One good song........2007-02-21
I bought this because I loved the song, "Gloria". The rest of the CD is so blah! A waste of money.
The Best Christmas Album Out There.......2007-02-07
As a "Smitty" fan, I'm naturally going to like just about every CD he produces, but even I was blown away by Christmas Collection. It's a wonderful mix of modern and traditional sacred Christmas music, and by the latter I do not mean the usual "Silent Night", "O Holy Night", etc., but music from the classical and liturgical realms. This often goes unheard during the Christmas season, but Smitty corrects this shameful omission, and the result is both uplifting and wondrous. Smith doesn't hog all the vocals, either; he lets the dramatic beauty of the music shine through. Some selections are entirely instrumental, in others his voice takes second place, merely augmenting this incredible music. His vocals are haunting and very nearly sublime; in the more modern selections, spirited and joyous. This is one mesmerizing, essential Christmas album!
Christmas Collection by Michael W. Smith.......2007-01-18
This 2 CD set includes the CD "Christmas"(1989)and "Christmastime" (1998). I loved the music, however was surprised that the CD's were old. I thought this was a new release when I purchased it.
Absolute Christmas time favorite!.......2007-01-13
This was my best Christmas present to myself. Loved the music and will listen to it beyond the holiday season. What a wonderful treat!

Veteran Christian band Newsong decided to include the sentimental ballad, "Christmas Shoes," as a bonus track on 2000's Sheltering Tree, unaware that the almost O. Henry-esque tale about a young boy attempting to buy a pair of shoes as a Christmas present for his dying mother would blow up into a massive hit. So overwhelming was the response to that song (it landed atop Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart) that the group decided to fashion an entire holiday album around it, naturally titling it Christmas Shoes. In addition to the heart-wrenching title track, the contemporary Christian rockers serve up some beautifully arranged versions of cherished favorites such as "Away in the Manger/God Rest Ye, Merry Gentleman," "The First Noel," and "What Child Is This," as well as an impish, rather histrionic version of "You're a Mean One, Mr.Grinch" which should tickle the underage set. Newsong have also written a number of well-crafted, infectious holiday songs that don't bludgeon you with heavy-handed inspirational messages, but instead shine brightly with the true spirit of the holiday. --Jaan Uhelszki

christmas Shoes.......2007-01-09
This CD is wonderful and my family loved it. It is a great cd to add to my Christmas Collection.
I wish there was an option for No stars.......2006-12-26
I think the people that hate this song have realized that this is just a feeble attempt to tug at the heart strings of people during the holiday season. The song is so poorly constructed and over emotional it may make many people that the song is a joke of some sort. This is what is truly sad because this is a serious song.
It sounds to me like a bunch of people sat around in a room and said, "lets write a really depressing Christmas song". Lets see why do we need? How about a dieing mother? Great! Lets make her die on Christmas eve! Awesome. We need something else. How about a dirty poor kid who is trying to buy her a present. Fantastic! This is going to be a great song.
If you are touched by this song, well I guess you are looking past the composers obvious attempt to create emotion out of issues that are serious but when you combine so many of them into one song, it becomes nothing more than sap.
I think most of us realize that there are many people who are poor and sick in this world and that the things many of take for granted are serious concerns for many. No song should have to remind us of that. Be thankful for what you have and be mindful of those who don't have.
PERSPECTIVES.......2006-12-19
I believe those that have "dissed" this recording, and particularly the title song, have failed to understand it fully. At no point does it suggest Jesus is concerned about footwear; the song simply reflects a young child's perspective and his love for his mother.
Also, I find the assertion of this song being "schmaltzy" or deliberately gut wrenching to be curious. Consider "Gift of the Magi", Little Drummer Boy, Dickens "A Christmas Carol". Consider the true story of the Passion and Resurrection of Christ. Do these not touch the heart?
Christmas Shoes Song - A Story of Hope, Love and Life.......2006-11-28
There seems to be more cynics at Christmas than any other holiday. They take the songs and hope of the Christmas season and try to degrade it into something that is cheap and dirty. The "Christmas Shoes" is about hope, love and life. That is what this season is about, not about the world degrading the hope of people. Yes the song is sad, but it also about what love can do. Many Christmas songs are like this song, speaking not only of sadness and loss, but also of the hope of the world to see a better year ahead. That is what the Christmas Season is - hope for us all and a sense of love for others.
As for this song being just a Christian song, many people have not listened to the song closely. The song does not mention Christian tenets. It does mention Jesus and God, but as sense of hope for the Characters of the song. The song was not meant to beat anyone over the head.
Listen to the "Christmas Shoes" and other songs on the album for the beauty of the music and the hope that the world can be beautiful, even when life is not always happy or as great as our expectations. The music will lift your spirits if you let it.

