Give it a try.

EXCELLANT PRAISE AND WORSHIP.......2005-09-20

Better late than never!! I was just recently introduced to this awesome CD. It takes you from the outer court of Praise from the beginning of the cd, then from there into the inner court of Worship. What more could you ask for, it's all here!! Can't wait to hear what will be released next.

I have them all: "live at Azusa Street 1-4". But this one really tops them all. Especially the slow praise songs like "I love you" or "Wonderful" can lead you directly into the presence of the One. I listened to the CD every morning when I drove to work for a few weeks and it helped me starting the day with joy and peace. If Americans don't like that kind of music any more, dear Carlton, would you please go on releasing more albums like this for the rest of the world? Thank you!

This CD has a good mixture of artists and songs. I especially liked Kirk Talley's "Leave Me A Message", but I cry everytime I hear it. My husband thought it was a pretty song too, and he enjoyed the other songs as well.

Each of the composers here was a significant contributor to the Harlem Renaissance and by tune or text, these works document the coming jazz explosion. Many have never before been recorded.

For over 10 years, The VocalEssence Ensemble Singers and Chorus (conducted by Philip Brunelle) has presented an enduring series of concerts showcasing the talents of trailblazing African American composers.
