Supernatural

Amazon.com essential recording
The Arista debut of Carlos Santana and band gives fans of the soulful guitar vet two albums in one, but it's a decidedly good-news, bad-news proposition. First, there's a fine collection of late-'90s-model Santana--tastefully tooled songs driven by Latin jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms ("[Da Le] Taleo," "Africa Bamba," "Migra," "Primavera," and the emotionally charged instrumental "El Farol") that allow Carlos plenty of elbowroom for his passionate soloing. Then there's the collection of tracks featuring a lineup of de rigueur alternative and hip-hop stars, including Dave Matthews, Everlast, Rob Thomas, Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Eagle Eye Cherry. To their credit, Matthews ("Love of My Life") and Eagle Eye Cherry ("Wishing It Was") muster enough chemistry to make the fusion work. But the rest of the collaborations feel like an unnecessary stretch to reach out to a younger demographic that El Jefe has little trouble attracting on his own terms. --Jerry McCulley

No Mas!.......2007-07-14
If I hear another Santana song I will throw myself off a tall bridge. He is the most over-rated artist period.
an intriguing cross-section of musical flavors.............2007-06-08
What do you think of when you hear the name Santana? For me, my thoughts go to "Oye Como Va," "Black Magic Woman," and "Evil Ways." Carlos Santana has always been the epitome of cool, class and mad talent. That hasn't dulled with time, and he definitely hasn't softened with time. Carlos just has a deeper realized sazon (flavor), now. "Well," thought the producers of this album, "what better way to introduce Carlos Santana to the younger generation, than through blending his sound with a bunch of other artists that emerged in the last ten years or so?" Very intriguing idea. Does it work? On some cuts, it succeeds very well! While, on other cuts, the music comes across as [slightly] engineered to appeal, but it doesn't really make the lasting impression I would have loved to feel.
Some of the most well-known songs from this album include "Smooth" with Rob Thomas, "Maria, Maria," with Wyclef Jean, and "Corazon Espinado," with Mana. For me, "Smooth" was great to hear, the first several times on the radio, but I think it was [a bit] played out. Rob Thomas has strong vocals but they don't blend well with Santana. Thomas sounds almost too "trendy," here. The beauty of Santana is that he is timeless and he could appear on any album, from probably any time, and his scorchingly hot guitar licks would still ignite your speakers, and that is probably why this musical coupling didn't work so well. Whereas, "Maria, Maria" succeeds in sounding street and like Santana is channeling the hauntedness of the barrio with Wyclef's tight production (hip hop meets latin soul). Great! "Corazon Espinado" is right on the mark. Mexican rock band Mana sounds wonderful with Santana, and their vocals and back-up compliment him beautifully. If I was really going to analyze every track on this album, it would take all day for you to even get through this review! So, I will stop right now and just say that SUPERNATURAL is [overall] a very compelling project, and when it's good, it's great. If there are some songs you don't like, just skip them, because there really is something here for everyone.
Supernatural is Simply Super.......2007-05-30
As a sixty-something year old musician and guitarist who still gigs, I am truly amused by all those folks who love an artist's work SO much, they think time, and the artist should stand still. I have been a fan of Santana's since he first broke out, and I have every album he's ever made...and listen to them frequently. I also love SUPERNATURAL! I especially love his collabo's with younger artists. He's not so much reaching out to them, as he is bringing them into his world. If you are the kind of listener who wants to know before you open the jewel box what you will hear, Carlos is simply not for you. He has always experimented, and grown. Some of his "experiments" are lifelong companions, others don't work as well as they might. So what? As to all those who have the nerve to call Carlos Santana a sell-out simply because he has been successful, I remind you all, that this master is wealthy enough to never have to record or gig again in life, and that he does it for the sheer joy of it! I hear in this album his incredible joy at trying something else, and loving it. Rock on Carlos!
Great sounds.......2007-05-24
I really enjoyed this oldie but goodie. Santana has a certain sound that is easy to listen to.