Christmastime, the 1998 holiday release on which Michael W. Smith plays chemist and combines elements not previously forged together, is a study in contrast. His inclusion of three medleys of classic holiday tunes works more than it doesn't. But the addition of Christmas show tunes like "The Happiest Christmas," Kay Thompson's "Jingle Bells," and "Christmas Waltz" makes little sense. One has to be a crooner to pull these off and Smitty is many things but a crooner. The release's finest moments come in more contemporary style with the Chris Rice-penned "Welcome to Our World," Smitty's title track, and the Phil Keaggy-enriched instrumental "O Christmas Tree." Of the medleys, "Sing We Now of Christmas/O Come O Come Emmanuel " showcases Smitty's sensible arrangements as well as his now-famous "Emmanuel" chorus. --Michael Lyttle
Customer Reviews:
My favorite Christmas CD.......2007-01-16
I have actually bought two of these, one for the house and one for my car. I love the original "Christmastime" and even my music savvy 20 year old who loves Keane, Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie, The Fray, etc., deemed "Christmastime" her favorite Christmas song this year. If you want to add to your Christmas music collection with something different than choirs or acoustic guitar ... this is the CD to buy!
Christmastime.......2007-01-09
Michael Smith is a terrific musician and I enjoyed this album very much. It had some variations of old familiar Carols as well as a few new ones that I also enjoyed immensely.
Press play , decorate tree........a modern classic.......2006-10-18
Michael has two Christmas cd's out now, and I wish he would do another. I have called his first one a masterpiece, this cd does'nt disappoint. This release and his "Christmas" are the two cd's that get heavy playing time at my house. In the past year I have sampled and or purchased more Christmas music than in the last 15 years. I have heard some really good music but for the season His music has not been topped. These two cd's are what I would consider a modern classic or masterpieces! If you do not have both his Christmas cd's your Christmas is not complete. He has clearly captured the spirit of the season, MWS has done it again!!
excellent CD.......2005-11-14
This is a great CD! I have had it for awhile now and love to listen to it every Christmas. It has a lot of upbeat songs as well as some traditional ones. It's a fun holiday CD and I would recommend it to everyone!
Christmas Worship Experience.......2004-11-16
I first listened to this CD in November 1998. I went to Texas to go with my parents to the doctor. The diagnosis: multiple myeloma, incurable cancer for my mother. After spending a few days with them, I listened to this CD all of the way home, a 400 mile trip. I prayed & worshipped all the way while God used the beautiful music of Michael W. Smith's Christmastime to guide me safely home. I still listen to the CD and it is truly a beautiful CD that can be a worship experience for an open heart.

review of michael smith christmas album.......2007-01-17
this was the first michael smith album that I purchased. I bought it because of the song Gloria that I heard playing on the radio.....it is an OK album with Gloria being the best song on the album....I thought there would be more singing of more traditional songs.....I need something to warm up my voice to before going to mass to cantor and this isnt quite what I need.....I probably would buy more of his albums if I heard a particular song on the radio that I liked.
Smitty's Christmas Album.......2006-11-30
Without a doubt - this album is the best I have ever listened to. It's Christmas - but I listen to it throughout the year. I still purchase this CD for gifts - and the receivers rave about it. It lifts you into a realm of worship and awe. No other Christmas album has come close to this masterpiece. Thank you Smitty!
#1 Christmas cd ever made ...a masterpiece.......2006-03-24
I've listned to alot Christmas music this year, this cd is still one the finest Christmas albums ever made. This cd is unique as it blends many different genres of music. Hauntingly beautiful with the rich orchestrations from Ronn Huff. The best Christmas music you will ever hear, so beautifuly arranged, it is at the heart of Christmas. This cd creates the perfect atmosphere to enjoy the Christmas season. It's one of the most magical, majestic, and utterly grand Christmas album ever produced. I've been on a buying spree of Christmas music and this cd is still my favorite. I can't say enough good things about this cd. Please!! make this in DVD-A format!!
All Time Favorite Christmas CD.......2005-11-26
This album may be 12 years old, but it is without question, my all time favorite when it comes to Christmas CDs. What first impressed me about it, is that it's not all the same songs you hear on everybody else's Christmas albums. These songs are so unique, so beautifuly arranged, and classic Michael W. Smith! I saw Smitty in concert tonight with the Nashville Symphony and was reminded once again, what a gifted, incredible musician he is! He played several songs from this CD backed by the full orchestra along with his own band - AWESOME! I love this CD so much, I play it year round and never tire of it. A must have for any Christmas CD library!
Still the best.......2005-11-18
I've had this album for a very long time. Smitty shares the microphone with different choirs - and a full orchestra. The sound is fantastic - and you find yourself getting drawn into the music.
I lent my cd to some friends - and after two years had to wrestle it out of their hands.
This IS a Christmas album that you will want to included in your collection.

