Is Sarah McLachlan a secret punk rocker? To be sure, her rebellion is hushed. On Afterglow, her first studio album since 1997's Surfacing, McLachlan's music is as tempered as ever; at times even the piano chords at the heart of the sound are tucked neatly beneath layer upon layer of strings and overdubbed voices. Listen to what's being sung within this soothing aural bed, though, and hear the just-before-sleep murmurings of the quietest riot grrl: "I'm a train wreck waiting to happen.... a wildfire born of frustration," "How stupid could I be.... you're no good for me, but you're the only one I see," "I have to push just to see how far you'll go." The latter song ("Push") resolves itself with the assurance, "You complete me." Ultimately, McLachlan fans will be comforted again by what turns out to be her reliably untroubled aesthetic. --Rickey Wright

"I know you can't resist, trying to re-open a sore...".......2007-05-08
Afterglow by Sarah McLachlan is surprisely moving and wonderfully produced. I am not normally a McLachlan super-fan but some of her songs before this album are quite engaging. I decided to give this album a chance, standout tracks include: Time, Perfect Girl, Dirty Little Secret, Stupid, and Answer. Sarah's voice has improved and her lyrics are at its strongest. I could listen to the track, Time all day long, it sucks you in after the first 20 seconds, amazing! So whether you hate or love her, Afterglow will have you bathed in it for awhile. Enjoy!
afterglow.......2007-03-27
delivered in good shape and timely. and I love the cd its great music.
Another great CD from Sarah McLachlan.......2007-02-20
I particularly enjoyed this CD - as inspired an endeavor as Mirrorball.
love it.......2007-02-15
I know that this review won't be very helpful, all I can say is that I love this album. Been listening to it for a couple of years now, and it's a fave when I'm in a mood to be mellow. I am giving this five stars so that amazon will recommend more music like this in my personal recommendations. Same with Fumbling Toward Ecstasy.
Classic Sarah.......2007-02-06
I can listen to this CD over and over and still find it refreshing and beautiful. Sarah's songs are soothing to my soul.

Album Description
"All The Rage" is the debut release from LA-based singer/songwriter Cary Brothers. These four tracks, produced by Chad Fischer (Alexi Murdoch), run the gamut from power pop ("Supposed To Be") to acoustic folk ("Honestly"), but they all share one thing in common - as Cary says, "They're all pretty much straight from the heart, whether it's being broken or put back together."
Cary's song "Blue Eyes" is also featured alongside tracks from Coldplay, The Shins, and Simon & Garfunkel on the soundtrack of the Fox Searchlight film GARDEN STATE, starring Zach Braff, Natalie Portman, and Peter Sarsgaard.
Customer Reviews:
Too Few Songs, Too Much Money .......2006-03-20
I Paid $9 for this CD, and while it is a good cd, there are only 3 songs on it for a total of 14 minutes of listening pleasure. I find this to be a rip off. Do yourself a favor and buy a longer CD for the money.
Buy it!.......2005-09-08
Excellent mini album that includes some music from Scrubs and Garden State. Well worth buying and Cary has another album out this month as well. (If you like this album try Lucky Jim - Our Troubles End Tonight) No need to try before you buy - all 4 songs get 5 stars from me, excellent voice and each song has a different feel to it.
Heartbreaking and beautiful.......2005-08-11
Cary Brothers is an excellent musician and songwriter, and in "All the Rage", he really showcases his talent. I saw him play live in a small indie record store before I even got to hear the EP. I wasn't all that familiar with him but I really like his song, "Blue Eyes" from Garden State. So to say the least, when I saw him perform a mini-concert for the 10 or so people in the store, I was more than impressed, and from that point on I became a fan. I also got to meet him for a few minutes after the show. He was very down-to-earth and seemed humble. For the most part, his songs sound mello and dreamy. A few of his songs boast heartwrenching melodies, especially "Something" which is particulary haunting, and is comparable to "Blue Eyes" if not better. I can't wait until the LP comes out, which he said should come out in this month of August.
Nice debut record.......2005-07-28
Cary Brothers is something of an engima for me-- a folky, rootsy singer-songwriter type, this is pretty far outside the domain of my usual listening, and yet there's something about his music that worked pretty well for me.
What I think it is may be that there's a sense of honesty without pretention that circulates through his record-- when he sings about trying to put a past romance out of his mind and quietly mumbles "I wish your love away", you feel like he does. Brothers' vocals feel like they come from the midwest-- a sort of road weary sound. But he adds to that a good range and roundness of tone that I think is often missing in these forms.
This EP, consisting of four songs, is his debut. Three of the songs are folky pop pieces and one ("Supposed to Be") is a driving alt-pop piece. Although its a decent number, it doesn't quite fit in on the record, and its electric guitars sit somewhat uncomfortably amongst the rest of the pieces on here.
But the rest is all this kind of bluesy, folky pop stuff-- smokey ("Blue Eyes", also featured on the "Garden State" soundtrack), bubbling and delicate ("Something") and wistful and brilliant ("Honesty"). One thing the record definitely indicates, we can expect big things from Brothers. Recommended.
Cary is amazing!.......2005-06-08
Cary Brothers has a wonderful, soothing voice and all the songs on this EP are great! He is one of the best emerging arists right now and I can't wait for him to release a full length album!