Hey, Carlos! Get back with the Woodstock band!.......2007-04-13
Okay, so Santana traded his integrity for those little green slips of paper with important dead guys on them decades ago, so it's no surprise he made out like a bandit by collaborating with the likes of Lauryn Hill, Dave Matthews and ROB THOMAS (why, Carlos? WHYYYYYYY????????????) playing the MOST commercial stuff imaginable. I mean, who's he gonna drag into the studio next? Scott Stapp? I hope not. That would be a dark day for Santana-dom.
I know most kids my age were introduced to Santana via this album's 65.7234 billion hits. Not me, though. While I heard Smooth and the like before any "classic Santana", I didn't know it was by Santana at the time. So I was consciencelly exposed to 'Los through the classics: Black Magic Woman, Oye Como Va, Soul Sacrifice, No One to Depend On, Europa, etc. And did that stuff kick huge keister, or did it kick huge keister? I guess I did hear all the big-deal Supernatural/Shaman songs BEFORE Black Magic Woman and its compatriots, but again, I had no clue it was Santana. And that let me tell you, that stuff's a world away from this. I mean, this can't even lick Abraxas or Santana 3's boots. I like Smooth, though, even if we've all heard it thirty-five-and-three-quarters trillion times. Catchy song, even with ROB THOMAS (who I'd like to kick) doing his "soulful" moans and whispers. Honestly, that guy's got as much soul as courrogated cardboard. But that's okay, because of Santana's slinky, seductive six-string solo. (Like the alliteration?) Even better is (Da Le) Yaleo, a fun pseudo-instrumental with Latin lyrics; and the attack on U.S. immigration policies known as Migra. And Santana's still Santana, which means he can play his guitar like few others. One of the top guys in the guitar game.
The downsides: pretty much everything else, starting with Maria Maria. What's Santana doing with rappers? I'll tell you what: laughing all the way to the bank as his fans buy the album in droves and are forced to put up with crap like that. And how many times can you mention "Spanish Harlem" in one song? No wonder these guys call themselves the "Product G&B" (which stands for "Ghetto & blues" - how ridiculous can you get?): they are, indeed, pure product. But why stop blasting this now? Africa Bamba is obviously an attempt to pull another Latin-sung smash. But it's not Oye Como Va or Guajira, I'll say that right now. Meanwhile, Put Your Lights On is invariably dull angsty rambling nobody in their right mind would listen to more than once, while Love of My Life wins the Least Original Title award AND the Least Original Song Award. Whoa, great winnings. Amazing. Or maybe I'd give both prizes to Do You Like the Way. I'm torn, somebody help me! And The Calling, with Eric Clapton, should be this godly guitar jam, because it's got ERIC CLAPTON! And he's a REALLY GOOD GUITARIST! And a COMPLETE SELLOUT! JUST LIKE SANTANA! My god, two massive sellouts on one song... the only thing that's missing is a Rod Stewart vocal spot, and they'd be all set. Getting back to the song itself, it's an extrodinary example of wanksmanship that goes on far too long.
So yeah, it sold a bunch, but it's kind of bad... and really commercial... and stuff... and shouldn't be in the Definitive 200... yeah... don't know how to close the review...

How did DC Talk follow up their epic Jesus Freak? Very carefully, if Supernatural is any indication. Where Jesus Freak broke through musical barriers in a genre known for playing it safe, Supernatural builds on the band's momentum with a familiar blend of power pop, beautiful ballads, and power-chord rockers. The opening "It's Killing Me" lays down a riveting foundation, while Toby McKeehan has never sounded more like Seal than on the soft ballads "Consume Me" and "Godsend." But McKeehan (who coproduces) also turns it around by belting out the R&B-tinged "Wanna Be Loved." Not to be outdone, Michael Tait, Kevin Max, and McKeehan team up wonderfully on the radio-ready "Into Jesus." Once again, producer Mark Heimermann blends fascinating vocal arrangements into DC Talk's magical wall of sound. --Michael Lyttle

Skip this and move on to the Greatest Hits.......2007-07-07
The two previous albums "Free At Last" and "Jesus Freak" are now considered classics in Christian Music. Every song on those albums are very well crafted songs and there are no fillers. Because I loved their two previous albums I was anticipating that I would love "Supernatural". Well back in 1998 I bought the album the day it came out and was dissapointed. The album didn't seem to have the heart that the two previous albums had. The lyrics and production seems very forced. For some reason I can't stand "My Friend So Long". It sounds like they are judging some other Christian band for going secular. That song and other are examples of too much production and annoying vocal stylization that is all over this album.
