Customer Reviews:
Mary Ann's Review of Songs of Deliverence.......2007-05-09
I believe that music is the universal language and that the Lord God Almighty made it so that in times of tragedy and travail we have an outlet to lift up our voices to be heard and He does and is quick to respond. In times of gladness a joyful noise is '...a sweet sound to His ears...'
The music on this C.D. has all the elements that give us joy in all those times and speaks to us from the throne room.
To Beth Moore and her music ministers, rock on!!! YOu have lifted me up.
Just what I needed!.......2007-03-11
An excellent collection of songs that uplift and encourage me, it's just what I needed for the trials I am going through. Beth Moore has another bestseller!

Customer Reviews:
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Dowland did for lute music what Haydn did for the string quartet and Beethoven the piano sonata. The finest lutenist and songwriter of his age--he composed several of the greatest hits of the late 16th and early 17th centuries--the surviving lute works constitute a sort of encyclopedia of the possibilities of the instrument. There are song arrangements, dance pieces, tributes to the composer's friends, even a musical self-portrait. Much of the music is fashionably sad. Lute songs generally deal with the agony of lost love, and Dowland's most popular tune was called Lachrimae (Tears). Paul O'Dette is simply the best lutenist alive. These five discs are available together at a special price, or separately. A reference edition. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding.......2007-03-31
If you are a fan of the music of John Dowland, you must own this CD. The playing is outstanding to say the least.
It's not heavy breathing.......2006-08-22
It's great that O'Dette gives us the complete solo works, of course. I have the common reaction to O'Dette: his technique is flawless, his performance unengaging.
Others have remarked on the "heavy breathing" noticeable on the recordings -- it's not heavy breathing, but the movement of his fingers on the gut strings making that sound.
Technically good, emotionally bland. .......2006-04-11
Considering the extreme paucity of (especially solo) lute recordings currently available worldwide,
but especially in the US, this set becomes an essential "must have" for all lovers of the lute.
Yet it somehow disappoints.
I am sure that Paul O'Dette is brimming over with virtuousity and a technical expertise
that I am hardly one to pass sound judgement upon.
But the recordings have a flatness and monotony;
the songs are rendered with precision, but seem to lack feeling, empathy, or enthusiasm throughout the offering.
It is an impressive compendium, and I'm glad I purchased it.
There are very few lutenists out there producing any music at all, so Mr. O'Dette should certainly be praised
for delivering such a substantial feast to our ears.
It just should have had more flavor.
Where is Konrad Ragossnig when you need him?
Highly recommended.......2005-10-23
I bought Volume 1 of this set a couple of years ago. It has become one of my favorite CDs, so I thought I would enjoy the full set. I have not been disappointed. I find the sound quality excellent, the playing superb. The included booklet has a lot of interesting background material. The music is great as background for a dinner party or intimate conversation, but has depth aplenty for concentrated listening. I often listen to it while working at the computer where I swear it improves concentration and productivity!
A few tunes appear more than once as Dowland reused some work, but the arrangements are sufficiently different to be interesting. It is his complete lute works, after all. Some might criticise the set for sounding too much in the same style. It is the work of one composer, and if you happen to like the style, as I do, this is a pro rather than a con.
Another reviewer mentioned obtrusive breathing on the recording. I had listened to Volume 1 for two years before reading the review and had not noticed this. On listening carefully, there is breathing audible, but I do not find it a problem. Perhaps it depends whether one listens to the music or the background.
just a warning..........2005-10-14
Beautiful music, but... you can hear Paul's heavy breathing throughout. Apparently a lot of other reviewers either don't hear the heavy breathing, or aren't bothered by it, but for me, it's a near deal-breaker. Go ahead and mark my review as unhelpful, but I had to put the warning out there.

