Glorious Song collection.......2003-04-06
A fiery blast of praise and worship sings out on this 1988 album. The title track is a fresh version of Psalm 150. "Love Will Be Our Home," written by Steven Curtis Chapman, is a wonderful celebration of family and inclusivity. Not only is this a great listening album, but all of the songs are possible numbers for local worship service consideration. "In Majesty He Will Come" is a thrilling follow-up to "We Shall Behold Him."

A Glorious Voice And Glorious Music.......2005-07-28
I have many Sandi cds. She is one of my favorite female vocalists. I have been lucky enough to attend 3 of her concerts. She had laryngitis at the last concert I attended and still managed to sing great through most of the show. There are no bad songs on this cd and her voice shines whether she is singing an upbeat tune like the title track or beautiful ballads like "Almighty God". There is even a jazzy song, "Someone Up There Loves Me". What can be said about "In Majesty He Will Come/Majesty" other than this is a majestic sounding song. The lyrics of these songs are great as the lyrics of Sandi's songs always are. If you love inspirational music with powerful vocals you will love this cd.
Saving my life, my soul.......2002-03-10
Thanks to a dear friend of mine, I was introduced to Sandi Patti years ago. I was having a difficult time with life. At times I thought I was coming to the end of my rope, uncertain where I was headed. Then I heard "In Heaven's Eyes" and suddenly my life was transformed. I felt myself closer to God than ever. I listed to the tape every day. Before long my life began going in a much more positive direction... I recently purchased the CD from Amazon.com as my tape was wearing out. I continue to turn to Sandi Patti's music for inspiration in my "crazy" life. When I hear her beautiful voice, I know that God really is with me, watching over me..and deep down I know that everything is going to be OK.
Thanks Sandi!! If you had not been introduced into my life over 10 years ago, who knows where I'd be now. You saved my life, my soul.
Wow!.......2001-01-08
It took me three days to stop listening to the first track!!! When I finally ventured into the rest of the CD, I found it as riveting as the first track. Sandi has a voice that can elicit any emotion. In this project, her voice sparkles, weeps, and rejoices as only Sandi can!
Truly Glorious.......2001-01-02
Since my teenage years, I've been a long time fan of Sandi Patti. Her songs is very popular and much sung in churches here in the Philippines. I can't forget her performances in songs like "In Heaven's Eyes", "Upon This Rock", "Via Dolorosa" and my all-time favourite "No Other Name". Since then, I've been looking for her album with "No Other Name" song included, but unfortunately the only available are her latest ones. Good thing that e-commerce is now at hand that I was able to search and purchase Sandi's "Make His Praise Glorious" .... It was through my friend when he used his credit card to order some items too. When the CD was delivered I was very happy...this is my first Sandi Patti album.
The album is a real treasure. Listeners who would like a worshipful sound will appreciate it. If I quoted Kathy Trocolli as the "Powerful Alto", well, Sandi Patti is the "Powerful Soprano". Every song (my favourites in order) is a truly glorious experience...as if her voice was singing with a thousand angels:
1st "No Other Name" - of course, my number one! Hail to Jesus...the name above all name! This hair-raising song touched my spirit and let me realized how powerful and wonderful the name of JESUS. The song is never tiring to hear...just like the name of Jesus. Here, Sandi is at her best;
2nd "In Heaven's Eyes" - a song of hope, "...looking up we'll see compansion's fire, ablaze in heaven's eyes". Sandi delivers the message beautifully;
3rd "Love Will Be Our Home" - superbly written by Steven Curtis Chapman...the message, the tempo, the music is the same as "In Heaven's Eyes". Great! More of this;
4th "Someone Up There Loves Me" - the only song that is pop and jazzy. Very cute!;
5th "In Majesty He Will Come / Majesty" - another powerful song. Join the chorale in singing in His majesty! Just one comment: the song "In Majesty He Will Come" alone can make it more beautiful rather than combined with "Majesty" which I found the arrangement a little trying hard;
6th "Come Let's Worship Him" - with orchestra but a little upbeat. Celebrate Jesus and feel the dance of the song;
7th "Make His Praise Glorious" - great opening and carrier song. This fully orchestrated song is like an intro to a movie. Enjoy hearing the different instruments. Unique but still remains praise-like and worshipful;
8th "In His Presence" - this another worshipful piece is a grand ending song of the album. Listen as the song soothe your soul by His holy presence (my only observation is that why does the title become "In His Presence" while the lyrics especially the chorus was written in quotes more in "In Your Presence". Anyway, I like "In His Presence" better...the appeal is a little respectful);
9th "Almighty God" - a delightful song that describes the greatness of our Lord. The song has a local version ("Dakilang Diyos") and hearing the original one is as splendid as the Filipino version;
10th "Come Before Him" - hear trumpets and marches in this exalting praise song.
Since then I've been purchasing Sandi's CDs. For the record, I already have 5 of her albums and so far "Make His Praise Glorious" is the best. It's because all songs are delivered so beautifully. I would like to thank the people behind this album...may they continue to work with Sandi's heavenly voice. To Sandi, I'm truly blessed with your songs...continue loving the Lord. You have lots of fans here in the Philippines.
Her Best.......2000-10-19
... .
Now, as far as this album, this is her best, which is a huge compliment. There simply isn't a track on this CD that is anything other than exceptionally good.
This CD was done when Sandi was on top of the Christian music world. This CD is about as fun and spiritually uplifting as it gets.