Album Description
This new disc takes the listener on a journey from the depths of despair to the pinnacles of joy, featuring rarely heard virtuoso works for male choir by Carl Orff, Jean Sibelius, Samuel Barber, Josquin Des Pres and Claude Debussy. The newly commissioned "Two Laments on Dylan Thomas" by Kenneth Jennings, Schubert's haunting "Grab und Mond" and Randall Thompson's "Alleluia" are saturated with Cantus' emotionally-charged singing. This disc is a 24-bit high resolution recording and comes in a sumptuous sleeve, with a beautifully presented 34 page booklet.
Customer Reviews:
Cantus has done it again!.......2003-12-07
Cantus has done it again with ...Against the Dying of the Light. This CD although much more secular and sacred, still demonstrates the power of music through singing. This album takes the listener back to some the very roots of choral music with compositions dating back to fifteenth century. Cantus brings out all despair and joy of the texts in ...Against the Dying of the Light. Although most of the pieces are sung in Latin, a story of greif and sarrow to consolation and joy is clearly told. All avid choral singers must have this CD. The "Two Laments on Dylan Thomas" are simply profound. You will not be dissapointed with this CD. This male choral group is second to none!
Wonderful.......2002-12-31
As a vocalist with a love for male a cappella, Cantus has struck my fancy in numerous ways. This album is a WONDERFUL example of their artistry. Their rendition of Randall Thompson's Alleluia is stunning, as are all of the other tracks. Truly worth the purchase.

Album Description
I Believe in Angels Singing is an anthology of twenty-five songs remembered from the era of the Underground Railroad, recorded at homes and churches in eastern Ohio and West Virginia during the spring and summer of 1996.
The title, I Believe in Angels Singing, is taken from the words of Neilda Pitts recollecting older people singing as they picked cotton in a large field near her childhood home. Sister Pitt's performance of "Soon I Will Be Done with the Troubles of this World" opens the tape. Other performers include her mother, Bertha Tolliver, along with Ethel Caffie-Austin, John Jackson, Ken Jacobsen, Phil Wiggins, Emma Perry Freeman, Verta Cooper and the Northern Kentucky Brotherhood.
Ethel Caffie-Austin, with her huge and rich voice and free flying piano style, has toured Europe and is know as West Virginia's Queen of Gospel Music. She teaches at the Augusta Heritage Center at Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, WV during the summer. The late John Jackson also toured widely and was renowned for his profound Piedmont Blue style. Here he plays banjo, guitar and sings a song learned from each of his parents.
Phil Wiggins of the internationally known Cephus and Wiggins Piedmont blues performing duo gives us his own original, exquisitely rendered, impassioned mouth harp appeals in pursuit of freedom.
Along with these well-known artists I Believe in Angels Singing gives voice to lesser known artists who sing in local churches. Several of the tracks consist of songs performed by descendents of a community of Virginia slaves given their freedom in the mid-1800s and now settled in the Ohio River Valley.