The picture.......2006-12-11
I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Pete Seeger is a national treasure, a living American institution. Unfortunately in our fast-paced world we often forget about our treasures, our institutions, and our heritage. This wonderful collection, culled from his massive library of work with Folkways Records, is, if nothing else, a reminder of how much Pete Seeger means to America. Seeger sang for the people and their rights at a time when that could get rabble-rousers blacklisted and worse. What's more, he got the people singing for themselves. You'll know many of these songs--the title track, "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," "Turn, Turn, Turn"--you just might not know them in their original voice. If I Had a Hammer will set that straight. --Michael Ruby

While Have All the FLowers Gone, Indeed.......2006-04-03
This review is being used to describe several of Pete Seeger's recordings. Although I have listened to most of his songs and recordings these represent those that best represent his life's work.
My musical tastes were formed, as were many of those of the generation of 1968, by `Rock and Roll' music exemplified by the Rolling Stones and Beatles and by the blues revival, both Delta and Chicago style. However, those forms as much as they gave pleasure were only marginally political at best. In short, these were entertainers performing material that spoke to us. In the most general sense that is all one should expect of a performer. Thus, for the most part that music need not be reviewed here. Those who thought that a new musical sensibility laid the foundations for a cultural or political revolution have long ago been proven wrong.
That said, in the early 1960's there nevertheless was another form of musical sensibility that was directly tied to radical political expression- the folk revival. This entailed a search for roots and relevancy in musical expression. While not all forms of folk music lent themselves to radical politics it is hard to see the 1960's cultural rebellion without giving a nod to such figures as Dave Van Ronk, the early Bob Dylan, Utah Phillips, Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie and others. Whatever entertainment value these performers provided they also spoke to and prodded our political development. They did have a message and an agenda and we responded as such. That these musicians' respective agendas proved inadequate and/or short-lived does not negate their affect on the times.
As I have noted in my review of Dave Van Ronk's work when I first heard folk music in my youth I felt unsure about whether I liked it or not. As least against my strong feelings about the Rolling Stones and my favorite blues artist such as Howling Wolf and Elmore James. Then on some late night radio folk show here in Boston I heard Dave Van Ronk singing `Come All You Fair and Tender Ladies' and that was it. From that time to the present folk music has been a staple of my musical tastes. From there I expanded my play list of folk artists with a political message, including obviously Pete Seeger.
Although I had probably heard Seeger's `Had I a Golden Thread' at some earlier point I actually learned about his music secondhand from a recording of Songs of the Spanish Civil War which included `Viva la Quince Brigada' a tribute to the American Abraham Lincoln Battalion of the International Brigades. Since I was intensely interested in that fight in Spain and in that "premature anti-fascist" organization I was hooked. While like Woody Guthrie Seeger's influence has had its ebbs and flows since that time each succeeding generation of folk singers still seems to be drawn to his simple, honest tunes about the previous political struggles and the ordinary people who made this country, for good or evil what it is today.
Pete's relationship with the American Communist Party while no secret is not widely known. As with Woody what is interesting is that the subjects of his songs fairly closely reflect the party line as it changed to reflect the winds blowing from Moscow. Pete's best work, like Woody's is reflected in the People's Front style of ` Where Have All The Flowers Gone' and the above-mentioned "Golden Thread" reflecting that party's further development of its class collaborationist policy with the Democratic Party. Thus, they gave up on the fight for an indpendent working party based on its own program. Political differnces between us aside, listen to his recordings and learn about hard times and struggle of an earlier period.
Definitive rally songs.......2005-01-29
This is the most conceptually complete Pete Seeger compilation as far as I'm concerned (unfortunately, tho, it lacks some Columbia era comps: "Bells Of Rhymney" "Waist Deep In the Muddy," etc.). However, this collection compiles what are Seeger's forte: rally songs--songs that motivate people to take social stands. The collection also contains his most definitive versions of some of his best known songs (e.g., Where Have All the Flowers Gone, We Shall Overcome), unlike the Columbia "Greatest Hits" version, which limits itself solely to Columbia recordings. This collection, on the other hand, spans over 4 decades. The earliest recordings are from 1955, and the latest 2 songs were recorded in 1998 especially for this collection. Also it has a previously unreleased tape recording of "Turn Turn Turn." Most of the recordings are from the late 50s and early 60s--a period, indeed, that were "a-changin," as a Seeger mentor would go on to say. Beautiful music for those who believe in a good cause or two.
