Aerosmith's Greatest Hits [Limited Edition] [Original recording remastered]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Even before their second fling with the pop mainstream, Aerosmith were one of Top 40's favorite hard-rock bands, so ubiquitous--and so funky--that Run-D.M.C. were vociferous fans. Their '70s output included at least three classic albums (Aerosmith, Toys in the Attic, and Rocks). This disc collects unstoppable singles into a horny, howling little piece of archaeology that makes even weak links like "Kings and Queens" sound great. And the truly great stuff here--"Sweet Emotion," "Last Child," "Dream On"--runs the gamut of style and feeling from swaggering freak-flag-flying to power-ballad roots that display a genuine ache. Your Aerosmith collection shouldn't end here, but this red-and-white bomb is a great place to start. --Rickey Wright

AEROSMITH WILL ROCK ON FOREVER.......2007-06-06
If you are going to an AEROSMITH CONCERT, like I am in July (at the Konocti Harbor & Spa in Clearlake California!!!!!!!!) you had better refresh yourself with this disc...you don't want to be the only one who doesn't know all the words to the classic songs! A great refresher, a great party disc and naturally a Rock and Roll classic no collection should be without.
Well, At Least It's A Start.......2007-05-22
The four stars on this review are directed solely at the songs contained on this album. The album itself is only worthy of three stars. It contains a couple of edited tunes ("Sweet Emotion" and "Kings And Queens") and a brief collection of some solid Aerosmith tunes. This album, like many before have stated, is for completionists and casual fans only. If you really want early Aerosmith, I suggest you seek out the original albums or if all you want is their greatest hits, look for some of the newer collections.
Once again, the songs themselves are brilliant, but the album's cheap price comes with a deserved cheap feel to it. Save up your money and buy a better set.
They Rock.......2007-03-07
Aerosmith do I need to say more. This has the best of everything they did. Enough said.
Despite what others say, I really like this..........2006-08-25
This certainly isn't the only greatest hits album by Aerosmith, but it's the only one i have. I had most of their LP records years ago, but no longer have a turntable. This cd has some of my favorites by the band, as I like their older stuff better than the more recent. Everything from the late 80's on just is not as good in my opinion.
IF you like the songs from their earlier works, you will appreciate this. I don't know about editting and how the music transferred to cd..i thought it sounded fine..especially with the volume turned way up!
A good greatest hits, and an even better introduction to the band.
at least its better than O yeah.......2006-08-06
Greatest Hits is Aerosmith's first compilation. It's also probably their best one, considering it had all the truly essential songs up to that point. Tracks like Mama Kin, Seasons of Wither, Train Kept a Rollin, Toys in the Attic, and Uncle Salty probably didn't appear on here cuz Aerosmith wanted to make a small compilation. It would be nearly perfect if it wasn't for the destruction of two great Aerosmith songs.
Dream On is great, with one of those riffs that makes you think of something important in your life when you hear it, the kind that made songs like Stairway to Heaven and Hotel California famous. Same Old Song and Dance was the best track from Get Your Wings, but it still isn't all that great. But it shows Aerosmith's funky side. Then comes the first destroyed track. The excellent Sweet Emotion has been destroyed, being cut off by more than a minute and with the best parts taken away. The way it is shown on here makes it sound a lot worse than it truly is. Walk This Way with its wonderful funk riff and lyrics has also been cut a little short, but at least the important parts remained intact. Last Child is completely intact and also shows off Aerosmith's funk rock. Then comes Back in the Saddle. One of the best western type tracks ever, this song has everything. Draw the Line has a great riff and great lyrics. Then comes the next great destroyed Aerosmith song. Kings and Queens has a minute take off of it as well and also sounds way worse in this version. At least Remember(Walking in the Sand) is untouched. It's a great song with another great riff.
Overall, this is a good Aerosmith compilation and at least it has all the great songs on here. But only buy this if you don't mind Sweet Emotion and Kings and Queens sounding like they were made in 2 minutes.

The Greatest hits of their first era.......2006-02-13
To this day it's my favorite "Greatest Hits" album from this band. This one features their covers of the Beatles songs "Come together" and "Kings and Queens" which despite being covers are given a new spark by Steven Tyler and the boys. The early hits are here, as we find ourselves enjoying the raw and ever so powerful tracks like "Sweet Emotion" "Same old song and dance" and "Walk this way". Ten tracks in all on this greatest hits package of their early material, and when compared to their entire discography tends to fade into the background, it still is the start of the machine that we came to know as a supergroup called AEROSMITH.
A very good compilation.......2005-12-17
This was the 2nd CD I ever bought (Metallica's "Master of Puppets" is the first, in case you wanted to know).
