Sailin' Shoes demonstrates just how briskly Little Feat was developing in their early 1970s formative years. A pronounced step up from the Southern California quartet's critically praised 1971 debut, it's not as fully realized as the Feat's 1973 zenith, Dixie Chicken. But it's not far behind, and that's saying something. The final recording made by the original quartet (the band swelled to six members after founding bassist and Mothers of Invention alumni Roy Estrada split), Little Feat circa 1972 is a lean, energetic outfit. "Cold, Cold, Cold," "Tripe Face Boogie," "Apolitical Blues," and "Teenage Nervous Breakdown" are blunter rockers than what would follow. Lowell George's title track and Bill Payne's "Got No Shadow" and "Cat Fever," meanwhile, presage the more limber direction the group was headed. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Feat were a Force Majeur.......2007-04-12

For those who aren't exposed to this band -

They were the most complete rock and roll band I know. The subtleties (sp) of phrasing and layers of harmony that seldom ran in a congruent, typical form is what impresses me. 6 musicians loosely playing in six different directions around a common theme is what you will hear in their best efforts. They were tight as a nun's privates. Live was as impressive as the studio - only more freeform. They shared a common musical brain.

Torque your parametric equalizer in any direction and you will hear the individual work. Layered = beauty.

They were the Bomb Diggity.

Elton John called them the Greatest Rock Band - I agree.

5 out of 5 stars I GOT CAT FEEEE-VER!.......2006-05-05

One of the best albums ever by one of the most underrated, underappreciated and unheard of bands of all time. Great songwriting, musicianship, vocals etc. A great guitar album as well. Lowell George was one of the greatest slide guitarists around. People often like to classify Little Feat as southern rock but don't be fooled- their styles are wide ranged- from New Orleans blues, R&B, & Stones style R&R.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet memories...........2005-05-01

I couldn't even hope to improve on the excellent comments that precede - but wanted to add a quick note of a recent discovery. For those who loved & miss Br'r George & crew, take a listen at a group called 'NRBQ'....I think they're about the closest thing to the original 'Dixie Chickenz' that's come down the pike since Lowell's departure. A li'l different seasonings, but the stylings are there. Hope y'all like 'em too!

5 out of 5 stars Hands down, their best album........2005-02-10

A fun album to listen to for sure. The version of "Willin" here is much better than the one on the first album. "Trouble," "Got No Shadow," and "Apolitical Blues" are equally great, and there are several more standouts. There's no comparison between their later music and this. The influence of Zappa's attitude is more evident here than anywhere else in Lowell George's music, even though it's country boogie rock. Truly original music and one of my favorites, period.

5 out of 5 stars Kick Off Your Sailin' Shoes.......2005-01-10

As a collection of songs, this might be Little Feat's strongest effort ever. Americana Rock in the general vein of Moby Grape, The Band or American-Beauty era Dead.

While the songs are great, this record's secret weapon lies in the fact that you kind of slip into it's groove and before you know it, a collection of rather short songs becomes a groove album! This doesn't happen on most Little Feat albums due to their more mercurial nature in styles.

The original version of the almost-standard "Willin'" is here too.

Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet—79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! 5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

3 out of 5 stars Some nice ones, but they've done a little better.......2006-10-23

It's not the greatest album they ever made, but this one still manages to meet the basic standards necessary to craft a listenable Isleys album, not to mention the pressure that they were probably under following the death of O'Kelly Isley after the release of their last album to that point. The silky-smooth voice of Ronald Isley beautifies the sensuous title track, and the funky "Everything Is Alright" was one of the best uptempo numbers they'd had in years.

3 out of 5 stars okay, but nothing special.......2006-05-29

The mid-1980s was a time of major changes for R&B dynasty The Isley Brothers. After nearly 30 years in the business, the twin calamities of the breakup of the powerful 3+3 collaboration between younger and older Isleys (the younger siblings went on to form Isley-Jasper-Isley) and the passing of original member O'Kelly Isley left the group in a tailspin.

Now down to a duo, brothers Ronald and Rudolph soldiered on under The Isley Brothers name with a new heavily-synthesized sound that was largely written and produced by Angela Winbush, who was starting her successful solo career after the breakup of René & Angela (and eventually would marry Ronald).

One of the first results of Winbush and the Isleys' labor was the album "Smooth Sailin'." Though it was warmly received and spawned the hit "Smooth Sailin' Tonight," the release could almost be considered a step back for the group due to a certain blandness that permeates the album.