Some great stand outs on this album that can compare to some of there older stuff would be the "Consume Me" which is a softer ballad and "Supernatural". Now Supernatural has that odd vocal styling and the loud instraments BUT it is only in the chorus where the cacophony of instraments accours. It is a pretty well balanced song.
My recomendation is instead of getting this album buy the new dc talk Greatest Hits that came out in 2007. It takes some of the better tracks from this album: Consume Me, Godsend, Supernatural, and Red Letters. This songs sound so much better when balanced with tracks from Jesus Freak and Free at Last.
DC Talk-Supernatural.......2007-05-18
DC Talk is one of the most versatile groups around, even compared to secular circles, few can match the range of diversity of music styles that seems "natural" to DC Talk, yet as the title alludes to, there is something deeper, beyond the 'normal' scope here. Their ability to express their Christian experiences in such an array of music is a very enjoyable experience to take-in & listen. "It's Killing me" speaks very honestly of the struggle between flesh & spirit; "Hey I'm into Jesus" though gives a revelation of Joy that only serving Christ with a committed love & devotion can bring, and it's obvious these guys know that Joy very personally. Take them up on this treat of the spirit, and you will be blessed beyond your expectations.
the best from dc talk.......2007-02-20
I just wish all Christian music could sound this great. This is probably one of my most favorite cds, Christian or secular. The vocals are incredible, the musicians are the best and the lyrics are meaningful. Love it!
Not 'Jesus Freak', but still a great CD .......2006-12-18
Following up on 'Jesus Freak', the colossal album that changed DC Talk from just a rap group into one of the most important artists in Christian Music, could not be an easy task. But listening to 'Supernatural' makes it sound like it was the easiest thing in the world to put out another great CD.
This release is ALMOST as good as 'Freak' (and in some ways it even surpasses it). Almost every song on this CD is top-notch - from rockers like 'Since I met You', 'Dive' and the title track to lovely ballads like 'Red Letters' (perhaps their finest song to date). The band morphs from one style to another througout the set, bouncing between fun and purpose freely, sometimes within the same song. 'My Friend' is a good example of that, with fun creative wordplay that betrays the dramatic story beneath it.
The major shortcoming that I hear is that this ablum doesn't sound as fresh as 'Freak' did. One case in point is 'Godsend', a fairly mellow piece that is not without merit, but somehow it comes off as a second-rate clone of 'Just Between You and Me'. And "It's Killing Me" could have been more powerful, but it sounds like they are trying too hard to restrain themselves (at least until the endo of the song).
But those are small potatoes. Overall, this is a fine CD that can brighten any collection. It is a pity that their solo careers have put the group on the back burner. In my book, DC Talk is greater than the sum of its' parts.
The "last" DC Talk album is the worst.......2006-09-08
This is probably the last DC Talk Album to be made since the three are well into their solo careers now. I hope they'll get back together to make another record because I always enjoyed their blend of rock, soul and rap. But, unfortunately, they left off the rap part on "Supernatural." As a long time fan of DC Talk, I was obviously attracted by the rap side of their music, since that's all they did on their first three releases. "Supernatural" doesn't even throw a bone to the rap fans of TobyMac. Still, I like several songs on the album. My Friend, Fearless, Supernatural and a few others are good. For those of you that found these artists through their solo releases, "Supernatural" features Tait and Kevin Max much more than Toby Mac.

Will always love this one!..........2004-09-24
This CD is really catchy, upbeat, still love it after all these years! She has a great, unique voice for her material. 'Life' and 'What's Your Sign' are great cuts- sunny day feelgood songs. Not so keen on her new stuff, but this one is 'the classic'. Try it out!