There are some pros and cons like others have said.
Pros:
1. Most of their early hits.
2. Good overall compilation.
3. Decent sound for being transferred from analog to digital.
Cons:
1. Missing some of my favorite songs like "Toys In The Attic", "Train Kept A-Rollin'" and "Mama Kin".
2. No liner notes.
Overall, I think this would be best suited for more of a casual fan rather than a rabid Aerosmith fanatic.
Perfect for any Aerosmith Fan.......2005-10-29
Aerosmith has been creating hits for several decades, and this CD gathers up some of their most popular songs. It's important that this was put out back in 1980! Certainly they have had MANY hits since then. Heck, they had more than 10 hits at that point, even. Still, people were asking for a Greatest Hits collection at the time, and they loved having one to buy.
These are NOT the full length album versions of songs. These are the "singles" versions. Actually for fans, that is a great thing. If you want the full length album version, you can buy the album. Without this collection it might be really hard to hear the version you remembered from the radio.
People always argue over what songs count as hits to go on a collection. I found this group a quite nice group, and I own the other albums as I said if I want to listen to another song not in this set.
Dream On is of course an epic classic, I just love this song. "Dream until your dreams come true!" It's great for blasting in the car as you cruise down the highway, looking to get that new job or boyfriend or whatever it is you're seeking. On the flip side, "Same Old Song and Dance" is a little more callous, that life gives you junk to deal with sometimes - so you deal with it.
"Sweet Emotion" is the kick-butt longing that just about every human has had at some point in life, when you see someone in a club and you just want to be with them. Then comes "Walk This Way" which I really love, with its cool strut-sound that is perfect to dance to.
Really, every song here is great, right up until the ending "Remember" song full of angst and plaintiveness. It's the perfect ending to the collection of songs that span the emotions through dreams, losses, lust, and heartache.
Well recommended to go with your other Aerosmith CDs!
A decent compilation of 'single edits'.......2005-02-19
The previous reviewer is correct. In fact, the compilation as a whole favors 'single edits.' That is, album versions of songs were edited to make them shorter and then released as singles, and that's what they use here.
Problem is, back in the 1970's, to make a 'single edit,' you didn't cut the master - that would've been VERY bad. Instead they would dub the master on to a new tape and make the edit on the copy. The cut-up copy would then become the master for the single. Sometimes they even throw in some compression and bad EQ during the dubbing when making the 'single edit.'
So why should anyone care? Because it explains why the sound quality on this compilation is inferior to the CDs of the actual albums.
Aerosmith was a great hard rock band in the 1970's, their creative peak, but you're better off with other compilations. Better yet, get "Toys In The Attic" or "Rocks." "Toys In The Attic" has their biggest, best-known hits, and it's probably the one with the most mainstream appeal. "Rocks," though, is their best album. Both are essential Aerosmith.

Customer Reviews:
What a deal!.......2005-11-15
What a deal. You get the very best of the worlds greatest rock and roll band Aerosmithat the height of their carear in the 1970's and a classic live album of the band from the 1980's and all together for a pretty low price, what a deal!
This is Aerosmiths great hits from 1973-1987 (not 1988!!!) and you get it all. 'Dream On' 'Walk This Way' 'Let The Music Do The Talkin' its all here. Every song on the album is a classic. The original greatest hits left off over half of these songs. No 'Let The Music Do The Talkin' 'Mama Kin' 'Lightening Strikes' (even though it wasnt really a big hit). And it also had poor edits on 'Kings And Queens' and 'Sweet Emotion' cutting off the classic intros and killer jams at the ends of the songs. Well this version still does that but it is still good.
Aerosmiths Classics Live is also included here. While this is not one of Aerosmtihs best live recordings its still a Aerosmith classic and is essential to all Aerosmith and rock and roll collections. Some songs were recorded with Joe Perry and Brad Whitford and some are with out and have Rick Dufey and Jimmy Crespo playing guitar, while that is my biggest complaint because Joe Perry is my hero and I dont think you can have Aerosmtih with out Brad Whitford and certainly not without Joe Perry, as I am sure most will agree. My other small complaint is these are bad selections, I mean Steven is really high and the band isnt really tight, they could have been better but they were all high or drunk or both. But these small problems dont bother me too much because I still think this is a great live album from Aerosmith.
So to conclude this is a great deal you get Aerosmtihs best and Aerosmith live, for the average fan you couldnt want more, but as a hardcore fan like myself I must recomend to you that you buy all the bands albums as they are all truly fantastic with the exception of Rock And A Hard Place, which is still pretty good in itself.