Though Winbush and the Isleys are immensely talented as individuals, the album is filled with somewhat warmed-over tracks best suited for René & Angela B-sides. The first four tracks are almost laughable, as the duo tries to capture the essence of contemporary music but fails miserably. Overproduction by Winbush and phoned-in vocals by the Isleys didn't help things. Even the tribute to O'Kelly Isley, "Send a Message" seems a bit boring, honoring a dynamic singer with a more or less forgettable track.

The last half of the album fares a lot better, with "Smooth Sailin' Tonight," "Somebody I Used To Know," "Come My Way," and "I Wish " finally certifying this as a serious Isley Brothers release with their moody, chord-heavy Quiet Storm-ready romance. If you buy this album, it will be for these tracks.

I can't recommend "Smooth Sailin' " to anyone but hard-core Isley fans that want to complete their collection. If you like the general direction the group was taking in the `80s and `90s, choose "Spend the Night" or "Mission to Please" first, because they are far and away better albums.

4 out of 5 stars Not typical Isley Brothers Style.......2003-10-14

The title song, Smooth Sailing is very reminiscent of 70s and 80s
groove songs. The music takes me back to the disco era; I would
recommend it if you are a true Isley Brother fan. The title song
is worth whatever you pay. It's still played on slow jam radio shows. Don't expect the overfunk; these guys have grown up.

3 out of 5 stars pretty Good Set.......2003-03-20

being a Fan from back in the day the Overall Production&Vibe of this Set has Some really Good Moments but I Wouldn't put this on there Must have Sets though.I give them Props for doing there thing after losing there Oldest Brother O'Kelly.also Considering they lost Chris Jasper they truly had to re-group&I think they did a Pretty Good Job here.Together with Angelia Winbush they bring a Tight Slow-Jam with "Smooth Sailin".

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Great Comeback.......2003-01-10

The Isley Brothers (O'Kelly, Rudolph & Ronald) had finally bounced back from the departure of the younger members of their band (Isley, Jasper, Isley). They signed with Warner Bros. and released a workmanlike (but unspectacular) album, Masterpiece, in 1986. The group's foundation was then rocked by the sudden death of oldest brother O'Kelly from a massive heart attack. But with each ending comes a new beginning. Angela Winbush (formerly of Rene and Angela) had seen her professional relationship with Rene Moore go by the wayside. She had some tracks left over that she felt would work well on The Isleys and, upon meeting Ronald, began a relationship that would culminate in marriage. Her vast skill as a songwriter and producer on this album brought The Isleys (carrying on as a duo) all the way back. The set kicks off with three uptempo numbers. "Everything Is Alright" was a perfect song for the occasion. Kelly wouldn't have wanted his death to be the end of the act that was his life's passion, and his brothers intended to carry on into a fourth decade of epic performances. Ronald gives a great performance on "Send A Message," a tribute to his late brother. Angela crafted the song perfectly to the Isley style. It fits Ronald like silk pajamas! The title cut, "Smooth Sailing Tonight," puts the brothers in familiar territory: the bedroom. And they stay there for the rest of the album. "Somebody I Used To Know" and "I Wish" are a couple of really nice ballads. "Come My Way" is a remake of a Rene and Angela song, that I think beats the original. Rene Moore wound up suing Angela Winbush, claiming co-authorship of songs on this album (I don't know how that one turned out). The last time I saw the Isleys in concert (around the time of "Mission To Please"), only Ronald and Ernie appeared. Rudolph had retired and Marvin had ceased performing due to his bout with diabetes. Angela Winbush made a cameo appearance as one of the background singers, and sang a verse from "Angel," her #1 R&B hit as a solo act.

        5 out of 5 stars A Houston classic...embarrassingly slept-on.......2006-12-10

E.S.G.'s 1995 album "Sailin' da South" is one of my favorite southern hip hop albums and it is maybe the most underrated and slept-on album in my collection. E.S.G. is one of the Houston MCs who helped pioneer rap in that city, and this album is amazing. It's easy to see where a lot of the rappers in Houston, even today, got their style from. Ever since E.S.G., guys from Texas have been using the same syrupy drawl and slow rolling production style that is so great on this album. E.S.G. is a good lyricist, always speaking proudly of his hometown. He also tells stories of crime, death, and regular gangster rap topics in a better, elevated fashion. Mostly though, he just lays back and lets the beats do the talking. The production on this album is outstanding. The producers are masters on the mixing boards. They take a lot of cues from west coast G-funk, utilizing the same slow, heavy rolling bass, whiny synthesizers, and chorus breaks but still makes a style strictly his own. The beats are so funky and every track shines musically. "Sailin' da South" is one of my favorite southern rap albums, it just has such a great feel and is very consistent. It's out of print and very hard to find today, but I still recommend "Sailin' da South" highly as I can.