Album Description
Recording of twentieth-century American psalm settings features many recorded premieres, including works by Hovhaness, Nelson, Adler, and Hanson. Other composers included are Ives, Starer, Thompson, and Pinkham. This album was recorded in the splendid setting of Methuen Memorial Music Hall with its marvelous organ and acoustics. |
Gloriæ Dei Cantores has a mission to preserve and perform the finest sacred music. From its beginnings, the choir has also felt a special mission and an affinity for American music. There is a rich bounty of great American music that is rarely heard, and for that reason, Gloriæ Dei has now embarked on a series of recordings of American psalm settings.

A remarkable compilation of 20th century American psalmody........2004-05-19
Elizabeth C. Patterson and her Gloriae Dei Cantores (Singers to the Glory of God) chorus had been total unknowns to me prior to about a year ago. The group had been brought to my attention then by Mark O'Connor's publicist, at which time he had been the guest artist on their "Appalachian Sketches" album. But that album, excellent as it was, turned out to be just the small tip of a significant iceberg in terms of choral singing, and particularly the American traditions of sacred choral singing over the last half-millennium.
I've since collected quite a few of their albums, and, to switch metaphors, this "Make His Praise Glorious" album may turn out to be the mother lode. Actually a religious choral community based on Cape Cod, MA, Gloriae Dei Cantores members have literally dedicated their lives to this music genre. In addition to recording at their "home base," they have also recorded frequently in Mechanics Hall, Worcester, MA and at Methuen Memorial Hall, Methuen, MA (where this particular recording was made). (For those who aren't familiar with the organ tradition in America, Methuen Memorial Hall is where the original organ in Boston's Symphony Hall found its "final resting place" after the formation of the Boston Symphony Orchestra rendered it redundant. Fully restored, reconstructed and revoiced in 1947, this organ is one of the finest historical organs in the U.S., and its permanent home-Methuen Memorial Hall-was built specifically for its properties, and for its perpetual preservation as well.)
The music on this album is as wide a variety of settings of the Psalms by 20th century American composers as one could ask for, covering a variety of liturgical points of view. Samuel Adler and Robert Starer (both Jewish refugees from Germany and Austria respectively who settled in the U.S and built significant careers in music afterwards) take their own individualistic approaches to their choices of psalms. Adler's, in English, is heroic, resplendent with two trumpets supporting the chorus. Starer's, in Hebrew, with piano accompaniment, are more reflective and smaller in scale, but equally well-done.
Alan Hovhaness's "Make a Joyful Noise" is a cantata in four parts based on Psalms 54, 55 and 66. Like much of Hovhaness's music, with its reflection of his Armenian roots, "Make a Joyful Noise" is otherworldly; simply a beautiful piece of writing. The opening Prelude is for trombone solo and organ; quite a piece by itself. The remaining three parts are the actual psalms; all three of them have the Methuen organ supporting the chorus and the second and fourth parts in addition have a brass quartet of two trumpets and two trombones. A joyful noise indeed!
There are four brief a capella motets set to psalms by David Pinkham, and excellent sacred choral works by Ronald A. Nelson, Howard Hanson and Randall Thompson. Thompson's setting of Psalm 23 ("The Lord is My Shepherd") is particularly beautiful, with the chorus accompanied by harp. (The booklet notes point out that Thompson set this for chorus plus optional organ, piano or harp. I believe that Elizabeth Patterson made a very wise choice in the harp option; it fits the music perfectly.)
All of the works already described were written in the middle third of the 20th century. All are readily accessible, and none could truly be called "modern." That description best fits the remaining work on the album,Charles Ives's setting of Psalm 90. Originally written in 1894, and possibly performed a few years later, when Ives was organist at the Central Presbyterian Church in New York, the work was then lost, and then reconstructed by Ives in 1923, partially from sketches he had preserved but largely from memory. (Ives had a prodigious memory, apparently, and could reconstruct works decades after they had been lost or abandoned.) Its first true public performance didn't take place until 1966,when the Gregg Smith Singers presented the official premiere. (The Robert Shaw Chorale then performed it the following year.)
This remarkable work is full of many Ives compositional touchstones, made famous in his later works, that belie its original date of composition. Written for chorus, organ and bells, it is in every sense a visionary work, full of unusual harmonies, stacked chords, harmonic ambiguities, and even tone clusters, and, as well, transcendent atmosphere (provided by the bells). Yet, despite this fearsome description of its constituents, the work is fresh and accessible, and, like the very best of Ives, very moving. In a phrase, it is an eleven-minute masterpiece, and easily the shining star of this album. And to think that it is the oldest work on the album, and by so many years!
Gloriae Dei Cantores do a splendid job with this difficult work, and this performance easily suffices as the best example of an Ives psalm in the absence of a remastering of the Gregg Smith Singers LPs that had so many good Ives choral works on them. Better yet, other albums by Gloriae Dei Cantores have additional Ives psalms on them.
As I finish writing these thoughts, we are less than 24 hours away from official observance of the 50th year since Ives's passing. A fitting tribute, I'd like to think.