Sir Thomas Allen makes the point in a note with this delightful collection of 25 ballads that he rates it beside his many recordings of music heavyweights like Wagner and Verdi. There is no need to justify his enthusiasm, for it is clear from the outset that he treats the music with the sort of complete respect that has made him one of our most-loved singers. It is too easy to be dismissive of this repertoire, but when it is taken at its own value and sung and played with honesty, as it is here, the results are heartwarming. Allen recalls hearing the songs in the family home following the two world wars, "a time when there seemed a need for reassurance." Perhaps that time is with us again, and these performances strike a chord. There are many old friends here and perhaps some new discoveries. Who can resist the beautifully constructed "Love, could I only tell thee" or that old potboiler "The Lost Chord", especially when given with such warmth? A picture shows Allen and family in full vocal spate. At the piano is his father, to whose memory he dedicates the disc. --Keith Clarke

Learning Overtone Singing.......2007-04-12

For those interested in beginning to learn overtone singing from Tuva and other musical styles, check out the excellent book and CD called "Harmonic Overtones: Magical Vibrations in Voice and Music".

Punk to Tuva...a leap of epic ...well...as big as the plains (maybe).......2005-07-26
I grew up listening to British and Australian garage and punk, amongst other `alternative' styles of music...and one day I heard a busker singing in a strange throaty whistle sound with background music. I remembered the term `Tuva' from his sign and pretty much moved on.
Years later I came across this album in a tiny independent music store in Melbourne (Incidentally where I used to purchase other styles of music) and the word `Tuva' resonated. I bought the CD. I listen to the picture generating tracks at least once a month and travel to the plains every single time.
No CD generates such an amazing visual experience in my experience (and I mean it). If you can find it...buy it, no matter what style of music you generally listen too.
Astounding!.......2004-06-25
I have to tell you, I bought this CD thinking it would just be some weird music, and it is weird. But it's SO much more than that. It's absolutely beautiful. It's astounding. I'm not an expert on throat singing, but from a listener's point of view it seems to be a way for a single voice to generate entire chords -- three or even four notes at a time. Whistling sounds, groaning sounds, all sorts of sounds you've never heard a human being make. But with a thousand years of tradition these weird raw materials have been turned into an incredible kind of music that sometimes sounds like the blues, sometimes a little like demented bluegrass, sometimes like folk opera, and sometimes like the singing of another species entirely. All of which would be amazing enough, but the most amazing part is how enjoyable it is to listen to. I bought this CD to weird-out my friends, but I find myself listening to it alone as I work, or just listening to it and doing nothing. It's mesmerizing. There's a nice fat little book with it that appears to be full of all sorts of interesting information about the Tuvan tradition, but to tell the truth I haven't read it. I'm too caught up in the music. Buy this CD and expand your horizons. You'll never listen to music the same way again.
The best available intro to Tuvan music (if you can find it).......2002-06-12
I've got several CDs of Tuvan music, and this one is the best introduction for someone new to the subject. Tuva is a small region in Russian Asia, nestled in the mountains between Siberia and Mongolia. Herders who got bored spending their days in the countryside on horseback developed throat-singing, in which a singer can sing two notes at once, a low drone and a higher melody. The high part is produced from the overtones of the low note. The style began with a cappella singing, then was extended to include music on banjo- and violin-like instruments, with a rhythm like American cowboy music. This CD includes plenty of songs by Kongar-ool Ondar and Kaigal-ool Khovalyg, two of the first Tuvans to tour America. There are several examples of