Nice, but a little different than expected.......2003-01-12
I bought this cd expecting something more along the lines of "I ain't movin." Simple lyrics, but inspiring. I was kind of disappointed by Supernatural because some of the lyrics are really corney on this cd. Like the fist song "What's your Sign? Do you know?/Let me guess? You're Scorpio/...Scorpios are pretty cool. See I am a Sag..." Just very lyrically uninspiring. The first song "What's your Sign" was not my cup of tea at all; I did like the chorus however the rest..ahh. The music was very good for all the songs-but lyrically, it was lacking (which drags the power of cd down). And all the "doo doot doo doot doo" choruses (instead of actually words) in many of the songs also got on my nerves. However, there are some redeeming gems that make the cd great. Such as Indigo Daisies, Darwin Star, and Time. The song that was my favorite was "time"-I love that song; its about how time goes so fast & we all just need some more, beautiful melody. So if your buying this cd, buy it expecting ok music but not v. wonderful lyrics.
I would definitely recommend her 1st cd mind adventures & I ain't movin before this cd. =)
Third uplifting pop&soul release for the gifted british lady.......2002-08-21
All of us fans have loved each of the three Des' Ree offerings for some very specific reasons . In Supernatural , the warmth in her voice is once again perfecly combined with her delicant melodies and her , full of wit and simplicity lyrics . " What's Your Sighn ? " , " Indigo Daises " and the first single " Life " are all great yet do pay special attention to the sensational " I'm Kissing You " and the tender , ethereal " Darwin Star " , the magic ballad which the Celine Dions of this world have never released . Even though she's a beautifull tall woman , Des' Ree sounds she would be perfect as your best friend as well .
Soulful and light.......2002-01-02
After a fair few years of slog, Des'ree finally made it into the charts with hit single `You Gotta Be', followed by the radio-favourite `Life'. In many ways this British soul album is similar to artists such as Gabrielle (particularly during her early years). The lyrics of the songs certainly have that uplifting feel to them, especially on such fantastic tracks such as `You Gotta Be', which is every bit as good, if not better than Gabrielle's `Dreams'. Comparisons are obviously going to be made, but Des'ree is patently the better artist when listening to her best songs, even if she isn't as consistent and as radio-friendly (save some of her singles) as Gabrielle.
There are clear weaknesses to the album, namely the fact that Des'ree's often plain daft lyrics don't work all the time. For instance, on the single `Life', they work to a tee and are amusing as they are curiously relevant to the song. Yet on tracks such as `Proud To Be A Dread', the tired message of being yourself falls flat on words such as `some say he should shave his head, but he's proud to be a dread'.
Yet underneath it all you get the feeling that Des'ree, who pens her songs herself, isn't just trying to cash in on the `out there' bandwagon. Particularly the last track on the album `You Gotta Be' is not only catchy but also light, intelligent and inspiring. Of course, anyone's who has heard the single that she released for the `Romeo and Juliet' soundtrack will know that there's certainly more to Des'ree than meets the eye. Crucially, she can also do soul a lot better than many other artists. Her smooth vocals work perfectly on `I'm Kissing You' and `Indigo Daisies'. Here is someone that's kind of a mixture between Gabrielle and Sade yet never seems to achieve their success. She's light, she's soulful and she's fun.
Really disappointing.......2001-03-26
I loved her previous CD "I Ain't Movin"...hated this CD...juvenile lyrics...I only really liked one original song, "Proud to be a Dread"...the only other 2 songs I liked were "Fire" (w/Babyface) and "Kissing You", and I already owned these on soundtracks...hope she's back at "I Ain't Movin" level on her next CD (I'll keep listening)...

