Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not great.......2007-03-29

I can't give it less than 3 stars because I love the musical. However, this recording is less than spectacular. It sounds like it was recorded by some guy in the audience with a mono tape recorder. I was disappointed in the leads, also. They're trying to hard to sound like rock stars, which makes them sound rather cheesy. There are good moments, but if you're new to "Chess," go with the original concept album. You can't beat Elaine Paige and Murray Head.

5 out of 5 stars Mate in Sweden!.......2007-02-07

Cold War Chess Championships came and went with the demise of the Soviet Union, as did the staging of Chess The Musical. This is to be regretted since musically and lyrically it is by far the best work from Abba duo Andersson and Ulvaeus, aided amply by Tim Rice. Oddly relatively unknown in Scandinavian, this concert performance, now well over ten years old, helped bridge the gap. It also managed to bring to the attention of producers that concert productions of this piece are perhaps the best way of bringing Chess to life in the post Cold War climate of the twenty-first century, and in particular relegating the old East West rivalry to the wings while focusing on the relationships-especially that of Florence and the Russian. Indeed they get all the best songs with the climatic finale You and I (reprise) making the hairs stand on the back of ones neck. The performance throughout are accomplished and enthusiastic, and the live performance and crowd responses add to the drama unfolding 'on stage'. One can only hope that Chess will remain in the consciousness of audiences and actors, producers and directors, as this CD is a perfect advertisement for a night of Chess at the theatre or concert hall

3 out of 5 stars Not that good.......2006-04-05

Contains the extra songs not found in the "studio release" (with Ms. Paige etc.). However, the quality is poor and even the artists are no match to the ones in the studio recording. However, a must for Chess-aficionados.

4 out of 5 stars An ok album........2003-07-02

I now own all the five major (legal) recordings of Chess; Original Concept, Broadway Cast, In Concert, "Danish" Complete Cast and Swedish cast.

All of these have their strenght and weaknesses, but as for completeness, one have to go for the Swedish or Danish recordings. As it is, I dislike the Swedish one, and the Danish is hard to get. That makes this Concert Recording the most complete of the remaining Chesses, but not necessarily the best sung.

I would not have bought this if it was not because I found it in a second hand cd store at a very low price. If you have the Danish album, you don't need it.

If you are a Chess virgin and cannot find the Danish album, chose this for near completeness or the Original Concept Album for best cast.

Avoid the Broadway Cast (extremely incomplete, though well sung) and the Swedish Cast (kind of complete, but otherwise weird and lacking the Chess spirit) if you don't happen to be a total Chess nut.

5 out of 5 stars If you like "Chess: the Musical", you need this CD.......2002-06-28

I have owned, and have been a huge fan of, the original London cast recording of Chess since 1985. I love the mix of classical and rock stylings, and I'm also a major fan of practically anything that Benny and Bjorn turn out. However, I approached this album with some reservations. I know the original album of Chess backwards and forwards, so I was a little skeptical as to how a "live" version would compare to the studio version. I needn't have worried. For the most part, this is an absolutely incredible concert, with only one or two weak spots. It boasts an excellent cast, and a wonderful choir and orchestra. Of the main characters, there is only one returning member from the London concept album; Tommy Korberg reprises his role as the Russian, but my gosh........what a difference a decade makes! He was excellent the first time around, but now, Tommy injects his performance with so much fire, it will make your hair stand on end. The showstopping duet with Svetlana (Lena Ericsson)on "Endgame" is worth the price, alone.......just breathtaking. Not everything works equally as well, but as I said above, there are more "hits" than "misses". Having been a fan of the duo, "Gemini", (Anders and Karin Glenmark), I was thrilled to see them step into the spotlight again, this time as the American and Florence, respectively. I was, however, a little disappointed to discover that Anders' performance is not quite up there with Murray Head's in the original. Anders has the better voice, no doubt, but the conviction is just not the same; Murray was more convincing in the role, and I agree with another reviewer who said they didn't like Anders' histrionics. It's a bit "over the top" at times. As for Karin, she is a fabulous singer, (as is her brother.....don't get me wrong on that point....). My only problem with her is her pronunciation on a few words, but seeing how this CD was recorded in Sweden, released on a Swedish label, and probably really isn't intended for an American market, it's kind of understandable too. A couple of good things to point out in general; this CD finally adds two songs that were missing from the original recording; the gorgeous "Someone Else's Story", (beautifully performed by Karin Glenmark), and "The Soviet Machine", (part of which appears in the track "Opening Ceremony"). The reprise of "Merano" is a great addition at the end of the concert, with an ecstatic audience clapping along and cheering at it's conclusion. All in all, this is a great addition to your collection, even if you have the first recording. With variations in tempos, different interpretations of pieces, and two bonus songs, it's the same musical, and yet, not quite the same.