various styles of hoomei (the Tuvan word for throat-singing--the English spelling of this and ALL Tuvan words varies from album to album), including by an 11-year-old student of Ondar's. There are examples of modern variations on Tuvan music, including the title track from the "Fly, Fly My Sadness" collaboration album between Tuvan group Huun-Huur-Tu and the Bulgarian women's choir Angelite. And there is Paul Pena, the blind American blues singer (and writer of Steve Miller's "Jet Airliner") who learned throat-singing on his own and won an award at a Tuvan throat-singing festival, as chronicled in the Oscar-nominated documentary "Genghis Blues". (The CD suggests that it includes a live version of Pena's award-winning performance, but doesn't explain how he could be playing two guitars at once.) My only complaint with the CD is that there is too much of Mikhail Alperin's Tuvan-Russian hybrid projects (4 tracks), and not enough traditional Tuvan songs done with instruments, especially the banjo-like doshpuluur. A perfect Tuvan compilation would include the caravan-drivers' song ("Tying Siirtuktiilerining Iri") and "Ches Bulungum"; for those, look for the CD "Tuva: Voices from the Land of the Eagles".
What makes this CD a better choice than "Land of the Eagles" is the 64-page book on Tuva that is included in the "Deep in the Heart" package. It provides an introduction to Tuvan history and culture, important notes on cuisine (like a recipe for blood sausage, and how to prepare and serve the honored dish "Fat of Lamb's Tail"), and simple explanations of how to throat-sing. For example, to perform the whistling sound of the sygyt style of hoomei, put your mouth in the position to make the sound "ur" as in "urn", tighten your throat, and do a Kermit the Frog impersonation as you sing "ur-ee, ur-ee". Now go practice.
Astound Yourself and Your Friends!.......2001-06-24
I first heard Tuva throatsinging while watching the documentary "Genghis Blues", the story of blues musician Paul Pena, who, incredibly, taught himself this complex singing style. He then traveled to Tuva to learn more about it in the land where it was born. I immediately fell in love with throatsinging and logged on to Amazon to see what cds were available. I wanted a comprehensive guide to the styles and variations of Tuva throatsinging. This cd is truly amazing and the book that comes with it is very helpful in laying down a basic understanding of the sound and its complexities. It takes you through each track explaining styles and instrumental accompaniments and variations. Lest you think this cd may be boring and pedantic, I hasten to add that my first response to the cd was one of sheer exhileration. There is a joy to the music that invokes riding fast in the wind, laughing with the freedom of movement. The spirit and humor of the Tuvan people come across in every track.
I LOVE THIS CD. My cat, on the other hand, fled to the back of a closet when he first heard Kargyraa.

Customer Reviews:
Moravian songs, via Janacek, Godar, Bittova and Skampa.......2006-05-09
This is a unique recording of Janacek's transcriptions of Moravian folk songs. Originally for piano and voice, they have been transcribed by Slovak composer Vladimir Godar for string quartet and (occasionally) three-voice male chorus. Here they are performed by renowned Czech singer and violinist Iva Bittova, accompanied by the Skampa Quartet and chorus. The effect is not so much of classical liede, but of authentic eastern European "popular" songs - the sonority of the string quartet adds to this in no small part. Janacek would be proud.
Skampa Quartet is great - the singer... yikes.......2005-07-28
I honestly did not know what I was getting myself into when I bought this CD. I love Janacek, I love folk songs... how could I go wrong? Iva Bittova! I was concerned that she would have a 50yr old woobly voice, but instead what exists is a thin VERY nasal tone... perhaps she should be singing traditional Bulgarian music! The voice is expressive, just ugly.
The recording quality is not very good, either. On many of the tracks, Iva seems to be muffled and in the background of the recording.
Really - dont waste your time and money, unless you really would just like to have a recording of over 50 Janacek songs.