Better then the original!.......2005-11-06
The original Greatest Hits by Aerosmith released in 1980 was anything but. Most of the songs that were hits for the band were left off, and the songs that were on the album were not the Greatest hits by the band, they were the right songs, but the wrong versions, remixes, and alternate edits totaly ruined the album.
'Sweet Emotion' and 'Kings And Queens' both feature amazing intro into the songs, especially 'Sweet Emotion' because of its amazing bass line. Those two intros were left off the album and the songs were made shorter. Whats more is 'Sweet Emotions' closing jam/guitar solo was also edited out. Whats up with that.
With only ten songs the original didnt satisfy diehard Aerosmith fans like myself. Songs like 'One Way Street' and 'Big Ten Inch Record' but here they have all the bands greatest hits from the 1970's and 1980's until 1987. The album says untill 1988 but its until '87 because 88 was when 'Dude (looks like a lady)' 'Angel' and 'Rag Doll' came out. So this more then makes up for the bad original compalation.
For Aerosmith fans there is nothing better then this band, and this collection does the best job of showing the band in its peak form before the quite drugs. Highly recomended!
Influential American Rock 'N' Roll. 'Nuff said........2005-03-18
Huh, first one to review this. Here goes...
I think it's pretty safe to say that everybody and their mother know who Aerosmith are. They've all heard "Don't Wanna Miss A Thing" and "Jaded" enough times. And, of course, Steve Tyler is a celebrity in his own right. But (at least most) classic rock/70's music fans can tell you that back in the '70s, Aerosmith was KICKIN'. Don't get me wrong, their later stuff is good, but, honestly, it's hard to top the classics featured on this set.
And if you want foot-tapping, groovy, funky rock and roll (they don't make 'em like that anymore), look no further than this compilation. These songs are classics; the powerful ballad "Dream On" that skyrocketed Aerosmith to fame in the early '70s, the funky riff-laden "Walk This Way" (this is the original, obviously, sans Run DMC), their take on the Beatles hit "Come Together", the hard-drivin' "Back In The Saddle", et cetera, et cetera, and, of course, both versions of one of the best songs ever recorded - PERIOD - "Sweet Emotion". Track 5 is the watered down version (still decent), but Track 16 is the REAL "Sweet Emotion"... ohh man. Trippy intro, funky beat, ROCKING riffs... THIS is what rock 'n' roll is all about (you listening, Breaking Benjamin?)!
Yeah... this is a great introduction to classic Aerosmith. Although this is listed as an import (and a pricey one at that), you can buy this and "Classics Live!" as a two-set at most American record stores for a reasonable price. Check it on out.
"A-just gimme a KISS!"

Too early to be thier greatest hits but some huge early hits.......2003-05-13
Whilst this CD was released a bit too early to actually be a greatest hits album it does contain their greatest songs of the 70's. Walk This Way probably Aerosmith's best known song is on here and is of course just as sensational to listen to today as it was back then, I assume because I wasn't born then. It's a great song. Sweet Emotion is another sensational classic as is Dream On. You may remember Come Together from a coke advertising campaign.
I don't usually like 70's music but these songs on here have stood the test of time and the big hits could have been released in any decade. For a greatest hits album with later hits try their album Big Ones. None of these songs are found on there though and this album is worth owning especially if it's a good price.

In the seventies, Aerosmith was one of the finest American rock groups around. The band's own unique stylings of hard rock were all their own, and no other band had a sound like this. It isn't at all surprising to see that Steven Tyler and his bandmates are still remembered as excellent musicians to this day, still get radio play on a regular basis, and remain popular. In 1980, after recording six albums and breaking up, (the break-up was not permanent, obviously,) the band released the appropriately-entitled Aerosmith's Greatest Hits. Read on and see how the band's first compilation fares!
OVERVIEW:
Aerosmith's Greatest Hits was released in October of 1980, on Columbia Records. All of the tracks featured on this compilation are performed by the classic Aerosmith lineup of Steven Tyler on vocals, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford on guitars, Tom Hamilton on bass, and Joey Kramer on drums. The compilation pulls tracks from the band's self-titled debut (1973), Get Your Wings (1974), Toys In The Attic (1975), Rocks (1976), Draw The Line (1977), the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Soundtrack (1978), and Night In The Ruts (1979.) Tracklist features Dream On, Same Old Song And Dance, Sweet Emotion (Edited Version), Walk This Way, Last Child, Back In The Saddle, Draw The Line, Kings And Queens (Edited Version), Come Together, and Remember (Walkin' In The Sand.)
