The loving memory most frequently conjured here is Led Zep's "When the Levee Breaks." That unparalleled mix of Delta blues, multi-tracked acoustic/electric guitar invention, and thunderous Bonham stomp is all over "The Oaf," a towering single that provides an instant entree to rock radio for the made-in-Canada, based-in-Boston quartet. There's not a weak track to be heard on an album loaded with standouts like "Blown Wide Open," "How Would You Know," and likely second single "That Song." --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Most Prophetic lyric of all time.......2007-05-23

"My luck is wasted. I'm on the run somewhere" is one of, if not the, most prophetic line in any song. It is brilliant in it's symplicity.

Obviously 4 songs are far and away better than the rest of the album (The Oaf, That Song, Blown Wide Open and Under the Lighthouse), but that's not to asy that rest is not good, it is, but I would pay full fare for just those 4 songs.

5 out of 5 stars SIMPLY ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS OF THE 90'S.......2006-08-11

If you don't own this album, buy it, it will be in rotation for years..Ian's song's still resonate till this day.

One of the best Rock albums ever.

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia Central.......2006-02-22

This album contains at least two of my favourite songs ever which would be That Song and Blown Wide Open. I would also say The Oaf could be included with them or very close to it. They are among my favourite songs for nostalgia purposes especially. There is probably only one song that makes me more nostalgic than those three and that would be my favourite song of all time.

This album is criminally underrated and it and Big Wreck should have been right there with Soundgarden and their albums in terms of popularity. Actually I'd say higher in some cases. However, for me anyway, the rest of the album as a whole doesn't hold up like those three. And I think that's just because those three songs are so extraordinarily good to me that it would be highly unlikely for each or any of the other songs on the album to be anywhere near them. So I guess that's not a bad thing. There are still some other serious standouts like Look What I Found, Under The Lighthouse (can't forget this one), Between You And I and Overemphasizing (also most notably can't forget this one).

In the end, the album is very well put together and is a phenomenal piece of work. Very few songs make me feel the same way as some of these do. They're so powerful. A record to not be missed. If you like Led Zeppelin and/or Soundgarden, I am thinking you'd be glad if you got a hold of this.

One of the best albums to ever come out of Canada. Period.

5 out of 5 stars Farewell old friends... A season ends........2005-12-12

The fact that I bought the album after hearing That Song just once on the radio two years ago (about six years after its release in 1997) and still love every word of it today is perhaps a testament to how good it must be and how popular Big Wreck still is.

It is without a doubt my favourite CD - no question, no competition. When asked who my favourite band is, I don't hesitate to say Big Wreck; I don't even have to think about it. There is not a single song involving Ian Thornley that I have not liked, and that includes the music from his new band Thornley. This album, however, shines just a little brighter than the others. To me, it's a varied musical landscape. It has a little bit of everything mixed in to give it that special flair that, in my opinion, puts it at a level above... well, pretty much everything else, but at the same time it's not so "great" that it becomes untouchable.

With a solid, infectious sound and strangely moving vocals, this is music for the music lovers: those who want to either sing along to something outstanding or tune out the world for a while and just be whatever feels good. Each song takes you to a different place, and it's easy to just get lost in the sound - it tends to sweep you away without your even noticing. Having heard it so many times and memorizing all the small details, I often drift off in daydreams when I listen to it, and I'm always surprised to come back to reality at the end of Overemphasizing and realize that I just did nothing but breathe and listen for a little over an hour. Whether it gets you dancing, whistling, or just sitting around staring at nothing, this music affects you. Those who aren't looking for anything too complex or difficult to sink into, but who also want more substance than your average canned rock: you've come to the perfect place.

I've read a few reviews by people who say they weren't automatic fans, but to give the music a chance anyway. They couldn't be more right. Not every Big Wreck or Thornley song was a favourite of mine straight away; this was especially true of The Pleasure And The Greed album. I didn't immediately love In Loving Memory Of... as a whole, but something hooked me and kept me coming back, and the songs grew on me the more I listened to them. They never seem to get old - only better.