Pete Seeger as a protest folksinger, the Folkways recordings.......2004-07-10
My introduction to Pete Seeger was when he contributed to the cancellation of "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" when he showed up in 1967 and sang "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy," a song which attacked the Vietnam War and President Lyndon Johnson, albeit through a metaphorical narrative. Eventually I learned that Seeger is arguably the key figure in the folk music movement of the 20th century, a living link between Woody Guthrie (Seeger and Guthrie formed the Almanac Singers) and Bob Dylan. But certainly Seeger was more passionate about politics, the environment, and humanity than either of those gigantic figures. The fact that he was blacklisted during the McCarthy era is enough to establish his bona fides, but so is his career, begun in the late 1930s and continuing through several wars, a dozen causes, and thousands of union meetings. Then there are Seeger's Folkways recordings, that were the first sound of authentic American folk music heard by countless children.
"If I Had a Hammer: Songs of Hope & Struggle" is a collection of the best of Seeger's Folkways recordings from the late 1950s and early 1960s. This is the Pete Seeger who was always singing for a cause, and after the original 1956 version of "If I Had a Hammer," written by Seeger and fellow Weaver Lee Hays, you can see how these songs are organized by common themes. First up are songs about the struggle of the American unions and labor movement (tracks 2-9), which offers "Which Side Are You On?", "Casey Jones (The Union Scab)," "Joe Hill," Guthrie's "Union Maid," and, of course, "Solidarity Forever," all sung by Seeger in his clear voice accompanied by the banjo.
Beginning with "Where Have the Flowers Gone?," Seeger's other most recognizable original tune, the songs deal with the peace movement (tracks 10-14), which includes "Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream" and "Study War No More (Down by the Riverside"). Starting with Leadbelly's "Burgeois Blues" and ending with the traditional "We Shall Overcome," are songs about the civil rights struggle (tracks 15-18). The final segment of the album (tracks 19-26) are devoted to general songs of hope and struggle, the most recognizable of which will be "Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season") late doen by the Byrds. There are also a couple of songs recorded in 1998, "We'll All Be A-Doubling" and "Arrange and Rearrange," which show that in recent years the voice has become weaker but that the spirit remains strong.
The liner notes are instructive, detailing the origins of each song and how they have changed over the years. When you listen to these songs you too will become convinced that the only authentic folk music is about political ideas. But then Seeger and Lee Hays, along with Ronnie Gilbert and Fred Hellerman, formed the Weavers who popularized more traditional folksongs and spirituals like "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine," and "Goodnight Irene." To fully appreciate American folk music you simply have to have both a Weavers hit collection and a collection of Seeger's Folksway songs, like "If I Had a Hammer: Songs of Hope & Struggle."
A sad old song.......2003-06-12
A great album from a long time gone, when there was still
a real union in america. You'll tend to like it
if you earn a working folks salary and hate it if you don't.
that is too say, if your a corporate parasite, and many of you will be, you'll find it a mite uncomfortable.
all folks are not created equal, as long as daddy can grease them
ole wheels,
the struggle continues.. but for most americans, just as a bowel movement..
Enjoy even if you disagree with his politics.......2003-03-09
Pete was famous for his left-wing politics, strongly in support of industrial trade unions and against war. This collection brings together his best political songs, which are enjoyable even for those (like me) who disagree with him. Although they were a product of their times, some of these songs prove that some things never change, being just as valid (or not) today as they were back then.
The compilation is arranged with all the songs for each theme grouped together. The title track serves as an introduction, and is followed by eight songs about workers and unions, then five songs championing peace, then four civil rights songs, ending with eight songs of hope, the last being the title track again.