REVIEW:
This is a classic example of one of those hits compilations that was excellent back in the days of vinyl records, but in this day and age, where you have compact discs and can easily fit up to eighty minutes of music on one of them, this set just falls flat. I am extremely disappointed to see that the record company didn't do an expanded edition with additional tracks to fill in all that extra running time on the CD. Nonetheless, it is a solid, filler-free compilation with what it does offer you. Let's take a look at each of the albums, and see what they serve up!
AEROSMITH (1973)
TRACKS PRESENT: Dream On
COMMENTS: This song was Aerosmith's first big hit, and rightfully so. But why is it the only track included from the debut!? How they could omit Mama Kin is beyond me, being that it was a very popular song in its own right. Dream On IS the best song from the debut the band could have selected, but why stop there?
GET YOUR WINGS (1974)
TRACKS PRESENT: Same Old Song And Dance
COMMENTS: Everything I said about the debut album is also true here. Same Old Song And Dance was the biggest hit and all-around best song on the album, but it wasn't the only good song or big hit! The compilation really would have benefited from Train Kept A-Rollin', which sadly, is missing in action. You can't represent ANY Aerosmith album with a single track from each!
TOYS IN THE ATTIC (1975)
TRACKS PRESENT: Sweet Emotion (in edited form), Walk This Way
COMMENTS: Two big hits, but they could have done so much more. Walk This Way is the quintessential Aerosmith classic, no question. Sweet Emotion is a similarly-loved song, and rightfully so. But why is Sweet Emotion edited!? There is no excuse for this, period! And while were at it, where are the title track and Big Ten Inch Record? These omissions, as well as a classic hit being edited, are totally unforgivable.
ROCKS (1976)
TRACKS PRESENT: Last Child, Back In The Saddle:
COMMENTS: It's the same story all over again. Two big hits from the album in question, but there were other choices that would have made fine additions to the album. Rats In The Cellar is the omission from this album that hurt me the most. All the more reason this compilation is long overdue for expansion.
DRAW THE LINE (1977)
TRACKS PRESENT: Draw The Line, Kings And Queens (in edited form)
COMMENTS: I'm not going to lie. From this album, the person compiling this set could not have picked two better songs with which to represent the band? The problem? Kings And Queens is edited, slicing off the awesome guitar intro. These edited versions are a huge thorn in this compilation's side. Edited stuff belongs on the radio, not on compilations!
NIGHT IN THE RUTS (1979)
TRACKS PRESENT: Remember (Walkin' In The Sand)
COMMENTS: One song from this album? That's all we get? While I'm not going to deny that this is an excellent song, it just isn't enough, nor is it necessarily the best choice. I was surprised to see No Surprize, Cheese Cake, Mia, Or Chiquita didn't make the cut. Personally, I think any one of these songs probably would have represented this album better than the Shangri-Las cover the compiler decided to go with.
OTHER TRACKS
TRACKS PRESENT: Come Together
COMMENTS: Come Together was pulled from the 1978 soundtrack to the film Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. That soundtrack, appropriately enough, featured various artists covering Beatles songs. Aerosmith's cover of this standard is one of the few pieces from that soundtrack that really stood out. And with the release of Aerosmith's Greatest Hits, at long last, the piece was finally available on an Aerosmith album! A nice addition to the compilation.
I am glad to see that this compilation kept the songs in the original release date orders, however I am extremely disappointed to see that the record company chose not to do an expanded edition. They had a ton of room on the compact disc format to do so, and with all that space, there is no excuse for the omissions or the edited versions of some tracks being featured here. It's also worth noting that nowhere on the packaging does it indicate that these tracks are edited versions. Likewise, there are no unreleased tracks, meaning if you bought all of the albums, you're not going to find anything new here (except for the edited versions, and honestly, who wants those?)
OVERALL:
What it comes down to is that this was a good compilation when it was made. The seventies was Aerosmith's heyday, and their heyday deserves better representation than this. Why can't the record company just expand this release, and give us a nice, solid eighty-minute representation of the 1973-1979 period? Fortunately, this compilation is often budget-priced, so if you want an all killer, no filler representation of the band's old days, and you can find it for a low enough price, it should fit the bill nicely. In the end, I would have to say that this compilation is moderately recommended. If you want a compilation that covers the band's entire career, go with the two-disc Oh Yeah compilation. Hell, even IT, with what little focus it has on the seventies, does a better job representing the era than this compilation does. So my final verdict is to get Oh Yeah instead, unless you're on a budget or you loathe the post-seventies material.
EDITION NOTES:
This compilation has never gone out of print since the record company first started creating it on vinyl in 1980, and it isn't likely to go out of print anytime soon. So if you want it, you're not going to have any trouble hunting it down at all. Pretty much any place that has a decent enough compact disc collection will have this one in stock.