You know this winter "reunion" is going to be a good one when Hawaiian slack-key guitar great Keola Beamer opens it with a stunning original, "Keiki's Dream." Reassembling the artists who defined the Windham Hill sound, Reunion features pianist Liz Story arranging the Spanish traditional "Babe Is Born" for solo piano, Windham vet Alex DeGrassi bringing his graceful acoustic guitar work to bear on "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," and capo William Ackermann rolling out his trademark steel-string arpeggios on a pensive, minor-key original, "Impending Death of the Virgin Spirit." The man who put Windham Hill on the map, pianist George Winston, contributes a lovely reading of Alfred Burt's "What Are the Signs," and fretless bass wonder Michael Manring tickles the ivories as well as bass on a circumspect "Year's End." More about the symbolism of the winter season than the joy of Christmas, Reunion is classic Windham Hill, meditative and a bit melancholy. Also features Mike Marshall, Ben Verdery, Paul McCandless, and others. --James Rotondi
Customer Reviews:
Review of "A Winter Solstice Reunion".......2007-02-06
Having not heard the "Soltice"s' in years, my husband loved this CD.
A very typical "Winter Solstice" selection.......2006-12-31
This is very much in the genre of the "Winter Solstice" series. It is still very enjoyable, however, if you long for a more meditative offering. Perfect Holiday music choice.
SUPERB, and ALMOST the best of the series.......2006-02-21
Probably 4.5 stars; A SUPERB release, and an attempt to get back to as many of the original groundbreaking artists which made the Winter's Solstice series so endearing. Highlights: As ALWAYS, I look forward most to Ackerman and especially, Barbara Higbee's contributions to any of the Winter's Solstice CDs. Higbee in particular, always has the most surprising arrangments or original compositions, and this release is a perfect example. "Snowfall Lullaby" is one of the most touching lullaby melodies. (though it is by no means sleepy; simply comforting in a sort of "neo-celtic" way). There are Harps, violin & piano; you simply must hear it to know how fine it is, and to experience what I'm trying to describe in words. Ackermann normally tries to write something original, or which is not a traditionally well-known Christmas song, which was the overall attempt in the groundbreaking first two Winter's Solstice releases. Here he does a pensive remake of one of his classics "Impending Death Of The Virgin Spirit". Perhaps one might see it as a deep-reflection on Mary's depth of charcter and her impending suffering which will one day lead to the loss of her child. Darol Anger's "I saw Three Ships" is an quite original, if more familiar melody. It's an arrangement that is peaceful & lilting & not the usual "jig" we hear so often. There are so many others: "What are the Signs" by Winston is a perfect "10", "Year's End" by Manring, Paul McCandless's "20 Degrees Below" and Liz Story's "Babe Is Born/Enter The Stable Gently". While there are a couple uneven spots, by some less familiar artists, this is one of the essential releases of the series. My final recommendation is to buy the SECOND Winter's Solstice release first, which to me, has always been the pinnacle of originality & creative spirit, even exceeding the fine first release, and then also buy this release to see how original these collections can be, before venturing into some of the later ones, most of which are good, but which often feature traditional Christmas melodies rather than the more obscure carols & original compositions featured here. Overall, nearly a perfect release!
Deceptive Title.......2004-12-29
I have been a fan of the Windham Hill label for many years...almost since its beginning. I prefer some collections to others, but,the Winter's Solstice series continues as a favorite. For sentimental reasons, I've always been fond of the original realase in the set and when I saw this one I thought that perhaps through some miracle or some heavy lifting on the label's part, it would be comprised of new pieces from the artists on AWS. But after a quick look I have to ask, In what way is this a "reunion?" OK, Liz Story and label founder Will Ackerman are present, but where's the rest of the class? Granted, one would be hard pressed to hear new material from Shadowfax, whose offering for AWS came from their work while on another label(pre-WH), but certainly others beside Story and Ackerman survive to this day. Not to worry, the material that is here is enjoyable as always, but, if you were nostalgic for the artists of the first release, a reunion this is not.
So good.......2002-03-22
This is the best of the Winter solstice albums. I'm not one for a real new age sound. I like classic, celtic, instruments. This CD shines... contemporary with olde sounds. The second track is by far the best track to me.. it has a holiday flavor, but I don't just listen to this during the holidays. In fact, all of the Solstice albums are like this really. Its not Christmassy.. its beautiful, serene, music. My other favorites are I, II, and VI.

