The Who: The Ultimate Collection [Original recording remastered]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The Who's mighty catalog of beautiful, poignant, and often silly pop songs bashed out with Cassius Clay finesse has suffered in the past at the hands of multiple, butcher-shop best-ofs and horrible packaging. But this thrilling band--undeniably one of ye classicke rocke's greatest--gets the career-spanning entry-point compilation it deserves with the double-disc Ultimate Collection. The songs included here are no-brainers, for the most part--if they aren't huge hits like "My Generation," "I Can See for Miles," or "Baba O'Riley," they're long-standing fan favorites such as "Boris the Spider," "Pure and Easy," and "Squeeze Box." And while this reviewer wishes different songs were chosen from Tommy, and more than one tune was gathered from their arguably finest (and definitely silliest) album, The Who Sell Out, this record really isn't for fans (aside from the total trainspotter types) but for newcomers. --Mike McGonigal

Probably is ultimate.......2007-07-01
Definitely a great job on the collection and the booklet is worth a lot of the price as well.
If You Only Want To Own One Who Set..........2007-06-29
"The Ultimate Collection" should be it.Perfect selection of classic songs(just check the track list),excellent sound quality, cool booklet featuring memorablia, informative liner notes and recording dates to every song included make this ready made for the casual fan who just the cream of the crop of this legendary band.
Very good introduction to one of the best Rock bands in the world - ever!.......2007-06-05
I must admit that one of my greatest mistakes as a Rock music fan, was missing to follow the career of The Who until TOMMY was issued as a movie (1975). Since then, I found that The Who is such a great British Rock band and a landmark in the story of Rock music, in the same level of the Beatles, the Stones, Led Zeppelin or other magnificent British Rock packs (Yes, ELP, the Kinks, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, etc.).
I'm sure there are other Who compilations still available, who will satisfy classic Rock purists more than this "Ultimate". However, if you're just trying to increase your knowledge of how good British Rock became in the 1960s and 1970s, this The Who collection at no doubt will lead you to get later their entire album collection. Enjoy it!
This Is Real Music........2007-05-19
The Who are one of the top 5 greatest rock groups ever. Thats just not debatable. Listen to this collection and you will see why they are now legends of music. There have been many greatest hits albums for The Who because they have made so many classics. But this one beats all the other ones by far. It's got everyone of there gigantic hits and every cult-fan favorite. Boris The Spider and Eminence Front were not big hits, but they are still very popular among Who fans(me being one of them). And then you have all the basics: Baba O'Riley,Long Live Rock,Who Are You,My Generation,Pinball Wizard and many more. Overall, this is 35 songs of rock greatness. There will never be another group like The Who. They changed the face of music. Just listen to this CD and you will feel better. You will just feel happier. Long Live The Who!
The Who for Beginners.......2007-05-07
This CD is The Who- 101 for any new Who fan that you would like to acclimate with the band...like your kids, for example. Great listening for old fans, as well.

Customer Reviews:
Well worth the price.......2006-04-13
I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.
Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23
It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).
In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.
Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.
Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15
It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.
Not quite the ultimate...........2002-03-25
This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!
Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05
It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

The best of the best.......2006-08-21
IF you want all the WHO's top hits...this is the CD...it takes you from their first hit "Can't Explain" to Emminence Front".
I am a huge fan and have been critical with previous greatest hits albums that have been released by the Who...but with this one...I have no complaints...Just praise!
If you are a new Who fan, this is the one for you.......2005-02-05
This CD has all the great Who singles plus some album tracks and excellent sound quality. Many tracks are in "Stereo" except the early stuff. I especially like "I Can See For Miles". Pete Townshend's guitar playing really blows me away. "Happy Jack" is also great with excellent bassline. Afterall, all the songs are just excellent. Let's go and get it.