Identify Your Purpose.......2007-02-19
It is expedient to identify one's purpose(s) when making a purchase. If the purpose is to ridicule, that person is a fool, not an example of a taken for granted freedom. Having said that, Abraham Laboriel completes this recording. I am a mild fan of Santana and have enjoyed his music for many years, as I said, mildly. I am a fan of good musicians and Abraham Laboriel is one such. A special, "Thank you!" must go to Dave Weckl as well as to all the other musicians making this recording excellent. The guitarists do justice, for the most part. Thank you to all for an excellent recording.
Electric Guitar Heaven.......2007-01-12
I guess the real question to ask is whether or not we need to hear Carlos Santana's classic material reinterpreted by other guitarists. If your answer is yes, this CD is heaven-sent. Ten giants of jazz, rock and blues guitar--including Pat Martino, Eric Gale, Mike Stern, Frank Gambale and Robben Ford--pay tribute to the superstar six-string slinger by putting their own distinctive individual stamps on "Jingo," "Oye Como Va," "Blues for Salvador" and more. Martino is the most subtle, planting a gorgeous "Flor D'Luna (Moonflower)" in the midst of a garden of mostly blazing hot licks, but Albert Lee throws a countryish Telecaster tone onto "Samba Pa Ti" that works very nicely. --Jim Newsom

Underground even for underground - but don't sleep.......2006-06-19
4.5 STARS
I've only recently been exposed to Supernatural, so take into account while reading this review that I'm not deeply familiar with his work, flow, history, etc... etc... But I can say that this album, S.P.I.T. is a beautiful work of art. His lyrics are impressively well put together. His songs are cohesive, and while every verse rhymes at all the appropriate times, it's easy to forget that he's rapping and simply get lost in his stories. Songs such as "Rise" and "Not That Way" are heartwarmingly inspirational, conscience, and clever. While his flow may not be quite as effortless as the likes of Phonte (of Little Brother and Foreign Exchange,) it certainly isn't forced. To sum up Supernatural's flow in a word, it would be "laid-back." He keeps it consistently low-key, letting his easy-going melodies and lyrics take center stage. His hook is simply his words, like the old-school artists of years ago, not his beats or sampling or energy. He lets it all ride on simply what is being said, and he succeeds where any mainstream artist would fail. If you took away the club-bangin beats and wild-man screams of Lil John's mainstream hits, noone would ever listen to him, because what he makes isn't poetry or music. It's a hard-hitting bassline and gibberish screamed incoherently through the speakers with enough energy to hoodwink the crowd into forgetting that they're not actually listening to music. While "S.P.I.T." may not be a club album, it feels like something in the vein of Saul Williams. Spoken word poetry with a beat. I can't say I won't revise my opinion on Supernatural just yet, for better or worse, but on first impression, I'm impressed, and I recommend this album to anyone interested in intelligent music.
A Breath of Fresh Air.......2005-12-14
I was skeptical when I saw that Supernatural was finally coming out with a studio album. I mean the guy may be the greatest freestyler to ever walk the planet, but an album is a totally different beast. Yet no sooner than 30 seconds into the second track (the first track is just an intro) my fears were gone; I knew this album was an instant classic. The beats are tight and the verses are tighter. It's Beverly Hills old lady plastic surgery tight! Tracks 6 ("Black Opera") & 7 ("The Showdown") will be huge if they get some radio play. DON'T SLEEP ON THIS ALBUM!!!
REAL HIP-HOP.......2005-11-24
This is what hip-hop is supposed to sound like! If you're ready for something that doesn't sound like the rest, get your copy of "S.P.I.T" now. Better yet, get "The Lost Freestyle Files" to go with it.
Supernatural is more original than ever !!.......2005-11-21
Guess Who's Back ? Who is the Greatest of them all ? Who can smoke the mic with a freestyle that burns cables ?
Y'all know the name.
Supernat and his ability to rap in an orginal style that is light years ahead of his competition, is right on time. Supernat doesn't sit down and write kindergarten rhymes on paper for hours, instead he has the ability to create these rhymes on the spot when it's least expected. "Talented" is a fairly weak term if you are referring to this master.
The beats, samples and grooves on this cd are original and relentless. The rhymes are fresh and the style is not redundant or repetitive. Other MC's will sign up to take a class when they get schooled with this cd.
