Customer Reviews:
A great jump plues, blues & R+B album..........2003-12-08
Janiva's latest is also her greatest. The opening song I'm Lost Without you, is a jump number that really swings, the band is tight and sounds terrific. Janiva's vocals are exellent, she really has a great voice. Energetic music that crosses many generes...
A great singer & a great band make for a GREAT cd!.......2003-12-07
Janiva's latest cd is one of her best. high qaulity 1st rate jazz and jump blues musicians sound tight here, with Janiva's sweet vocals that are both delicate and mature, and very appealing! She handles jump blues like the title song, and the opening song, as well as a great sexy rendition of a Billie Holiday tune. a great cd al lthe way thru!
A perfect modern day blues cd, with a touch of retro.......2003-12-07
Janiva Magness is both modern and retro at the same time! I saw her last night live at Martini Blues in Huntington Beach, CA. She was teriffic, in fact the highlight of the night was when she sang "I'm lost Without you," a great jump blues number that Magness wraps her appealing voice around! It is also the 1st song on this continiously exellent cd. Stormy Blues however might be the best track here, it shows the sensitivity and vulnerability in Magness' singing voice(it was a favorite song of Billie Holiday's, and Holiday wrote it). All of the selctions have thier moments and the cd is very upbeat overall, aside from the occasioanl ballad. Use What You Got is also a charmingly witty song, Magness really digs into it. Her band is so tight and swingin', they know how to jump the blues. Magness dresses and looks like she came out of 1949(she looks like glamorous supper club singer, and sometimes sounds like one too). Janiva is the perfect amounts modern and retro at the same time! A great blues cd, that jazz fans may also enjoy!
A versitile set of jump blues and R&B by a fine singer.......2003-11-01
Janiva Magness has been making a name for herself in Orange County as one of the top and only female blues singers on the scene, ever since she started playing the Rennasaince Cafe in Dana Point, now she's been regularly at the Martini Blues club in Huntington Beach. I have not had the pleasure of seeing her live, but I will after hearing this cd, I'll be at her next gig in Sherman Oaks, she shows a lot of versitality as a vocalist able to swing, and jump the blues and even make sappier R&B ballads sound better tahn they should. This may not be a set for jazz or blues purists because there are a number of funky R&Bish tunes here, however "Stormy Blues" is easily the highlight of the album, and it shows what a sensious and great vocalist Mgness really is, and shows that magness has the good taste to revive this little performed Billie Holiday gem! The poener a energetic jump blues is wonderful, as well as the catchy title tune, unfortionately there are a couple throwaway r&b(Aretha Franklyn type)ballads, but one can overlook that. The rest of the album falls in the category of blues rooted funky R&B, however the main reason t acquire this cd is for Magness' amazing powerhouse voals and for the very high musicianship of her hot jumpin' 6 piece tight band, they jump and take hot solos thoughout, which will appeal to the jazz fan. A nice overall blues cd wich shows how versitile Magness amd her band can be. In the future it would be nice to hear Mgness on more jump blues and blues pieces and less R&B ballands and funk.

Get Ready to Shake Your Caboose!.......2007-03-20
This is the debut CD for husband and wife duo Kristie and Roy Agee, who have been delighting eager audiences since childhood. With Kathy on vocals and Roy on trombone, they are sharing their music in venues across the US, playing from a list of over 40 songs.
One of Kristie's goals was to make a record "to encourage people of all shapes, sizes, ages and abilities to consider self acceptance." She has succeeded. This is an inspiring and moving (literally) collection with songs meant to bring you up and not mock you down.
1. Big Long Sliding Thing ~ Despite its lude sounding title this is a slow, sway me start to this big music CD. Very sexy and sexually suggestive. Love it.
2. Big Fat Mamas are Back in Style ~ This is my favourite. It has a catchy beat and by the end you believe "big fat mamas are back in style!" and are encouraged to "love your fat no matter where it's at."
3. Big Red Caboose ~ is about moving your caboose all over the place and having a fabulous ol' time doing it.
4. Fat Meat is Good Meat ~ A tongue-in-cheek, wiggle your toes, butt swinging good time.
5. My Funny Valentine ~ A slow classic but some of the high parts grate my nerves.
6. Roy's Blow ~ A cool 1.23 minute horn solo intermission. It's almost too short.
7. Meat on Their Bones ~ is another upbeat song but for the other side. She wants a man with meat on his bones.
8. Built for Comfort ~ Another absolute favourite of mine about the differences of body types
9. Use What You Got ~ A great shimmy about how perfect we all are. "It don't matter bout your size as long as you know how to use what ya got."
10. When You Wish Upon a Star ~ This has always been one of my favourite childhood songs but this rendition sounded out of tune or too falsetto for me.
Kristie and Roy are not alone in this collection. They are supported by some of Nashville's seasoned performers including the likes of George Tidwell, Steve Brewster, Jerry Kimbrough, Gary Lunn, and Jeff Coffin.
Rather than have the usual lyrics (although I would have liked them) printed on the inside flap, there is a glimpse into the background of each song and why it was chosen for the album. For instance, Big Fat Mamas, came from a fat bashing site. Talk about turning things around.
Overall, Use What You Got provides enough Jazz, blues, big band and funk sound to whet your appetite to this new sensation. It makes me want to see Kristie and Big Potential live. Despite my dislike of the ballads I think this is a must for any plus size woman's music with attitude collection. Go on and shake your caboose in style. Reviewed by M. E. Wood

Customer Reviews:
Review of Americans in London.......2006-03-09
The recording is excellent and replaces my old 78 recordings which I transferred to tape some years ago. But they have that horrible hissing noise which spoils my enjoyment of them.
It is to be observed that although the cast is American, the orchestras and conductors are British (except for Debroy Sommers). I know qite a bot about Deboy Sommers and Lew Stone, but can anyone fill me in about Reginald Burston?
The CD is great. Thank you to Amazon for this.