Great Collection with OVERBLOWN BASS !!!.......2006-09-10
As usual, being an audiophile nut & a big Guess Who / Burton Cummings fan, my review of this fine collection of songs isn't about the material but the sound. As with some the other reviews, I wish RCA/BMG would stop messing around with releasing all kinds of so called "greatest hits" packages (all with the same songs) & release all of the RCA collection of Guess Who albums in the United States. A couple of years ago, some of the less comercially successful but far superior albums were released in Canada on these "2 for 1" CD's with absolutly horrible sound. I bought them all & in less than a week sold them all on ebay !! (I much rather listen to the vinyl than these nasty sounding cds) Anyway, this collection isn't as bad as those from a sound standpoint, the highs are nice & clear but the collection was equalized with way too much low end, especially at around the 40 hz level. You may not notice this as much on a boom box but if you have good equipment with a subwoofer, the bass is way too overpowering on just about all the songs. What you might do to overcome this is to record the collection through an equalizer & onto a home audio CD-R. This way you can trim back on the lows around 30 to 40 hz & end up with a decent sounding recording.
3 discs - the next best thing to a box set.......2006-05-10
Nearly complete compilation of their 11 studio albums with Burton Cummings. I'd pick most of the same tracks for a 3-disk compilation.
A 4 disk set would be perfect. Someday they will get the 5-disk box set treatment(4 disks plus one of outakes, etc).
Below are some notes on each disk in the set.
====================================
Disk One in the Ultimate Collection is from their first 4 RCA albums
Disk One covers the albums American Woman(#3) and Share the Land(#4) well. A little light on the first two albums Wheatfield Soul(#1) and Canned Wheat(#2) (two of the 3 albums with Randy Bachman).
Notable Personnel Change: Soon-to-be Bachman Turner Overdrive front man Randy Bachman was replaced on Album #4 'Share the Land' by Kurt Winter and Greg Leskiw.
Disk One Could benefit by including some of the below tracks:
Pink Wine Sparkles in the Glass (from album #1)
Found Her in a Star (#1)
Wednesday in Your Garden (#1)
6 A.M. Or Nearer (#2)
Minstrel Boy (#2)
Key (edit) (#2)
Talisman (#3)
Moan For You Joe (#4)
=============================================================
Disk Two - Covers the 4 mid-period albums when they fell from grace. The 3 studio albums (Bannatyne (album #5), Rocking (#6), Artifical Paradise(#7)) had something of a common thread of updated 50s blues, jazz and rock and roll with Cummings penchant for non-sensical lyrics.
The Live Album (The Paramount) is something of a period piece represented by the single 'Saskatoon'.
The following studio tracks also merit inclusion in a complete collection:
She Might Have Been A Nice Girl (from studio album #5)
Grey Day (#5)
Pain Train (#5)
Back To The City (#6)
Your Nashville Sneakers (#6)
Smoke Big Factory (#6)
All Hashed Out (#7)
Rock And Roller Steam (#7)
=====================================================
Disk 3 is from their last 4 studio discs with Cummings and the last two band incarnations: Leskiw (good riddance, poor fit)
and original bassist Kale were gone (leaving before Artifical Paradise).
The disk titled #10 (their 8th studio album and 10th RCA album -- a live package and greatest hits package being the others) was the strongest in years.
#10 is under-represented here.
'Road Food (#9)' got them back on the charts with 'Star Baby' and the novelty hit 'Clap for the Wolfman'. Studio Disks 10 and 11 ('Flavours' and 'Power in the Music') included ex-James Gang guitarist Dom Troiano replacing Kurt Winter. The sound shifted to a more MOR jazz and pop sound. Below are some notable tracks missing from the Ultimate Collection:
Take it Off of My shoulders( from studio album #8)
Miss Frizzy(#8)
Carboard Empire(#8)
Just Let Me Sing(#8)
Eye(#10)
Diggin' Yourself(#10)
Nobody Knows His Name(#10)
Power In The Music(#11)
Shopping Bag Lady(#11)
Down And Out Woman(#11)
decent, but..........2003-03-27
For fans of The Guess Who, their current CD catalog is disappointing, particularly when some of their best music (with Kurt Winter) is unavailable. Which is one of the problems I have with this collection. The same songs that you can find on most of the other Guess Who collections are found here--not a lot of hard to find material. I especially miss songs from "Rockin'" and "So Long Bannatyne", such as "Smoke Big Factory", "She Might Have Been A Nice Girl", "One Man Army", "Back To The City" and "Nashville Sneakers". Great tunes left off this collection in favor of weaker tunes like "Arrivederci Girl", "Orly", "One Divided" and "Truckin' off Across the Sky". Naturally the choices for collections are subjective, but even "Albert Flasher" was never one of my favorites, and you'll find it on every Guess Who "Best Of...". Let's hope that we can get those missing tracks somewhere soon...!
No Shakin'? Not Buyin'!.......2001-09-29
It may not have been their biggest hit, but "Shakin' All Over" was sure as heck the best thing the Guess Who ever did and is easily one of the top 10 greatest rock'n'roll songs of all time. (The original version by England's Johnny Kidd and the Pirates is also excellent, but the Who make rather a mess of it on their otherwise superb "Live at Leeds" album.)
The Guess Who are even opening their current (2001) tour of the U.S. with Shakin' All Over, and man does it cook!! Sets the stage perfectly for one hell-aciously good show. So one might have thought with three CDs to fill, BMG or RCA who whatever label put this baby out could have easily squeezed Shakin' in. But noooooooooo! It ain't here. Perhaps Burton Cummings was miffed that the vocal was performed by original vocalist Chad Allen (but heck, they could have wiped Chad's vocal and put on Burton's and it would probably be even better -- although I never realized until many years later that it wasn't Burton). Or more likely there was some contract dispute with whomever owns the rights to the early recordings. Regardless, I refuse to buy this collection without Shakin' -- it would be like buying a copy of the Mona Lisa without her smile. I do, however, give the compiler much credit for including the group's second best track (and a non-hit at that), "Heart Brokin' Bopper" from the criminally under-rated "Rockin'" album -- the band's best post-Bachman recording. My band used to do a cover version of it, and even we sounded good on it! They might also add Burton's best solo track, "Stand Tall." And if the reviewer above is correct about the booklet being skimpy, I'd say wait for something better to come out. Record label people, please note: the booklets for these retrospective anthologies are often nearly as important to me as the CDs -- so please don't skimp on them!I hope they issue a live CD of the current tour -- it's real interesting to hear the band transform into Bachman, Turner, Guesswhover Drive and cover BTO's biggest hits (which far outshine most of the later-day Guess Who material). ...
Some good tunes missiing, but overall not bad........2000-09-08
As the years have gone on, I have been given a bad time about listening to the same music since 1970. My Guess Who albums, every one ever released, have been played so much that they have lost their zip. This collection is the best available and sounds great. A few of my favorite tunes are not included such as Talisman, Just Let Me Sing and a few others, but since I am a die hard fan, I can't expect a collection to have it all. If you need a dose of Guess Who, you can't go wrong with this collection.