After a great intro that speaks of murder and crime in Houston, E.S.G.'s album begins with "187 Skillz," which has a winding synthesizer-looped beat and tells stories of tough experiences in Houston. "Crooked Streets" has a laidback, rolling beat like most of the songs here do, the lyrics speak sadly of corruption in the ghetto. "R.I.P." deals with death over crime and unworthy reasons, and like always the beat is extraordinary. My favorite song is definitely "Swangin' and Bangin,'" a song that lyrically and musically is one of my favorites ever. The beat is the best, with a great whining synth line and heavy bass with some happy strings in the chorus, and the hook has a call and response that always makes me want to yell. The lyrics are a laidback representation of the city of Houston, and, in E.S.G.'s words, "how they do it down south." This song is just so good, a chopped and screwed version also appears on the disc. "Let `Em Know" has a nice chorus and light, head-nodding production with real lyrics. Another one of my favorites is "Beauty and the Beast," where E.S.G. speaks of the troubles of trying to survive over a musical backing that is one of the best. "G-Ride" is just that, perfect for the car at any time. "Baller of the Year" is as good as any on the album, and "Smoke On" is a collaboration with a competent female MC that has an electronic-sounding chorus. The album ends with the aptly-titled "Murder Outro," a great end to a classic album.

"Sailin' da South" is a nearly perfect, often beautiful album of amazing hip hop. This album is a really underrated classic that should be spoken of in the same breath as UGK and Geto Boys albums in terms of Houston rap, but sadly is not. In any event, this album is full of remarkable, laidback g-funk style music from beginning to end and it's perfect to listen to at any time. These beats are insane! I recommend "Sailin' da South" to everybody, if it comes your way it'd be a crime not to pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars Classic H-Town Bangers One After Another.......2006-11-29

Houston's E.S.G.came thru with a 1995 album, Sailin' Da South, one of those few albums you can listen to through without skipping, a feat hard for many of my other favorites, even other classics, where I skip a song or two. First, ESG hits you with sick and serious flows throughout; he gets your tears jerkin on "Crooked Streets" and "R.I.P." where he reminisces on homies that didn't make it. He also gets upbeat on tracks like "Let 'Em Know," "G-Ride." Beatwise, the beats are among some of the best 3rd coast, and hip-hop period. Producers Sean "Solo" Jemison and Jermaine "Mr.Optimo" Chretien lace up melodic G-Funk beats that'll get ya head noddin for a short but sweet 50 minutes. Beats like "187 Skillz" and "Beauty and the Beast" are hard and menacing. But for the most part, the beats are musically beautiful, combining west coast whiny synths with laid back, sunny, slower, and at times, twangy, Texas beats. Listen to the beats on "Baller Of The Year," "R.I.P.," "For All The G's," among most others to see what I'm sayin'. Don't forget the original and screwed versions of "Swangin and Bangin," a perfect southern anthem over a gorgeous, melodic southern beat. This album slams all the way thru. E.S.G. shoulda got mad more dap for Sailin' Da South! Being primarily a West Coast rap fan, I dig this album more than a majority of those albums; that is how awesome this one is.

E.S.G. is a legend throughout the south, esspecially Texas, but in no way gets the credit he deserves. "Sailin' Da South" was released over 10 years ago, and to this day its still a classic. Bump this all the time when im ridin' or throw it in the CD player when im chillin' @ home. This is a must have for southern hip-hop fans. Peace

4 out of 5 stars Stellar example of southern rap........2003-05-27

I first got interested in ESG after hearing soem guest work he did on Big Moe's City of Syrup, so I decided to pick this album up. It's a really good album, an example of southern rap as it should be.
The standout song to me is the screwed mix of Swanging and Banging. I've always had a liking for screwed mixes of songs, and this one seems particularly good. They also have a normal speed version on the CD which just doesn't seem as good for some reason.

If you like southern rap, this is definately something to listen to.

        5 out of 5 stars Swangin n' Bangin.......2000-05-15

When Smooth Sailin" was originally released, CDs weren't available. This CD sounds better than the original release. This is a classic country album, probably the best that TG Sheppard released.
