Album Description
Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.

Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14
Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12
This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Album Description
Clarion is proud to showcase another great American choir, The Choral Project, in a program featuring the music of Eric Whitacre. Included are the ever-popular "Cloudburst" and the "Five Hebrew Love Songs" performed with String Quartet. Founded in 1996 by Artistic Director Daniel Hughes, The Choral Project has performed throughout Northern California in concert performances, interfaith services, and choral festivals, including a performance at the National Cathedral in Washington DC, as part of the California State Day Celebration Service. In June of 2001, The Choral Project received rave reviews and standing ovations at concert performances during their first international tour to Mexico and Costa Rica, which included highly acclaimed performances on Mexican National Radio, and a joint concert with the Café Chorale in Costa Rica. They have performed world premieres of compositions by numerous composers including Eric Whitacre.

Soloists Poor, Vibrato Out Of Control, Spend $ Elsewhere.......2006-04-25
Truly dissapointed with this one.
Of course, BYU's is better than this; the sopranos sound like they have an average age of 60.
The soprano section lives in some wierd dichotomy. During the "Agnus Dei" you get a particularly bad B-52 like vibrato, then during the 7/8 section of "5 Hebrew Songs" they sound like a mediocre State School College Choir with a breathy unsupported sound. Both instances weren't out of tune. They just lacked a firm foundation.
When the soloists in "Tonight Eternity Alone" come in with shocking vibrato and lack of professional musicality, I actually skipped ahead.
If you are looking for a great cd other than BYU's. Try the CD entitled "Cloudburst", sung by Polyphony, conducted by Stephen Layton on Hyperion Records. It will blow you away. Save your money on this one, unless you would like to use this CD to compare the differences between it and either BYU or Polyphony.
Paying a premium fee for this CD, I expected something a bit better than an average grade semi-professional choir.
Daniel, find some new sopranos if you want to continue to sell CD's for $17 a pop.
A fabulous CD!.......2006-03-24
I don't know what these people are talking about. I've heard the BYU cd and it leaves me cold. The tone is so pure and thin that it has no life to it. The Choral Project breathes life into these pieces by Eric Whitacre. Another winner is Frank Ticheli's "There Will Be Rest". Simply stunning. A fabulous CD!
Decent, but too much vibrato.......2006-02-03
I am a huge Eric Whitacre fan, so I am always excited about his recordings. So far the best recording of his Choral works is the BYU singers, which is far superior to this recording. My biggest complaint is that nearly every piece from Water and Light is filled with vibrato. I have read some internet postings by Mr. Whitacre himself and he has said that his pieces are best sung without vibrato because the harmonies are designed to fit tightly together. All the vibrato makes the pieces not sound completely in tune (I'm am not saying that these performers are not capable of singing in tune, just that the vibrato makes the harmonies not quite as strong)
Not bad...BYU is markedly superior........2006-01-29
As the previous reviewer, I'm a huge Eric Whitacre fan. If you're looking for a recording of his Five Hebrew Love Songs (which are stunningly beautiful), may I recommend "Beautiful River" by BYU Concert Choir (on Tantara Records). In comparing the two side by side...well there is no comparison.
Not BYU, but worth adding to your collection.......2006-01-17
Eric Whitacre has taken the contemporary choral music world by storm. Since the release of his collected a cappella works CD (recorded by BYU Singers/Ron Staheli), choral music fans cannot get enough of his music.
Being such a fan, I bought this CD on a whim. I was excited for the opportunity to hear recordings of several pieces not included on the BYU recording (Little Birds, She Weeps Over Rahoon, Five Hebrew Love Songs).
Whitacre's music is as aurally stunning as it is difficult to sing, and the Choral Project does an adequate job of re-interpreting these pieces. If you've gotten use to the excellent quality of the BYU recording, you may be disappointed by this album--the balance and blend of this choir leaves something to be desired at times (not to mention the overly-offensive vibrato from several of the sopranos).
Perhaps the best track on the album is the Ticheli (mostly known for his band/wind ensemble compositions) "There Will Be Rest". If you aren't familiar with this piece, it's worth buying the album just to hear this one...
All-in-all, it's worth buying this album as long as you don't set your expectations too high.

Interesting.......2006-11-17
I bought the cd for a song for the Choir that I am in, I listened and it was not Dottie's best. I enjoyed it anyway because I am a fan of gospel music.
Churchy, Churchy, Churchy.......2004-05-22
This CD is GREAT. It is pretty traditional, but it directs your spirit to God. My favorites are: "He'll Give You Everything", "Praise Him", "The Water I Give", "Thank You","till Running", and many more. I'm only 16 years old, and I love it.

This is the voice of Free Men...........2001-11-03
I've had most of these songs on vinyl and they provide me with many wonderful memories. Paul Robeson had an unusual voice: a bass with baritone colorations, huge and powerful, with what can best be described as a mellow urgency. If that description confuses, then you'll just have to get this album and hear for yourself what I mean.
Robeson championed the cause of the working man through his music. Joe Hill is one of my favorites, in which Paul sinks down to the vocal depths with an astounding ease. The Song of the Plains is a rouser, and, if I remember correctly, it's sung in two languages. The Ballad For Americans is here, and it's a classic... and, for me, it's the very definition of America and the great spirit and soul of its people and its greatness. By and By is one of my favorite spirituals, and this is the version I remember. Who sang spirituals with as much richness and depth of feeling as Paul Robeson? Maybe Marian Anderson, whose voice was unique and whose life broke through so many barriers.
This is an album for those who love freedom and the many races who seek it. God bless Paul Robeson for his incredible contribution to humanity.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-10-29
Truly the value of a 'work' must be its ability to resist the passage of time. Although it is impossible to give even approximate dates to the songs Alfred Deller has assembled for this record, we do know that they are all very old! The references to knights in armour, hinds, the importance of nature, the sun and small birds, a simple tailor or weaver, the simplicity and artlessness of the love stories all permit us to place them between the 13th and 17th centuries. In England attempts to collect the largest possible number of folk songs has been going on for years. Composers of the Golden Age of English music made frequent use of popular music and Alfred Deller, himself, discovered "The Three Ravens" and "The Oak and the Ash". In the quest for new musical experiences, it is good to know that a source of popular music existed in England to enrich the experience of serious composers. One has to mention here that Alfred Deller also paved the way for a generation of countertenors; he 'broke the ice' so to speak for their inclusion in the musical world as a separate performing entity; not just an added part in choral music. He, along with his son Mark, have put together a truly charming and interesting recording. The voices are very much alike and I find it somewhat difficult to separate them, except of course, when they are soloing. The singing is skillful and musically correct; and the diction is flawless. While Deller's voice is not MY favoite countertenor voice; it is deep, strong and somewhat "hooty". James Bowman sings in much the same manner. I prefer the more resonant, full and ethereal voice as in Michael Chance and Derek Ragin. But Deller and Bowman have a large contingent of fans who would not agree with me. But this disc is so pleasant to listen to , that vocal preference is not that important. So if you like a good collection of interesting songs sung very well, this is it!!!!!