Big Wreck has split up, but I'm strangely not as heartbroken as I could be. Ian Thornley has gone on with his new band Thornley, which is also a favourite of mine, and I know there will be even more to come of his grungy, passionate singing. Whether he's bellowing or whispering, he has a range and vocal quality that makes me wish I had taken lessons as a kid so I could sing along without sounding like a moron in comparison. It was the voice of Big Wreck that drew me to them in the first place, and for me there's just no substitute, so I have no other choice but to follow along and hear what else he creates. This is an epic album though, and no matter what he does with the rest of his career (which will undoubtedly be great anyway), the sound of Ian's voice alone will always keep me coming back to listen to Big Wreck.

To sum up: In Loving Memory Of... is the single best musical purchase I've ever made. If it doesn't grab you by the hair and shake you, even a little bit, then you just weren't listening.

5 out of 5 stars awesome band...sorry they're gone.......2005-12-02

I discovered this band via the release of "The Oaf" on MTV, then downloaded a few tracks to check the rest out. Ironically, I had "That Song" stuck in my head for about 6 months, and the rest of the album nearly acheives that ideal. This is one of my favorite albums ever. The followup "The Pleasure and the Greed" is just as good.

If you listen to any Big Wreck (or Thornley) and you don't like it, or it's just okay, give it a chance. Both myself and several friends felt the same way, and man, it grows on you until you are totally into it.

4 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS CD.......2006-05-18

I've liked Johnny Guitar Watson ever since "Real Mother For Ya". I love his play on words, and funny sayings and his voice is very unique. He can really play the blues. "Superman Lover" is such a good song, it's featured as a character's theme song in the movie "Roll Bounce". I wish a few other songs were included, but as far as an introduction to JGW, this is the CD to get.

5 out of 5 stars Grand Master of Funk.......2005-07-05

The only man to really hit Funk right on the head, he owned it! Whenever I put him on in my car people who have never listened to him before enjoy him right away, his music was always pure enjoyment, the lyrics just made you smile so much.

First listened to him in 1979 in Berlin, and if I feel a bit low then he lifts me all the way up to the top, there was or is no one cooler than the great guitar man.

Regret never seeing him live on stage, he never seemed to get the recognition he deserved, is there anyone out there that is close to this man, I think not?

4 out of 5 stars Johnny's the Man!.......2005-06-15

This is a good starting anthology of JGW. My only regret is that "The Real Deal" is inexplicably missing from it. That is a scat MASTERPIECE. Another thing the above viewer pointed out, is JGW's use of humor in his compositions. I mean, I just CRY when I hear Johnny vamp at the end of "Real Mother For Ya": "Gimme some of that low lead, I ain't gonna fool with nuthin' else! I gotta STOP buying TWO hot dogs and a strawberry soda!" I ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOLL! Every time. I LOVE this man, miss him. I discovered him too late to see him in concert, and that is my greatest regret of all. I play him almost every day. I smile when I hear his voice, his licks, his "Listen"'s between verses. This man IS a giant...right up there...with ANYONE you'd care to name. Johnny "Guitar"? YOU ARE THE FREAKIN' MAAAAAAAAAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Everlasting.......2004-02-27

In need of uplifting vibes? Watson is like a fine wine: "it gets better as it gets older" (George Clinton). Listen - and adjust.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2003-08-15

In an interview during the eighties Eric Clapton was asked whether he could name "his favourite guitar player". Johnny Guitar Watson was his answer. Nuff said...

If you ever feel abandoned, lost or confused, listen to Gladys Knight performing the swedish hymn How Great Thou Art. Being from Sweden I have listened to numerous interpretations but this one surpasses earthly realms and leaves you emotionally reborn. The album is an absolute must for anyone interested in sacred songs performed by some of the most outstanding singers ever.

5 out of 5 stars Get It Form Marvin Gaye's "His Eye Is On The Sparrow".......2001-06-22

"His Eye Is On The Sparrow" is one of my favorive hymns, and no one does it better than Marvin Gaye does on this CD. That and "How Great Thou Art" by Gladys Knight & The Pips are the reasons I give this CD 5 stars. They both do spine-tingling versions of these gospel classics.