Pete recorded many albums of political songs, so this CD can only offer a small sample, but the essentials are here, including Where have all the flowers gone, We shall overcome and Turn turn turn - this last song, taking its lyrics from the Book of Revelations in the bible, became famous after the Byrds covered it.
While some will regard most of these songs as confirming their beliefs, those who disagree can listen to them, partly with amusement and partly as a reminder that a significant number of people agree with Pete, so nothing should ever be taken for granted. I only wish that people with different political views could express themselves equally effectively. All the great political singers take a left-wing stance, though not always as far left as Pete. Perhaps the political right never felt the need to sing about their beliefs.
The CD comes with an extensive booklet describing how many of these songs came to be written (not always by Pete) as far as is known. Like the songs themselves, you can enjoy reading about them whatever your politics.

Customer Reviews:
The Most Simple Exercise Songs For Young Children From Bobby Susser.......2006-05-22
I have three day care centers in Florida where music and exercise are favorites in the curriculum for my little children. This collection of very simple songs and exercises is just that. It shows, through the repetition of catchy lines, that Bobby Susser is very aware of children's needs. Susser knows that when he hits upon something catchy for the kids and through his repetition of lyrical and musical phrases, not to let up, giving the kids just what they want. He doesn't give them too much, but enough so they are thoroughly interested, satisfied, and enthusiastic. He knows when to keep going, and when to let up. For those of you who work with kids, you know the importance of repetition. Bobby Susser has mastered repetition of very catchy sections of songs he's created and in doing so, holds children's interest, gives them a heck of a good time, and teaches them all at the same time. I majored in preschool education and music, and believe me, Bobby Susser is a subtle master at teaching through his simple, catchy, songs with repetetive phrases written especially for little ones.

I AM A KINDERGARTEN TEACHER AND HAVE USED THIS ALBUM IN CASSETTE FIRST. THEN I BOUGHT THE CD WHEN MY TAPE WORE OUT. I JUST GOT ANOTHER CD BECAUSE I GAVE A TEACHER FRIEND THE CD TO BORROW. SHE LOVED IT SO MUCH FOR HER KINDERGARTEN CLASS THAT SHE ASKED IF SHE COULD KEEP IT. I GAVE IT TO HER AS A GIFT, AND I AM ENJOYING WORKING WITH MY NEW CD, AND WATCHING MY CLASS ENJOY THEMSELVES WHILE THEY EXERCISE AND LEARN OTHER GOOD HEALTH HABITS TO THESE CATCHY SONGS."WIGGLE WIGGLE AND OTHER EXERCISES" IS ONE EARLY CHILDHOOD ALBUM YOU CAN SURELY LABEL AS 'OLD TRIED AND TRUE.' IT NEVER FAILS TO WORK WITH THE KIDS.
The Benchmark Exercise Album For Young Children.......2005-10-24
While B.B. King is the benchmark guitarist for playing the blues, Ray Charles, the benchmark singer for combining soul and gospel music, Barbra Streisand the benchmark vocalist for her range and clarity, Paul Simon, the benchmark singer/songwriter for telling his stories in song format, and Bob Dylan, the benchmark singer/songwriter for using unique phrases and the delivery of them, Bobby Susser's album "Wiggle Wiggle And Other Exercises" is undoubtedly the benchmark album for original songs for young children to exercise to. I am a kindergarten teacher, and I specialize in teaching music, and subjects through music. I have used virtually every collection of songs available for young children to sing along with and exercise to. Some are OK, and some are somewhat good. However, if you want the real thing, Bobby Susser gives it to you in every exercise song in this collection. The repetition of his catchy phrases and melodies is not boring, but rather very successful in teaching the kids the songs and exercises, and in keeping the children always interested. He's a master at using repetition in a positive way for children. It is very obvious, after seeing the children respond immediately to the simple rhythms, friendly vocal deliveries, and all the fun and easy to learn songs that convey the importance of exercise, good health habits, having fun, and incorporating these ideas into your daily routine at an early age, Bobby Susser knows how to make the very most of a song, and a simple 'Wiggle' for young children like noone else I've heard in the nineteen years I've taught little children.