IT'S THE CHRISTMAS REUNION OF THE YEAR!
One of the 70's most beloved and best selling pop groups are back with an all-new recording - their first in 28 years. Surprisingly having never recorded a Christmas record back when they were topping the Billboard charts, this CD has been a longtime coming for the millions of record buyers who loved this group. Featuring the warm and instantly recognizable voice of Tony Orlando - and the unforgettable backing vocal sound of Dawn (Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent,) this brand-new holiday offering is like a homecoming of dear friends. Tony Orlando & Dawn's "A Christmas Reunion" is destined to be a holiday classic for years to come. Their wonderful version of "The Christmas Song" features lead vocals by Tony, Telma & Joyce - a first for the group. Original tunes include "Christmas in New York," which is a solid-gold holiday smash
and bound to become a seasonal anthem for the Big Apple. The world-beat arrangement of "Mary's Boy Child" is a wonderful new twist on this holiday favorite. Familiar voices loved by millions for over three decades, Tony Orlando & Dawn have definitely entered fresh musical territory with their latest effort. A Christmas collection so stunning, you won't believe your ears!
Produced by Grammy Award winner Michael Omartian, whose credits include Amy Grant, Donna Summer, Peter Cetera, Christopher Cross, Rod Stewart, Cher, Whitney Houston and many more.

Who knew this was out there?.......2007-01-21
We hadn't even thought about Tony Orlando and Dawn for... how long? Imagine our surprise when driving around looking at Christmas lights we hear this great Christmas song on the radio. As we wait in suspense hoping the announcer will say who it was, he does. Tony Orlando and Dawn? You've GOT to be kidding! When was this from? We search it out on the computer and find a copy (really cheap) from an Amazon seller, who gets it to us right before Christmas. Who knew that TO&D had reunited recently to do this album? Why doesn't it get more airplay? Why weren't we told! It is a beautiful album, filled with meaningful, spiritual Christmas songs. These songs are beautifuly written and arranged. It goes back to the real Reason for the Season. All three artists have solo songs, and every one is a gem. This will be a Christmas tradition from now on.
A Christmas Reunion well worth waiting for!.......2005-12-19
Many folks, especially babyboomers such as myself, best remember Tony Orlando and Dawn from their string of early-70's hits such as "Candida," "Knock Three Times," and "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree," and for their variety show which aired from 1973 to 1977. Now, after a hiatus of 28 years, the three group members, Tony Orlando, Joyce Vincent and Telma Hopkins, have again joined forces in the recording studio to put together a wonderful new collection of holiday tunes, their first. Tony Orlando and Dawn's 'A Christmas Reunion' features tracks sung by all three, either separately or together, as on the first track, the lovely Christmas classic "The Christmas Song" (aka "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire").
Tony Orlando and Dawn's 'A Christmas Reunion' is a mix of both old and new, but don't look for Rudolph or Frosty here. Instead, settle back with your cup of eggnog, put your feet up, and prepare yourself to be treated to a CD that clearly acknowledges the Reason for the Season - as with "Mary's Boy Child," brilliantly executed by Tony Orlando with an African-influenced arrangement; "Ave Maria/O Holy Night," featuring lead vocal by Joyce Vincent and Tony Orlando, respectively; and the haunting and thought-provoking "Mary Did You Know." The more secular offerings are enjoyable to listen to as well, and perhaps to sing along with, thanks to the included lyric sheet - Ray Parker, Jr.'s "Christmas Time is Here," with lead vocal by Telma Hopkins; the jazzy "Christmas in New York," composed by legendary New York songwriters Jack Keller and Bob Feldman; and my personal favorite, the bluesy "I Lose It When I Hear White Christmas," penned by Toni Wine and Artie Wayne, another pair of talented New York scribes; this Wine/Wayne collaboration is a sure-fire Christmas classic in the making. (By the way, that's Toni's voice you hear singing "I'm gonna make your life so sweet" on The Archies' 1969 megahit "Sugar, Sugar," and about a year after "Sugar" had its run on the charts, Toni co-wrote a little ditty called "Candida," which was recorded by a session singer named Tony Orlando and released under the name of Dawn and ... well, you probably know the rest.)
All in all, this 14-track holiday offering is a delight, and 'A Christmas Reunion' by Tony, Telma and Joyce really brings forth the spirit of Christmas. Highly recommended!
Awesome Christmas CD.......2005-12-01
Tony Orlando and Dawn have always had a magic to their music. This Cd tops them all, getting back to their true roots - soul, r and b and even a light jazz sound. I think all of their voices shine in this cd. Although I am a Tony Orlando and Dawn fan, my husband is not. After hearing this cd, my husband is telling people they should buy this cd. He is so impressed with it!!I think that pretty much tells it all. LOL My personel favorites are Light of the Stable, mary Did you Know, Welcome to Our World, and Saviors Day. Tony's voice really shines even more than usual in Mary Did you Know. And the girls are even more awesome than usual on Welcome to Our World. The neat thing about this cd is, it will keep selling year after year!!