5 out of 5 stars Wildly Worth It, If Only for Two Jewels.......2000-12-19

Marvin Gaye's "His Eye is On the Sparrow," is a masterpiece. I can't help but think that he wasn't just doing a recording, but pouring out his fragmenting, deteriorating inner life to the Lord, a cry to heaven for salvation that pentrates the soul. Gladys Knight's, "Just a Closer Walk" is the other exquisite gem. If only for these two, this CD of rare tracks is an absolute must. The other songs are rather pedestrian, but the two jewels alone give this 5 Stars. However, Gladys' "How Great Thou Art" and Smokey's "Rock of Ages" are also heartfelt and lovely, indeed.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute blessing.......1999-06-10

This CD is an absolute blessing it takes you to another place especially "His eye is on the Sparrow" by Marvin Gaye it sends chills up my spine and also Paul Williams singing "The Lord's Prayer",and Gladys Knight singing "How Great Thou Art" will bring tears to your eyes. If you are a Motown and Gospel fan you will cherish this.

5 out of 5 stars This album rocks........1999-02-15

Marvin Gaye's "His Eye is on the Sparrow" and Stevie Wonder's "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" lead an incredible ensemble of gospel greats. The Motown style is a gift for all gospel music enthusiasts.

5 out of 5 stars 3rd album, different........2002-07-09

The first time i listened to this album i was mildly dissapointed at how different it was from the first two, mainly due to the lack of reggae and ska influence present in those two albums, its more hard-edge punk rock, more driving basslines and in your face lyrics courtesy of the talented noodle. I've grown to love it and its earned its spot in my CD rotation. If you want the full daycare swindlers experience, get to a show, the band has incredible stage energy and the fan participation is always high.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Late Renaissance English Vocals........2006-11-05

'In Loving Memory', a collection of 'Psalms, Songs, and Elegies' by William Lawes', performed by 'The Consort of Musicke' headed by director, Anthony Rooley was a real discovery. It even posed an interesting puzzle in making sense of the 'Civil War' cannon ball on the cover. I had to think twice to realize it did not refer to the American war between the states, but to the English civil war between Cromwell's puritans and the royalists.

What stands out most about this music is that music for the solo voice is so uncommon in this age. The Lied / Chansom / Art Song didn't really come into its own until the early 19th century, and here we are in the 17th century. While we do have lute and organ accompaniests, the music is almost pure voice. The only problem I have with the recording is that like so many other 'early' music recordings, it sounds like it was done in a cathedral and not in a drawing room, where it belongs. I'm also just a bit annoyed that the notes don't tell us who is singing what. While I am a big fan of Emma Kirkby, I can't easily distinguish her voice from the other soprano, Evelyn Tubb without many repetitions. Fortunately, these English songs warrent frequent re-listening.

5 out of 5 stars This is your greatest hits CD, Johnny G was a master.......2004-09-30

Ignore all the compilations and "Best of Johnny's", because Ganster of Love and 3 Hours Past Midnight are your definitive recordings. Oh, my, this man smoked 'em out of the hall every time he picked up a guitar. You can hear Johnny's licks in most rock and blues played after this, but he played with style. I'm not a big fan of the 70's funk scene that he took part in, but his blues and rock & roll are all-time hits. It's right here. And get 3 Hours Past Midnight, another top-ten all-time rockin' & rollin' blues recording you'll wonder how you lived without. These two Cds never find their way back to the shelf in my house.

      5 out of 5 stars the best.......2003-12-19

I grew up on the nothwest side of chicago listening to all the mixes on friday and saturday nights and we indeed lost a great artist when Kool Rock Steady passed away, I had the great pleasure of meeting Mr. Rudolph in 1994 at a party I was dj'ing at . Bad boy bill does him justice in this mega-mix.

      5 out of 5 stars The Greatest.......2003-09-19

Kool Rock Steady was indeed one of Chi-Towns greatest and will always be remembered for all of the famous Hip-House style he invented with Fast Eddie and Tyree Cooper. I never personally met the man but I know that he is in a greater place than here on Earth thats for sure. Well for all the people that have never heard of KRS look him up, he's 1 of the Best the will ever be. Peace Out and God Bless all the artist with the same attitude towards life as KRS!