When you listen to the songs "Wiggle Wiggle", "March Around In A Circle", "Let's Pretend", "Hello Hello Goodbye Goodbye", and "Rest Awhile", it is apparent that Bobby Susser is no accident and creates collections for young children that makes children's music history the first time any of his titles are heard. Anyone can easily tell that he cares and is dedicated to the children.
The Finest Kid Songs For Kid Exercises From Bobby Susser.......2005-05-05
This album has everything you possibly want and need for an exercise album for young kids. My preschool class never tires of "Wiggle Wiggle And Other Exercises." Every song is so catchy and exciting for my class. Every song states a purpose, and has printed lyrics and suggested activities in the teacher/parent notes booklet. Subjects covered are developing gross and fine motor skills, coordination, right/left discrimination, listening skills, rhythm, counting, and good health habits, while exercising, and singing. Bobby Susser ends this great collection with a soothing rest song for the kids. This album has it all.
Bobby Susser's Songs And Exercises Are #1 On My Kids' List.......2005-04-04
I'm a first grade teacher who has worked with exercises, and movement songs with my kids. From day to day and year to year this Bobby Susser album "Wiggle Wiggle And Other Exercises" is #1 on my kids' list. The songs are very catchy, but also simple enough for young kids to easily learn. The beats and rhythms are excellent for my young class. They quickly learn the songs and exercises, and have loads of fun doing and learning important health and exercise habits that will benefit them throughout their lives.

Jeanette MacDonald Favorites.......2007-05-13
This CD is an incredible testimony and celebration of an American Master Singer.
A must have for all. An introduction to quality and good taste for a new generation of music lovers.
A MUST for any Jeanette fan!.......2006-04-25
This CD is a gem! The songs included on it are beautiful and show off MacDonald's incredible voice. The best part of this CD, however, is the sound quality. Unlike many of her other recordings, and those featuring her with frequent costar Nelson Eddy, the sound on this CD is pristine, and you can barely tell the recordings are 50+ years old!
Jeanette MacDonald Was Unique.......2001-03-12
It really doesn't matter whether or not she could sing; Jeanette MacDonald was unique. On these old recordings, her voice sounds thin and watery, and contemporary tastes do not respond so readily to the sentimentality and predictability of her movies. But she was a gracious lady and glittering presence on the silver screen. These film songs do suggest the excitement she generated when her movies first appeared. And how many truly major singers she inspired! Joan Sutherland recalled meeting MacDonald a few years before her death. Said Sutherland: "I still had stars in my eyes."
An excellent demonstration of Jeanette MacDonald's artistry.......1998-12-18
The highlights of this Jeanette MacDonald CD include her excellent singing of Delibes' "Les Filles de Cadiz," the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria," and the "Jewel Song" from "Faust." A much-underrated artist, MacDonald proves here that she can handle a wide range of music, from concert songs and opera arias to familiar tunes from her operetta films. Particularly fine are her renditions of "Only a Rose," and Herbert's "Romany Life" (in spite of an amateurish male chorus). Highly recommended not only as a tribute to filmdom's first lady of song, but also to listeners who enjoy both opera and musical comedy.

20:49.......2006-03-24
will oldham's falsetto is just right here, not too wavery, which is just right for the instrumentation (liamhayes' piano is nice indeed). the length too is good, and the leonard cohen nod appropriate/reciated.
did you like the cake?.......2001-05-04
great early-ish palace ep. its got some classic will oldham chestnuts, 'all gone','untitled', and the recording quality is eerie and fits the mood of the songs. the werner herzog nod shows will has cool friends. appropriate drumming and organ swells abound. its kinda like a dylan on absinthe thing, to painfully filter an artist through the metaphor of another one. a good palace starting place. i too bonded with/was crushed by this album on a lonely bus ride. listen to this album until the songs arent sad anymore, then you know its great.