Beautiful Memories That Will Warm Your Heart.......2005-11-22
I have been waiting 28 years for a new Tony Orlando and Dawn album - now CD - to come out. Finally my prayers were answered. I couldn't be more happy that the first new album by Tony and the girls is a Christmas album as Christmas is a very special time for me. My anticipation was overwhelming me and finally the time came for the CD to come out. It felt great going into my local music store and looking at the new releases and seeing Tony Orlando and Dawn Christmas Reunion looking right at me. The album cover is beautiful and the enclosed photos are great and reminicent of old ones. Just seeing that made me realize that I was in for something special. The CD was better than I could ever hope for. The CD happens to start with my favorite Christmas song, The Christmas Song, then goes into Christmas in New York which I predict to be a huge hit especially here in NY. What a perfect song for Tony Orlando's voice. I also really love the solo songs the girls sing, again reminding me of the old albums. Tony's version of Silent Night gives a Ray Charles flavor which is just so powerful - Tony and the Girls actually give me chills listening to this song. I also love Mistletoe and Wine, Mary's Boy Child, I Lose It When I Hear White Christmas...Oh the whole CD is just great! Please trust me when I say you will not be disappointed. Your collection needs this new CD. It will put a smile on your face and a warm feeling in your heart. Merry Christmas Tony Orlando and Dawn and thank you.

Excellent musicianship crafts an emotionallly uplifting CD!.......2007-03-20
I received this CD as a gift several years ago, and it has become one of my favorites. I love the traditional Christmas songs that were on the radio growing up (Dino, Bing, Perry Como, Nat King Cole, etc.), but after many hours of that, this brings a very pleasant change. The music is all instrumental, upbeat, and classy (it doesn't sound like a bad hoe-down at the local barndance).
While the instruments are traditional "mountain" strings, the arrangements overlay extremely well, and build upon one another in such a fashion that even makes "Jingle Bells" exciting and novel, and there isn't a misfire on the entire collection.
I came on here hoping that Cumberland Gap Reunion did a second volume when I saw this at under $6 and could not believe it. This is not generic tripe or a throw away recording and could legitimately sell for over $15 -- it is just not well known. I have purchased it for several family members with different tastes, and they all love it. Simply put, it is a holiday must in our home now. Unfortunately, no second volume is out as of yet, but I am still hoping...
Long time favorite.......2007-01-23
I have enjoyed this christmas music for years. I had the tape and was so happy to find it on DVD too. Heartwarming, toe tapping, not your usual holiday listening.
Delightful Dulcimer Renditions of Christmas Tunes.......2005-12-05
The cover might make you think it's just one more generic Christmas album with a folksy spin. Take a listen and you will hear genuine acoustic and very pleasant-to-the-ear versions of your favorite Christmas songs.
Here's the scoop on the group from CDBaby: "Cumberland Gap began taking shape in 1998 with Greg Silsby (vocals, guitar) and Aaron Muskopf (vocals, bass). Kevin Liley (vocals, banjo, mandolin, fiddle) joined the group in 2000 with the departure of guitarist Dave Anderson.
Since the beginning Cumberland Gap has stayed true to its roots. Their acoustic renditions of classic American music and their inspired list of original songs have gained a steadily growing enthusiastic audience."