a masterpiece.......2004-06-17
these are two discs of the finest music money can buy.all their big hits like i can see for miles, wont get fooled again, pinball wizard and 5.15 are featured here.this is one compilation which should be there in your cd collection along with live at leeds from the same band.five stars.
Limited Edition! (UK Release).......2003-05-27
As stated in reviews past, The Who experience is firmly rooted in R&B. Townshend, Daltrey, Entwhistle, Moon & later, Jones provided the brilliant fire that burned through the 60's, 70's and early 80's. This imported set truly encapsulates their struggle against authority ("My Generation","Won't Get Fooled Again","Long Live Rock") and Townshend's on-going quest for divine inspiration. ("The Seeker","Bargain","Behind Blue Eyes","Pure and Easy","Love Reign O'er Me")
A true fan should get this UK release instead of the US release. It includes more tracks as well as, a third enhanced-cd where one can view the lads in all their glory singing "Baba O'Riley" and "Substitute" LIVE from Charlton, 1974. A MUST-BUY!...
"...The future's been seen, as men try to realize the simple secret of the Note in us all..."
-- Peter Townshend
Better than the U.S. release.......2003-01-08
Because I have been a Who fanatic ever since seeing them for the first time on the Smothers Brothers TV show in 1967, I don't know how objective I can be, but here goes. This is better than the U.S. release for three reasons. First, the bonus disc includes not only the same four audio recordings, but also two live video recordings playable on your DVD player. Second, the enclosed printed material is superior to that which comes with the U.S. CD. Third, it adds Another Tricky Day, the only great song from the otherwise miserable Face Dances album.
Now for my only complaints. This release does not include the sticker that was in the U.S. version. It also adds Don't Let Go the Coat and The Quiet One, two weak songs from Face Dances. It includes only two songs from It's Hard (Eminence Front and Athena), which is a vastly underrated album that is far superior to Face Dances, and (also like the U.S. version) it does not include Relay. However, since this set does include all of the wonderful but now U.S.-deleted Meaty, Beaty, Big & Bouncy (to be fair, the U.S. release does, too) it must now be regarded as the definitive (and truly ultimate) collection of The World's Greatest Rock Band. MAXIMUM R&B!

Career-spanning compilation.......2005-03-07
The Who never had a number one hit in either Britain or America though they came close, but it didn't matter as they recorded a body of work that ensures their place in rock history. Their influence on subsequent generations of rock musicians is substantial but hard to measure. They had been around under various names (first the Detours, the High Numbers) before finally hitting the big time as the Who. This compilation covers all their music together although it does not include their solo music.
In the sixties, the Who had a string of major hits in Britain and America, which included such classics as I can't explain, Anyway anyhow anywhere, My generation, Substitute, I'm a boy, Happy Jack, Pictures of Lily, I can see for miles and Pinball wizard, all of which reached the British top ten.
By the end of the sixties, the Who had begun to shift their focus from singles to albums. The rock opera, Tommy, is regarded as a classic and later inspired a film with the same title, as did their other famous album, Quadrophenia. These weren't their only great albums - another (Who's next) included the brilliant track, Baba O' Riley, which wasn't a hit but became popular among Who fans.
During the seventies, the members of the Who sometimes pursued their own solo projects, but despite these diversions the Who (as a group) still managed the occasional hit single with Won't get fooled again (1971), Join together (1972), Squeeze box (1976) and You better you bet (1981) as well as a re-issue of Substitute (1976) all making the UK top ten.
This compilation contains all the Who's big hits, most of their minor hits and the best of their album tracks.
"ALMOST PERFECT COMPILATION".......2004-08-11
It's the UK version of their "Ultimate Collection". Only missing one song that I would have liked to have seen on this CD---"Going Mobile". Besides that, It's great! It also has a different insert with rare photos and a brief history of the band with some very interesting trivia. It's certainly worth the Import price and I'm glad that I picked one up. Get one while they're still around.