4 out of 5 stars Historic Ragtime.......2001-03-31

Charles Thompson was a contemporary of Jelly Roll Morton and James P. Johnson, and was one of the leading figues of the second generation of St. Louis ragtime pianists.

This album, made up of live recordings from the early 1960s, finds Thompson in reasonable form, playing some of his best known pieces plus a few standards. His powers had declined a little from his 1948-49 American Music recordings, but he was still able to play in an entertaining fashion. Many of the performances are rather short, but these are historic recordings by a little known but important figue in ragtime.

Delmark is to be commended for this release: let's hope they re-issue the rest of the Euphonic back catalogue. Anyone interested in ragtime and early jazz should consider buying this CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Music Says It All.......2006-11-22

The night before the recording, the trio performed at the Estonian House in Toronto. It's a wonderful performance space with lots of wood and great acoustics. The concert was really an intimate affair with Kenny adding many amusing asides between numbers. It was clear that the musicians were on form and had come to play.

The following afternoon, Kenny, Dave, and Trevor assembled at Phase One Studios to record the twelve numbers you'll hear on this disc. There was a small audience of enthusiasts in attendance, many from the previous night's performance. Everyone in the room seemed comfortable with the relaxed atmosphere of the informal recording procedure. The musicians seemed just as loose, but their intensity and focus was evident.

There were some false starts and some second takes and a few coffee breaks. The musicians talked and joked with members of the audience while waiting for the guys in the control room to give them the O.K. to start again. Kenny called out the tunes, the key, and the tempo. He rarely faltered. His tone, attack, and swooping forays seemed just as strong as ever. His ability to capture a song is a priceless thing to witness and probably made that much easier with the able assistance from these particular bandmates.

David Boeddinghaus is a New Orleans pianist with a taste and style that comes from the masters. He's listened and learned from Jelly Roll Morton and Earl Hines, right up to Ralph Sutton and Don Ewell. There is a host of other influences there and they've long ago been incorporated into David's own unique style. He's a remarkably fluent player who deserves more exposure. His solo take on Beale Street Blues is a gem.

Trevor Richards has been playing New Orleans style drums since the 60's when he took lessons from Zutty Singleton. He is among a handful of drummers still playing who have mastered the old technique. It's a wonderful and expressive art form that really captures the essence of old New Orleans.

There doesn't seem to be much point in describing the "blow by blow" of each song. The highlights are many and after listening a few times, you'll find favourite spots of your own. It really is an outstanding recording in every way. The music may even temporarily cause you to forget your troubles and woes...at least, for the sixty four and a half minutes it takes to play the disc. Enthusiastically recommended.
Postscript: Sadly, Kenny Davern passed away on December 12th, 2006.

4 out of 5 stars A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

3 out of 5 stars How many different covers?.......2000-12-22

I've seen at least 4 different versions of this album cover on vinyl.

This is their first full-length album. The re-release contains "Poor Pitiful Me," which is great. This album has a lot of their classics such as Cannibal Cafe and She's Not on the Menu. There are a few other good songs like Broken Toy but this album suffers from too much filler and a slight metal edge.

5 out of 5 stars HOT, HOT, HOT.......2005-08-14

Kurt Carr is one of my favorite writers and producers. The only thing better than listening to their CD is going to a live concert. This project is wonderful and provides a lot of good material for choir directors and worship leaders that are looking for challenging & fun music for their groups. This is a "must buy" if you like gospel music.

5 out of 5 stars Awsome, Powerfule and Insprirational.......1999-12-04

This is a CD worth listening to again and again. It is so anointed that you can feel the power of the Holy Spirit coming from the words of praise and worship in each song. I was very blessed by the whole CD.

5 out of 5 stars The cd is very inspirational and seeing live is even better!.......1999-09-24

The cd does them no justice. To hear the songs live is even better than the cd recording. But I recommend if you love gospel music, then you'll like this cd, I guarantee it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Powerful live album!.......1999-06-30

This is one of the best albums I have heard in a while. It takes you back to albums recorded "live" in great form.

    5 out of 5 stars AWES0ME, AWESOME, AWESOME!!!!!!.......1999-05-03

This is one of the best gospel CDs, if not the best, that I have heard in a long time. I can never hear these God inspired songs too often. My favorite is For Every Mountain which I heard for the first time in my car and then searched everywhere until I found it. Listening to this CD is like having church in your home, car or office. I LOVE IT!!!!!!