You can't get better depression than this.......2000-09-04
Will Oldham has become old hat by now, but this EP is truly fantastic (rivalling URGE Overkill's "Stull EP" as the best EP of the 90's). All the songs just flow together. It is the perfect thing to listen to while riding on a lonley bus on a cold and wet February day.
Hope is Heaven on Earth.......1999-11-25
Just like Mountain, this mini album is one of very high quality. Enjoy it, play it over and over, and it can make your day. God save Will Oldham!

Grieg's song's were almost all composed for his wife Nina. She was a singing actress with a considerable stage presence, if not a particularly impressive voice. In fact, Nina and Edvard Grieg were very much the Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya of the 19th century, though the style and substance of Grieg's songs' is as different from 1920s Berlin as can be imagined. Haugtussa is Grieg's most important song cycle. It's tells the story of a goat shephard abandoned by her lover. Each of the songs is in simple strophic (verse and refrain) form, but the music has a tremendous range and variety, particularly in the folk-tinged harmony. Anne Sofie von Otter's performance is the outstanding Grieg song recital of our time, period. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
GRIEG APPASSIONATO.......2005-07-18
A good deal of care and sensitivity has gone into just making the selection of these 25 songs, before we even reach the performances. Some of the songs are fairly light in sentiment and expression, and none is to full German-Lied weight or portentousness, but there is real passion in most of them. What is blessedly absent throughout is the sentimental trifling that Grieg can sometimes be guilty of.
Von Otter is not one to do things by halves either. As usual she gives the songs everything she's got, which is of course a great deal. Thought has obviously gone into the way she has been recorded too. The acoustic is just faintly suggestive of a cathedral, but a voice like this needs space around it, and I myself support this way of doing things. I simply can't comment on any national or Scandinavian aspects to these readings. In any case I suspect the personal tone of this high-powered singer is a lot more to the point. The song `Spring' on the 18th track of this disc is well known from its orchestral version, but never in the innumerable orchestral renditions, many by Scandinavian orchestras, that I've heard has the climactic phrase of the melody been put over with such power and intensity as it is here. Obviously, the music has to be able to stand up to such an approach, and I find that it comes through with flying colours. The songs are mainly love-lyrics with some associated folk-pastoral numbers in a familiar way. There are some sad moments, particularly when the poor shepherdess loses her love in the 7th song, and the text of the following and final poem in this cycle about the brook must surely recall Schubert's Baches Wiegenlied to everyone, but even it stops short of what happens in that. In general however the tone is one of longing with intermittent joy, and every song seemed to me perfectly well suited to its singer.
Von Otter's partnership with Forsberg is well and truly established by now and there is a sense of complete understanding between them as we would expect. Forsberg isn't afraid to let his concert grand rip on occasion either, nor would I have wanted him to be. What I would have liked all the same is a little more refinement in his touch. He provides that very nicely indeed in the very last item in the recital. If he had done this more consistently throughout my mind would have been veering off less into tangential thoughts about how Gould might have handled such piano-writing.
The liner-note is brief but helpful, and full texts of the lyrics (some German, mostly in alternative forms of Norwegian) are provided with English translation.
A warm Spring in Norway.......2004-06-20
This is one delicious album. Von Otter has made a wonderful selection of love songs from Grieg. You very seldom hear the Nordic iciness that can be found so often in Grieg's instrumental chamber works. There is beautiful lyrical warmth in these songs written for his wife, springing out of the nature of the lyrics. Flowers explode from the piano accompaniment. The theme of Springtime appears again and again throughout these songs. Von Otter's warm, full voice brings the songs to wonderful life. The recording acoustics have the sound of recital hall instead of a recording studio. But I'm grateful for this. Von Otter's powerful voice singing directly into your ear could be overwhelming. Although the acoustics make Forsberg's piano sound a bit flat. Von Otter and Forsberg sink their teeth into every emotion projected from the lyrics and music, so be prepared for an often unsubtle emotional assault on your sensibilities. The beauty of these neglected songs is brought to life in a vivid way. This album is a treat you can't afford to pass up.