"Battles with Self", "Who's the Greatest", "Guess Who's Back" and "Off Top" are my favorites and are clear, rhyme+beat winning tracks.
Other "rappers" just can't rhyme this good.

Long live dcTalk!.......2000-01-30
I play this CD day and night and it NEVER gets old. Their songwriting is soaring to new heights and their raw talent and fire for God radiates from their music. It's just plain awesome! These guys sure know how to write music. They are with no argument some of the most talented guys in music today, and the best band you've heard, Christian or not! Best of all, they realize that God rulz and are willing to show that through their music. These guys just plain RULE! They're beyond words.
Their lyrics are one of the most outstanding aspects of their music, if there IS anything that can be compared to the overall perfect quality. Red Letters, Supernatural, and Consume Me have some of the most powerful lyrics I've ever heard. It just drives, man!
Just listen to them, and you'll understand!
Amazing, they top themselves again!.......1999-12-30

Customer Reviews:
A thrash band that deserve their respect........2004-10-15
Deceased is a band that plays thrash at its purest with originality and the passion that you can actullie feel it, making it look real and not poser or wannabe like, at all. For any one into straight thrash with passion and true sounds? I recommend.
Classic metal.......2002-09-14
Deceased can no longer be classified as a death metal band. Maybe they began their illustrious career as one, but now they just play straightforward, jarring heavy metal... and Supernatural Addiction is their best disc yet.
King Fowley's vocals sound better than they ever have, a vast improvement from the nonsensical gargle prominent on past releases. He takes a stand (or seat?) as a fine metal vocalist, powering excellent thrashy traditional based songs with gruff vocals. Those epic song structures showcased on Fearless Undead Machines are almost gone. SA consists of 8 concise metal anthems, with great melodic leads and catchy guitar work. Imagine a mix of Iron Maiden and mid 80s Kreator.
The Premonition is just a fine track, a true metal anthem, and my favorite along with the Doll With the Hideous Spirit and Elly's Dementia. As usual, the lyrical base is horror, and nobody does it better than the originals. Deceased truly rules, and this album proves that beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Their best album yet!.......2002-02-10
I don't know how, but this album is their best release yet! I had always thought "Luck of the Corpse" was their best release, but I am pleased to say I was wrong! Every true metal fan should pay homage to King and co. for continuing to put out such fine material as this. So many great 80's influences here, from Voivod to Possessed to Kreator to Maiden, it's a true treat to listen to. Great solos, great song structure, and my man, King Fowley, leading the way. Definately worth the purchase!!!
Does Metal get any truer than Deceased?.......2001-09-08
How King Fowley and Co. can continually outshine themselves album after album is a complete mystery to me. There are no ups & downs with this band; each progressing album is a new development and evolution in the sound and mythos of Deceased! Propelling beyond mere labels, Deceased can now only be categorized as Metal, for no sub-genre can contain the flamboyant nature of the band's evolution! With the escalating integration of classic Metal stimuli, the band honestly stands on its own and proudly displays its denim-clad heritage. Supernatural Addiction, the band's latest endeavor, openly exhibits King's adoration for the bizarre and unexplainable, as portrayed in retellings of familiar myths & legends of both the print world and film universe. Continuing the anthem-like songwriting style last heard on 1997's Fearless Undead Machines, Deceased propagates more spellbinding guitar harmonies while spinning yarns of ghosts, possessed dolls and other subjects that the human subconscious dare not relinquish! It is this quality that grants the album a book-like impression, for each song is the sonic translation of a pre-existing story. Leave it to Mr. Fowley to turn Man's fears and superstitions into Heavy Metal anthems! Upon completion of the album, I must pose one question, does Metal get any truer than Deceased?
not bad--somewhat derivative.......2000-08-26
The Iron Maiden influence is powerful here--not that that is a bad thing. However, it's amazing how a band in a homage of sorts to Edgar Poe can't even spell his name correctly--It's Edgar ALLAN Poe--not ALLEN!!!!!! Come on People.
